@Dallas Meehan Compared to the CGI of Thor Love and Thunder it's a masterpiece, the story was ok the movie took some risk example the panels look like a comic book
To explain vaguely the reason why Hulk's eye pops out when he's trapped and about to be punctured with the needle. Basically, it has to do with the various animal DNA used to experiment on Banner. In this movie it explains his regeneration capabilities much like how some amphibians can do this and even regrow limbs. What you're seeing with his eye is like what some animals can do (can't find or remember the specific animals) which is when they're faced with danger they can make that part of them larger. You see it again in the dog fight as well when Hulk is being bitten in the shoulder. He grows his shoulder until the dog's jaw breaks. Just wanted to mention that because many people think it's a design problem when it's actually a trait of the Hulk in this movie.
@@Cloud-fk1ms Yeah the whole prologue of the movie is basically an exposition of explaining the Hulk and his abilities and to drive the point of the DNA experiments. I guess it's not as memorable seeing as it kinda drags so people just don't remember this little detail. Many people's critique of his design comes down to people thinking the directors were like "hey wouldn't it be funny if we just made him super green and gave him these traits for no reason?"
If I remember correctly rats can actually pop their eyes out of their sockets a bit and make them look larger. It isn't exactly why the Hulk can do that but it has a part in actual nature. Overall I'm pretty sure they use it more of a sign of affection but I think they can use it when they feel endangered? As for body parts, I also vaguely remember that octopi or other similar invertebrates can enlarge and shrink their limbs in a way.
I'm gonna disagree here and say it was simpler than that. he just Grows more the angrier he gets, and that part was growing in front of us, up close, making it look weird. but the culmination of the scene, which is him breaking out of that foam that holds him, only happens because he grows bigger.
It's obvious to some, not so obvious to many I guess. Even the simplest of hulk starting young/small/naive and growing as we do is missed by the mass. All they see is that it's different so it sucks. Stupid poeple...
@@walr1der wrong dude. there was a TV series that spawned multiple movies. From the 80s... that weren't very good.... the one with Thor was.. interesting.
No mate your right. This is still my favourit version of the Hulk by far. You literally felt the grit. Even when he took on the dogs, he fought them like a crazed person would. The way he battered the tank with its own gun. There were allot more emotions in this movie aswell.
This movie was misunderstood hugely. People expected a superhero smasher. They got a psychological metaphorical thriller. The film the plot was so good...its unfortunate that it still gets huge ignorance instead of respect. Another light-hearted hulk film with better CGI was 2008 incredible hulk. MCU Ruffalo hulk is the worst of them all as it is nowhere near the exploration of the psychological depth the hulk character posses.
Mark Ruffalo's version of the Hulk is such a nothing character I cannot even tell ypu what his own unique characterization, goals and motivations are besides sharing the same goals as the rest of the Avenger's which makes him just the "tag along" character.
@@OklahomaBoomer That is exactly the reason why I don't enjoy nor can get into the MCU movies anymore. Everything is treated like a joke. Everytime when an MCU movie tries to be more serious and compelling, the dramatic moment and seriousness is always underscored by some cheap gag, completely squandering the tone and mood of the moment. Like Fat Thor for example. Thor is depressed and in seclusion out of guilt for not killing Thanos to stop the snap, but Endgame decides to turn Thor into a fat, beer guzzling gamer to drown his sorrows away and thats the joke!? Its tone deaf.
@@LordMalice6d9 Sadly they all made that to appeal to new generations especially kids they dont care for the comic readers they care more about the movie watchers of marvel
Danny Elfman's music is unlike any other. Sure, the super hero movies of today have epic scores that fit the tone. But they all lack character. Each song is forgettable and can be swapped without anyone noticing. But Elfman's music in Spiderman and Hulk were memorable. They have character, and can easily be recognized. When you hear those songs, you think "oh yeah. That's totally Hulk."
Hulk was a psychological thriller, that was also a study on the issues surrounding fatherhood, memories & even more so around mental health issues, which just happened to be based around & on the Hulk character. It used some unique, artistic ways to shoot a film as if it was a comic book but not near as good as the way Sin City or Scott Pilgrim achieved that same feat to perfection.I didn’t really like it the 1st time I watched it, but it was a film that’s grew on me more & more with each viewing over the years. I’ve ended up watching it way too many times to count. I think I’ve watched this more times than any other film based on a comic book character, apart from maybe ‘Nolan’s ‘Batman Begins’,which is the best comic based film ever, imo.
