I love the fact that he made a good choice in almost everything. He chose Celia over Hilly. He chose to stay away from the house to allow Celia and Minny get to one another. He chose to keep Minny and her family employed. He chose to allow Minny to be seated at their table and eat with them together. He chose Minny as his wife’s companion which in turn allowed Minny to get confident to walk away from Leroy. Celia and Johnny were the best couple in this movie! This movie truly has a special place in my heart! I love both Minny and Aibileen!
I love that Minny yelled for Celia to help her. She and Celia formed such a special bond, and she knew after so many years of being abused by her bosses that Celia would be there for her, not as an employer but as her friend!
Minny knows that Celia can empathize with her abusive experiences from her husband since Celia came from Sugar Ditch, which kinda implies that she herself went through abuse too.
It's so nice to see too, ya know? I mean a truly healthy relationship on TV is rare. Usually it's just a couple that seems happy because their life hasn't had major struggles, or one is deliriously happy and the other is normal happy. Healthy is real.
Mike Vogel is a really good actor as well. I didn't realize he was in The Help, and a few others. His raw emotions in the Netflix series Sex/Life were outstanding! He is very underrated, I believe.
Minny was terrified that Johnny would shoot her in the kitchen if he discovered her because Celia insisted he couldn't know she'd hired a maid, she was calling out for Celia to confirm she was meant to be there 😉 in the book he has an axe in his hand and Minny is terrified, he just happened to have the axe to cut down something in the garden but Minny didn't know that...

Celia and Johnny were the most genuine characters in this story. Celia especially. You just want to hug her and tell her everything was going to be alright.

for context, Celia was an alcoholic and had several miscarriages because of it. when she hired Minny, she hid it from Johnny because it was an embarrassment that she couldn’t cook, and all she wanted to do was treat her husband right. Celia and Minny became fast friends and confidants to each other, which was rare in that era. i know this movie gets a bit white savior-y, but it’s still one of my favorites. i remember seeing it in the theater
I wouldn't call it that. There were white people who actually fought for black people's rights. They were few but they still existed. People aren't a hive mind. There will always be the few that see past all the nonsense.

Celia's body was so stressed by the rejection & isolation that she kept losing the babies, but once she had a bond & friend in Minny, her mind & body became healthier❤
Minnie and Celia was my favourite part of the movie. Their relationship was so special, 2 women struggling with their problems but holding together no matter what

What I loved most about Minnie and Celia was that even though Celia was paying Minnie to come help her, Celia never treated her as a servant like Minnie was beneath her. She treated her as an equal (as she should) as a friend with respect.
This scene twists my heart a bit even though this was meant to be humorous. In the movie Minny’s own husband would hit her. Imagining a white man who might have been angry could’ve done anything he wanted to this poor lady. She was scared for her life when he hopped out the car like that. 😮
This is what I didn’t get about Celia hiding Minnie from Johnny. He doesn’t seem to be a particularly cruel person and when they do meet, he’s really accepting of Minnie’s presence and even is grateful for her help
The book went into a little more detail, Celia was already terrified Johnny would leave her because she couldn't carry a baby full term so she wanted him to believe she could at least keep a house clean and cook by herself. She intended to tell him about Minny once she was pregnant and further along.
What's sad is that one group of people deliberately took brutal actions over many centuries, to strike fear into another group for the sake of power and money. That's the problem. Fear is a natural reaction.

The help was based around the 1960s, and during that time period, doctors would regularly prescribe alcohol to pregnant women to help manage pain.( im not saying a doctor told her to drink but that should tell you how she thought she was safe.) It wasn't until 1981 that through better technology, better training for doctors that it was a very bad thing to drink while pregnant..
The Help is a movie about black women who work as maids for white women in Jackson, Mississippi. Growing tired of how they were treated by the color of their skin, they compiled stories of their experiences, and published a book with the help of a young journalist. Minny was hired by Celia in secret because Celia thought her husband would lose interest in her if she wasn't a good wife. She was bad at cooking, and employed Minny to help her. Celia and her husband have tried having children but each time, she had a miscarriage. And each time she had one, she didnt tell her husband and buried her babies in her garden. She was worried her husband wouldn't love her anymore because of it, but thankfully he understood and still loves her for who she is. Celia is genuine and sweet. I love her character. Minny too. Great movie. I recommend it

The Help was an instructive movie. It really spans the highs and lows of human kindness. Great acting!

