There is a sweet spot for PITs, too slow and they just turn the wheel and straighten out, too fast and you wont be able locate all of your suspect at the scene. PITs are only one option in the arsenal police use to stop fleeing suspects in vehicles, they just typically have a high success rate.

It's the same reason they can't perform PIT maneuvers or aren't allowed to chase in a lot of places... Individual department "policies". In a lot of places, officers can get in trouble for not actively trying to prevent damage to the police vehicles. It's less of an issue in big cities and with state police, because they tend to employ their own full time mechanics and auto-body people, ultimately costing A LOT less to repair damages.

They weren’t using the citizen as a blockade. That truck wasn’t blocking the suspect at all, which is why the suspect was able to drive off. By telling the citizen to stay put, they were preventing the citizen from getting hit if the suspect took off - which the suspect did.

Tactical block is tricky. The purpose is to stop a slow moving vehicle wothout damaging the police cars at all. He told him to move cause the car would have just rear ended the cops causing damage

I don't think I've ever seen a less effective deployment/ plan by so many officers. Multiple officers at the initial stop, could have spiked him then. During the chase, they started to block him in, then one officer calls off the blockade. Multiple multiple opportunities for PIT not taken. Alot of extra risk that didn't need to take place.

If one of those officers HAD deployed stop sticks while the car was stopped, we'd be celebrating the move, cause it would have been smart. It would have been a good thing to have as part of the plan. I worked for a municipality where cop management required an officer to get permission to use blue lights or a siren. On another occasion, officers stood by awaiting permission to use their weapons while an elderly woman was being mauled to death by a pack of dogs. Too many lawyers running police operations nowadays, and not enough police running them.

Its also unlikely he would actually hit someone given he was struggling to maintain 15MPH. If you hit him it's a guarantee of a collision. If you leave him "running" at jogging speed you'll catch him when he inevitably stops. Not to mention this kind of damage to a car works like a cascade. It starts from the tires, and things begin to fail very quickly from there.

I certainly hope that the department takes note of all the comments in this video and changes there policies. Refusing to PIT does nothing to prevent damage being done to the cars, and only makes the department look incompetent when the videos of hour long chases at 15 mph are posted on TH-cam.

They weren’t using the citizen as a blockade. That truck wasn’t blocking the suspect at all, which is why the suspect was able to drive off. By telling the citizen to stay put, they were preventing the citizen from getting hit if the suspect took off - which the suspect did.

I saw a video last week where the guy was going to take off, the deputy took his pocketknife and stabbed the back tire several times.
Tactical block is tricky. The purpose is to stop a slow moving vehicle wothout damaging the police cars at all. He told him to move cause the car would have just rear ended the cops causing damage

Horrible response from the cops. Using a civilian at the first stop to block him in endangering the civilian from cross. Then not taking the 25+ opportunities to get him off the road where he could have killed some random driver, because they didn't want to damage their nice trucks. Shameful.

It’s unbelievable to me that a car completely surrounded by police can get away like that.
I don't think I've ever seen a less effective deployment/ plan by so many officers. Multiple officers at the initial stop, could have spiked him then. During the chase, they started to block him in, then one officer calls off the blockade. Multiple multiple opportunities for PIT not taken. Alot of extra risk that didn't need to take place.
As someone from Arkansas this chase was painful to watch.

Of all the things in this video to criticize, that's like the least appropriate thing- especially since within minutes of first fleeing they successfully used spike strips to ruin 3 of the suspects' 4 tires. It legit almost feels like you have an ulterior motive.
@@williamnother8066 No ulterior motive. There's doing things well, and there's doing things better. I'd hope those officers came to a similar conclusion. That's what professionals do: learn and improve. Decreasing the odds of a 100 MPH chase or shortening it with stop sticks from the get go reduces risk for both the public and pursuing officers. If one of those officers HAD deployed stop sticks while the car was stopped, we'd be celebrating the move, cause it would have been smart. It would have been a good thing to have as part of the plan. Glad it worked out though.

I worked for a municipality where cop management required an officer to get permission to use blue lights or a siren. On another occasion, officers stood by awaiting permission to use their weapons while an elderly woman was being mauled to death by a pack of dogs. Too many lawyers running police operations nowadays, and not enough police running them.

Its also unlikely he would actually hit someone given he was struggling to maintain 15MPH. If you hit him it's a guarantee of a collision. If you leave him "running" at jogging speed you'll catch him when he inevitably stops. Not to mention this kind of damage to a car works like a cascade. It starts from the tires, and things begin to fail very quickly from there.
