Defending Hulk (2003) Movie - A Review For An Underrated Film

  • Hulk is a 2003 American superhero film based on the fictional Marvel Comics character of the same name directed by Ang Lee which stars Eric Bana as the title character, Jennifer Connelly as Betty Ross, Sam Elliott as General Thaddeus E. "Thunderbolt" Ross, Josh Lucas, and Nick Nolte as Bruce's father.
    The film explores the origins of Bruce Banner, who after a lab accident involving gamma radiation finds himself able to turn into a huge green-skinned monster whenever he is emotionally provoked or stressed, while he is pursued by the United States military and comes into a conflict with his biological father, who has his own dark agenda for his son.
    Development for the film started as far back as 1990. The film was at one point to be directed by Joe Johnston and then Jonathan Hensleigh.
    More scripts had been written by Hensleigh, John Turman, Michael France, Zak Penn (who would go on to write The Incredible Hulk), J. J. Abrams, Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski, Michael Tolkin, and David Hayter before Ang Lee and James Schamus' involvement.
    Hulk was shot mostly in California, primarily in the San Francisco Bay Area.

    From what i heard the green mist was originally going to be blood and ang lee wanted to have hulk crush the dogs but the studio got him to make it green mist so it wouldn’t get a r rating thats why when it shows his mum getting stabbed it was blured out

      This film scared me as a kid, I refused to watch it, and that says a lot cause, the hulk is supposed to be scary, even the 2008 film kinda got that, but now hulk is a joke and we will never get serious comic book films like this anymore, that’s why I’m pumped for Matt Reeves the Batman, cause it’s not connected to anything and can be it’s own thing, and be free to tell its own vision kinda like this film back in2003

    When Eric Bana got PISSED, you felt it. Norton and Ruffalo are a bunch of dorks by comparison. Eric's Banner was stressed out, anxiety high and ready to explode into the green beast. Was the movie perfect? No. But it was by far, the best Hulk film and portrayal to date.

And I am not a Marvel or DC guy that goes out to watch all those movies. I also enjoyed the Edward Norton version but not as much.

    The movie has its merits, but it also has flaws. Things I liked: the comic book style cinematopgraphy, the manerisms of the Hulk (meaning: him smashing stuff (helicopters and tanks etc.) and the big jumping stuff, etc.) all reminded me of the comic TV-series of the 60s to the 80s), the performances by Jennifer Connelly and Eric Bana, etc. The thing I didn't like: the Nick Nolte stuff. Meaning, although he acted his part very well, I didn't like the farfetched bad guy stuff...

    This is also the biggest Hulk's ever gotten as well, specifically the scene where he hides in the dark (forest) and Betty shines her flashlight at him. I believe he was 15'0" by that time. I loved his movie when I first saw it in theaters and will watch it now and then, but overall... very underrated when compared to the other Marvel flicks (specifically MCU).

    I always enjoyed this one. This is my favorite Hulk film, I don't mind the Marvel Hulk but he's a bit of a pussy in those films. I like a slow burn of a Hulk movie and yeah it is but it has cool action with the tanks, I like the mutant dogs fight. To me that's a cool action scene. The fight with his dad is good but a bit confusing because of the ending result of him saying "Take it All" so he was trying to give him his power but it doesn't work. I don't understand that part. It is a different Comic book film and I like it. Love Age Of Ultron but that's it for Marvel really.
    Aang Lee did a amazing job with the story, The action is awesome. I liked it not a huge action every five or ten minutes. It was a bit of a dark story as well which I really like.

    Honestly I have so much Respect fir Ang Lee for at least trying to put his vision on the big screen, i miss older comicbook films like this and Spider-Man, blade and xmen, because each director didn’t have to listen to studio executives, they could just tell there own vision, the mcu is becoming to corporatised and feels more like products being shipped out as fast as possible, the mcu has all these characters but I feel like it’s holding them back from being really great, we’ll never get a film like the dark knight or Spider-Man 2 or even ang Lee’s hulk, when all these films are under the same universe, it hinder creativity, I bet there’s many film directors who would love to make a hulk film and make it true to the character, but sadly they won’t get that chance cause of big studios

    • @millabasset1710
      @millabasset1710 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know that it would never fit, but I always thought this Hulk would have been a better fit in the MCU, since the Hulk already wrapped up his origin story. I like the Edward Norton movie, but there isn't much substance there. If Eric Bana got lucky and was approached by Disney in 2007 and was told "we're doing this MCU thing" I would have liked that more than what we got in Endgame, Hulk taking selfies with kids.
      The 2003 Hulk could have even still got his ass kicked in Infinity War, but could have had a redemption moment like Thor did in Infinity War. I also believe Bana's Bruce could have worked better into controlling the Hulk when it came to working with the Avengers. Bruce in 2012 hasn't unleashed the Hulk since that incident in South America, and when Loki tricks him into transforming, things play out the same way they did in 2012 movie.