Rewatched this movie a few days ago. I gotta say, there was a lot to like, but the music in this movie is just incredible. It's dramatic and it adds layers of drama and suspense to this movie. It's amazing
*2003 HULK is an absolute masterpiece. I loved it in theaters. I love how it delves deep into Bruce's mindset, how it's not just him smashing for 2 hours. It takes its time establishing relationships and characters before SMASHING. 10/10*
@@Dutch_van_der_linde939 *One of the most IDIOTIC comments I've ever seen. Barely focuses on the Hulk? WRONG. The entire movie delves into his character, his relationships, and his mental state. Terrible pacing? WRONG AGAIN. It takes time to build up characters and motivation. Not the movie's fault you have the attention span of a 2 year old.*
Yeah I liked this movie the most out of the Hulk films, it was very unique and deep. Even when I was little I could see that, I guess people just want this though in the hulk films 2:02. I wish more people would give it a chance, but it seems that just a lot of people don't like it. But I guess that's art, not everyone gets it. Also yes I like the animation more than the 2008 hulk animation, in that film it looked identical to the xbox 360 game animation.
Honestly,it should have been balanced better. I like the movie but some scenes drag on and the Hulk should have been a bit more present. This movie was more of an opportunity for Ang Lee to experiment than anything else to him.
@@thelonesurvivor3955 True, but I don't recall saying this film was a perfect film, just that I think it was a very deep film that most people don't get. But yes the film does have problems, like certain cgi scenes, some slow paced moments, and certain transitions, but overall I thought it was very good. I think it's a film that has it's problems, but it's also a film that feels very inspired by the 60s-70s hulk comics as to hulk's character and background. Also like I said, it's art, not everyone sees the same thing in it or likes it the same for the same reasons. But everyone has their own opinions on films and It's perfectly fine to think differently about a movie or art.
Honestly I enjoyed all Hulk adaptations. They each gave something special to the character in their own unique way. 2003 film was also one of my favourites growing up.
I think the shit Hulk 03 gets for the CGI is because, well, it's a giant bright green dude. The following films toned down his color significantly. I think the damn near neon color of him throws people off. I think the texture of Hulk 03 is starting to show it's age, but he mostly still holds up. He's composited into scenes amazingly well. His weight and movement never feels off. He's one hell of a creation. There is more to the believability of a CGI character than just sheer detail of the model. It's how that model is integrated in the footage. It's the Jurassic Park principle. In isolation those original dinos in the first film are indeed showing their age. But the reason JP is always used as a reference point on how good CGI looked back in the day is because of how strategically it was placed and how well the models where rendered with weight and movement. The Hulk in the 08 film just looks like dog turds most of the time. The model REALLY let's him down. He looks like hard rubber or plastic most of the time. There's no give or natural movement to his flesh. He's like a rock hard clay man or something - like of you gave Stretch Armstrong veins and left in the sun to dry out. I think the Hulk in the first Avengers takes the overall win for best overall design and CGI though. While Hulk 03 takes the EASY WIN for best film.
@@ethancoolbro18gamer86 Yeah '08 Hulk was the best imo.First Avengers Hulk was too ape'ish.'03 Hulk, although let down by the CGI, was the most beastly of the bunch.
And Edward Norton was such a poonanny when he said "you're not gonna like me when I'm angry." Lol Eric Bana was more convincing. 08 wow I thought it was older than that too judging by the steamy pile it was haha. I don't think the 08 had Jennifer Connelly either, deal breaker lol.
2003 movie is still running on my mind to this day, which is why I'm here watching your video. The story, the characters, the acting, the message was so powerful. The moment he screamed take it all it's still running on my head. The bgm behind this is astounding
The reason the CGI looks better in Ang Lee's Hulk is several fold- 2003 Hulk had a LOT of money spent pioneering simulations for just about every single conceivable level of believability. Everything from the Hulk's body-fat content to his musculature, to his vascular system, and tendons, all that jazz. I remember as a kid obsessing over the special features and being blown away with all the work that went into that movie. They made sure that they captured the light, and kept it natural using multiple reference photos- including a capture of the set at the time of shooting using a reflective ball- they also had a ball painted to match the Hulk's skin and gave it the same level of reflectivity so that they could match it to the photos that day. Ang Lee also said that he wanted all the rage to be under the surface, like someone is trying to fight it. When they started doing Mocap, everyone wanted to go over the top and exaggerate the movements. And he kept pulling it back and making it more and more subtle. Credit to the 2008 Hulk though, much of the CGI budget was gobbled up by reshoots and late stage reworks. Marvel and Norton clashed on what the finale should look like and how everyone would look as an end product. Overall, all that clash and indecision meant that less time and money was spent on the CGI for that film. The fan favorite Avengers Hulk has the most robust CGI of the three, but I agree doesn't look as believable despite being more grounded than the others. And I think that's because the lighting doesn't feel as real. Hollywood's cinematography over the last 10 years or so has just become a series of insecure copycats mimicking eachother out of fear of critique and it's pathetic.