Miss celia had three miscarriage she didn't tell her husband as she was scared he might divorce her and she would have no place to go. It was only after Minny started working for her that she had the courage to tell her husband.

For everyone thinking him addressing her as “girl” was cute…. Minnie was a grown, adult woman. “Girl” and “Boy” were terms used regularly during that time by white people when addressing adult black people. It was meant to demean and infantilize them and “keep them in their place.”
Just because this specific character’s intentions were good doesn’t mean he was not using a racist, demeaning slur.

for context, Celia was an alcoholic and had several miscarriages because of it. when she hired Minny, she hid it from Johnny because it was an embarrassment that she couldn’t cook, and all she wanted to do was treat her husband right. Celia and Minny became fast friends and confidants to each other, which was rare in that era.
i know this movie gets a bit white savior-y, but it’s still one of my favorites. i remember seeing it in the theater

I wouldn't call it that. There were white people who actually fought for black people's rights. They were few but they still existed. People aren't a hive mind. There will always be the few that see past all the nonsense.
She thought the alcohol was a medication to make her fertile, but it was actually a scam. That's what I remember from the book.

@chibigirl8545 Celia became depressed and turned to alcohol to cope with the miscarriages and still borns . I can identify with Celia because I long for children for many years but I cannot have them so I'm looking other ways to become a mom. I have 2 fur babies and they help me too

The fact that black women had to constantly refer to whites as “Mr” and “Ms” back then, even when they were much older than them, irks the hell out of me. My ancestors went thru so much
I agree they went through way more than a person should endure that was terrible example and truly that is because at the time they were seen as the employers and your ancestors as the employee which fucked but we still use a hierarchy in our work force such as your boss is often approached with a way more respectful name and attitude than your coworker

I suggest you to read who was the head of slavery business in Africa who sold out black folks and what was going before black people taken to America as slaves. It wasn’t the white people making the selection and business. It’s always game theory.

What I loved most about Minnie and Celia was that even though Celia was paying Minnie to come help her, Celia never treated her as a servant like Minnie was beneath her. She treated her as an equal (as she should) as a friend with respect.
And respected her as a professional who had skills she didn't. Even today, people will treat people in jobs like Minnie's as "lesser."
This scene twists my heart a bit even though this was meant to be humorous. In the movie Minny’s own husband would hit her. Imagining a white man who might have been angry could’ve done anything he wanted to this poor lady. She was scared for her life when he hopped out the car like that. 😮

Honestly, this movie was so underrated. A masterpeice! It should get so much more attention than it does.
This is what I didn’t get about Celia hiding Minnie from Johnny. He doesn’t seem to be a particularly cruel person and when they do meet, he’s really accepting of Minnie’s presence and even is grateful for her help
The book went into a little more detail, Celia was already terrified Johnny would leave her because she couldn't carry a baby full term so she wanted him to believe she could at least keep a house clean and cook by herself. She intended to tell him about Minny once she was pregnant and further along.
I think Celia and Minnie's friendship was one of my fave parts of the movie. And Viola totally deserved the Oscar nom. ❤

@anitagoodman4657 ummmm, it wasn't common knowledge that drinking while pregnant was bad. The help was based around the 1960s, and during that time period, doctors would regularly prescribe alcohol to pregnant women to help manage pain.( im not saying a doctor told her to drink but that should tell you how she thought she was safe.) It wasn't until 1981 that through better technology, better training for doctors that it was a very bad thing to drink while pregnant..
The Help is a movie about black women who work as maids for white women in Jackson, Mississippi. Growing tired of how they were treated by the color of their skin, they compiled stories of their experiences, and published a book with the help of a young journalist. Minny was hired by Celia in secret because Celia thought her husband would lose interest in her if she wasn't a good wife. She was bad at cooking, and employed Minny to help her. Celia and her husband have tried having children but each time, she had a miscarriage. And each time she had one, she didnt tell her husband and buried her babies in her garden. She was worried her husband wouldn't love her anymore because of it, but thankfully he understood and still loves her for who she is. Celia is genuine and sweet. I love her character. Minny too.

“The Help” - A great movie 🌸 I’m sure the book was even better.
Hated the book, all my friends loved it. BUT after seeing all these clips I gotta see the movie, the acting is way past Oscar quality, and everything about it seems like it’s a classic. Thanks to whoever is posting these and all the great comments.
