I have some clamps, wood, bearings, and some flathead screwdrivers that I will fashion into gravers. I’ll just need some of that puddy stuff a heat gun and some sharpening stones

Caleb, I want to thank you so much for this video. I wanted a ball vise five years ago. Couldn’t spend the money. The Vevor vise I got $140 bucks actually came with a GRS 520 accessory kit! So I’m assuming that they may make the GRS vise. So cool. I love all your other videos too. Be blessed

This is great, thank you! Whenever I see elaborately engraved trench art, I always wonder what the artist's setup would have been in the field. I feel like you're not far off with the DIY setup. Some combination of wax, a sandbag, and some surface smooth enough to turn on might have been the solution for many.
I suspect a lot of the time they weren't so worried about a turning surface. you just start scratching and take your time. Maybe use wax to hold your item on a piece of wood and you're good to go
I use a pitch pot. I also put a small lathe vise on the pitch pot. Poor people have poor ways but it works for me. Much rather have a high dollar swivel vise. Maybe someday.
Caleb, what is the difference between the 3" and the 5" ball vise (Other than the obvious), and which one would you recommend for a beginner?

that one is a 12 inch, but you could really use an 18 inch easier I think.

I believe so
instead of sand or rice, it's possible birdseed or fish tank gravel may be cheaper but best cheapest might be to raid the school playground's sandbox haha
Please help...I got a cheap ball vise and it didn't have a rubber base just plastic....and it moves everywhere everytime I hit the material im trying to engrave. How could I fix it...I know I messed up by buying a cheap but I'm on a budget 😔
Cheap fix would be either a rubber mat to sit it on or maybe some sort of silicone caulking for something that would attach to it

Theoreticaly, you can use leather. Take piece of leather and glue it on areas of the base where the ball touches the base. It will, in theory, move when you want and won't move when you don't want because the friction between leather and metal is just right. But I didn't try it. I have cheap chinese 5" ball vise on its way to me. I only did some research. After it arives, I'll try some experiments. Btw thanks for the tip with silicone mat. I'll try it too.