    • @millabasset1710
      @millabasset1710 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The 2003 movie is also in a way a part of the MCU, since the 2008 movie acknowledges what happened.

    @30:58 - Funnily enough, Black Widow has never had anything to do with the Hulk (in the comics I mean). She's a crappy 1-dimensional character that has pretty much no interest in anyone or anything other than killing because she's a crappy character. The only other exception is maybe Daredevil and Hawkeye, but that's about it. Betty has more character than Natasha. I hate the Avengers (MCU) a lot, I really do.

Eric Bana was a more interesting take on Banner than Mark Ruffalo and I loved the Hulk moments in the desert !!! So awesome. And I’m sorry- I’ll forever defend Ang Lee’s choice in making the comic book panel style. It made it unique and gave it a specific style and voice. Glad to see you review one of marvel's best& most underrated adaptation!!! I'd put this gem in the same category of Boaz yakin's 1989 film The Punisher!!! I enjoyed the HULK Damn near just as much to be perfectly honest :-) Eric bana was such a more than suitable pick for the role of banner& from the direction to pace,to script to performance,I had no problems with ang lee HULK,it's superior to Edward Norton incredible hulk,one that deserves better reception& a film I'd put over ANY avenger or guardian of the galaxy,Thor just to name a few. Such a comic book,Michael b Jordan fantastic four feel that captured my undivided attention!!! I actually enjoyed antman& wasp as a cool little marvel flick that has a bit more going for it than just a time waster :-) it's not as good as the original but it went at a faster pace since character was already established,it didn't take itself serious one bit while cutting out milodrama& taking you on a adventure while building a decent threat. I'd watch antman and wasp over the second captain America film,the third iron man& others dc or marvel.

I thought the second Hulk film was much better! A sharper, more focused plotline. It wasnt till the second one that Marvel learned how to use the character in the movies.

    The fans focus so match in the Hulk theat they forget that the hulk is a extension of Banner and personification of his pain. This was ironically the most accurate towards history and his abusive childhood as a child by the hands of his father.

