Hell yeah, they should have definitely went full on X-Files. Imagine - a CIA or FBI operative from a laughed at department investigates an alien abduction case, finds out the truth about the danger that is closing in on the planet and struggles to put together a defense initiative that will eventually become XCOM. And he only has a pistol. And there are few aliens in the game, most of them disguised as human. That would have been awesome!
In two lines, before I even read the rest of it, you sold me. Take that shit, write it down and patent it, then try to sell it. This has potential. I wonder if that's even a thing, patenting very specific aspects of a fiction story. If it is, do it. Because it sounds great. And please no god awful zombies
His style of reviewing was so unique, after watching his reviews you'd get a very in depth understanding of every aspect of the game. We miss you Total biscuit, rest in peace.
Looked at steam, 75 % sale, jumped into it blindly, ... I regret nothing, its a good game that I enjoy, but yes, this game is more brothers in arms with aliens and lasers then Xcom
I’am a long time fan of both xcom and brothers in arms, I really enjoyed this game while it wasn’t exactly X-com this style could work for spin offs every now and then, sorta want a game like this but set during X-com 2.
To be fair, TB could not know it at this point but there is indeed an explanation for the sudden psychic powers. And the way the game pushes them in without explaining them is top-tier sneaky storytelling.
The game is okay. Not excellent, not great. Just Okay. Not bad enough to be considered poor, Not great enough to be considered a good game. People will find it fun. But of course the game was overhyped.
The AI moves on its own when flanked if you haven't told it to specificly go to a position. There's two quick commands, regroup (follow, via F2) and cover (both of you act on your own but use this cover, F1). I'm unsure if those two locks the AI down, the follow command doesn't but the cover one I don't use as much. But for this type of game I'd rather micro manage, the combat on higher difficulties is fun because you really struggle despite hitting your own shots well, contrast to ME1-3.
I agree. An investigation mechanism would be really fun -- interrogating people about sightings, and bringing people in when they're suspected of poisoning or alien mind-control. Imagine interrogating someone who had been brainwashed or mind-controlled by aliens, in a dark room with a single light. It would open the game up for some awesome, eerie atmosphere. I also agree that it shouldn't have thrown you into a full-scale invasion so quickly. It would have more impact around the 3rd act.
I wonder how many people never realised that you can use the brace for a melee attack. They don't tell you this very well so you're only likely to find out by accident.
This game would have been immeasureably better as a 3rd person shooter version of Xcom Enemy Unknown where you follow the story from the perspective of the soldier who tests positive for Psi ability. Including the awesome environmental destruction from Unknown. But the game they made was so half-assed it was painful. And I completely disagree with the Full Spectrum Warrior crap. Bullets don't care what side they are on when entering the body, and a lung that is being punctured by a bullet doesn't care that it is being punctured from the front or the back. The whole flanking thing has never really made a lot of sense to me, especially as it is used in Full Spectrum Warrior. It just feels to video gamey and artificial. Gameplay should match our natural expectations of how things actually work.
I see it all the time in ports to the pc. You got a great looking game, untill the cutscenes start and you see sometimes a very poorly encoded movie. Or having the console graphics :( In the past often the cut scenes where the pretty ones.
i have a controller plugged into the usb port on the pc and the game registers both simultaniously so you can switch between the two different controlles instantly at your choosing without pausing or reloading the game.
Got through the game only using bullet-using guns without me or anyone dying with only 2 or 3 close calls. ._. Also, your powers are explained towards the end of the game.
You know, it wasn't the greatest game in the world, but it was decent enough. The 60s style is great, the story ended up pretty good I thought. I might not recommend it to everyone I know, but it was a hell of a lot better than those xcom sequels they released in the 90s.. I mean dayum.. This was just a bit consoley.. which.. you know.. makes sense.
26:40 TB is missing the fact that they've tried to include the element of flanking into this game. Your squad is lethal when they manage to flank. If the %damage you make is above 100 you can probably just disregard that target with any other squaddie.
so the agents thing where you send them out to do "stuff" and they come back with a reward and a litttle leveled up is just like the thing they had in assassin's creed brotherhood. ...right? is that a good comparison?
Hah yeah same. Guess some of us have the same (hopefully) sensible plan. Check for sale, check TB, check a review (maybe) and make decision. Can tell who works for their money :)
In that case with the sniper - he was flanking the enemy for 300% damage bonus! They were probably expecting you to use the flanking and exposed bonuses to boost your flunkies.
I know that Enemy Unknown isn't an hd remake. I meant an hd remake of the original. I don't what's on PS+ so maybe you could get that. And there is a (close enough) remake of the original, it's called Xenonauts.
To be fair about the powers TB I remember reading about the contents of the briefcase at the very start being the source of the more exotic abilities. If I also recall correctly it may even be in the class description for Carter.
In tactical mode, hold F to scan. It will show you items of interest. If you target an outsider, it will tell you powers, weaknesses etc... For how you get those powers, you find out later in the story.
