Effeect, I have to agree with you, too many games try and copy popular franchises. This could have easily tried to be a Russian version of Fallout but I have to say what I have seen so far has impressed me, I need to play a good game again soon and this is on order and arriving in three weeks! So here's hoping I enjoy this as much as I did Fallout and TLOU
Popularity, in my opinion, is bad. Popularity brings corporate demand to game studios and can ruin the awe and wonder of this game and it's story. It's because they have remained "un-popular" that they were able to fulfil a promising and faithful game series generated from the original beautiful novel. And thankfully we had the honor of the games being co-written by the author who wrote, said, books. I feel if it were up to corporate, they would have forced the author to write their own narrative or even boot him out entirely and hire someone else and possibly whore out the series. Look at Fallout 76. Classic example of corporate interference and the lust for money.
the voice acting isn't that bad... it's quite pretty good I might say... you should listen to the english voice acting they used in stalker call of pripyat...
Damn! I miss you biscuit 😩 Just started doing a full play through and thought I would watch some reviews. Of course you popped up. Best PC critic hands down. We lost a gaming industry giant and a good person 😥
Now this isn't confirmed at least I don't know if it's confirmed but the filters will only been used when they're needed they don't go down if you are in a non-contaminated area.
I found a spot like in 2033 with the shadow of people who died there and I looked at what seemed to be a guy being hung from the neck and I just peered my head in just a little bit and saw what would be perfect in a paranormal activity movie. shadows of people covered the room I mean the entire room was perfectly lit with my flashlight and i could see a small child like shadow thing right in front of me. I was like "Fuck it! I'm not going in there!"
One additional benefit most people have no clue about is that the flame of the lighter points towards the same direction as the compass marker. Basically it negates the need of you having to pull out the whole notebook in a situation of danger. :)
To be fair, I think we're lucky we got anything from 4A Studios considering the conditions they developed the game in. They had to bring in construction generators just so they'd have power to get the game out when it was released. One of the developers was evicted from his house by a bunch of guys with assault rifles. It's a rough place. Also, you can kill those 'spider' type enemies without shooting them at all, as long as you keep the light on them.
One of my finest memories of 2033 was when I heard my revolver go click while fighting off howlers on the surface, and then having to fight them tooth and nail with my trench knife.
I prefer this linearity over cheap wannabe open worlds, its like Half-Life 2. Linear, but exploration, maybe Last Light could have a little more as you said, but its fine imo.
The scripted events doesnt bother me a bit, playing this game, and playing 2033, you will be very happy that you're stuck with a companion.. the library section in 2033, that was some intense shit! The story is very good, the voice acting is pretty shabby at times, but didnt really bother me much.. Wait for the redux edition and buy it, it's an amazing game!
Haha oops. I coughed up five bucks for ranger mode, and decided it would be a great idea to do my first playthrough on it. Yeah, not a good idea at all.
The English voice acting is not that great? I thought the English voice acting was very solid and didn't take away from the experience, characters like Pavel I thought where voiced extremely well. Sure there were some characters not done as well (for example: Anna and some of the children characters), but once again it in no way took away from the experience.
I agree with him on the wanting to explore more of the metro, because in the loading screen it shows all the different stations on the map of the metro, and I want to explore it as much as possible.
10 year anniversary of the game and I just picked it up for free. Saw the review link on Steam, and had to watch this review. You, sir, are badly missed.
By the way, Metro: Last Light did a hidden morality system, that way the ending more so reflects your actual choices [these being the scripted big decisions] and game play decisions (IE: Kill all the enemies, avoid them, knock them out vs actually killing them). Depending on how you play and the type of choices you make you might either get the standard ending or the alternate ending [both amazing]. This adds back to their immersion factors as it doesn't do the pick the color morality systems.
You can save that girl at the end if you act fast enough...this acts as an example of how this game's morality works. No one blames you for not having done so or anything, it just tests you as a human in little ways. Would let a woman get violated or help her out? Nothing huge that changes the outcome of the whole Metro or such.
I don't know if this has been pointed out before, but just a heads up; in the latest patch they introduced a line in the user.cfg file "r_base_fov X" which you can use to change the default FOV. X being a number of corse. A slider woulda been nice, but personally I'll take what I can get.
Idk if you figured it out eventually because I stopped watching, but your gas mask filters do not run out unless you are in an environment in which you need one on, this is the same as the first one.
One thing that really stood out for me (in a bad way) was the mute protagonist. It is allowable to some extent in other games but just really didn't fit into this one.
How to enable "Ranger Mode" 1: Dark Room, headphones. 2: Put Sticky note over important bits of the UI. 3. Only pick once every 5 times you find it. xD
