      Marie and Frank probably never went out like that to begin with because they were never even in love with each other in the first place. They were just forced into marriage when they conceived Robert by mistake. Legally, they are husband and wife, but in practice, they are just roommates and co-parents.

    What is odd about the television series (and others like it which are considered good) is the collection of contradictions internal to the characters. Marie teaches music and loves opera, learns French sitting alone in her living room and is embarrassed at the presence of her daughter-in-law at one lesson; she does an abstract sculpture, and then behaves so boorishly about cutlery and crockery in a restaurant. It is almost as if the writers forget what we as viewers already know about the characters from earlier episodes when they write later episodes. Could the show runner not remind them? Or is this the muddy thumb print of a studio executive asking for them to be sketched more crudely as boors?

    • @PowerDiva
      @PowerDiva 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      I guess I see all that as Marie just trying to feel superior to those around her. She feels sophisticated listening to opera and learning French and it feeds that complex she has about needing to be better than people like Debra. When she meets people like Debra's parents who far outrank her in the sophistication department, her natural reaction is to balk at it and pretend it's all too much. This is less about her and more about her need to always be at odds with the people she feels threatened by.

    • @robertcolvin4323
      @robertcolvin4323 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Do recall that she is learning French and sculpting during the course of the show. She is trying to better herself which means she’s not there yet. She and Frank have always been cheap people due to their childhoods and we even have an episode where Frank is appalled at Ray’s gift of an aquarium due to the cost.
      It’s easy to believe they’ve never been to a high-end restaurant due to the cost and Marie’s skill in the kitchen.

    • @solitaryman777
      @solitaryman777 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The fish-out-water feel of the episode wouldn't work as well if they clammed up and simply observed, like most people would. The writers are certainly playing up the class distinctions here, mining their discomfort in an exaggerated manner for comedic effort that may be a bit too broad. Lower-class folks have their pride, too, whether its warranted or not.

    • @rachelmartin5187
      @rachelmartin5187 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You're right. They behaved poorly, but when you think about it, it was really a level of class that was the issue. Debra grew up in an upper middle-class family. Her parents were workday travelers. Whereas the Barones were more working class and hardly left the house. It's not surprising that there'd be tension.

      It is disconcerting for a regular guy, but this is the level of service called for by traditional aristocratic attitudes. As a former "dressed up waiter", the server character made some terrible mistakes!
    The ladies should have been given their bread first, starting with Debra (assuming the kitchen door was upstage right, making her position #2 after Robert), but Marie would have also been acceptable.
    A party of 7 with two people arriving early, menus would be placed on the table when the Debra's parents were seated, so as not to make the early guests feel awkward or ill-prepared.
    While being forced to take the extraneous glassware, the server shouldn't have put his fingers inside, but held them by the stem if no tray was available.
    He should never announce specials with items in his hands.
    And when Frank asked about rye bread, the answer should not have included the word "no." We would simply tell him what bread was being served. It's a way to re-establish control while still giving the guest the sense that he's not being denied anything.

      I always felt that this episode was unrealistic. Yes, Frank and Marie were not people who would spend money on a fancy restaurant. But this doesn't mean they wouldn't understand that such places exist and how to behave in one. Marie married in the 1950's and raised her kids in the 60's and 70's. All the major women's magazines (mostly geared toward housewives- Good Housekeeping, Family Circle,. etc) had many articles about formal dining. Marie would have understood why there were so many forks and glasses for one person.
