I think what made yo kai watch so great for me was that it was super chill. Pokemon's setting is like '' ok kid you're in a supernatural fantasy setting where wild pokemon attack you out of nowhere and you gotta be the champion of the entire country '' and yo kai watch is like '' yo do you wanna do random stuff throughout your day? ''
As a pokemon fan for 10 plus years, yokai watch blew me away, the game is just insanely charming, detailed and well... great! I'm so glad this franchise exists as it surpasses pokemon in a lot of ways
This franchise as a whole was so unbelievably off the walls while maintaining it’s chill atmosphere. There was never a goal or overarching story line that Nate had to achieve. He started as some random dude and continued life as some random dude, only now he can interact with Yokai. There was never really an end game and that’s what made it great.
Great retrospective. I actually was introduced to Yo-Kai Watch before Pokémon. I have so much nostalgia for this series. While I may play Pokémon now, I will always prefer Yo-Kai Watch over it. I hope this series can make a comeback someday.
YKW1 always amazed me when I first played it with how good its animation is and how every monster had voice acting of some kind. It only gets better with 2 and 3 with story, content, challenge and more. 13:57 I strongly disagree with things like Cheeksqueak being a "miss". This part kinda feels like a bit of a culture clash because when you look into kind of scary and creepy things that actual Japanese youkai do, Cheeksqueak seems cute, funny, tame and even consistent to it. They are myths and legends of a very foreign nation, so of course alot of them are going to look strange or off-putting to Americans that are more familiar with European myth. The kappa youkai is known to steal people's souls by sticking their hands up the person's butt and the best way for a person to defend themselves from that is by farting in their face. There's also Shirime which is a youkai that just scares people by spreading its buttcheeks to show them it has an eyeball between them. Looking at the old paintings and art of how these things are portrayed, you start to appreciate how cute, colorful and cartoony even things like Cheeksqueak are in comparison. The ideas look weird to us cuz they're foreign, but to the Japanese, this kind of stuff is just normal myth and they love it. It's why Gegege no Kitaro (whose art style leans more towards the scary traditional youkai art) is such a beloved classic that even has statues erected of its characters and that series among dozens of others did a crossover with YKW.
I was speaking almost purely on a character design level in that section, but yeah, you probably still got a point with it being a bit of a cultural difference even then.
I remember watching my cartoons and seeing Yo-Kai Watch during the ads on teletoon. I Never saw it as a “Pokémon clone” and enjoyed every second of it. Playing it now and really taking my time with it, I realized how absolutely charming and detailed the game truly is! I love this series and have been on the hunt ever since to purchase the 2nd and 3rd main instalments.

my best friend and i always watched the cartoon toghether. best times of my life acting like nate. i then played the games and loved the franchise even more😊
This series deserved so much better. It had an anime that was pretty good and fun, 3 games (Blasters doesn’t count) that were pretty good all things considered, and a bunch of toys that kids and buy (heck even I bought some). I wish we got more things from Yo-Kai Watch in the states
@@jumentoqueanima Blasters was mainly a side game in my eyes that derived from a side game in 2. It didn’t follow the typical rpg elements the other 3 games had and was more of a dungeon crawler than anything else. Plus I never got a chance to play it before the eshop went kaput
I would’ve said this was a great retrospective BUT you dissed the intro song from yw1 and seeing as the song is objectively a BANGER, I can’t let that go 😔 In all seriousness tho I loved being able to look back through this game! It’s nice to know there’s a good chunk of us who will ride or die for this little, niche game! Great video!!
Abandoned Tunnels Boss was so unfair they had to nerf him hard in the sequel (but man was it satisfying to nuke him postgame). The super tedious specific Bug catching for some key items and yo kai coins (wich i swear took me more time then beating the story) got reworked in the sequel too, with rarer bugs having a much bigger catch radius and bugs getting exchanged into currency that you can spent in the Bushbazaar)
Thanks! Be sure to get the games off the eshop while you can. Some later entries are already incredibly hard to get physically, so it's only gonna get worse after the closure.
Yo-Kai Watch is such a fun series, it's a shame it got hit with the "Pokemon ripoff/clone" label early on... As a Digimon, Monster Rancher, *and* Pokemon fan, it's quite frustrating. XD One thing I love about the first game is Terror Time, as the rewards were usually worth the risk especially if you could get those rare gemstones to fuse onto broken jewelry to make epic equipment. I was very sad when 2 didn't bring those back... Also locking the crystalnyans behind a rare crank-a-kai that was random if you'd ever get one at all versus the optional battle to befriend it the old fashioned way (though to be fair, they're SUPER hard!). I will also say, the closest I can compare Yo-Kai Watch's battle system is a combination of Digimon World on PS1 (as your partner kinda does its own thing despite some minor commanding you can attempt) and Jade Cocoon 2 with the rotating wheel. Also another thing Yo-Kai Watch shares more in common with *is* Digimon, considering the pallet swap options, multiple versions of certain mascot monsters (ToyAgumon, Tsukaimon, and Psychemon to list a few), along with Fusion evolution that makes me think of the Shin Megami Tensei series... Maaan, Yo-Kai Watch has so many good elements to it~

I found out about this series via the anime at the time. I enjoyed watching and would try to tune into days when new episodes aired. Very shortly I would find out that Level 5 made videos games to coexist with the anime. At the time, I never got into the games, I kind of brushed it off. Shame since I had a 3DS at the time, I could've persued the games if I wanted too. As for the anime series I was actively following the episodes as the years passed. It was until the faithful day when the channel provider at the time (Disney XD) stopped showing new episodes and only reruns. I was devastated. I believed I stopped at the season where they introduced the new female protagonist of the series (purple hair, wears glasses iirc and has an astronaut cat or bear looking yokai) I watched the first few episodes of the season. Fast forward to this year (2023) and I randomly remembered the show. I did some research and quickly found out that the series _did_ continue, but I think the series was no longer dubbed in English? I think at the time Level 5 had to axe their western division for whatever reason. Shame too because iirc, at that time the Professor Layton series wasn't selling like they used to and I was fond of those games. Thankfully, now that I have a laptop I think I will continue to binge watch the anime series till the end and since I still have my 3DS (now homebrewed) I can finally start to play the games.I really want to revisit the anime and perhaps play the games for the first time.

I wish there was a negotiation system like in Shin Megami Tensei just my taste I guess. Also the combat could be better don’t much care for the guiding hand approach it lacks depth outside of postgame. Maybe I’m just spoiled by SMT and Persona. Great video will watch the rest.
Will you cover all versions of yw2 in one video?
That's the plan at the moment, it's bound to be a long one. But I'll have it structured in a way I can easily break it off into two parts if I feel I need to.
thank you
Is anyone aware of the fact you can use the stylus to move around in the overworld? (Like in Inazuma Eleven)
What was your control set up for your playthrough with the emulator?