Having played it, I would say it does give information on how the later abilities work if one visits the labs between missions and sees what they are experimenting with. However I find I tend to progress a lot faster than that and opened the abilities before the labs started experimenting.
Enemy Unknown started development back in 2008. The Burea's first incarnation was revealed back in 2010. What really happened was that there were two pitches for the XCOM IP, and were developed concurrently. This just got a bigger push because during that time, turned-based strategy was still dead, and everyone was still busily aping Modern Warfare.
Xcom was never a first person shooter. It was derived from Laser Squad originally released on the Amiga in the early 1990's? It was always a 3rd person turn based strategy. Where was the research before this game was reviewed?
The fps version of Declassified was just simply called X-Com, and the enemies were the little slime balls, already forgot what they were called, but this was back in 2011.
It's not easy to find much about this game released in 2012 will all the versions being called Xcom something or rather, but apologies there was an FPS version of Xcom. you're right and I eat humble pie.
Just found out do they explain it further later on. i.e. As they said in the beginning, you get your powers from whatever was in that case. You find out exactly what that was later as the story develops.
Ahhh another generic third person shooter, clearly the world was in need of another one~! and as an added bonus it's a half assed mass effect without the lore, depth or fleshed out cast! please take my wallet! they clearly deserve it for all the non effort put into their generic mass effect-ish knock off of a RTS genre series Now i know some devils advocate will cry "but it's dumb fun, turn off your brain" to you i say "no" being a brainless tool that moves along with the herd is not an appealing quality, if my brain is not being actively entertained then why the fuck would i bother playing video games?
so u wanted another xcom: enemy unknown with a repaint? it might've an interesting comparison if it were in a fps, since you would be in the midst of what you were looking at with enemy unknown.
I don't know yet if they explain exactly what it was but it was explained that the device in the case you were carrying vaporized the alien agent and also gave you the ability to heal and start developing those powers.
TB, I've watched a lot of your stuff for a while now, but recent events have compelled me to finally get a youtube account. The reason, to call your attention to one fact: SOPA is back. Considering that the last time that this bill came up your video on the subject was one of the most informative resources going, I thought I might let you know.
18:10 you really have to bring up the command menu and assign them targets, use combos via perks. It is supposed to be a RTS type shooter. I bring up the menu quite often and they seem to do very well. I've seen so many reviewers never bring up the menu, hardly ever see combos as a result. The game demands you to play it in that fashion. Think RTS micromanage, combos and they perform. If you leave them idle and unattended they will strike out alone.
Honstly you should start with (possebly the options) but the gameplay, because getting down to the nitty and gritty of the upgradesystem and so on. Becasue it does not matter if the upgrade system is good if the gameplay sucks. You should turn that around
As far as I know this game was announced way before anything about XCOM: Enemy Unknown from Firaxis was known. They just took a lot of time to develop the game and in the meantime Firaxis (noticing all the publicity that XCOM still could generate) made Enemy Unknown and it became a hit.
I think they could have added a pre-emptive strike mechanic allow the player to coordinate the first strike on a group to easily kill of aliens quickly with the basic weaponry but after the effect wares of they gain like a strengthened combat skin making them a tougher opponent when using bullet type weapons, this making tougher and more strategic action worth while
I want to say it's all tech; in the lab area they test various prototypes as you progress. One of them is a person-sized ring that lifts a researcher when activated. One of the people working on the devices says something along the lines of "We need to make sure the theory is sound, then we can work on the miniaturization."
Another thing that might have been fun would have been more use out of the sleepwalker virus. Having sleepwalker enemie3s would have been good but I also thought it would be cool to have a chance for your back up agents become infected. This would mean you would have to juggle the risks of ranking up your agents against the repeated chances of infection from multiple uses. and once an agent is infected they may randomly turn on you in mission or simply wander off like the sleepwalkers do
What i tryd to say with my initial comment to yours is, that not every game is just about Gameplay as a primary focus. Some try to be more like a Movie, some offer a different specific "focus", even if thats only the story, only the world they create. A game isnt just gameplay, some do not play a game to have a challenge , others need a game to be exactly that, difficult, challenging and fresh gameplay thats not just what they allready know.
I honestly think its a great game and outside of the field you can explore the base but not Being able to level agents over lvl 5 is a diapointment and while there is a weapon that shreds a muton in 3 seconds it still uses a lot of ammo and you dont find it if you dont search for it i dont think its worth paying the whole thing but there was a humle bundle recently that offerd it for Low price with bioshock 1 and 2 if you didint pick it up there you probably shouldent if its not on 80+% sale on steam
I really recommend reading polygon's article "The many faces of The Bureau: XCOM Declassified". A fascinating insight on the extremely troubled development of this particular title. Almost to the point of being a rather tragic development tale.

