SPAS-12 - Black Ops Multiplayer Weapon Guide

In this episode we're covering the third Shotgun - the SPAS-12.
It's a semi-automatic weapon, and is unlocked at level 24.
The Franchi Special Purpose Automatic Shotgun, or the SPAS-12, hails from Italian arms manufacturer, Luigi Franchi.
First produced in 1979, the weapon is unusual in that it can be used in both a semi-automatic and pump-action mode.
This means the SPAS-12 can fire cartridges that otherwise might lack the power to cycle a semi-automatic weapon - such as less-than-lethal rounds or tear gas.
In spite of this versatility, the dual-mode operation adds weight and complexity to the weapon - adding to its expense and limiting its suitability to niche roles.
It was the 'lack of sporting purpose' that led to the weapon being banned from import in the United States, making the SPAS-12 a rare weapon known for its distinctive appearance and prolific presence in cinema.
The tube magazine holds 8 rounds, making the SPAS-12 the shotgun with the highest capacity in Black Ops.
The cartridge fired is your standard 2 and 3-quarter inch 12-gauge cartridge, as usual for a weapon in this class.
Damage in-game is low compared to the Olympia and Stakeout - although the SPAS-12 is entirely capable of killing in one shot, you'll notice it will take 2 or 3 shots to kill towards the end of your effective range.
Thankfully the low damage is balanced somewhat with a good rate of fire and healthy magazine - as a semi-auto weapon you can usually rely on getting the shots you need on target in relatively short order.
312 rounds per minute is less than most semi-automatic weapons, but with the close-range power of the SPAS-12, it's more than adequate.
Aim time is quick at 200 milliseconds, but the iron sights are very obstructive on the SPAS-12 - so it's fortunate that hipfiring is almost always the way to go, especially if you're using Steady Aim.
Reload is done shell-by-shell, and is a little slower than the Stakeout - especially if you have to replenish the entire 8-round magazine.
Still, reloading can be cancelled partway should you run into trouble, and if done with care should seldom result in your death.
While silenced shotguns aren't new to the Call of Duty series - the suppressed SPAS-12 is notable in that the Suppressor does not impact your effective range in any way.
Given that you'll be spending a lot of time in close proximity to your enemy, the suppressor is invaluable in keeping you alive - there's really no excuse not to use it.
For that reason, my attachment recommendation for the SPAS-12 is simple: Use the suppressor.
For your equipment, in the absence of Marathon, Tactical Insertions are very, very useful.
As a ghost with a shotgun, spawning in an unexpected place will often work to your advantage.
With the ability to cancel the insertion spawn should it be compromised, the risks of spawning so close to the enemy can be mitigated - and in my experience most enemies will be entirely unaware that the blinking light will soon spell their doom.
Careful movement is a core skill for any stealth class - rather than rushing blindly into combat, instead you must bide your time, watch the radar and get a sense for your enemy's position.
There's more to stealth than prowling in the shadows, however - and you'll need to perform a fair bit of manoeuvring to get into an ideal position.
Striking from the flank or rear is absolutely the best approach with any suppressed weapon, so in some cases you'll need to take the long way round to ensure a better chance at a successful strike.
You'll want to avoid central, open areas - most of them will leave you exposed across multiple angles, and at ranges where you won't be competitive - instead move as much as possible through less-trafficked areas of the map, and covered locations and interiors.
The SPAS-12 is a potent stealth weapon, unique in that it's the only shotgun with the suppressor attachment available - and unusual in that it doesn't hamper the weapon's performance.
This combination of a close range one-hit kill and the suppressor makes it a devastating weapon when employed against inattentive foes - allowing you to strike a group from the flank or rear and destroy them all before the last realises their demise.
As with all the shotguns though, your limited range is your downfall - and if you're caught outside it you won't stand much of a chance.
Even at close range it's important to maintain the element of surprise, as the SPAS-12's lower damage might mean you'll need multiple shots on target to secure the kill. Faster follow-up shots mean the weapon is more forgiving of poor aim - and more suited to dislodging defenders and clearing rooms.
If played to its strengths there's no doubting its effectiveness in close quarters - and when paired with the suppressor the SPAS-12 is silent - but deadly.

in the film "Jurassic Park". His intention was to "hunt" raptors, but this decision proved fatal. He spots a raptor and gets in position to aim. But whilst he was preparing to take down one raptor, a second raptor pops its head out from a bush to his left. Unprepared and easy prey he subtly says "Clever girl". And that is what Stu was referencing.

