like your regular use of the word 'simply'. this looks highly skilled to me. I feel like I just watched a Michelin starred chef and thought 'I can do that'. the reality is probably a lot different. awesome. I hope you charge people a lot of money to do this for them.
Glad I found this video. I had an idea of how I'd tackle the nightmare that is the upholstery of a used truck I just purchased. Your video confirmed the steps I needed to take. I will be rewatching this a few times. Quality stuff, minus the music.
Well, I was thinking of doing it myself but this gives me a whole new appreciation for the upholsterer who I am now going to find to do it for me. Thank you and "Wow"--you're great.
I do this every day with plain razor blade. you wedge between string. I weld seat frames, cover foam with half inch foam. sometimes there's chunks missing. I use old car seats foam. put chalk arrow marks after you cut it's puzzle. I've faced hardest puzzles, mystery fasteners factory can throw at me. I peek at bottoms with flash light. I use super glue baking soda on plastics, balling wire junkyard trips to find exact match for side dealers on rips. I spray paint plastic to fabric and vinyl. I never use leather
This was really helpful, thanks for taking the time to do this. I do all my builds start to finish myself except interior...lol now Im finally at the point Im good with doing everything except the seats and ready to give that a try. Thanks again !
In 1988 I upholstered my 1970 Dodge Charger and it was my first time working with vinyl. The result was incredibly close to original! The difference was I made paper patterns from the few pieces of original material that was intact and had to guess on what was ripped to shreds. It needs work again so I guess it's time to revive the old Singer 214 industrial machine. .
If you could make the music quieter than you speak, that way I don't have to keep fiddling with my sound to be able to hear you and not lose the rest of my hearing from the music blaring.
Hey,this turns out really nice. I'm just decided to do upholstery a month ago,I purchased a used W,F. Singer and I been fixing it to make it nice again.
Thanks a lot for the very informative video! I intend to upholster in leather a car racing seat that I use at my home's office and this video will be very useful. When you master the balance between voice and music your videos will be even more enjoying. Thanks again!
first let me say I really enjoy this video I watch it over an over you did a excellent job, I myself is a upholster here in the Caribbean island of Barbados an this was great. keep the good job up,your techniques are verry good
Excellent video John, i now have the confidence to repair my own car seat.. A picture is worth a 1000 words, your video is worth a million.. Thanks.. db

John, Great video. I have a history of sewing but now have MS the last five years so need to find someone to help with my Pick up seats. Live in KCMO USA area and will check out who might do auto upholstering in my area.
Great video. This video show me all the steps i need take to to do a really nice job. I learned a lot from it. Thank you so much for taking your time to make this video.
Very informative video but a little difficult to stay with because of the music. Would enjoy seeing more of your work John particularly on other car interior panels, door cards etc etc,. many thanks !
Looks great the leather needs to be backed in what type of foam? I couldn't hear what you said clearly. Is there any type of specific sewing machine you'd recommend?
absolutely Magnificent!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you so very much for explaining and demonstrating this so that an idiot like me can understand!! You tube needs a lot more fellows like you who don't bullshit and just geterdone and teach.
Thanks man defiantly a little reassuring. I plan on redoing the interior on my 335i I currently have saddle brown leather but the front two seats starting to crack and discolor a bit since I'm doing this I decided to just redo it all in black (the car is white W/ black grills so I think itll look better overall) the down side is its quite a bit more work rear seat and door panel inserts, door arm rest, center consols arm rest plus ill be doing the steering wheel (though using alcantara/ultrasuede) but anything worth doing is gonna be time consuming and probably difficult.
Very nice video. Just a suggestion though........maybe a few close-up detail shots for us old guys that enjoy watching a master at work. Other then that it was well worth watching as I'm planning to recover my seats in the future. John
Hey great video man, but what do you do when your seat has damaged foam? I have a nice Recaro Car seat that I'm itching to redo, but it has damaged foam. Any recomendations?

Thank you that was great I have few questions if you can answer them what would recommend for a neadel size and sewing machine for thick fabric also is there a certain thread type that should be used for this heavy duty seats.
I wore out my volume buttons on my iPad watching this video. Up for the voice, then down when the music kicks in, oh, hes speaking, back up again, loud music again! Back down again. Uggh!
This is amazing I wanna reupholster my car seats to old school American Cadillac/Lincoln style... I love those seats whether they are leather or velour
I bought a brand new (made this month at the factory Sept 2020) luxurious Volvo XC-40 two days ago but although the vehicle is striking people will not suspect that the seats are so uncomfortable to cause me already back pain. I used to drive Mazda and Ford Focus with no back pain, also the French cars but this XC-40 is terrible. I am 6 foot 2 inch tall and the red leather seats are hard but also very narrow making for a hugely uncomfortable ride as driver especially but also as driver. As I cannot change the car I was thinking of getting an upholster professional to put memory foam into the seat, soften it in places and stiffen it at the sides to offer more support. Is this advisable or feasible? Have you done such a job? What would be your recommendations?