I almost finished in the game and your teammates do very little. They are better used as distractions and for their abilities. On veteran difficulty, the situation can spiral out of control so quickly that risking a flank hardly feels worth it.
So many people have commented on or complained about how getting the powers makes no sense to them. Has everyone forgotten that you were effected by the artifact in the intro to the game? Maybe your mere exposure and experience with the aliens after the initial exposure to the artifact is causing your abilities to evolve and come about just as your healing powers came about from your initial exposure.
I know that very well, but to me it sounded like TB was talking about the difficulties the dev team might have faced when they werefirst going to make an FPS and then changed into making a TPS.
Forget laser and plasma! We need turtleneck based weaponry!
Hell yeah, they should have definitely went full on X-Files. They were meant to be first impressions videos. He purposely avoided them being considered reviews.
@@Grandmastergav86 but it was best first impressions I have ever seen. He was probably one of if not they best at what he did .
Can be bought for $1 with Bioshock 1 and Darkness 2 in the newest Humble Bundle.

Thank you TB for all your work, you left a void that will never be filled, RIP TB

If I'm not wrong, later in this game you can capture and deploy alien mech as ability, I have seen in trailer, any confirmation?

***** ikr? and thats not exaggeration, thats the point of cutscenes.
i have a controller plugged into the usb port on the pc and the game registers both simultaniously so you can switch between the two different controlles instantly at your choosing without pausing or reloading the game.
I haven't even played it yet, but this review made me sad for buying it.
Does it run better if you disable the SLI?
Got through the game only using bullet-using guns without me or anyone dying with only 2 or 3 close calls.
._.
Also, your powers are explained towards the end of the game.
Did anyone else notice that the 2 AIs were set to "Following Commander"?
Might that be why your 2 allies keep breaking cover to FOLLOW you?
You know, it wasn't the greatest game in the world, but it was decent enough. The 60s style is great, the story ended up pretty good I thought. I might not recommend it to everyone I know, but it was a hell of a lot better than those xcom sequels they released in the 90s.. I mean dayum..

They should add a degradable cover mechanic to the game.
Were the team member names in this generated by the game because I have the exact same name as one of them
Still watching these videos today.
so the agents thing where you send them out to do "stuff" and they come back with a reward and a litttle leveled up is just like the thing they had in assassin's creed brotherhood. ...right? is that a good comparison?
hmm 75% discount on Steam this weekend. refresh myself watching this video.. nope. still not gonna buy i guess.
yeah, was thinking of buying it. but i didn't remember this wtf turned out THAT bad^^
Hah yeah same. Guess some of us have the same (hopefully) sensible plan. Check for sale, check TB, check a review (maybe) and make decision. Can tell who works for their money :)
TB your timing is perfect xD
i was looking for videos about this game
"More X-files, less Independent Day."
Fucking nailed it right there.
In that case with the sniper - he was flanking the enemy for 300% damage bonus! They were probably expecting you to use the flanking and exposed bonuses to boost your flunkies.
Wow full spectrum warrior, that brings back some good memories.
Indeed, I forgot I had Full Spectrum Warrior till he mentioned it. :P.
Funny, the ad I got before this was the trailer for this game.
Booker DeWitt, alien killing badass.
I know that Enemy Unknown isn't an hd remake. I meant an hd remake of the original. I don't what's on PS+ so maybe you could get that. And there is a (close enough) remake of the original, it's called Xenonauts.
Can you just switch DX9 on and off in the menu or do you have to tweak config files?
if only the main character was Archer, would definitely improve the game
To be fair about the powers TB I remember reading about the contents of the briefcase at the very start being the source of the more exotic abilities. If I also recall correctly it may even be in the class description for Carter.
Rip man. Man can't belive it still...
Welcome back TB! I hope ya had a good vacation! :P
I had fun with it...and thats all.
hey total which one is better, declassified or Enemy unknown?
I just hate the fact that the first proper DLC for this game is just for the xbox which is bullshit
In tactical mode, hold F to scan. It will show you items of interest. If you target an outsider, it will tell you powers, weaknesses etc... For how you get those powers, you find out later in the story.
I miss TotalBiscuit...
I know I don't ever look at 1 review, but its nice to watch these videos to see what it is about etc..
Well i am sad now
same. TB was an awesome man. we shall never forget him

Cmon, 720p isn't THAT bad.