I have just started playing the Metro games starting with 2033 "Redux" and I will continue on with Last Light. So this video will definitely help me understand if Last light is worth my time or not. Rest in Peace TB, You may have left this cruel world, but you will never be forgotten o7
Totalbiscuit, died in his battle with cancer. Man, I gotta say I really love watching his old WTF videos, they really give me comfort. The gaming community really lost someone special.
They just gave the complete edition of this game away on steam for free today TB. really wish you were here to see the positive side of the industry having competition now, on the other hand wish you were still here to TEAR into the egregious business models. RIP - forever missed LEGEND
I say put developers into that tough position. It might cull the herd a bit and get rid of developers who aren't in the business to make good games for the sake of making good games. I grew up coding in the 90's, when the great epic companies like ID Software and Apogee were the big games in town. Back when people got into making games because they gave a damn about what people thought, and to push the limits of what gaming could be. Not to create day-1 on-disc locked content that we need to pay extra for, not to charge $60 for a disc that costs less than 20 cents to manufacture. I could understand $60 back in the SNES cartridge days because cartridge hardware wasn't cheap, but not today... even with all the assets that have to be created. As an indie dev, I think that the current scene in big-company gaming is a travesty.
It is true that a disk may be cheap to manufacture, but it's not the disk price, it's the price of the experience, and the work people put into it, most games though start off as 120$ but if you wait 6 or so months, their price will come down to 60 or 30 dollars anyway.
16:25 the first game had even more stuff like that. For example one of the shotguns had to be reloaded by repeatedly pressing the reload button and with the double-barreled shotgun you had to fire from each barrel with a different mouse button. Stuff like that was a bit inconvenient but it added a lot to the atmosphere - you felt like your weapons were built from spare parts in the metro. Sadly Last Light doesn't have these things.
I like the linearity of metro, not only does it reflect the linear nature of the tunnels but the thing that puts me off most RPG's like fallout was the open world and that you had to actually find the quest and I almost never bothered finding the quests because I never had an incentive to do so.
There actually is a moral system in Last Light, if you use the kill instead of knock out and don't give any bullets to the beggers in Venice you will get the bad ending. But if you use knock out and give bullets to the beggers in Venice you get the good ending. There are extreme differences in the good and bad endings so it really does matter.
Dear Total Biscuit, do you at least double check your videos before posting them? You've been ranting about burning too many filters since you had your mask on -- ALL THE TIME the timer was stuck at 5:00 minutes, meaning the filters were NOT being used at all... For others: If the watch is counting time in seconds, then you are burning filters and you are in a toxic air area. If it doesn't, you can take your mask off.
I Love how TB keeps thinking the game is being hyper realistic when he has his gas mask on when it's not required, even though it automatically starts filtering when it's required...TB: He knows all and don't let anyone tell him different XD
I really wish TB would be alive right now I think metro exodus is his dream game just like me he loves metro but whised it would be more open world much less linear more Character interactions better graphics much better customization it’s what we all wanted but unfortunately he won’t see metro exodus ...
Took me three hours to realize you gotta push the damn thing outta the way. I love that this game doesn't guide you too much in the later stages. At first sure. But at some points you really have to do it all by your lonesome.
There is a gap between a cylinder and a barrel. Bullet is forced through it and seals the chamber as it happens, but once it moves fully inside the barrel the gases in the chamber have an escape route and on a powerful gun will cut your finger off. Mythbusters tried it. You shoot carbine revolvers by holding both hands together. Looks a bit weird, but works quite well.
For the record, it DOES has a morality system. When ever you do good things, a white fade comes over your screen. It's the same in Metro 2033. You get a different ending depending on what you do.
I believe the thumb is located at the front/side of the rotating mechanism. When the gun fires, there's a gap between the rotating magazine and the barrel. I think the fire/explosion can seep through the gap and could cut your thumb
Thanks for all the excellent reviews which bring to my attention a lot of great games like Shadow Warrior and Hard Reset. Enjoying Metro Last Light immensely since picking it up this Friday. Cheers!
Awesome review! Big fan of the original and I love Last Light as the second installment. Tons of atmosphere and really drags you into it. All the weapons sound eargasmingly good. Seriously great affects and being that I have no problem with very linear sections this is one of my favorite games of all time by far. Thanks for the in depth review with plenty of good points made and a good take on how the game can play. I would love to know what you use for your outro music. Sounds so kick ass!
*Eh, I guess you can register this as a spoiler, so yeah. Don't say I didn't warn you.* One of my favorite qualities was the point given at 29:36 where you don't actually know if there is a morality system, until later in the game, in which you start to act as what you would normally do (well, you know, your standard thought process, not actually experience), and you would just remark on what you would 'become'.
I love how Biscuit's saying he'd love to be able to explore more, when there's a fuckton of it after the first few hours. He'd be eating his words if he got to the Swamp section :P
