Good video. For the Lindsey templates and stones, I don't bother to do the heels at all until I get to the 2,000 grit stone. A sheet of glass on the bench makes a good smooth surface for the template. I recommend using water on diamond stones to avoid having them load up with swarf while sharpening. A _fine_ ceramic stone shimmed up to 1/2" thick works well as a final step after the 2,000 stone. A limitation of the Lindsey templates is that the fixture only handles 3/32" square gravers. great tips! I think my first 15 gravers had huge heels because I got overly eager. They still feel too big at times! I'm debating on building a diy powerhone kind of system as I'd like to get more extreme with my relief, but that's a pain.
@@CalebKraftmakes Car window wiper motors (preferrably with a staight axle )are cheap and easy to mount .....they turn slow ( 30 to 60 rpm depending on model , make) and are more than strong enough to do the job. Additionally you will also need a 12 volt power supply (cheap) and an optional potentiometer controller if you want to adjust the speed. If you are good at crafting , you could make a powerhone for less than 150 dollar using 4 or 6 inch diamond lapping disks.(can be found from 80 up to 3000 grit)

Can you use sandpaper instead of bench blocks?
Hey Caleb, is it easier to push engrave or pull engrave by hand (if pull engraving actually exists)? I want to hand engrave something like the Dante's inferno painting into a dining table surface but I'm terrified that I may push too hard and then cut a line into the wood that I didn't mean to and the thought of pulling just "feels" more controllable to me.
Oh yeah and as for hardwood, is Cherry or Maple a good hardwood to use for engraving?

I’ve never seen pull engraving. Though it would be theoretically possible, it would be harder to adjust your angle (vertical) which is very important. For wood carving I’d suggest researching linocut and intaglio on hardwood. Check out Old School Alex and look what tools he uses. Probably a much better fit.

on the finest grit, you should probably do it wet. There are lots of methods out there.

How do those Steve Lindsay templates compensate for stones of different thicknesses?
they don't. You have to just ensure that they're a half inch lower than the stone surface. It's pretty easy.
Does anyone engrave in the house, if so do you contain the shavings or let fall as they may?
If you order the Lindsay templates...you also need to order those stones i presume. Since another stone(thicker or thinner) would completely change the actual angle. Same with the metal holder you started with....there's only one size of thickness of a stone that gives you the angle as you have set it.
you just have to take care to stack things so that you've got the angle right. I used books initially till I got the whole lindsay system.
@@CalebKraftmakes I think whatever diamond stone is used the total height needs to be 1/2 " if you want the correct angle when using the Lindsay templates. If you go Lindsay brand diamond stones as a beginner....the cost goes up way more than is nescesary for a starting engraver . 5 different grit diamond lapping disks 6" size can be had for 10-12 dollar US. A single diamond stone from Lindsay is 45 dollar. The cheap diamond lapping disks work just fine. Sure the Lindsay diamond stones will be a bit higher quality and last a bit longer.....but not 20x ;)

@@Strawdozz You can find them on Alieexpress. Search for "6 inch 150mm inner hole 12.7mm Diamond Coated Flat Lap Wheel".....if you choose single sided (diamond coated at one side) they can be bought for 2.2dollar.....for 5 its 11 dollar. Grit choice from 80 to 3000. Depending on where you live the shippingcost needs to be added to that amount. There are also smaller disks (4 ") and bigger disks. (8" ). I got the 6" . They do the job. You can clean them with water and soap.

I was going to teach myself to engrave for jewelry and soft metals. I am buying engravers for hand push, would this be a good investment to buy this sharpening system for that?
I've not looked into stone setting, so I'm not sure about the geometry for that. I'd go to engraverscafe.com and ask there.

When I took gem stetting in Jewelery school we just used two gravers. An onglette graver at 30 degrees for bright cuts and a round for setting.
Sure, as long as the gravers are 3/32" square stock. That's what the "chuck" is made for. He sells templates for a number of shapes. If you are going to do bead setting/pave work they don't work great for round profiles, IMHO. The round template kind of works, but it's not great. For general decoration and lettering the templates work fine though.
Can lindsey’s system be used on hammer and chisel style of engraving ?
I would think so. The hardest part would be getting the tool into the template properly.
Im using grs point and onglete graver that goes into the same graver holder like for air gravers i just use grs graver handle check it out and let me know what do you think

I know with the Lindsay templates the stones have to be a certain height. Is the same true for the crocker?

that would be impossible! It all has to do with angles and all you have to do is stack things up till everything is the right angle. No specific stones required. The lindsay stones are 1/2 inch tall. You could easily stack something under your template if the stone was too tall. (I've done it!)
@@1crafter2another Yes there is ...you need a system with a straight center collumn.......if you put the graver fixture at the correct angle all you need to do is lift the fixture up at the height of the stone used. The angle does not change since you only move straight upwards . You could also use a graver fixture that you can use upon the stone and move that front to back (google graver sharpening jig for photo's)

The Crocker fixture is flexible wrt angles, so you can set it to work for any height stone. However all your stones of different grits would need to be the same thickness, or you'd need to readjust the angles when changing heights. The Crocker is almost impossible to set repeatedly in my experience, but it kinda works. The GRS Dual Angle fixture is immune to stone height changes. This type is what HoutmeyersP referred to. It's my preferred tool for "traditional" profile gravers though I use the Lindsey for all my 3/32" square gravers.