I’m so happy to see someone who loves and appreciates this movie, it gets so much unwanted ridicule from some internet critics that it disappoints me greatly. I absolutely loved this film as a kid, I loved how deep it got with its characters and the drama in the film was excellent. Also the CGI in my opinion still kinda holds up in places, Industrial Light & Magic really did a great job at bringing The Hulk to life. Also the scene that I still find beautiful and heartbreaking was when they kill Bruce’s father with a missile and Bruce while still underwater has the only one good memory of his dad, when he hugged his dad and he wished him good night. It personally hits me hard in the feels.
I love Ang Lee's Hulk 2003 movie its phenomenal, and the acting is so good, the scene that really stands out to me is when Betty Ross(Jennifer Connelly) is in her car for safety from the Gamma Dogs, and Hulk is trying to fight them off and at one point the gamma pudole dog is trying to bite through her windshield and you can see how afraid she is, that acting was so good. Also I remember rewatching the movie and getting to that scene 11:50 and getting closer to the screen because of how dark it was and not really be being able to see anything and being like "I can't see anything".
You should've played Doom 3 before they changed it so you can use both flashlight AND gun at the same time, before it was one or the other, then you would have known why it is the origin of one of the primordial memes, the "can't see shit captain!", also you'd be able to watch that scene effortlessly, for example, i've watched Alien vs Predator: Requiem and managed to see almost everything in the movie just because i've had played Doom 3 years prior rofl, when people started complaining about the darkness issue in the movie I was like "I don't get it, it looks fine to me", but back to the topic, 2003's Hulk will always excel for me, it is a tragic story and I knew that even tho I was 11 years old when it released, guess I knew what I was getting into thanks to watching The Incredible Hulk tv series from 1978 while growing up(still love The Lonely Man by Joe Harnell to this day), the only superhero movies that I respect as much as this one is Watchmen(another polarizing movie among the public) and Logan, I don't know, more grounded and character-driven superhero movies always enchant me, not to say that I didn't like Sam Raimi's first 2 Spider-Man movies, X-Men, X2, BvS Director's Cut or Justice League Snyder's Cut, because I liked all of these, but 2003's Hulk, Watchmen and Logan hold a special place in my heart.
Seeing this banner transform into a hulk sounding like a human transforming into a werewolf, the angrier he gets the stronger he gets, throwing around tanks and smashing them, and now we have the hulk that does yoga and is a comedic relief, i bet the people who were harsh on this hulk sure do miss it now. I miss when the hulk was actually scary, a force to be reckoned with.
I’m glad to see more and more people showing appreciation for this movie, when I was young this film connected with me for some reason, you said it in your video but I think quite a bit of it flew over my head but something about it just latched onto my brain, but I just couldn’t explain why, now, it’s grown to become one of my favourite superhero movies, especially because Hulk is one of my all time favourites, from a young age as well, like the movie, I didn’t know why I liked the character, I just connected to it subconsciously and grew to understand and love the nuances later in life. Sorry to get all pretentious on ya like that
This couldn't be more spot on. I feel like you just described my entire childhood. It shouldn't come as a surprise given my username (that I came up with as like a 12 year old) that Hulk was and honestly still is my favorite marvel character. I found myself going on a nostalgia trip watching all of these newer videos about the old Ang Lee Hulk film.
The only movie where Stan Lee appeared twice.. At the university talking to Big Lou, and in San Francisco, at the window of the house the soldiers were on the rooftop... By the way Bruce overloaded his dad with power equivalent to 70 exatons of tnt, making him a moon buster, but he's 'a million times more powerful, more radiant' which makes him a large planet buster.. His size in the movie is no coincidence because world breaker Hulk is around 12 feet tall.. This Hulk is too OP
Think about it. Without this movie, we wouldn't have Into the Spider-Verse. Its style paved the way for comic-themed storytelling. Granted, it's very messy, but that's only because the execution wasn't there yet.
@@peterrealar2.067 - you imply that A) it was a success (it wasn't) B) so much so that it inspired spider-verse (it didn't) Comic books themselves inspired spider-verse not this movie. Your entire premise is faulty. By your logic, the game "comix zone" inspired the Hulk movie.