Totalbiscuit provides extensive reviews, containing details of the game's backstory, display, menu navigation and analysis of anything that may need explaining before the action commences. I firmly believe that if you return to school you might learn to spell, and notice why the styleTotalbiscuit employs is highly commendable.
One problem I have with this game is that the controls in the settings are poorly descripted. It took me about 3 hours until I figured out you had to hold G (if playing on a PC) to unequip gas mask, otherwise you just wipe it. I checked some of the controls on different website, and there were a ton I had no idea I could do, and still don't because I don't use an Xbox controller.
Also, the time you have when wearing the gas mask (using up filters) doesn't occur until you're in an area that requires the air to be filtrated such as on the outside. It is still not a good thing to walk around in the mask when it isn't needed though since the glass might break completely and you'll have to try and find a new one.
I enjoyed the linearity of these games because they let gameplay focus on immersion and great atmospheric story telling, I don't necessary always like this type of linear fps but the metro series captures exactly what I want from a post apocalyptic game.
That 'battle rifle' you found in the bit with the 'ghosts' looked like a heavily converted version of the old wartime Mosin-Nagant 7.62 (see Enemy At The Gates) with some kind of side-loading bullet-chute fitted, the bolt slide altered and most of the wooden furniture taken off. Nice bit of accuracy there in terms of what would be available in the setting to these people, but for game purposes it's probably not that useful given the short ranges involved so you'd probably be right to leave it.
There is a morality system, when your screen flashes white and you hear a distinctive sound, you gained points or something, you also need to be non lethal, then you ha a CHANCE to get the secret ending. Like in the hidden rooms or if you chose to save a certain character in the story.
You've probably already been corrected, but SSAA is for super-sample anti-aliasing. What you were probably thinking of was SSAO, screen space ambient occlusion.
The game is pretty straightforward, easy to play, just some too dark areas sometimes, might be scary if you turn off the lights, etc, but i went through the "scary" levels and didnt quite notice any adrenaline sympathetic functions being raised.
16:50 , The lighter always shows u where the nearest exit is, the flame will point toward where the air is coming from. And that is where u need to go.
I'm speaking of the graphics settings, of course. The other options are the same AFAICT. Perhaps they were aiming for a more console-like experience for Steam OS users. I agree with most that was said in the video, except the complaints that there's lack of exploration. It's not really something that I felt was missing. The sequence is linear, yes, but there are several ways to approach an area, while not becoming a backtracking fest. There's an appropriate amount of user freedom for a game with a set story progression and pacing. One complaint I have is on the save system. I wish the user had more control over it, at least giving the option to go back a few save points for when the game inadvertently locks you out of a zone, and saving just before such occasions. I hate it when there's a gun customization spot where I'll customize the weapons in an inadequate manner for the following section and then be unable to redo it. A rotating-slot auto save system should be standard in games like this. Single-slot auto saving should be a thing of the past already.
Actually he's right. The tip of the lighter's flame points towards your immediate objective, while the full compass points towards the mission goal in your objectives list. If you get kinda lost, the compass can help you find your way. If you get extremely lost, the lighter will at least get you moving to the right door.
Just because YOU don't get sick from low FOV, doesn't mean there aren't people who do. A thought experiment can easily highlight it: Take a sniper rifle with a powerful zoom and play the whole game only looking through the scope - covering all other sections of the screen. This would force you to look around FAR more. Since it is looking around that creates the motion-sickness it follows that "Less FOV" => "Higher probability for motion sicknes". Q.E.D
Failed to mention that advanced phys-x can make your framerate TANK! I got 2FPS on max, could get it up to 8 and that was in the starting bunker. Turned it up, got to 25 on max, 50 if I turn off aa so yea, phys-x is a system killer.
there is probably a notepad file located in your appdata/4a games which contains all the fine print settings, so keep that in my mind, but i do think they shouldve put more in the in game options for convenience.
This game is available for free when you purchase an Nvidia 660 or above from some retailers in the UK, which is why I came across it. As you would expect if Nvidia are giving it away with 660's+ you'd expect it to run well on a 660+ card and it does. I know totalbiscuit is running SLI Titans but this game still looks fantastic on mid range systems. PS I don't work for a pc retailer or Nvidia
I absolutely LOVE the Metro game series and the books aswell. I agree that the limitations can be annoying but I dont really mind. What I would like to see as a 3rd part to the series is a kind of open world survival game maybe similar to what dayz is like. Open world, hardcore survival style, i Think that this world really would draw alot of players to it, its just so immersive and great.
To be completely honest, this game does deserve much more popularity.
The good thing which I loved about this game was because it was being itself in a sense which makes the game unlike any other. The detail of the game is amazing and I'm glad that 4A Games have made this project a reality

