M14 - Black Ops Multiplayer Weapon Guide

In this episode, we're covering the third weapon in the assault rifle category - the M14.
It's a semi-automatic weapon in-game, and is unlocked at level 9.
Originating from the United States, the M14 was adopted by the US army in 1957, and was standard issue from 1959 until it was replaced by the M16 in 1970.
Essentially a derivation of the M1 Garand, with the introduction of a removable magazine, replacing the earlier en-bloc clip used in the Garand, and with the addition of the capability of fully-automatic fire.
This technically makes the M14 a Battle rifle, rather than an assault rifle, as it fires a full-sized cartridge with selective-fire.
After a series of prototypes made post World-War 2, the M14 trumped the FN FAL in the US Army's testing and saw its first action in the Vietnam War.
Although unwieldy and not ideal for jungle combat, it performed adequately until superceded by the lightweight, more modern design of the M16.
The M14 remains in use today, however - although not ideal for general infantry use it's found a niche in the Designated Marksman Role, and as part of the M21 and later M24 Sniper Weapons Systems.
Magazine capacity is 20 rounds, identical to the other semi-automatic rifle - the FAL.
Extended mags will give you 30 rounds per magazine.
The cartridge fired is the NATO standard rifle cartridge - the 7.62 by 51 millimetre.
This calibre's roots lie in the earlier, larger 30-aught-6 rifle cartridge, as fired by the earlier M1903 Springfield rifle.
Essentially a shortened variant, the new cartridge was to be known commercially as the .308 Winchester before being adopted as the NATO standard in 1954.
Damage in-game is the highest of all weapons in the assault rifle category - only the sniper rifles deal more damage per shot.
At just two hits to the body at close range - and 3 at a distance, the M14 shares the same damage profile as the FAL - but boasts a greater multiplier to the head and neck, for a greater chance at a two-shot kill.
This means that, even at long range, a single headshot with another to the body is sufficient to kill - where with the FAL you'd need two headshots.
Firecap is standard for the single-shot weapons, at 625 rounds per minute.
Generally speaking, this cap isn't much of a hindrance - as shooting at that rate would compound the very high level of recoil.
Although high, the recoil can be tamed by moderating your fire rate depending on your distance from your target - waiting for the recoil to settle to an acceptable level before firing again.
Aim time is standard for the assault rifles, and reload is among the slowest but manageable nonetheless, at 2.4 seconds.
One of the key aspects to using the assault rifles is to ensure you're firing from a good position - whether on the offence or in a defensive role you need to ensure that you're using available cover to maximum effect.
The more of your player model you expose to the enemy, the easier it is for your foe to hit you - and landing accurate shots with a weapon like the M14 under fire is very tricky indeed.
When choosing a firing location, you should try and find a position that provides as much coverage as possible - ideally cover should extend to just underneath your point of aim.
In Call Of Duty your point of aim is centred on your head, so if your sights are just above cover, all your opponent will see is the very top of your character model - little more than a pair of eyes and a helmet.
Any available cover can be used to your advantage - even corners can be used to some effect, as you can control the angle of exposure and take complete cover when at risk of incoming fire - useful when reloading.
The M14 is the most powerful weapon in the assault rifle category - outclassing even the FAL thanks to its superior multipliers.
It also boasts a superior hipfire spread when compared to the FAL, something which will occasionally come in useful should you be taken by surprise.
Its main downside is its heavy recoil, forcing you to limit your rate of fire to preserve accuracy.
Compared to the automatic weapons, it's likely you'll fare less well in close quarters - although you'll only need two hits to kill, the weapon with the faster rate of fire often comes out on top.
Good use of cover or getting on target first can help, but something like an SMG or the FAMAS will be tough to beat.
Still, if employed correctly and carefully you can engineer situations in your favour - with a claymore to watch your back and the use of long sightlines and cover you can keep your enemy at arm's reach.
As a counter to its damage, the M14 has the most severe recoil in the assault rifle category, but it can be tamed with careful shooting - and it's hard to argue against a two-shot kill.

Such an underrated weapon by the community. So many people swear by the FN FAL's smaller upwards recoil and option for Dual Mags and ignore the M14's neat advantages (Grip, exclusively vertical recoil, and having the default AR hip-fire spread).

@TheCavsman22 The less flinch is a nice bonus - but it's only a factor if you take incoming fire. Stay in cover and your opponent won't stand a chance of hitting you.