Most of us around this were around the ages of 7-12. I feel Spider-Man and subsequent hero movies appealed to us because they were campy light hearted and fun. But for this movie being 2+ hours we couldn’t really focus and space. Action is what kept us invested re watching it these days and you realize it’s a sad movie about Bruce’s child hood Even at that age I knew Jennifer Connelly was beautiful
Eric Bana's depiction of hulks rage is the best, especially when compared to Mark who kinda just shouts. Eric shakes and his veins pope like the rage is too much for his body
Hulk had an awesome score. Love the opening credits to this day. The movie was way more emotional than it had any business being...but that's Ang Lee. He's a fantastic director.
ill admit the further we get from comic book movies like this the more i appreciate them, i mean sure its long and kinda boring and the hulk looks like play dough in a lot of shots, but its so refreshing to watch a super hero movie that doesn't have the comic book movie formula we've been getting for the last 10 years. the days of getting a weird art house style drama about the Hulk are long gone.
honestly the theme music of this movie is still one of my absolute favourites. I think it captures the concept of the hulk perfectly. Also the effects when his Dad get's his power and fuses with an object still looks and sounds amazing and also still love this final battle. Yes this movie has flaws but I certainly would not call it terrible
Thank you so much for doing this video. I am from Sri Lanka and I first saw Ang Lee’s Hulk on a VCD when I was 6. I made sure to watch it at least once a day and visitors at my house had to go through the pleasantry of watching it whenever they came to my place. It was probably the only movie that I fully watched so many times instead of only resorting to the action scenes. It spoke to me in a singularly unique manner and it changed my life ever since. The aesthetic Lee created was etched in me from the first watch. What a ride! What memories ❤
It’s so refreshing to see people have such a positive outlook on this absolute classic GEM of a Hulk movie, it was one of the first movies I ever remember watching and it’s still a special one to me now as an adult, I always wanted to see this take of Hulk expanded on and continued into another movie, it’s a shame The Incredible Hulk acted as a soft reboot and sidelined this take. I know for the sake of consistency with the MCU they would’ve had to have made some sacrifices, like Hulk not growing physically when he got angrier, wouldn’t work well in an Avengers movie so I get that, but still, I’d love to see another standalone Hulk movie again. It’s been too long since we’ve had full focus on him.
I don’t know if I’m going blind, but the way light bounces off Hulks’ skin looks great. It looks like he’s actually there. Not always, but sometimes the CGI just baffles me.
Agree completely about Danny Elfman’s score. Legit stuck in my head since first watching the film. However I don’t think 03 Hulk looks more realistic or “better” than 08 Hulk. Ang Lee’s film feels more tangible, like the hulk is actually physically DOING what he’s doing (throwing tanks, running, etc) While Edward Norton has a more realistic looking hulk with muscles and veins, striations, the movement is much more cartooney
watching this as a kid religiously, every time i hear that sound track to this day I just get goosebumps and flashbacks of all the suspenseful dramatic scenes of the movie wash over me. It really stuck with me over the years and sticks out more than anything I've heard before, its a hero movie but with the soundtrack of a horror, it's serious, as it should be its the hulk. So help me god i could be in the middle of my first borns birth if I heard that music I'm stopping what I'm doing and thinking about that movie.
The cat meme with the Danny Elfman theme killed me 😂 Also yeah surprises me how good the CGI is still here and there. Lol as a kid, I was on the verge of tears everytime when seeing Bruce as a baby looking at his mom, Hulk is literally one of the most tragic characters in Marvel
@Alexander Meek Tbf the film didn't bomb and while most critics liked it, it just wasn't a straight up success like spider man was the previous year. As far as the fx goes, they're top Notch. The hulks never looked more convincing on the big screen than he has in this film which is hardly a surprise since ILM handled the CGI
Loved this movie. I also agree that the music slapped and the cgi was AMAZING for 2003. The only thing I didn’t like was how saturated the green was and that absorbing man was his father BUT it worked
I’m glad you made this video. I tell my friends the same thing about this movie, from the special effects to that kick ass theme, it truly has aged as a fine piece of superhero media.
The Hulk creature is better directed. Ang Lee shows how it feels to be the Hulk, he put a lot of effort on the physics of the Hulk and it has Hulk in the desert against the military, that's the most marvel comic book style, straight from the Hulk comics.
I've owned the dvd for years, still do. Way back then I was too young to understand the deeper meaning of the story but I still seen it countless times.
