I'm not so prideful as to deny that seeing this pop up in my feed brought a tear to my eye. This alongside several other NES games have always stayed in my memory.
Won't usually upvote a video before viewing...but with this game I'll make an exception! Glad you're bringing awareness to this slightly lesser known NES classic. And a challenging game to boot.
My mom got this for me when I was about 11ish for Christmas. 10 bucks in one of those K-Mart rotating bargain display cases that they just haphazardly shoved games into when the NES was being massively clearanced around 1995-1996. Blew my mind in a way that only Blaster Master had previously. I literally went AHHHHH TGL out loud when I saw this and my wife looked at me funny. So hyped!
Haha. This was the second game I ever bought with my own money (chore allowance/birthday money). Was definitely not in the bargain bin at toys-r-us. Such loving memories of this game. Maybe not my #1 nes game but I do consider it my favorite soundtrack.
@@cnkclark , I currently am rocking out to Blaster Master Zero, but I too have fond memories of playing the OG Blaster Master/Super Planetary War Records: Metafight.
Oh man, I got a lot of good games at K-mart used. They were like $10 bucks a piece. I got mega man 1, flying dragon, and a few others there when we had K-mart.
One of my all time favorite NES games. Beat it several times and recorded most of the music on cassette tape that I think I still have somewhere. The end theme was so hauntingly amazing.
Finally you have covered one of the Legendary Classic games from my childhood. Unless you had this game and played it it was hard to describe to others. If there was ever to be a remake or a remastered version of a game this definitely needs to be on the list.
This is my favorite NES game bar none. Watching your video is giving me an itch to play through it again. I have honestly lost count of how many times I have gone through it.
@29:06 it's actually much easier to program it in this direction (Y+ = down). This is how all the graphics hardware in the system works, and it's just less error prone (and more intuitive for a developer) to use the same coordinate system everywhere. (Honestly, Y+ being up in modern systems/math is still confusing for me sometimes.) The reason why the graphics hardware goes Y+ = down is because CRT scan lines are drawn from top to bottom (i.e. line 0 is the top most scan line, and ~240 is the bottom most).
Ah, beat me to it. Came to say the same about scan lines. I've never touched NES hardware, but Gameboy works like this. Y going up as you go down holds true in modern games like Minecraft, and even on web pages.
My uncle got me this game for Christmas one year and I remember being kind of disappointed at first until I got to level 2 and realized it wasn't just a space shooter! After that I loved it!
I’ve been begging mike Matteo for years, years to play through this just for the feels and I mean come on part Zelda part schmup in space that’s right up his ally. You beat him to it fantastic call on this gem
This is one of my all time favorite games of all time. Once I reacquired an NES, this was one of the first games I sought out. Absolutely LOVED it as a kid. And yes the soundtrack is incredible.
You heard us!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!! I had never seen that Guardian Legend commercial before. But what if I told you I have absolutely no idea what to ask for next :)
Wow... you ACTUALLY did it!!! I believe this game was requested for a while (yeah, I'm guilty as charged about this one too), this for sure will help me to complete the game, as I got stuck and I believe I'll be able to remove this game from my backlog and from the games I left in hiatus.
I always love your subversion of the story! "Are we the baddies?" is such a great thing to ask yourself! Pertinent as well as hilarious. Eris is proud!
I have never watched a channel in which the video can be over 2 hours and I’m hooked the entire time. I don’t even know this game and already want to seek it out to play it. Great job man! You have such a huge talent for this kind of entertainment.
Very nice! I passed this one up at the video store so many times when I was a kid. I finally gave it a try in my late teens after a good friend recommended it. It immediately became one of my favorite Nintendo games of all time. Very, very nice! Thanks for all you do!
I remember renting this game from the gas station back when I was a kid. I loved it but I never understood the game lol. I completely forgot about it until just now seeing this video. I need to give this one a play through now that I'm older! So glad to see this video drop today!
That’s awesome that your gas station rented games. Mine did too. It was a Gas City. Ah the 80’s what a great time to be a kid. My dad would rent games and three stooges videos there for us to watch and play. Great memories.