Yeah. It is pretty much a bird's eye view, nothing close to a fps.
This might be an old comment, but it's annoying me so yeah. He never said X-COM was an FPS. He said the original version of THIS ONE was an FPS
So what do you call the original version of this then MB? because there have been so many version of XCom that we could be talking at cross purposes.

There wasn't any Triple Buffering in the options menu.
so u wanted another xcom: enemy unknown with a repaint? it might've an interesting comparison if it were in a fps, since you would be in the midst of what you were looking at with enemy unknown.
Any chance for some final fantasy 14 coverage? I had a blast during beta. Would love to hear your exhaustive first impressions tb.
I don't know yet if they explain exactly what it was but it was explained that the device in the case you were carrying vaporized the alien agent and also gave you the ability to heal and start developing those powers.
I noticed I could pick up this title on cheap from Steam today, thought I'd check it out on youtube first, glad I did, saved me a couple of €...
TB, I've watched a lot of your stuff for a while now, but recent events have compelled me to finally get a youtube account. The reason, to call your attention to one fact:
SOPA is back.
Considering that the last time that this bill came up your video on the subject was one of the most informative resources going, I thought I might let you know.
I just said there where two xcom enemy unknowns. What i meant by remake is like a hd version of the older one or something.
18:10 you really have to bring up the command menu and assign them targets, use combos via perks. It is supposed to be a RTS type shooter. I bring up the menu quite often and they seem to do very well. I've seen so many reviewers never bring up the menu, hardly ever see combos as a result. Wait... the dialogue options in Mass Effect do nothing? Did I miss something TB said?
Is there any co-op or multiplayer?
Can your other agents use powers as well?
Honstly you should start with (possebly the options) but the gameplay, because getting down to the nitty and gritty of the upgradesystem and so on. Becasue it does not matter if the upgrade system is good if the gameplay sucks. You should turn that around
As far as I know this game was announced way before anything about XCOM: Enemy Unknown from Firaxis was known. They just took a lot of time to develop the game and in the meantime Firaxis (noticing all the publicity that XCOM still could generate) made Enemy Unknown and it became a hit.

Dear TotalBiscuit, the reason you got the frame rate drop because of the screen recording program that slow the game down, perphaps?
How did you not name a squad member Archer?
need a dispatch misson mod for enemy unknown, because if one of my majors or colens die, then im really screwed
I want to say it's all tech; in the lab area they test various prototypes as you progress. One of them is a person-sized ring that lifts a researcher when activated. One of the people working on the devices says something along the lines of "We need to make sure the theory is sound, then we can work on the miniaturization."
Is it possible to play without the 2 ai being with you? Like, can you just go solo in the mission by maybe sending the everyone else on side missions?
It's a very large plot twist quite near the end and it has all these choices wrapped around it. Personally, I think it's a clever idea
Where you get it at that price?
The original X-Com, UFO Defense/Enemy Unknown, was made by Mythos/Microprose back in 1994. XCom: Enemy Unknown was made by Firaxis/2K in 2012.
That's Hanlon's, Heinlein's had the ",but don't rule out malice." attached to the end of it.
Hey TB? Are you taking one for the team?
Still crazy that even after he's gone he's helping me decide on if I want a game
It's on xbox for 5 bucks atm
Another thing that might have been fun would have been more use out of the sleepwalker virus. Having sleepwalker enemie3s would have been good but I also thought it would be cool to have a chance for your back up agents become infected. This would mean you would have to juggle the risks of ranking up your agents against the repeated chances of infection from multiple uses. and once an agent is infected they may randomly turn on you in mission or simply wander off like the sleepwalkers do
It's fun enough to warrant a single playthrough on "Commander" difficulty.
What i tryd to say with my initial comment to yours is, that not every game is just about Gameplay as a primary focus. The reduced cost for preordering, Spec Ops: The Line + the XCOM Collection preorder rewards made it a pretty good deal for $44.
If you read about the development history of this game, it is amazing it even managed to get released. Also, I´m pretty sure its development started before Firaxis' game.
Despite its flaw a bit of renovation and xcom can do really well in this style
At 26:22 the sniper had a flank bonus on the enemy so that is why he went down so quickly. It works a lot like X:EU in that way. But in general I agree with TB... I almost finished in the game and your teammates do very little. They are better used as distractions and for their abilities. On veteran difficulty, the situation can spiral out of control so quickly that risking a flank hardly feels worth it.
Oh god, he made Crendor and Cox as fellow operatives! Best friends, together forever. From now until the end of time.

Can't remember, it was a long time ago.. I also remember that he said he'd like to improve on that in that video.
did you consider maybe he didnt get review code for blacklist?
I actually like the options in 7:14. Not sure if this game is a buy at full price though.
