  • Nearly stole this 24ft car trailer from Copart, it was SO CHEAP! But can a totaled $800 car trailer (that a tree fell on) be fixed? And if so, for how much? Fixing the trailer, plus going over all the fees, parts costs, etc. Wait until you see the finished project! (also, sneak peak of the Porsche 997 Turbo)

    I recommend you get two spare tires and mount them where you can get at them even when the trailer is loaded. Also TPMS sensors. As you have already seen, trailer tires seem to attract sharp objects. If you get a puncture while loaded and underway, the tire will begin to heat up as the pressure goes down, which usually ends with a bang and a lot of collateral damage. TPMS will alert you to dropping pressure, allowing you to pull over and change the tire before the bang part.

    • @matt13ross
      @matt13ross  หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      What do you hook the TPMS up to?

    • @doggerracing5243
      @doggerracing5243 หลายเดือนก่อน +12

      @@matt13ross You'll need a TPMS system. For your application, it will come with four sensors and a display that you will mount somewhere where you can see it (console, a pillar, etc). The sensors are all wireless, but the display needs 12V. You said you planned on keeping the current tires so your best option is the valve cap sensors. I'm not a fan of these due to the ease of theft, so when you end up buying new tires (sooner than you think), get the stem-mounted sensors like you find as OE. My last trailer TPMS system was made by TST and I can recommend them, but there are other brands that are worth checking into if you decide to go for it.

      Not really even though that number sounds a bit off. For someone who isn’t a dealer the total copart fees should have maxed out around $484ish (without tax). He may have had to use a broker depending on the type of listing but that’s usually around $200. (Which would have been $684 with out tax) He may have incurred some late or storage fees or used a more expensive broker regardless even at his number it’s not bad for what you are getting. Keep in mind these are auctions are for dealers only in most states so your paying up for the opportunity to buy way below retail. If you have a dealer or business license the total fees are a lot less expensive because you don’t have that broker fee. The broker isn’t copart, it’s a third party. You’re paying them to essentially use their license. The fee % to winning bid price ratio is just higher for lower price items. It gets better as the item price goes up and caps out after a certain amount. It shouldn’t be shocking you just need to know what you’re getting into beforehand. Sometimes it makes sense to go the repairable route sometimes it doesn’t in this case it totally made sense. If you saw that on market place for $1650 and had the confidence to fix it you probably wouldn’t bat an eye. 🤓

    What you used was an acrylic coating which does flake off after a while and will still leak cause it’s not 100% waterproof like a silicone roof coating.
    As a roofer, you should have used a a fiberglass/polyester fabric along with 100% silicone on the repair areas and seams as this would keep it sealed longer than what you did by a very long time and would probably turn out a lot better.

      020 is the "standard" skin thickness for enclosed trailers. thats why you see brand new trailers with wrinkles all over the walls. When I had mine built I went with 040 because it was 8'6" tall. 2ok miles and wrinkle free. the cost of new is nuts, and even worse is the resale value. IDK how people get what some of these things sell for.

    Suggest using a white sticky wrap on the walls inside. Painting will require at least three coats to get superior coverage. And then there's the over spray and smell unless you use waterbased paint. The wrap will probably be lighter then the paint and won't decrease your gas mileage. Good luck! 😊

    When you straighten the beams up, tap it with a metal hammer to break the metal's "memory", that'll help it from not wanting to spring back into the bent position. High gloss white paint, maybe just a strong linoleum as flooring, a wench at the front, lots of tie-downs on the floor. Since you've got it apart I'd go with all new wiring along with all new LED lighting inside and out (you cannot have too much lighting inside), lastly, a cheap simple level near the front might cost under $10 fasten it to the front hitch area might do one for both front/back as well as side to side) and a disco-ball!
    When you paint the inside, go to Home Depot rent a sprayer, wear a great spraying mask, get a plastic spraying suit and eye protection.

Those dimples and a drop are going to want to come back on you at some point with travel, flex, roof weight.

    I have a feeling the patched seam and hole may leak. That long seam for sure is going to lift and disturb the sealant tape and paint just enough to break the barrier and leak after a few trips and some shaking. Best way to install that patch is to use clecos & cleco pliers to drill holes every inch along the edge of the patch, then use pop rivets to hold it all together, then tape off the seams and use a 2 part sealant to water proof the seam, could use seam tape between the two layers of metal to ensure water tightness and prevent galvanic corrosion, then seal it. That kind of install doesn't lift and can provide structural stiffness. Its how we patch some aircraft skins.