I just bought metro last light for 5$ with all of the dlc's with ranger on steam.
75% discount baby!

Also, you can kill those 'spider' type enemies without shooting them at all, as long as you keep the light on them.
2033 had pretty poor gunplay, but i actually kind of enjoyed it. The shittiness of the weapons made the combat feel really desperate and improvised.
One of my finest memories of 2033 was when I heard my revolver go click while fighting off howlers on the surface, and then having to fight them tooth and nail with my trench knife.
I agree, it kind of added to the whole post apocalypse idea, the guns aren't as better built as before apocalypse and so have more problems
I just played the game on the russian voice acting it was way more immersive...
BROS! Metro MOVIE is here! Its made by FANS of the series ! Search on youtube for the trailer: Metro 2034: Last Light - Live Action Trailer (HD)
efseeable Thats our trailer bro! =)
Haha oops. I coughed up five bucks for ranger mode, and decided it would be a great idea to do my first playthrough on it. Yeah, not a good idea at all.
I feel as if this is what Fallout should look like.
The English voice acting is not that great?
I thought the English voice acting was very solid and didn't take away from the experience, characters like Pavel I thought where voiced extremely well. Sure there were some characters not done as well (for example: Anna and some of the children characters), but once again it in no way took away from the experience.
the voice actor for Pavel is amazing
Kenneth Elliot I second that! The children though, oh god they actually had me laughing in a fit at one point. It were so incredibly bad.
This game is so linear because it is based on the book.
Glukhovsky co-wrote Last Light but LL is not an adaptation of a book (where as Metro 2033 was) and infact LL inspired Metro 2035.
Actually Last Light isn't based on a book as 2034 didn't lend itself to the video game format so the Author of the books wrote LL.
Also because you're in a tunnel for most of it, so there's really only so much they can do.
It's on rails :-D
i loved this game, totally, my favorite FPS all time
This video convinced me to buy the 2033 and last light redux. Looking forward to it!
Game does have morality system, its those flashes of light that give you positive outcome.
I agree with him on the wanting to explore more of the metro, because in the loading screen it shows all the different stations on the map of the metro, and I want to explore it as much as possible.
A lot of people don't notice but the smoke from your lighter points to your objective
Is it me, or does the cart resemble a delorean a tiny bit?
10 year anniversary of the game and I just picked it up for free. Saw the review link on Steam, and had to watch this review. You, sir, are badly missed.
Same thing here. I just finished 2033, Last Light is installing so thought I'd check reviews. Mr TB is very sorely missed.

