JD's habit of singing under the note was a practiced one. His philosophy was you can go up to fix a flat note, but it was harder to go down and fix a sharp one. The part of the video where the lady had the facial expression, I was in the studio when that was being done. Lots of fun memories there.
JD was one of the greatest bass singers of all time. The best overall in my opinion. It's a real treat to be old enough to remember him and watch him on TV. Did you know the ring he wears was given to him by Elvis? Look up that story - it's so cool!
@KajiVocals Dude how rare do you think they are? 1 in 1,000 men? Based on your comments is seems like your minimum requirement for a true bass is a chest E1
I loved JDs voice. He wasn't just low, he could actually sing well. I don't think he could sing as well as George Younce but he was pretty good. Love your reactions!
JD was a good friend I had the opportunity to share the stage with them a few times to three weeks before he died after the group retired Jerry kelso played the piano for us
I was privileged to hang with J.D. a bit back in the late seventies. As much as he was a legendary bass singer, he was an absolute character and a half. Could be temperamental at times, but really was a nice, kind man. A laugh a minute.
JD Sumner‘s low notes are the one good reason I ever listened to old school gospel. You gotta have damn good talent to be recognized as a singer outside of the gospel world and JD definitely earned all the respect he got.

Dan, I've always wanted to ask you, since your use of extended bass singing techniques is honestly mind-blowing: - How to improve my vocal fry (make it sound more "buttery" and less "creaky") ? Any exercises to recommend ? - How do I learn to pitch my vocal fry (down and up) in order to connect it to my chest voice ? I've noticed that the lower my chest voice is (for example in the morning), the better my vocal fry sounds... but it might be the other way around; in which case, how do I keep my voice in general that low during the day ? My preferred techniques to sing really low are subharmonics and chest-fry mix, so you can understand why improving the vocal fry is so important... or maybe it's not as important as I think and I'm missing something 😅