Zack Gibbs I think to make things clear for the few people who have never seen Jurassic Park, the Hunter Muldoon used the SPAS-12 when he was hunting the raptors.

It was his weapon of choice and seemingly the standard weapon in Jurassic Park. It's a great movie that any 90s kid has a spot in their heart for and probably watched as a kid. The special effects are fantastic even by today's standards and the biological understanding even back in 1992 when they knew about DNA, gene sequencing and amino acids and how they were coded made a great movie rooted in plausible science.

Jammer (Place this nears spot where you know could find campers to disable the enemy equipment)
Give it a Try! if you play this correctly you can decimate Campers and works very well on small maps like Nuketown or Firing Range.

Vic Robbins so, i just bought it and i suck with it really bad, will i get better? im pretty good with other weapons, my fav is famas or ak47u, and with them i got better over time, but im not sure about spas12

That was a fun mission i sat on top of bottom feeder and set off the heli strafing runs like a guy sitting out of a tank aiming tank shells my main gripe is probably the first part in the macv sog building it was very tough but it was the best spot for the ammo

Black Ops' shotgun balance is weird. You have the SPAS-12, a very easy to use and effective shotgun, but the three other shotguns had insanely quirky and unique advantages.

Sean Ellis The SPAS-12 is far and away the easiest to use due to how big its magazine capacity is, suppressed fire, and its semi-auto fire. The fallback option if you are indecisive. The SPAS-12 is the weakest per trigger pull up close and can't be dual wielded.
The Olympia has the greatest damage per shot within ranges short of ten meters and is semi-auto. However, reloading is a pain.
The Stakeout is accurate and has a good range, with good damage up to about eight meters. However, you're screwed if you hitmark.
The HS-10s are short-range devastators that reload quickly and expend ammo even more quickly. However, your range is pitiful.
well the spas 12 has terrible iron sights ingame to offset how easy it use to use it.
kstanni87 The only shotgun that's worth aiming the sights with is the Stakeout if you ask me. The other shotguns have too slow of a strafe speed, and the SPAS-12's hip-fire cone is a decent enough size, same goes to the Olympia and Stakeout. Aiming the HS-10 is stupid since you're using a solo HS-10.

I played with this loadout on Hazard, a long-range, mainly sniper map, and never performed better in my life. Absolutely amazing.

Just for the fact that you can use a supressor without getting any drawback on a SHOTGUN makes it one of the best shotguns in all CoD Series. You can easily sneak behind a high group of people and kill, without appearing on the radar. Love it. And it has a decent rate of fire, with decent damage and decent mag.

This is my favorite weapon. No drawbacks using a suppressor, large magazine chamber, and the fact that shotguns now cancel out Second Chance makes the spas-12 my favorite weapon. Also it helps that I love to rush.

I use the SPAS without a silencer, I know it doesn't help my gameplay, but I love the loud noise.
No shooter is complete without this gun all the good ones have it, infact before I even unlocked this gun I knew I would love it because it's always so great in every game
Actually, the weapon is Federally legal in America again. It's just banned in specific states, such as commiefornia.
I plan to get one if and when I move out of state. It's a bit over complicated and over priced. But it's still a badass weapon to own.

Considering the stats and it's niche not much else would be as effective, being loud with a weapon possessing such paltry range in a game dominated by longer reaching assault rifles seems ineffective

The quote originates from the scene where Muldoon heads through a jungle towards the power bunker. A velociraptor appears in front of him, and Muldoon aims with his SPAS-12, when another velociraptor sneaks up on him. He realizes this was a trap, and applauds the female raptor with 'clever girl' before getting mauled be the raptor.

An incredibly overlooked equipment in black ops' hay-day and still now, is the Jammer, the Jammer can disable equipment from a large distance, and most people either don't notice or assume they have been CUAV'd, it also jams motion sensors from a much greater range than they can detect someone, as a run n' gunner (and regular shotty user) this ability to make a campers defenses worthless was invaluable in my success in Black ops.