The grip was essential when using this gun. I preferred this gun over the FAL, the FAL had really heavy and unusual recoil.
The flamethrower is actually for killing multiple enemies quickly at close range(if you do not kill them quickly some will get away or manage to kill you, even if you come from behind).
M14 is really powerful if you can use it. It was hard to use at first but with practice I learned how to use it and I could use it effectively at any range. I also got double dogs with it which is really good for me as I'm usually bad in getting good killstreaks.

Nah. That thing is a terrible rifle and it rightfully got replaced ASAP back in Vietnam, then again when it got brought out during the Afghan War. It loses its zero when too easily and the action needs constant rebedding to maintain accuracy. Not to mention the controls and design were outdated as before it was adopted. AK47, STG-44, and the AR10 were all older than it yet had more modern controls. Such a stupid design, only got adopted because of some absolute lunacy desicion making by the Army Ordnance Board. There's a reason they got disbanded after the faults from the M14 started rolling in and they decided to sabotage the AR15 right after when it was being tested for adoption as the M16.
I just now noticed that technically, the gun in-game is an M14 with the stock from an M14E2/M14A1 stock on it, the squad support variant that was considered in the mid 60s as something akin to the BAR, but abandoned in development

There is something I want to point out, the m14 is based off the m1 Garand, but it was its own rifle during world war 2 as a smaller carbine rifle, but as the m14 evolved, it is now become its own platform for rifles, and because it chamber the .308 cartridge, it’s still in heavy use as a marksman rifle used by the United States to this very day
M1 carbine is not the m14. I think the m14 replaced the Garand in 1958 and wasn't used in WW2. The M14 was short lived as that was replaced in 1965/66
is it just me, or do the red dot and reflex sights seem more obtrusive on PlayStation? They have some sort of glare. I dunno, I think it's just my TV

@Shadogun That loadout isn't really suited to the M14. You'd be better off with the FAMAS - and even then the flamethrower is unreliable when you consider Flak Jacket Pro.

I love this gun. Many people think it's bad compared to fully automatic guns like the galil or famas but its damage and accuracy are high making this gun quite dangerous to fast trigger fingers.
That's what you think. The Suppressor actually make the M14 more covert and even though it has a bit of a damage drop off, it's not as severe as it is on other guns.

The M-14 is my favorite weapon. The large kick usually garentee's* head shots, and the iron sights are amazing. I usually just slap a grip on it because the suppressor never works for me.

By the way the M14 shares almost the same clone and color of the FAL.....I always go with the M14 in multiplayer while for FAL in zombies......

superior to the fal in every way except for recoil, but the recoil isn't that bad anyways so it's not an issue. here's a really fun rushing class with it:

ballistic knife
lightweight
steady aim
marathon/hacker (depends on the map and the opponents you're fighting, you generally don't need to sprint too long when you're inside of a building so marathon isn't essential)
hipfire at shotgun range, aim at longer distances, and switch to the ballistic knife so you can stab people when rushing into buildings. the extended mag is so you don't have to stop and reload as often which means you can keep up your momentum.

I find that the m14 can kill in one hit to the head even on un-damaged enemies, I found this last for up to an estimated 75 m.

This was my weapon of choice until I unlocked the FAL, which I used from then on, since it didn't need the grip attachment and could use the suppressor. See, I would always attach the ACOG, Red Dot, or Reflex scopes to my weapons (excluding sniper rifles, where I usually attached the Variable Zoom scope), since I'm generally bad with iron sights.

why don't you use reflex sight on the m14 cause my experience with black ops it will decrease recoil.
It doesn't. It just makes aiming easier because you get a cleaner picture than with iron sights.

+Jamar Johnson It just feels nicer and that feeling can be mistaken for an actual increase in accuracy. I'd actually recommend not using the ACOG as it increases recoil in this game (it lowers it in Black Ops 2 and 3 however).
Charlie WithaQ I tested it and I their is no increase or decrease in recoil ( all guns that have the reflex sight and took me about a hour)

I love this weapon in Hard core mode. With careful (but quick) aim I just pick targets off efficiently.

the m14 had actually been fully automatic as well as pretty accurate when used in Vietnam, but they used something else since it was expensive to make as it worked a little too well than necessary. Or so they say, try looking it up on several sources.
No, a magazine is the thing that feeds ammunition into the chamber of the gun, a clip is something that you use to put ammunition in a magazine really fast.