Thanks man, this was awesome :) I really want to reupholster my suzuki swift but literally no one sells ready made stuff so I'm going to have to do it myself. Stubbling through youtube videos and I come across yours and it was pretty well brilliant. One suggestion from a viewer point of view, lose the music. +Bruce Riggs Hi bruce sorry to hear about your seats. if you have no experience in upholstery you are going to struggle to make it by yourself. The only advice i can give is to search for 1948 chevy upholstery parts, buy new foam and ready made covers and follow youtube vids on how to fit them. Good luck and thanks for watching. John
Look great, good job and its easy to follow thru the steps Can u tell me which machine r u using, because i uave a singer and im not sure its strong enough for leather
nice work... do you ever have any long term effects from using sharpie markers? example would be, a slow bleed thru of the ink, from the foam up to the surface of the vinyl/leather material? also does the bottom stitching look as good or the same as the top stitching and does the bottom walking foot ever scrap or nick the surface of the material?
Oliver Reiff Hi Oliver I've not had any problems when backing leather or vinyl with foam then marking the underside. But can bleed through if it gets wet e.g. On boats this is where I'd use tailors chalk or a chinograph pencil. As for sewing if the sewing machine is set up properly the stitch should look the same on both sides. I've not had any problems with marking leather as always make sure I have the foot pressure as light as I can this may need to be adjusted for different thickness and or types of fabric. Thanks for watching John
Hey John I have a MK4 Golf GTi and im ok with the main color of the seats but id like to add like an insert color in the middle, would you say its a fairly simple job and would you have any knowledge to share when doing something like this.
Mike at True North Restorations Hi yes it can be done it's a case of taking covers off the seats, removing the fabric you want to change and replacing with what you want, if you do the steps as in this video you should be fine. As long as you can sew or no someone who can on an industrial machine you will be fine. I must point out you will require the proper tools and equipment to do said task other wise it will be a big ask if do not have any experience with sewing. Good luck and thanks for watching.
Noticed we didn't get to see the moments where the actual punch up happened, when trying to fold the recalcitrant new cover back over onto the seat sponge :). Would have preferred the bangy music much quieter, and your voice louder, helpful video though, thanks
Hey John this video is one of the best I've watched. I'm about to reupholster my own set of seats But wonder if you can tell me what depth of scrim foam you've used?
Do you need a special sewing machine or will any domestic machine do? also what type/strength of thread are you using and what string/rope is used in the piping?
+russ redford Hi I think you may struggle with a domestic machine, there just not heavy enough unless its an old cast iron one they will work i use 36 bonded nylon thread and 4mm pipng cord. hope this helps and thanks for watching. John
Nick Person hi it’s called scrim foam it’s a sewable foam. I used 6mm on this but can use thicker say 12mm depends on the look you’re after. Thanks for watching John.
*Nice!* With my current car seat foaming up, I really need to learn these skills. It's next to impossible finding another seat with the correct bolt pattern and same seat track width as well, like serious... how many MK1 Renault Trafic phase 1 do you really see around now? But this is a big help and could possibly be the backbone for my next adventure in order to create dreams on water. Time will show.
great video, im working with someting similar, i have a question if you can please help, when using the old fabric as templates for the new ones, you just used a sharpie arround the piece to have the shape in the new fabric, and also you cutted right on that line, the result of cutting right on the edge of the shape will give you a smaller sit cover at the end, can you tell me with this didnt happened in your video?
Hi there is so many machines that will be adequate to do this work, some are better than others. typically walking foot industrial machines are far better than flatbed machines for this kind of work. that's not to say a home machine cant be used, its a case of trying to sew a small piece of fabric to be used and see if the machine is up to the task. i hope this helps, thanks for watching John.
Thanks for posting and sharing. would you recommend applying glue between the seat foam and the seat cover, or just slip it on? What if there is some contour to the foam (hump, depression..etc) that you want the seat cover to follow, will glue be recommended in that case? Thanks
I've always wanted to know, what type of sewing machine do you need for leather seats like this. Is it a special type or a heavy duty?? Or just a regular sewing machine?
Hey, This is a really informative video and a wonderful finish. As someone previously asked could you pass on what thickness scrim foam you used and the weight of the thread if you don't mind? I'm no professional but I'd like to have a go on our old van.
Zach McBournie Hi Zach better to use auto hide as it’s dyed differently to upholstery leather, there are plenty of suppliers just google it. Generally it’s around 1.2mm thick. Thanks for watching John.
An inspirational video, though I know it isn't as easy as you've made it look, I'm inspired to cover my seats. I'll be using some prefab covers, but this video relieved much anxiety, thanks for posting Cool soundtrack, btw.