Just beat it. I love playing along with these videos. It's comforting and I've beaten many games I never though I could beat. Thanks for the awesome work
Oh dear...this was such an awesome, yet frustrating game. It took me many weekend rentals at the local video store/club place to beat it. You do nostalgia right; strong work doggo (yes I am convinced that it is the dog playing the games), keep the vids coming.
I have a lot of good memories attached to this game. I remember seeing that very commercial and was why I spent my allowance on The Guardian Legend. This video is full of nostalgia, thank you.
YEEEAAAAHHH!! My dream came true! I asked for this some time ago and here it is! One of the best games of ALL TIME! And one of the best "guides" to it as well! Thank you!
For those interested, IREM still holds the rights to the title. Although Compile developed it, it was a commission (rights reserved) to IREM. Back in 2012, someone contacted IREM directly, the response was that, yes, they retained the rights and weren't interested in further developing it or selling off the rights. Now it's 2022, I think it's about time someone up and asked IREM once more about the title rights or a possible remake. It would be nice if Compile Heart (the spiritual successor to Compile) could acquire the rights and do something with it. If multiple people make the inquiry, it might just be enough to get IREM to budge.
This game is FANTASTIC! I always thought it looked so cool when I saw it in Nintendo Power, so I asked my dear mother to get it for me. I was blown away by how good it was! It has stuck with me as a highlight of the NES and of my childhood. And this video is so awesome! I'm learning things about it I never knew, like those numerical details about what deals what damage and so on.
Thanks for this video man.. I never owned this game on the NES but use to rent it when I was a kid and never could get very far. I recently bought an X-pro II retro console with practically every game imaginable from that era and decided to finally beat this game decades after first playing it. I came across this video and it was a great help. Definitely earned my subscription!
I have to say, I love your stuff. Actraiser was awesome, Ive been playing that since I was a kid and I learned a bunch of things I didn't know, like building the towns a certain way to max out the population. You should do Soulblazer, that game is still one of my favorites. Good stuff, great channel.
I just played through this using the guide. I had a blast. I can't believe I never rented this, or played this as a kid. Nobody had it. Glad you brought it to my purview and happy that I gave it a shot.
One of my favorite games ever,i caught it being sold for 5$ at kroger rentals as a kid best money ever spent i've beat it plenty of times though all 20 corridors, one of my favorite theme songs too
YESS! The guardian legend is one of the best games on nes. Great to see you go through it. I tried to do a main gun only run. Eventually you gotta use the e.e flash to clear the screen cause it gets so full its un dodgable. I got to the bone stage but never could beat it without the secondary weapons.
Yes! Been waiting for this one! I usually watch these on double speed, but I love the music so much, and this game is so good, regular speed plus saving to my Watch Again list!
I’m pretty sure I hit the Like button on this video right when it was released. This weeks, I played along with the video. Had a great time and thanks for the work.
Dude this is probably the best game I’ve ever played on the nes my personal favorite soundtrack of the 8 bit era too thank you so much for doing this game.
I remember picking up this cartridge when I was around 15 second hand, had an eye-catching cover. Absolutely loved it, the constant mix of space shooter and Zelda action, and what an amazing soundtrack! Don’t believe I ever finished it, but wouldn’t matter, was always fun to pop in and start over.
Although never stated in the US version, in the Japanese version, the protagonist's name is System D.P. and her nickname is Miria. Miria's portrait is during the credits, which is how she's supposed to look: a petite high school girl with short brown hair.

TGL is one of my TOP 5 and deserve to be on EVERY true gamer's list. This game makes ZELDA looks like child's play and every other old/modern games feel "Outdated". An unknown gem sadly....a very true master piece. I can't say enough good thing about it...
I used to rent this one all the time, I think you’re right when you say the box art hurt it’s popularity. I was pretty young when I was playing it and had a hell of a time finding it on the shelves amongst the other titles.