@Alexander Meek, I am a long time Hulk fan, from the mid 1970s. I like Ang Lee's Hulk, and in my opinion this version is far better than the "Ragnarock" Hulk, the "Infinity War" Hulk, and the "Endgame" Hulk. "Why?" Great question. Here is my answer. Ang Lee demonstrated the two immutable Hulk laws very well: * "Hulk is the strongest one there is!", and * "The madder Hulk gets the stronger Hulk gets!" Ang Lee also demonstrated the following Hulk abilities: * his quick healing factor, * his great invulnerability, * his ability to easily defeat the US Military, * his "never quit, never surrender" attitude, * his ability to jump vast distances in a single bound, * his super speed, and * his psychological/emotional issues. Ang Lee also did an excellent job demonstrating that Bruce's father: * is/was quite abusive, and * murdered Bruce's mother. The MCU utterly failed to establish all of the above Hulk mythos. In fact, the MCU has utterly destroyed the Hulk's mythos. Currently, She Hulk is continuing the unwanted destructive process. Note, the Edward Norton Hulk, and the "Anengers" Hulk depicted the above Hulk mythos very well. Note, the "Age of Ultron" Hulk was a transition Hulk (i.e., from the real Hulk, to the soft, weak, and irrelevant Hulk).
As someone who’s also seen Ang Lee’s Hulk, and watched the Incredible Hulk twice, I liked both movies and would gladly rewatch them both again, but something about Ang Lee’s Hulk makes me actually enjoy it more then Incredible Hulk. Believe it or not. You and I aren’t so different. You could say.
No, it doesn't look better the newest films, No, the 2008 hulk looks better but... I gotta admit the VFX are really good for 2003, it was good enough to sell the character, I think it boiled more to design decision and limitation of each era. My favorite Hulk is definitely without a doubt the Ang Lee's version, the idea of him growing the angrier he gets is very enticing and really conveys visually something else.
I 100% AGREE that This WAS the BEST HULK to Date. They show BRUCE as a person and his struggles, and the same for Hulk. This was a Beautiful video Brother good edits and lovely clips to include ! 💪
You know. This review inspired me to watch the movie again, this time with an adult brain. Holy fucking shit, for a First film, THIS should have been ground zero for the MCU, not Iron-Man because Eric Bana as Bruce Krenzler (Banner) was very solid in the role.
The cgi for the hulk is by far my most favorite because of how simple and unnaturally green he looks. He was blasted with a ton of gamma radiation and it kind of makes sense that the Hulks green skin wouldn’t organically blend in with his original pigmentation like with the other hulks.
It's a fantastic movie. I love the chemistry between Eric Bana and Jennifer Connely, the deep dive in Banner's dark past and psychological state, Sam Elliot's general Ross is not just a douchebag, what he does, he does because he feels is the right thing to do and is able to compromise. It's a dark movie, a beautiful movie, the tragedy of a cursed man, which is exactly what an Hulk movie should be. But I guess people are not interrested in that. All they want is "HULK SMASH" "ANGRY ANGRY" and jokes every two seconds.
I’m so happy this movie is getting more recognition as a genuinely good film. I feel it’s been unfairly maligned because it’s not an action film like the modern Marvel formula; it’s a psychological drama that touches on some of the more complex aspects of Hulk/Banner’s psyche much like the original ‘70s tv show did.
I LOVED this movie as a kid, it was one of my favourite movies, Spider-Man 2 being first, can't wait to rewatch this after so many years. The few things I remember was that the soundtrack was perfect and so was the casting, the Hulk CGI STILL TO THIS DAY looks insane for a 2003 movie. I get why people hate the "greeniness" of Hulk and the goofy editing with transitions but that's honestly what makes the movie special, it truly feels like a comic book in a movie form...
I still remember going to see this with my dad. There was maybe 3 other people there. I will admit at first it started out pretty slow. So much I even doubted if we were in the right film. But once the Hulk finally shows up I was left completely floored! Me and my dad absolutely loved it! Now I admire the slow buildup. Similar to Jurassic Park how it develops the story then delivers the good stuff
Agree on the cgi. I NEVER understand when people mention the cgi as a negative. This movie is way ahead of its time. The shots of the hulk when he's covered in dirt are genuinely amazing still. I think it's because of how over saturated he is, thats the main reason people view it negatively. It's the only explanation for me. Otherwise, it really confuses me whenever somebody bags on the cg here. Its genuinely really good for its age. Full cg character in 2003.