Great tutorial 👍question can this be done with a simple sewing machine or do I need a different type. My wife has a sewing machine. Also if it is not doable can it be done by hand? I know it would take much longer but it doesn't matter. Thanks and great video.
Alejandro Cabadas hi I’ve used a home machine in the past it worked ok but would sew the plastics on. It’s a case of trying it out on a small piece of material and see how you get on. Thanks for watching John
Great Job, very cool style and stitching. I assume that your using a sewing machine for leather. Would I ruin my common fabric machine trying something like this?
It's just an industrial machine, if your going to use leather on a domestic place sellotape over the teeth and it should slide through and not burn out your machines motor!
Great video ! I have a question, how thick are the materials ?The leather and the foam (some details on the materials please) - is the leather elastic ? if it is should I put it lenghtwise or oposite ? - from what material is the piping from ?
Fascinating! What do you charge for the labor (if someone had all the material) for front & back seats to a Porsche 928? Also, what machine do you use? Is it dragging foot or walking foot, model etc? Thanks!
+Cheeto Bros no! Threadsize is too small on a home machine and by far not enough power to go through all those layers of leather/fabric/foam. Believe me, I tried and failed!
Help! How would you make a cover with leather, my seats are new with plush fabric that is too light for a car. I have tons of soft dark leather how do you make the pattern and sew for just a seat cover?
I enjoyed the music while watching the video. Very beautiful to watch excellent craftsmanship!!! Thank you Mr. Hunt.

I've always wanted to know, what type of sewing machine do you need for leather seats like this. Is it a special type or a heavy duty?? Or just a regular sewing machine?
Hey,
This is a really informative video and a wonderful finish. As someone previously asked could you pass on what thickness scrim foam you used and the weight of the thread if you don't mind? I'm no professional but I'd like to have a go on our old van.
Ronnie Silcock hi I use 6mm scrim and 30-36 uk size thread hope this helps
John
Thank you John. That's great.
Thanks I just decided to do my upholstery on my car and need all the help I can get .
Great work, what material type did you use?
Was it a pure leather, faux or other type of leatherette? I am new to this.
Gabriel Naser I used real leather on this project thanks for watching John
What type or thickness of leather should I buy? Thanks!
Zach McBournie Hi Zach better to use auto hide as it’s dyed differently to upholstery leather, there are plenty of suppliers just google it.
Generally it’s around 1.2mm thick. Thanks for watching John.
My 2004 4Runner is very uncomfortable and considering getting the front seats reupholstered
Beautiful! When can you come do my Jeep CJ7 seats? I live in sunny southern California!
John Hunt thx good work.
Great Job, very cool style and stitching. I assume that your using a sewing machine for leather. Would I ruin my common fabric machine trying something like this?
It's just an industrial machine, if your going to use leather on a domestic place sellotape over the teeth and it should slide through and not burn out your machines motor!
Sweet, thanks for the tip! Much appreciated.
Awesome video! Very informative and digging the chill music :)
Thank You and thanks for watching John
Great video ! I have a question, how thick are the materials ?The leather and the foam (some details on the materials please) - is the leather elastic ? if it is should I put it lenghtwise or oposite ?
- from what material is the piping from ?
What is the brown material on the other side of the leather....
What material did you use for piping... I would to try this on my old seats thank you for the respond in advance
Would ironing the old pieces give you a better template?
yes on some fabrics it will help
Fascinating! What do you charge for the labor (if someone had all the material) for front & back seats to a Porsche 928? Also, what machine do you use? Is it dragging foot or walking foot, model etc? Thanks!
1shredderx contact me through my website if you want a quote.
I use a brother walking foot industrial sewing machine. Thanks for watching John
Will I be able to do this with a regular home sewing machine?
+Cheeto Bros no! Threadsize is too small on a home machine and by far not enough power to go through all those layers of leather/fabric/foam. Believe me, I tried and failed!
Great work John.
+McElhinney65 Cheers hope it helped thanks for watching.
John
hi where are you in the UK? I would like you to do this same reupholster for my car seats and door cards.. Mark 4 Astra.. How much??
Can you list the materials you used?
You did a beautiful job!
that is amazing made it look so easy how long did 1 seat take you
Help! How would you make a cover with leather, my seats are new with plush fabric that is too light for a car. I have tons of soft dark leather how do you make the pattern and sew for just a seat cover?
Um, watch the video?
Wouldn't you see the diamond pattern first on the material and then cut out your pattern because of the shrinkage from sewing all those lines?
Yes it is better to sew first then cut it out for that very reason.
Looks great: are these leather or viynal trim?
Where are you based ?
These are leather,I’m based in peterborough uk thanks for watching John.
You truly are a craftsman, that is beautiful!
Jim Williams cheers thanks for watching.
