John McGovern came and visited my sick uncle at his home about 13/14 years ago. Spent a good hour talking about football. One of football's finest

Bloody decent fella is John McGovern, really enjoyed this great interview. The Derby and Forest stories never get old. Was a great time for British football.

Fabulous player. Very cultured, intelligent, and tough--the unsung hub of the teams he played for. Scotland sides were strong in those days, but it is still quite mystifying that JM did not win a single senior cap.

The 77/78 title winning team was a REAL team.
That achievement wont ever be repeated

Lovely guy, so modest about his contribution to the success of Forest. A disgrace that he was never capped by his country during an era when if they had picked the best players available they actually might have done something special.

Ray Clemence was light years ahead of Shilton,,,, He made less mistakes,,, Poland 73 Shilton,,,, says it all Not a natural athlete Clemence was IMHO the better

When Clemence was England’s no 1, England never qualifed to world cup finals. When they finally qualified to Spain -82, Shilton and Clemence both played the same amount of qualification matches but England gained more points with Shilton in goal. And Clemence have been known to make silly mistakes in his career. Shilton wasn’t always faultless but mosty people blame him for not being able to foresee cheating (Maradona handball) or deflection (Brehme’s freekick) in the 125 matches he played for England or the over 1000 competitive games he played altogether. That says it all about his ability. Of course that Domarski goal against Poland in -73 was silly no question about that.

@@timomakkonen4525 shilton was never good,,, Poland was the biggest blunder, Then Maradona, He never had that spring that Clemence had. Shilton proved that in 90 wc he was flat footed semi finals Germany free kick

Fair enough, each of us have our opinion. Both of them were not in the peak of their careers in the latter part of the 80’s because obviously they were getting on a bit. But still today watching clips of Shilton from the 70’s to early 80’s I don’t see how someone can argue he didn’t have the spring or athletism. But we all see things differently. Clemence was an exceptionally good goalkeeper in my opinion also of course.

As a player Shilton was way more confident in his own ability than most and he had the balls to express his ambition to aim for perfection even though he knew it was not possible. That I think has had the effect that a lot of people disregard his contribution in the England team and the very few mistakes he made are highlighted more by them than the saves he has made.