    I feel like the MCU ruined the Hulk Hulk used to be my favourite character of all time i liked infinity war and endgame but i hated what they did to hulk he is a fucking joke in this movie i wanted to fucking rage i felt like i was gonna hulk out when I first saw it I was just thinking of Mr Jamison laughing when Peter asks him if he could be paid in advance i dont even concider it the hulk he talks to much i hate the whole idea of proffesor hulk I hate how it looks he looked more like shrek mixed with amadeus cho who i fucking hate buy the way and streve urkel with the stupid fucking glasses I was just thinking he was gonna say what are y'all doing in my swamp the CGI was fucking horrible terrible people think hulk 2003 is bad I like that movie people say they talk to much in that movie yeah about why he is the hulk and the meaning behind it and how bruce banners nightmares are hulks reality it gives him More emotional depth then ever before every time he hulks out it has a direct connection to the hidden memory he suppressed he has these hidden memories of his father killing his mother right in front of his eyes at a very young age and every time he hulks out he is clearly working through an emotional state in his mind the nanobots heal what ever hurts most when you have emotional pain the brain registers it the same way as physical pain so when he has emotional pain his entire body hurts and the nanobots go to fix the problem but they dont just heal it they make it stronger then what it was before so the more pain he has the stronger he gets It was due to all the emotional pain he goes through that made him the hulk the movies about the dangers of suppressed emotional truma and the effect it can have on the people around us Ang Lee's Hulk is a deeply sad, emotionally driven affair It dives head first into themes of trauma repression abuse and what toxic parental roles can do to a person i dont get way people hate the movie their the same people who hate batman and robin for being to goofy and haveing no plot at all and the same people who praised the dark knight for a very in-depth plot and character development and the same people who praised the first two x-men movies and logan endgame and infinity war so many missed opportunity no rematch with thanos no fight with cull obsidian How about Hulk vs Thanos round 2 How about Hulk vs Cull Obsidian How about something Anything The Hulk didn't even fight in the movie he has no healing factor I feel like they have been dumbing down the hulk To add to that Endgame also made The Avengers movie Hulk goofy When Tony, Cap, and Ant-Man went back in time at the end of The Avengers movie Endgame retcons Hulk into talking more and there is the big joke about not taking being able to take the elevator and having to take the stairs and ever since Disney bought marvel they have been stripping away any sort of emotional depth from him completely removing his abusive dad from his past in that deleted scene from Thor ragnorock instead it's ah we where perfect family but I missed my dad die because I was working too much where is his emotional depth the abusive father is what made the hulk the gamma just unleashed him for me I want to see Bruce Banners struggles like the stuff Edward Norton wanted in his movie you know the stuff that was cut like the opening scene where bruce banner attempts to commit suicide in the artics but the hulk wont let him die and the stuff peter david added to the novelisation of the film i think they should have kept all the stuff edward Norton wrote in the script and filmed then the film would have been much better for me the best hulk is eric bana proffesor hulk is the opposet of what stan lee wanted him to be a scary fearful monster i liked how they embraced it in the eric bana movie the whole scary fearful monster thing and even making references to other monster movies like king kong frankenstine even the t rex from jurrasic Park Godzilla and when they thoughtfully turns the Hulk’s characterization into a deeper metaphor for trauma the dramatic back story of bruce banner with his dad killing his mum and the phycological drama stuff make it even scarier so eric bana is my favourite hulk and i like how the eric bana film he is like an unstoppable force of destruction in the mcu besides the first avengers movie he seems very weak and in the super hero squad witch i hated to death and in all the disney xd shows witch i fucking hate to they make the hulk a mentally retarded thing For me the perfect version of the hulk would emotions He's not dumb but rather his brain can be clouded at times He can tap into the intellectual half of himself into Banner but clearly doesn't like doing so preferring to rely largely on instinct on strength and savagery and for introducing the great crossroad storyline and Peter David run David reshaped the inarticulate slab of the Hulk into an action-packed psychological study Bruce Banner and his opposite were fully-realized characters locked in a fascinating tug-of-war that dragged the readers through studies of personality disorders and abuse The history of childhood abuse that Bill Mantlo had introduced for Banner, David made clear and integral. Bruce's father had abused him and his mother eventually killing her planting the hidden-away pocket of rage that would become the Hulk As David wound their way through throwbacks to horror comic origins emotional drama and nuclear allegory the guiding concept was revealed Banner had serious emotional problems and an intense personality disorder and like all of us he had to deal with it and the Greg Pak run mainly planet hulk and world war hulk and the tone to be a very dark horror disaster thriller psychodrama body horror monster found footage cerebral movie feel with fuck loads of jump scares and Mark Millars ultimate hulk with the idea of him being a villainous menace with a homicidal like rage and is shown to be unhinged lewd sadistic violent ruthless and very very cannibalistic you know when He often eats the remains of his opponents and is more of a murderer and the savage hulk from 616 and the Mindless Hulk and the worldbreaker hulk no one should be able to fuck with the hulk even if they kick his ass he comes back for revenge and goes besurker with blood thirst savage gorrila like rage like a loose cannon and i would want it to be an NC-17 rated or in australia r18+ rated with lots of body horror just scary as all fuck like the hulk should be and the idea of what hulk 2 was gonna be before it was canceled it was gonna focus on Bruce Banner's epic struggle with his inner demons, resulting in the emergence of an evil, gray-hued Hulk and It was on gonna be set on a Native American reservation and it was all about radioactivity and it was really political i wanted to see that so badly hulk is a character I reckon should be dark like daredevil punisher and batman and very horror like i want the hulk to be scary as fuck again frightening as fuck not this stupid fucking steve urkul glasses wearing shrek looking motherfucker

    I remember not liking this film much when I last saw it, but then again that was 2 or 3 years ago. I'll have to rewatch it one day. I like how in your videos you don't blindly agree with other people's opinion. Great review. Also, would you say that the way you feel about this is the same about Star Trek TMP since you like both more than their follow ups and they get criticized for similar reasons?

    I don't hate this movie either, but I think The Incredible Hulk from 2008 is so much better. Hulk smashing helicopters and tanks to pieces is still dope as hell, but it just feels like it takes forever to actually get to the action and I never really cared for all the emotional depth Ang Lee tried to force into this movie.

    5:02 To me bro it was done better in Bill Bixby&Lou Ferrigno tv series pilot episode to explain Banner's hidden anger better then what they did in this film but that's just me its cool.

    Honestly didn't mind Ang Lee's Hulk. Think Eric Bana did a good job as Bruce Banner/Hulk, enjoyed Nick Nolte as David Banner as well thought it was an underrated performance from him. I liked Ang Lee's art stuff he put into this but most of all I liked how he built the story of Hulk and showed us the backstory of the character. Sam Elliot as General Ross is good also, as well as his estranged relationship with Betty you get how he's trying to protect her from Bruce especially with his past issues with David Banner. I'd take comic book movies like this over any of the MCU movies of the last few years.

    I mean I like the idea that they were going for the idea of going into the mind of the Hulk and Bruce Banner And giving us an explanation for his anger and his Rage because of repressed childhood memories I mean I would have liked it if the film wasn’t so fucking boring and if they weren’t trying to do this artsy bullshit and that’s what I absolutely hate about the move it just drags on and on and there’s barely any hulk it’s like OK I get it he has repressed childhood memories that’s the reasoning for his anger and turmoil but Jesus Christ I felt like the movie kept ham fisting it and it was stupid I just felt like the movie wasn’t done right I like the idea of the story but for me it just wasn’t handled well.