I loved using this weapon in Combat Training-Hardcore-1 on 9. I liked to use the ACOG and suppressor for an improvised M21.

It doesn't. It has a firecap: a limit to how fast it can fire. If you fire faster you oversample the weapon's fire rate and this theoretically reduces your rate of fire.
The firecap is 0.096s (625 RPM); fire more than once in that time frame and the firecap will reduce your fire rate.
If you can fire the trigger faster than 625 RPM it will make the gun "jam"

The other automatic assault rifles with low rates of fire are also one shot kills in Hardcore and are easier to use than the M14 and FAL so it wouldn't really have a special place there. The semiautomatic rifles just aren't well balanced in this game.
Not really. The Commando, AK47, and Galil do very good damage at range and are easier to use at long range, especially considering the recoil the M14 has without grip or taking your time between shots which. Ironically the M14 and FAL are actually better than the automatic ARs if you can land both shots needed to kill at close range. It's not really good tbh. Just unlock it and use it.

the commando used in black ops is actually an early variant of the M16 with an 11.5 inch barrel and i believe the M4a1 is the 4th major variation of the Commando and the second modification made to the M4 carbine
Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare had 2 claymores, which came in handy when you had 2 entrances to cover. This, however was not carried over to the other call of duty games unfortunatly. They should have added this to the claymore level up option, say you get 75 or 100 kills with a claymore and you get an extra one added to your loadout.
Woo, this weapon and the M60 are amazing. I miss them. In every game so far there are a few guns that are really fun using, these were the BO ones (as well as the python with an Acog :) )
If you really want to use an underbarrel or a non-warlord perk, try aiming a little below the head, on the second shot, if you time it right, your gun will be aiming right at their forehead. A little trick you learn when hopping around with an F2K.

I agree. Using irons means you dont have to use warlord with red dot which leads you to sleight of hand. Its one of the best if not the best gun in the game pared with grip.

Combine Lightweight and Steady Aim, and the M14 becomes a juggernaut in close quarters. I love it.
@XxSlayerBeastxX Today we are covering the melee weapon the fork. It has been used since 972 and is a common eating utensil other than asia with its counterpart, the chopsticks. This weapon is used for melee and light-weight and has a high melee attack per minute. The perks I recommend with it would be light weight for speed, steady aim for its quick melee recovery and marathon for sprinting long distances to catch the enemy.
I feel like he can make the Strella look like the awesomest weapon possible...
Two things here:
1) I was aware that there existed a model of the M14 fitted with a pistol grip (the M15 or M14A1), but did NOT realize that it was the model for the M14 in-game.
2) Thank you for trying to be the first to illuminate upon me the truth, but you are the thirtieth person to tell me this.
They were all Full Auto but you are right they would often try welding the fire selectors to keep the regular Assault Gunners on Semi-Auto while the Support Gunners were allowed Full Auto.

This is my weapon of choice. Though Ahoy taught me so much more about it.
The lack of the automatic fire setting in-game is a missed opportunity. I feel like it could be fun if implemented properly.
I can still remember on one occasion I decided to use this gun more for experimental purposes with the grip attachment on Jungle, ended up with 46 kills 8 deaths, I can't recall 1 of my killstreaks but I do remember getting a huey and dogs so they contributed to my wave of kills, despite that this was an amazing gun that is powerful and effective and was undoubtedly underrated.🙂

Try this.First perk.Ghost.Second perk.Warlord.Last perk.Gas mask.M14 with grip and silencer.Secondary Makarov.Equipment Tactical insertion.Try it.Best with close range

Whenever an enemy Spy Plane was in the air, I'd switch over to the class I had the Ghost perk and M72 LAW or Strela-3 launcher equipped to and shoot it down.

The M14 is king at mid range and on hardcore. Add an ACOG or reflex sight and a suppressor and grab a suppressed pistol for hardcore dominance. I love outshooting the snipers with my beloved DMR.

@ThePMRadio I feel the same mate. but the reason people use other weapons, instead of the M-14, like the Famas and the AK-74u is because those weapons are much easier to use with little practice required to get good with them. also the M14 has a higher damage multiplier to the head then the FN-FAL plus the M-14 looks much better and is much more satisfying to use.
No, production M21's (improved M14s) today and the original M14 from the 1950s had a rifle grip, not a pistol grip. The latter would have to have been retrofitted.