    You should have used rivets to hold on the patch panels. Apply sealant, lay down the patch panel (properly cut with tin snips, i.e. no jagged/curled edges), then drill holes every 4in or so around the perimeter of the patch and rivet them all in place. When you use screws in the middle, you are allowing the leading and trailing edges of the patch to bend upwards. When you drive, turbulence causes each and every section of roof to flex up and down like a drum head. Eventually that vibration up and down along that poorly done seam will cause the tape and coating to delaminate and leak again.
    I'm glad you have a usable trailer for cheap, and I hope that sealant lasts a long time. But there was a much better way to do that. Not to mention the rivets would have been aluminum, causing fewer issues with galvanic corrosion over the years vs. those steel screws. But I think the OEM already made that mistake.
    One other thing to think about with the floor is that it's just wood that's wide open to the environment on the bottom side. If you put down epoxy/vinyl/etc. you are putting a vapor barrier on one side, and it will be harder for moisture to evaporate out of the wooden floor after it gets wet. It's easily replaceable, but you probably don't want to replace rotten floor if you don't have to.

    I set my trailer up with Rhino liner on the floor. 12 k winch mounted in front of a two spare tire carrier at the front of the trailer. White walls and ceiling. I also have cabinets above the winch. On the walls I put hangars for the tie down straps. Before you put it all back together run new lights, the small dome lights are not enough when loading at night. I also put in 110v plugs and lights that are run off a small generator / extension cord.

    Great job. With the POV cam, I would rather see it one time to get the general idea - or wear a head camera so you don't have to worry about moving a camera all over the place. The concern was ensuring an even and level finish with proper brushstrokes. It appeared that it was more of a haphazard application. 😂I'm glad you were able to get such a great deal that will help you in your future endeavors. Tip: Wrap the interior walls with Heavy-duty 3M Vinyl that will be more longlasting. Check out RM Wraps as he uses Architectural Vinyl... I've seen him do yachts so why not a trailer? Another flooring oprion could be Heavy-duty Epoxy made for garages or some type of Polyethylene Composites for Trailers. Check out Crane Composites or Trailer companies that specialize in this area. Don't forget to add security cameras or GPS tracking inside and out and somewhere inconspicuous.
    Hope you find the best solution.

    Nice job nice trailer for the money spent. I have redone reroofs on trailers before and I have my own way of fixing them.
    Not that you didn’t do a nice job this isn’t what I saying because we all have our own ways so mine is just another one. I fix them basically the same way to cover the holes. But I use 1/4” to 3/16”s luan subfloor material for their floor under lay-meant - used under tile or linoleum. Sealed any screw holes and the seams using the same roofing tape you used. Then I use roof membrane but of the construction quality- it is thicker and has twice the warranty the RV manufactured use. You just glue it down making sure to keep any wrinkles or bubbles out before pressing and rolling it on. It can be purchased in a few different colors - also lengths - plus thickness’s. It also comes in complete kit forms including everything needed to install it. I have done at least 10 - 15 RV roofs over the years now now over the previous dozen years with total customers being satisfied including the ones I have done for myself. When you’re done you have a roof that is completely waterproof and very resistant to punctures or tears and so much better than any RV manufactures you can purchase.
    Again my way is only an alternative to the way you did your trailers roof. I have used the roofing paint - sealer that you used but at times if installed to thick between coats only to have it sometimes crack and come off in areas but that was only my experience. Plus if water is left to stand on it in some areas I have had it actually soften back up so keep an eye on it.
    You got a fantastic deal on your trailer the closest that I have found and purchased was my 32 footer car hauler for $1,600 dollars. I replaced its six tires - triple axle - redid its roof - of course washed and cleaned and polished it - reinstalled a new floor with its red exterior and it looks like new. Nice job sir, thanks
    BTW I subscribed to your channel………..Cheers t ya

    I think you did a “good enough” repair on that roof for an $800 trailer. Those enclosed trailer roofs have super thin sheet metal to begin with. Like you said, they’re super wavy. Even if it does leak a little, it’s not the end of the world… I used to have a 7x14 enclosed. Kicking myself for selling it a couple years ago because there have been a few times I have needed it since I sold it 🤦‍♂️. I did e-track on the floors and the walls and that was super handy to tie stuff down. Also built a shelf setup in the V-nose part to store stuff.

  • @91rss

    look for the McGuard etc enclosed wheel nuts from 70-80 1/2 tons and vans, They are the 1/2" that the trailer takes if you are at any upicks. and in the back of Pontiac vibes or Toyota matrixes you can get small D hooks and the bolts, Nuts that fit them are under the tire cover holding the sliding rail on.

    Just for future reference. You can use a bit of gasoline on a rag to get the glue from tape off of the paint. I know, I know!!! But the gasoline will destroy the paint? Negative!!! Gasoline does not detergents and other harmful things that will destroy the clear coat. Think about it, you fill your car up with gasoline and some either shoots out or leaks onto your car. It has never damaged the paint because of the clear coat. It also takes regular spray paint off real fast for those ones that might ever have a vindictive spouse. Works really well and will only leave a slight film that a normal wash will remove.