This was one of my favorite games on NES. A gradeschool friend lent it to me and moved away, so I ended up keeping the game. I went back and beat it once every 6 months or so until I moved on to the SNES.
this game is very challenging without a guide( no internet back then just friends sharing ideas what to do while wandering around the mazes.) thank you for playing this masterpiece
One of my fav NES games and one I bought as a kid with my own money. I loved this game and it still has a big spot in making me love games. The initial music that comes in on the first flying stage is among my all time favorite video game music. Thank you for doing this game. I'm shocked you did it since its not so mainstream. I suggested it once before and didn't know if you saw my suggestion but I like to think ya did, LOL. Thanks again for doing this favorite of mine :D
The Guardian Legend is one of my top ten nintendo games, it had great gameplay, cool power-ups and an epic soundtrack. I really enjoyed this video, 2 thumbs up. 👍👍
Coming back to watch this video a year later just to experience it again. Now Im experiencing nostalgia for a video that I watched to enjoy nostalgic childhood memories.
This is one of my all-time favorites; so glad that you covered this, and also that you mentioned Sigma Star Saga! Funny story: I actually had a dream about The Lost Frontier; I was shooting at a wall in Area 0, and it opened into this mostly black area that looks a bit like the last part of NES Ikari Warriors (which I hadn't played at the time), and from there, I found an open door that looks like the one at the end of A Link to the Past. That led to some really surreal areas that I can't even describe. When I woke up, I checked it out on a whim, and learned about The Lost Frontier, which wasn't quite the same, but I've seen some really strange things there. As for the subweapons, some of them are unable to break open the item drops until you reach level 2 with them; I know the wave beam is one of which. I think the hyper laser isn't usable in the labyrinths because the corridors force you to shoot it vertically; only a certain number of sprites are allowed on a horizontal line, and a laser would take up the whole screen, so that would be too much, and the graphics are made up of squares, so diagonal lasers would look really strange. That said, it is still weird that they didn't just come up with something else, so that you could use them all in the labyrinth.
One of my top 3 Nes games alongside Faxanadu and Low G Man. Incidentally for people itching to get more guardian action there's a romhack (way more difficult btw) called Guardian Legend Secret Edition.
TGL was very first game i rented at blockbuster back in the early 90's and i picked up the very same cartridge when they were going out of business - full circle
"I don't know why (the shopkeeper) would want to help us." Probably for the same reason he's willing to sell the alien stranger weapons in the first place: to get rid of the infestation of Naju and see the mission to activate the self-destruct completed, even at risk to himself. Were the "Round Creatures" the original benevolent inhabitants of Naju who created the civilization? The invaders mostly look like natural creatures while the shopkeeper offers high technology compatible with the Guardian (nature vs. technology).
One of my all time favorite games. Been waiting for this episode since you mentioned on another video to one of my comments you were planning on doing it. I learned a few glitches for my next play through.
I've said it before, I'll say it again. I love these videos, even if I've beaten the game myself on my own. I threw this in and beat it at the start of the pandemic. Never beat it as a kid, and holy shit, it was HARD. Not at first of course, but man some of those bosses towards the end really kicked my ass. I can't remember how much armor stuff I found either, I'm pretty sure I missed at least one maybe two. The final few shooter areas I was taking constant damage, but getting power ups so fast it didn't matter. It's so hectic. Felt really good when I got a selfie w/ the finish screen on my CRT. :)
I am so grateful to this dog. He teaches us to beat so many video games. He is a real good boy.
I know right?! And he doesn’t even have opposable thumbs! Kylo is a very good boy!
He sure is.
And after every lesson the goddest boy takes a well deserved nap on the couch.
The goodest boy is beats all the ruff games.

25:07 is where he discusses the lost frontier.
I spent hours playing this when I was younger. loved it! I still play it on an emulated device
Thanks for sharing these old video games and how to beat them! Makes me want to replay some of them. Looking forward for more videos!!
Heavy Barrel next! The GL was soo awesome, I appreciate all the hard work you have been dedicating into producing videos. Thanks again!
The day I get on a plane to move to Seattle you play this gem… I’ve been patiently waiting for this one!!!! WOOHOO
Good luck in your new adventure !

"I don't know why (the shopkeeper) would want to help us."
Probably for the same reason he's willing to sell the alien stranger weapons in the first place: to get rid of the infestation of Naju and see the mission to activate the self-destruct completed, even at risk to himself.
Yay! With your help, I finally beat Guardian Legend after nearly 35 years of trying!
I love this game I grew up with this game, hell I still go back and play this game lol. The music is unforgettable and underrated
Have been waiting for this for a long time. So glad it has become that time. Thank you!