@michaelk123eh It's actually a reference to Jurassic Park, when the hunter was about to shoot a Velocirpator with a SPAS-12, but then another one popped up next to him. The raptor the hunter was aiming at was just a distraction, while the other one would find him and kill him, which prompted him to say "Clever girl" before the raptor killed him.
*sigh* whenever I watch your videos, it really makes me want to the play Black Ops, however when I actualy put in the disk and start playing, I realise why I haven't played it for 3 months.
Can't believe nobody pointed this out but: SPAS is short for SPORTING Purpose Automatic Shotgun. It is a combat shotgun but it was given that name in an attempt to convince the U.S. government that it had a sporting purpose and allow it's importation (this has been a semi-successful).
I used to hate this weapon until you showed us how it's done... Now I love it! In fact... Learning to predict enemies while playing with this weapon helps you play the game better in general!! Definitely worth trying at least a few times until you get the hang of it.

This weapon can be used for speed as well as stealth. It's quick and deadly if used correctly. Lightweight Sleight of Hands and Marathon are very important. In matches where the other team is hiding then yes replace Lightweight with Ghost. You don't need Steady Aim because it's very quick in it's bursts and high mag, plus the more u use it the better ur one shot kills will be.

The SPAS 12 silenced is easily the best gun for Spawn Trapping. When I was using it on Summit the other day, I spotted an enemy Tac. Insertion, and instead of destroying, I just sat there and waited for him to spawn. And when he did, BAM! Shotgun to the balls!
I actually rewatched Jurassic Park because he said "Clever Girl" and I think he said it because if you watch the first scene in the first Jurassic Park movie, the shotgun that the british guy is holding is a Spas-12
I used this with a silencer in demolition (i think or sabotage) and i just defend like a pro. This gun is great to use up close and personal.

Black Ops Spas12 one of the funny easter eggs/bugs is that the devs never fully "deployed" the stock is folded on top of the shotgun >.> talk about a wasted attachment 🤣
Because i was following this series when he did this vid,and I remember him explaining why he sounded like this in one of the bonus vids.
I actually tried the spas-12 silenced, lightweight, steady aim, hacker, with an un-silenced cz pistol as secondary, on headquarters, and while it requires some more thought, it certainly pays off, and is a huge change of pace.

Ever since I've seen this video, I've seen much more people running around with the SPAS-12 with the Suppressor, steady aim, AND they hip fire :o.
you can trade steady aim for slight of hand, it helps alot when there are 2 or more enemies around, in case you run dry after you kill the 2
Been using the SPAS suppressed for months. One tip, steady aim is unnecessary, the spread is the same with our without when firing from the hip.

@girthedog41 The 'hook' thing is an extension meant to round out the stock's body without adding much additional weight. I recall it was present in MW2, but not Black Ops.
The primitive iron sight port for the SPAS is also acts as a catch for the folded stock, it's visible in either configuration, although with the exception of close quarters there's little reason to have the stock folded up during use.
As for the next video, we'll go behind the lines, I presume.

@reganko You can pull the right trigger with the Spas-12 to cancel and fire; two faster ways are doing a quick sprint during a reload, or double-tapping the switch weapon button (Y by default on Xbox)

Just started using the spas 12 today on core demolition with ghost pro, hardened pro and second chance pro. First game I had 44 for 15 :) (xbox 360)
I own the airsoft version of the spas-12 and just like the real one it is quiet and a good stealth weapon. It is also incredibly accurate and affordable.
But it's not the real shotgun so nothing like the Spaz 12 at all. If you ever fired a real shotgun you'll find them to be astronomically loud and NOT stealth weapons.
Props for the Jurassic Park reference; I never realized what gun Muldoon was holding when I watched it as a child.
I love this gun but did not now how to use it right. I would get killed seconds after I got a kill. Now I can use my favorite weapon from MW2 in Black ops. Thanks XboxAhoy.:)
@LcNcKc the reason you use the suppressor it not to be un-detectable(thats a secondary reason) its so that you get a thin and more compact spread of bullets, thus making the gun more potent at mid / long range
@TheHDiizZLe It quotes the scene in Jurassic Park where the hunter is trying to shoot the raptors with a Spaz shot-gun. He gets out flanked by a suprise attack by another member of the raptor pack, and says "Clever Girl" before he is viciously eaten.
more powerful per bullet. Sure you can have a full-auto but there is less bullets and it could be just as good to use pump. The only downside to pump is slow reload. Besides it could be a fun idea to have the select-fire attachtment already on your gun.

this shotgun is amazing , 1 issue : the iron sights OMFG probably the worst i've ever seen i use steady aim (which is a perk i am not a fan of) just because i want to avoid ADSing as much as possible with it

Since he is using the silencer, he is making a stealth class. So Ghost fits that choice.