Just got this for my ps4,man is it a good looking game at 60 fps 1080p.
You can save that girl at the end if you act fast enough...this acts as an example of how this game's morality works. So after watching this in pure darkness fullscreen, as the video ends I go out of fullscreen and get blinded by youtube! Yay...
gunnar eyewear
gtmsnba13 is for pussies, take it like a real man and get blinded
Idk if you figured it out eventually because I stopped watching, but your gas mask filters do not run out unless you are in an environment in which you need one on, this is the same as the first one.

Rest in Peace TB, You may have left this cruel world, but you will never be forgotten

Indeed
Totalbiscuit, died in his battle with cancer. Man, I gotta say I really love watching his old WTF videos, they really give me comfort. The gaming community really lost someone special.
I wish he had done this on the swamp level lol. That was definitely the high point of this game.
Thank you for correcting clip to magazine, it is very much appreciated. :) High technical standards and correct jargon/definitions and all that.
There are moral points for this game so it affects the ending though the moral points are unexplained
They just gave the complete edition of this game away on steam for free today TB. really wish you were here to see the positive side of the industry having competition now, on the other hand wish you were still here to TEAR into the egregious business models. RIP - forever missed LEGEND

Didari start off at "$120" what country do you live in
Prime Paladin I live in New Zealand, and because most people are stupid, they think they can just double the price and it'll be fine.
Didari sucks man, you have my condolences
Prime Paladin Thank you.
If you play Metro 2033 it's actually better than this gameplay wise.

Hmm FOV never bothered me in this game :/
Why does he sound so condescending even to things he's saying somethings are good?
Just his style

Best $5 I ever spent.
If they make an MMO version of Metro, that would be a DayZ killer in my opinion.
When can THQ come back? I miss all their games. I'll buy you a drink THQ!

This game is fantastic, it makes you WTF every 20 seconds and keeps you on your toes. Definite GOTY material.
.....ohh this is why he disabled comments

lol that annoyed me too
it does have a morality system, and it does affect how the ending plays out. its pretty cool how it kinda seamlessly fits in
20 minutes spent talking in the menu, classic TB :)
I wish u’d stayed long enough for Metro Exodus RIP
He would've loved Exodus :'(
He would have indeed... :’(
I Love how TB keeps thinking the game is being hyper realistic when he has his gas mask on when it's not required, even though it automatically starts filtering when it's required...TB: He knows all and don't let anyone tell him different XD

Took me three hours to realize you gotta push the damn thing outta the way. I love that this game doesn't guide you too much in the later stages. At first sure. But at some points you really have to do it all by your lonesome.
I have a gtx780ti with a fx-8350 8core 4.4ghz and I get less then 10frames running this thing maxed :(

You should play it. Just finished it and it's quite amazing. Have to have an appreciation for atmosphere, though.

Thanks for the in depth review with plenty of good points made and a good take on how the game can play. I would love to know what you use for your outro music. Sounds so kick ass!
*Eh, I guess you can register this as a spoiler, so yeah. Don't say I didn't warn you.*
One of my favorite qualities was the point given at 29:36 where you don't actually know if there is a morality system, until later in the game, in which you start to act as what you would normally do (well, you know, your standard thought process, not actually experience), and you would just remark on what you would 'become'.
I love how Biscuit's saying he'd love to be able to explore more, when there's a fuckton of it after the first few hours. He'd be eating his words if he got to the Swamp section :P
Great game review. The opening part of your video showing the options was really helpful to me. Thanks
Looks like you missed the feature where you can recharge your light with your generator.
Totalbiscuit provides extensive reviews, containing details of the game's backstory, display, menu navigation and analysis of anything that may need explaining before the action commences. I firmly believe that if you return to school you might learn to spell, and notice why the styleTotalbiscuit employs is highly commendable.
Funny thing is that the levels after this one at which TB stops are the ones which are a bit more open and MUCH more terrifying.
Great video. I appreciate the detailed reviews you bring to us!
Nice bit of accuracy there in terms of what would be available in the setting to these people, but for game purposes it's probably not that useful given the short ranges involved so you'd probably be right to leave it.
lol you know when TotalBiscuit gets excited during gameplay that it must be good. I'm sold :D
'Click to pay 5$ to skip to the gameplay'
TB never fails to amuse.
Got this game on ps plus for free, at first I thought I wasn't all that into it but in the end I loved this game even a bit more than Bioshock
What you were probably thinking of was SSAO, screen space ambient occlusion.
gas mask filters aren't used up when you are in areas with clean air, also health regenerates but stays low for about 30 seconds after taking damage
Total Biscuit enters armored trolley. "Yeah, I actually have a train here."
Q.E.D
Probably one of the most immersive games I have played.
What do you mean by "gamey" at 26:03 and 29:19?
I'll tell you what metro last light is.....one of the best (personal preference) shooters ever!
Thank you! Its always nice to learn new things. If you held your hand further down away from the body of the gun, I presume that would be safe?
I honestly thought the English voice cast did a great job. They were pretty convincing during certain moments.
