Sick Electric Blue Jack Dempsey Fish

  • Electric Blue Jack Dempsey Fish are known to have health issues. I’ve figured out most people have issues arise with heater problems (water temps fluctuating).
    Additional fish tank replies:
Hello everyone I am new to this group and new to aquariums. I started a 10 gallon tank about 3 months ago. I have 4 Cory cats and 4 glo fish. All my test have been very good since the first water change. I am looking for recommendations on fish to help with algae growth.
More water changes and a cloth. No fish needed to do the job of a fish keeper. If you must... Otocinclus. I’m not looking to get out of maintenance on the tank but figured a little buddy to help out in between changes would be nice. I'd suggest snails then. Otos are wild caught and can bring in infections to tanks. Maybe someone more experience with snails can confirm which type would be good for a 10 gal and won't breed out of control.
Sorry If I am ruining your day.
I have a 4ft*2ft*1.5ft tank. I keep orandas in it. I wanted to upgrade the filtration and clean the glass thoroughly. So I moved the fish to my quarantine tanks. They were fine there. I monitored them for a long time, day and night. But today morning I discovered my Red Cap Oranda and Black Oranda floating upside down. The other oranda in the tank was fine. The black oranda and the red cap oranda died after a short while. Those two fish had swim bladder problem from time to time. But they lived. I am really sad. I had them for over a year. The black oranda was deep black, the red had a nice wen. They were cuties. I couldn't even look at them dead. The 100G tank is still sitting there. I cannot make up my mind to build the filtration and get it running again.
I just wanted to post this. I really appreciate all your help you gave me when my fish were struggling with those swim bladder disorders. In the future never remove fish from a tank you are cleaning. In addition you can put your hand into the tank and clean the glass using a sponge during every water change or at least once a month.
My guess is you added them to a small QT tank without enough filtration and the ammonia buildup resulted in their death. Also when upgrading filtration, please add the new filter in the tank, while the old one is running so it can build up the beneficial bacteria or move seeded media from the old filter to the new filter. In this hobby everyone makes mistakes, however it is important to learn from them, so you can avoid repeating them in the future.

I think you’re absolutely right, have a 6 month old jack dempsey that is starting to show signs of sickness; lethargic, twitching, and sitting on the bottom....

I've had one for a little over 2 months. My LFS told me it was the first Electric Blue Jack Dempsey that they could keep alive. I watched them in the store for about 6 weeks before buying the last one they had. It seems to be thriving. It's a very active healthy looking fish. Hopefully 🤞it stays that way!

I’m on my 5th electric blue dempsey, stretching over the last 18 months - the previous 4 have died rather abruptly and for difficult to find reasons, however the 5th one I got imported from the Czech Republic, and immediately I noticed a difference in the fish’s stature - he’s a lot more chunky, and putting on weight well, very active - I’ve had him now 5 months and I’d estimate he’s just shy of 4 inches - he’s living with a 5 inch regular jack, and two 6 inch oscars - plenty of hiding spaces/retreats and a large tank. He’s holding his own very very well, an avid eater and very responsive. The former ebjd’s I’ve had, 2 died at a little over 2 inches, the other around 3, and the final one got to around 4... all of which died suddenly and personality wise I found them very timid, this one however is very bold and confident - my fingers crossed for him. My roots are pleco keeping, which are the predominance of my other tanks, but I wanted a change, and more personality - and since almost giving up with an electric blue only tank, and now trying a mix, I must say so far it’s going well and my fingers are crossed for that 5” Mark where I hope he will be sufficiently large enough to be past the critical stages of development

I have had 13 throughout the last 6 yrs all died between 2 to 6 months. But right now I have one that's absolutely stunning around 3.5 to 4 inches very lively and outgoing in a 125 gallon tank with 2 red spot severums and 4 green severums all between 6 to 8 inches and 3 albino plecos all doing great for 2 and half years now. So that's a 1/13 chance of success not good but still love em.

I reccomend Electric Blue Acaras for people looking this strain of blue on a fish, sure they aren't Jacks but they're less likely to die

Do you still have the dempseys? Maybe it's just something in your water you haven't figured out yet. I have had two electric blue Jack Dempseys for a year now and just bought another one about a month ago. Mine are little pigs and eats everything before the other fish get anything and they dont hide either.

Always facing my 🌿 plant. The other 1 looks good. Really good actually. Swimming with everyone and perfect in color. Guess I'll see lol.

I purchased 2 electric blue Jack Dempseys from the LFS. I shipped in 2 more and are in quarantine with 2 that I shipped in from Aquabid... So, far... They are great. The 2 from the LFS are in a 55gallon tank are skittish... The 2 from Aquabid are much more outgoing. In a week from today, the 2 in quarantine join the others in the 55. I think that I may get some dither fish like Zebra danios. I added some water lettuce to the 55. Let's see...

    • @ethanfallon2576
      @ethanfallon2576 6 ปีที่แล้ว

Your preference. Sand is harder to manage. I would go with gravel. I only go with sand if a species requires because it can be such a hassle for maintenance. if you do get sand I recommend pool filter sand from your local hardware store.

I’m from Australia our import laws have pretty much all American cichlids banned on import, so this is in issue we struggle with a lot quality it is so hard to come by an it’s due to “inbreeding” red Texas here are common but they look like really bad marbeled fenstratos, the with Ebjd their near impossible to keep, people don’t realize how bad inbreeding actually i refuse to keep smaller tropical because none of them last at all the only thing that saves us with american cichlids is that their pretty hardy fish but quality fish is so hard to find

Stick to f0 fish and you wouldn't have these problems like with line bred fish. If you want a good looking fish get some tomacichla asfraci. Please google them. They're stunning. If you managed to breed them you'd have so much bragging rights lol
