I think y'all are misinterpreting things. While Marie worded it like it was because of her Ray got held back, I thought what Frank said made it pretty clear it was because of his slow development. Marie probably said it like that because she didn't want to accept her perfect little Raymond might be behind the other kids, and made up her own story to cope with it.
Would a teacher even allow a kid to be held back a year if it was clear they were ready to move on to the next class? I like to think not. When a child is ready to progress in their education, they are supposed to move on. A parent trying to hold them back for unrelated reasons wouldn't be allowed to do that, surely. Like, even in preschool and kindergarten. That's just gotta be true, because if not, that's super messed up. I really hope it was Frank's reason and not Marie's.
@@Xylarxcode Pre-school isn't required and entering grade school depends on the child's birthday the year starts. Ray was probably on the younger end of when he should've started and there was allowance to let him stay behind to develop a little further. There are a couple studies around kids who are on either end of the birthday cut-off for starting grade school and generally, it's found the older children excel better in school because they're better developed by about a year and it had compounding effects throughout their time in school. Basically they were killing shapes and colors because they studied an extra 9 months vs the younglings around them and that extra boost in self esteem lasted through calculus.
It’s interesting this is one of the few times Robert admits he felt sorry for Raymond. Even though they have an unusual relationship Robert does care about Raymond a lot.
Little Ray gets sabotaged in pre school and people feel sympathy.. she Sabotaged Roberts interview wit the f'ing FBI.. no wonder he felt everybody loves Raymond
I know I've said it before, and I swear it's the last time, but this could honestly have been a great horror series/film, with Marie as the villian: a psychotic, obsessive, insane mother who literally stalks her own children. She would install hidden cameras in Ray and Debra's bedroom. 😮😅😂
Me too. Only it was 8th grade and they weren’t my friend. It was the same situation as the video. It was twin brothers where one could have graduated, but the other couldn’t so they both repeated 8th grade. The one that was eligible was nice enough; I just never really got to know him. The one that had to repeat was in my PE class, and was nothing short of a bully.
My cousin got left back in the second grade she also started then she should have but she graduated college with honors. Some kids needs to be left back for their own good.
My father is a good man but he can be like Frank sometimes. He makes fun of me for my feminine tendencies and sometimes makes insensitive comments. He also can be a little to direct towards other people
Why is everyone on Marie? Frank insulted that little boy many times over. Thats one think I hated from this show. Why any of them allowed that "joke" is beyond me. Yes, marie is a psycho but raymond does allow a lot of it.
Reading the comments here... okay, whilst keeping Ray back to satisfy her bizarre co-dependence on him is very much a Marie Barone move. I don't think that's the case here. Frank mentions that Ray was slowly developing, exhibiting the same traits as Michael. It was a happy coincidence for her that Ray needed to stay back.
I tell you what you don’t do is keep one back for the sake of the other. Imagine clipping an eagle’s wings just to make the pigeon feel better.. insanity
Whatbawful comments..... Marie is nothing of what you folk say...shes the real devoted, caring mother that each of us could be....minus the exaggerations by the director. Which mom laids put a table like that even for her grown up sons...i guess even that is directorial.
“Here’s a man they let have two children.”
Robert and Frank have all the best lines

🤣🤣🤣 I'm at work crying laughing at this lol
I was honestly waiting for Marie to say it comes from Debra's side of the family!! LOL!!

“A boy’s best friend is his mother.”

😳
If Norman Bates mother acted like Marie Barone.. it is no surprise he killed her.

She even sabotaged her own kid to satisfy her own selfish self.
Smother
She does that all the time.

Frank did say he was slow. I don't think Frank would have let Marie keep Ray back if her selfish reason was the only reason.
I didn’t go to pre school but my mother did start me in kindergarten one year late on purpose. I’m not mad about it though
Marie obsession with Ray is creepy. Trying to keep him a little kid just to suit her own ego.
Yup.
That’s the work of a egotistical narcissist. Sounds very scary…
Ray was slow… I think that’s the main reason
I think she wanted Robert to be the one to get married & have children while Ray stayed home
Marie stroking Raymond hair like a little boy. She lost the plot.
I remember you couldn’t even cut paper 😂😂
Im just now noticing all the different patterns their kitchen is lol
That was a rule you had to follow if you wanted to live
One child will always feel overshadowed by a sibling.

Marie really be giving some disturbing vibes towards raymond.

My favorite scene in the whole show was when Robert's mother-in-law called her out on her selfish acts.
The narcissus is such a beautiful yellow flower... (daffodil)
Robert laughing was hilarious
Yes that was gold
Well how many did you have?!
Why do you change the subject
That part always killed me 😂
Seems like Ray knowing his and Roberts ages and the years they graduated HS, maybe he could have figured it out.
I love everybody loves Raymond my favorite TV show ❤❤❤❤❤📺📺📺♥️📺♥️♥️♥️♥️

Holy crap! 😂😂😂😂
So it had never dawned on Ray to ask why he was a year behind in school until this moment? 🙄
Same thought I had. Maybe his birthday is around the cutoff date?
You should not force another kid to be held back. Just because they have a brother or a sister the same age. Not right.
This is only preschool. Not a big deal.

It could piss him off down the road.

what makes this harder is he's a twin, so it's going to leave some complexes.