I honestly like the way Hulk 03 did a amazing job showcasing the hulk abilities, if you pay close attention you can see the Hulk getting bigger the more angry he becomes
because of how dark this version of hulk is, i like to imagine he eventually became maestro and could cross over to the mcu same way tobey and andrew's spidey crossed over
I love this video so much. I had the same experience with this movie as a child. I bought that exact hulk puzzle and stickers and I would write stories. Also I burst out laughing at the part about the music with the cat bobbing it's head. The theme has always stuck in my head, Danny Elfman perfectly captured the anguish in Bruce Banners heart of being cursed as the Hulk. Fantastic video. You deserve more subscribers. I subscribed. Keep it up!
I agree with you SOOOO SOOOO much. I really feel like this movie did so bad and other marvel movies did so well because they dumbed other movies down and made them more light hearted and less dark and took away moral and intellectual challenges that (2003) HULK did so well.
I felt like this Hulk and Banner captured the anger of The Hulk more than any other. Especially that scene when he explains how it feels, and that he likes it. The encounter with the military tanks is unforgettable. I can't remember a thing from The Incredible Hulk. But I remember this movie.
The movie is definitely really underrated, the only real downsides is that it's really long with pacing that is really slow, the sets can also seem really cheap at times almost looking like something you would see in a porn video. Also some of the stuff this movie goes into like the affects of child abuse/ childhood trauma, murder, and of course how to deal with your anger, it can make this movie feel extremely depressing with how seriously these things are taken by the movie and just how much of it Bruce has gone through personally but that's how hulk should be written because his story is inherently sad and that process of him struggling to learn how to cope with his trauma, depression and anger while also still trying to keep those around him/ the people he loves safe and do the right is what makes him such a relatable and interesting character because everyone has delt with these issues at least to some degree at some point in there life (at least in his early story arcs anyways before he joins the avengers). But yeah it's really underrated, as long as you can handle the depressing story, the slow pacing and the some what cheap looking sets I'd definitely give it a recommendation to watch especially if you're a fan of early hulk stories before he fully embraces the hulk and joins the avengers.
I re-watched it today and enjoyed it very much! Very well written, acting was spot on . Eric Bana, Jennifer connelly, Nick Nolte all did a tremendous job.
Just finished watching it, I concur the acting performances are unparalleled. Eric Bana was born for the role as Bruce Banner. Ngl at some parts There was so much green I got flashbacks of the Xbox original I had as a child 😂. But other than that I think Bana’s hulk was the best and we should’ve had more of it rather than the 2008 one.
I absolutely agree the Hulk CGI from 2003 looks 100x better than current day Hulk. Everytime people say it looks bad I’m jus like “🤨”… when Hulk has the mud on him, that’s one of the most realistic Hulk shots. Having your cgi character interact with the environment and touching “real” practical things certainly gives off the illusion he’s real. The MCU Hulk it’s too detailed, almost as detailed as everything around him. The MCU hulk looks good, but there’s always something off about it
I think Hulk (2003) gets a lot of criticism bc of it's CGI, but like in their defense, it was 2003. I re-watched it as an adult and the story blew my mind. As a child, you simply don't comprehend it well enough to enjoy the movie for what it is. There are ofc the HULK SMASH scenes, which every media including Hulk probably includes, but they spent time establishing characters and an overall plot before the first transformation scene. Of all of the films that have used Hulk, this one is the only one I think really reaches the same depth as the Hulk comics.
My family members all hated this movie. I was 7 or 8 years old when we went to it in theaters. I remember absolutely loving it. I got it on DvD for Christmas (from my grandparents cause there’s no way my parents would have gotten it for me.) the first time we watched it they were all roasting the shit out of it. I remember getting so angry. I think that most of the complaints lobbed at it are understandable for sure but I do think it’s great in its own way.

This is one of the best hulk movies, especially because of the transformations that are fantastic and the story of how it unfolds
💯
"One of the best" There are only 2 movies, so it's the best one
@@walr1der wrong dude. there was a TV series that spawned multiple movies. From the 80s... that weren't very good.... the one with Thor was.. interesting.
@Kyler Markle clearly you don't know the hulk
@@walr1der Don't say stupid things.
No mate your right. This is still my favourit version of the Hulk by far. You literally felt the grit. Even when he took on the dogs, he fought them like a crazed person would. The way he battered the tank with its own gun. There were allot more emotions in this movie aswell.
I loved all the practical effects to ground the CGI...think that's what makes the difference most of the time.
I think one director tried to make his character deeper, but the MCU can’t handle something not being the butt of a joke.
@@LordMalice6d9 fr they where good untill endgame after that they have been down hill even there tv shows now are crap
I listen to the music from the opening credits at the gym. It's awesome.
