There were some sick concepts in the 70s but this is one of the best. Imagine things had gone this way and we had cars like this today on the street. Even 50 years after its birth this car is pure scifi.
What an amazing piece of machine!! despite being from the 70s, still turns heads.. And thanks for all the details in the description Appreciate the good work👍🏼
phenomenal to see this in motion after only seeing it in car design books as a teen in the 80s ... As much fun as the 12 cylinder sounds, today I would take this shape with a high-performance PHEV drivetrain and use it to commute to work EVERY day.
I saw this car in a small repair shop in Modena when it was being repaired after the exhaust fire damage. Had the chance to see it very up close (I could've even touched it but I didn't want to.) and snap many pics. It's such a cool piece of history and human genius, seeing it up close is a completely unique experience!
Funny thing is the only reason it existed was Ferrari made one too many engines for their racing operations and the team hadn't used them all up! Ferrari was stuck with an engine and no car so they gave it to their designers and told them to design whatever they liked with NO restrictions. First time I've heard of a Ferrari car designed AROUND THE ENGINE and not vice versa... PS: when Formula one teams were asked by a magazine what they would do if the sport had no restrictions at all, Ferrari said they'd use a 6 wheeler! There was even a prototype made for shits and giggles. It had two front wheels and four rear wheels. The test driver ranted and raved all day about the INSANE grip it had through the corners. I'm sure it would absolutely wipe the floor with the McLarens at circuits like Suzuka.
There were 6 wheeled F1 cars, but four up front and two in the rear. I always forget the company who made them. The Stig (Ben Collins) says they're crazy, but also amazing!
It's not as bad as one would think. The owner had a mechanic take it for a test drive but most of the bodywork was off the car so it was literally like an F1 car with the top half removed. He tried to make a U-turn in a VERY tight intersection but still had to back up about 10' to turn completely around. I was surprised how docile it was when moving along at 15-20 mph with a manual from the 1970s...
Couple of month ago I saw this car in the flesh while being fixed. I couldn't believe that I was living just five minutes from the shop of the maestros who worked on it. Glad to see it running again
I couldn’t put my finger on it,but when I look at this car the noise of the engine didn’t fit the car,but when I read your comment it all made sense,it’s very like a modern solar prototype.
Yeah 2 minutes ago I did not dare say think that yeah its one of them electro type of bodies si no fi anymore still have a 12 cilinder generator fan tas tick
This was my dream car until I saw the BMW Turbo. The Modolo's front wheel covers that seem to limit its turning radius are an inspiration for future high-speed rail trainsets. I watched an interview of the Pininfarina CEO and saw a scale model of a train on a shelf behind his desk. It looked like back-to-back EMUs from the AnsaldoBreda V250 Fyra, designed by Pininfarina for Dutch and Belgian railways. The Fyra's design was fine but AnsaldoBreda mucked up the actual build; now these trains run exclusively in Italy. The CEO was a kid when the company built the Modolo and his memories of its origins as an unofficial project are so loving. Just like my memories of how I used to watch my Hot Wheels version leave the track before it even got to the jump ramp.
James Glickenhaus is insanely down to earth and a real car guy, (similar to Jay Leno), and he would talk to you for hours about this car and probably let you drive it if you asked. Amazing machine from an amazing person.
Such a nice car! Nice to see it being driven. 👌 PS: That sound the engine makes when it starts up, like a wrench being thrown into a tool box, always makes me giggle.
I would love to retrofit it with the latest V12 engine Ferrari offers just to see how fast it can go. Or for shits and giggles, we could take a V10 from the championship winning F2000 car and REALLY make it breathe fire...
Kids, wash your mouths out when you are talking about a design masterpiece as the Pininfarina Modulo. The concept was presented at the Geneva Car Show in 1970 (!) and is still considered one of the more remarkable example of pure futuristic design. The maquette was been bought by the multi millionaire car enthusiast James Glickenhaus who decided to transform it as a running one-off prototype. The work was made by Manifattura Automobili Torino (MAT) and the car has actually a value of dozens millions dollar. So to take a slow shake-down on track of such a jewel is something very reasonable, don’t you?
@@EttoreTecno666 the sit is at the right side because was like that also on the concept. Obviously carburetors as is clearly visible on the video. Remember a nice drawing of this car on the last page of a children´s book of the ´70s as a hint of the future of transportation. Never imagined the original concept car frame would be fitted with a 12 ice cream cones engine and could run at last on a track. Those Italians know about desing, mechanics and gelatto power!
this paradoxical design philosophy of sleek and nimble but with massive tires and plenty of ground clearance, kinda got left in the 70s with this and the HF Zero

The V12 was taken from a Can Am racer because the season ended and they had one too many spare engines. So Ferrari gave it to their design department and said they could literally go nuts with a car for it. We have to give credit when people take these cars to the road/ track. That is their natural habitat.... beautiful sound, beautiful design. Great video.
I love the interior and exterior styling. Like the Maserati Boomerang, this is a true vision of a future that we never quite got. Ironically, the Ferrari powertrain doesn't really match the rest of the design. It seems that the Modulo should be quick, but quiet and refined, with something like a turbine or electric motor, instead of the roaring V12. Even so, it's an amazing and unique car.
With any other brand, this would sound strange. But this being a Ferrari, it feels oddly fitting that a car of the future would allow the driver to hear a true Old World V12 whining behind the seats...
I have a toy car of this which I bought over 40 years ago which I still have. It's great to see the car actually moving and on a track. Fantastic look at the future from way back then.