I wish the movie would have dealt with all those issues you listed
It might have been a decent movie
Rewatched this movie a few days ago. I gotta say, there was a lot to like, but the music in this movie is just incredible. It's dramatic and it adds layers of drama and suspense to this movie. It's amazing
*2003 HULK is an absolute masterpiece. I loved it in theaters. I love how it delves deep into Bruce's mindset, how it's not just him smashing for 2 hours. It takes its time establishing relationships and characters before SMASHING. 10/10*
Let’s Gooo!!!
@Shreyash More 1/10🗑*
It barely focuses on the hulk, terrible pacing, editing sucks, and hulk looks like shrek on steroids
@@bufflatino5121 and most of the movie was people just monotously talking, barely any action scenes when it’s a movie about a green raging monster
💯
Don't say stupid things.
Hulk 2008 has the best design tho
"So you think Ang Lees Hulk is GREAT?"
I do..and Im tired of pretending its NOT.
YES
I loved how this Hulk really shows how Hulk's size increases with his anger!
Honestly I enjoyed all Hulk adaptations. They each gave something special to the character in their own unique way. 2003 film was also one of my favourites growing up.
The theme music for this hulk is the most hulk thing we’ve ever gotten. It’s beautiful yet horrific. Heroic yet insidious.
Think you nailed it!!
L take on 2008 Hulk
You 🧠n't? Don't say stupid things.
The reason the CGI looks better in Ang Lee's Hulk is several fold-
2003 Hulk had a LOT of money spent pioneering simulations for just about every single conceivable level of believability.
They showed almost every ability Hulk had in this movie from the comics
Right I love that they did that man
Seeing this banner transform into a hulk sounding like a human transforming into a werewolf, the angrier he gets the stronger he gets, throwing around tanks and smashing them, and now we have the hulk that does yoga and is a comedic relief, i bet the people who were harsh on this hulk sure do miss it now.
Not really
@@guyverjay1289 What do you mean not really? The whole style of the comic panels aesthetic came from this dang movie.
@@peterrealar2.067 - you imply that
A) it was a success (it wasn't)
B) so much so that it inspired spider-verse (it didn't)
Comic books themselves inspired spider-verse not this movie. Your entire premise is faulty. By your logic, the game "comix zone" inspired the Hulk movie.
@@guyverjay1289 Idiot, inspirations don't have to come from successful movies. Shut up. Your stupid logic is a minority.
Most of us around this were around the ages of 7-12. I feel Spider-Man and subsequent hero movies appealed to us because they were campy light hearted and fun. But for this movie being 2+ hours we couldn’t really focus and space. Action is what kept us invested re watching it these days and you realize it’s a sad movie about Bruce’s child hood
Even at that age I knew Jennifer Connelly was beautiful
Absolutely HAVE TO watch this again, now. And also want to know how Hulk III ends! :D
Eric Bana's depiction of hulks rage is the best, especially when compared to Mark who kinda just shouts. Eric shakes and his veins pope like the rage is too much for his body
we need this hulk to vs tobey spiderman
Yes this movie has flaws but I certainly would not call it terrible
way underrated movie ! This Hulk got bigger when he got more angry. I thought that was awesome.
I am obsessed with this HULK to this day.
I think this version of the hulk does the best as far as showing anger you really felt he was pissed. Love that.
More sinewy doesn't equal more realistic. Norton hulk never looked like it was part of the environment.
watching this as a kid religiously, every time i hear that sound track to this day I just get goosebumps and flashbacks of all the suspenseful dramatic scenes of the movie wash over me.
Totally agree on the CGI looking better than The Incredible Hulk.
I didn't think this was a very good hulk until I saw she hulk now I think its a masterpiece.
😂😂😂
@Alexander Meek Tbf the film didn't bomb and while most critics liked it, it just wasn't a straight up success like spider man was the previous year. As far as the fx goes, they're top Notch. The hulks never looked more convincing on the big screen than he has in this film which is hardly a surprise since ILM handled the CGI
yes it is masterpice we need this hulk vs 2002 spiderman
I would love to see a 2003 Ang Lee's HULK vs Hugh Jackman's Wolverine movie🔥
I think the CGI looks better than future hulk movies. He really blends really well into the world in most scenes.
I agree on everything you said, I also think the cgi looks way too good for 2003
Loved this movie. I also agree that the music slapped and the cgi was AMAZING for 2003. The only thing I didn’t like was how saturated the green was and that absorbing man was his father BUT it worked
Brother, you mentioned the soundtrack and all I heard was Danny elfman, and you’ve got me hooked already
This movie hit me so hard after rewatching it 20 years later. Nick Nolte’s performance alone is god tier.
I’m glad you made this video. I tell my friends the same thing about this movie, from the special effects to that kick ass theme, it truly has aged as a fine piece of superhero media.
A lot of people hate this movie but I like it
The Hulk creature is better directed.
Ang Lee demonstrated the two immutable Hulk laws very well:
* "Hulk is the strongest one there is!", and
* "The madder Hulk gets the stronger Hulk gets!"
Ang Lee also demonstrated the following Hulk abilities:
* his quick healing factor,
* his great invulnerability,
* his ability to easily defeat the US Military,
* his "never quit, never surrender" attitude,
* his ability to jump vast distances in a single bound,
* his super speed, and
* his psychological/emotional issues.
Ang Lee also did an excellent job demonstrating that Bruce's father:
* is/was quite abusive, and
* murdered Bruce's mother.
Finally someone who appreciate this film
I thought this hulk movie was so ahead of its time. Especially how it formulated from the tv series itself as well as the hulk comics themselves.
You could say.
we need this hulk to vs tobey Spiderman
That "Take it all" scene is the most comic book Hulk version we've ever seen on the screen.
I had a fucked up childhood so whenever they showed the scenes with his father and mother it gave me cold sweats at night , i loved this movie so much
I 100% AGREE that This WAS the BEST HULK to Date.
He said "fighted" I died and came back to life😂😂
The cgi for the hulk is by far my most favorite because of how simple and unnaturally green he looks. He was blasted with a ton of gamma radiation and it kind of makes sense that the Hulks green skin wouldn’t organically blend in with his original pigmentation like with the other hulks.
I swear I always felt like the end to this movie and the beginning of The Incredible Hulk were connected lol
10:26 anyone else going to talk about how that cat synced up with that music? Or was that just me!😅
I honestly like the way Hulk 03 did a amazing job showcasing the hulk abilities, if you pay close attention you can see the Hulk getting bigger the more angry he becomes
The best thing about seeing this film in the cinema was seeing the trailers. Then the end credits. Then driving home and slumping on the couch
😂😂😂😂
Me and my brother were massive hulk fans we absolutely loved this movie
The animation was neat, pretty much.
Hulks movement was life like.
They should bring him back in one of the Multivers related movies.
The Shang Chi joke was gold it’s awesome that Simu Liu shot stock photos
because of how dark this version of hulk is, i like to imagine he eventually became maestro and could cross over to the mcu same way tobey and andrew's spidey crossed over
I love this video so much.
I recently bought this and the incredible hulk 2008 in a bundle because I love both of them
Hulk was NUTS that was the most hulk hulk ive ever seen and really goes into the psychology of bruce
If you didn't get the Hulk Smash Gauntlets as a kid, you weren't even a kid. 🌟
The spinning on "GOOOOOO!!!!!!" Had me dying man. Fuck.
😂😂😂😂
the headbanger cat on Danny Elfman's music was so funny !!!
When I look back on this movie I realized this is one of the coolest and most faithful adaptations of the hulk character
The scene where Hulk shares a moment with Betty when she was in the tree was the very first time a full CGI character convincingly conveyed humanity.
Got my sub man! Great video 💯
This movie used to give me nightmares. Now I have a irrational, albeit weak, fear of really big hands
I re-watched it today and enjoyed it very much!
Very well written, acting was spot on . Eric Bana, Jennifer connelly, Nick Nolte all did a tremendous job.
I would love to see The Hulk III: The Hulk Returns.
3:33 holy SHIT that unlocked a memory long forgotten!!!
Growing up I never heard the film being bad in kids group but adults hated it very much, I have both movies
😂😂😂 the Xbox part
I absolutely agree the Hulk CGI from 2003 looks 100x better than current day Hulk. Everytime people say it looks bad I’m jus like “🤨”… when Hulk has the mud on him, that’s one of the most realistic Hulk shots. Having your cgi character interact with the environment and touching “real” practical things certainly gives off the illusion he’s real. The MCU Hulk it’s too detailed, almost as detailed as everything around him. The MCU hulk looks good, but there’s always something off about it
honestly thought u were a 10k sub youtuber, good content
Wow thank you very much for that!! Hoping to put out great content moving forward!
Now that the mcu ruined the hulk maybe people will appreciate ang lee’s hulk now.
About damn time people love the score to this movie
The escape/desert rampage scenes are still some of my fav movies scenes ever!
