The point of AVGN was to make fun of old *bad* games, and then came along a horde of people reviewing "bad" other stuff: Nostagia Critic reviewed bad old *movies* Linkara reviewed bad *comics* Cinema Snob reviewed bad *gore/porn movies* Film Brain reviewed bad *modern movies* ...and almost all (former) members of Channel Awesome had their schtick with reviewing something *bad* . Angry Joe reviews just games.. Not only bad ones. He clearly took some inspiration from AVGN in his review style, but the material he reviewes differentiates greatly. I think that's one of the reasons he wasn't on the site with NC. That and the fact that he was basically his equal when it came to views and fans, and he probably got wind of some of the things that happened to creators on Channel Awesome.
Joe's video game reviews are really great for the most part. He's equal parts in depth as he is casual. When it comes to his movie reviews however, i find that he plays the "Critics hated this movie?!" card at almost every turn. He seems to completely disregard actual objective flaws in favor of subjective takes WHILE making people who dissect flaws look like assholes. In summary, his game reviews are mostly on point. His movie reviews are overly simple and offer nothing to the online 'critic-sphere'. In my O P I N I O N.
I take Joe's movie reviews almost as if it's a couple of friends 40 minute opinion, if I wanted critical thought, I'd hit up Stuckmann/Jahns or a text review

Micro Transactions GREATLY impact the gameplay of multiplayer sport games, you should see what kind of things you come up against in the first day of FIFA, directly making the gameplay AGAINST you unfair because you haven't spent money which the opponent has. As a single player example, take a look at Middle Earth: Shadow of War. That game had far too much levelling and grinding in the game, and then to make matters worse they would bait you the entire time you play with these micro transactions that give you free xp, gear and upgrades, thus directly changing the gameplay. And then on the inverse, look at a game like Spiderman on the ps4, by the time you beat the game, you will have unlocked just about everything in the skill tree as well as the upgrades of some of your favourite suits. None of these upgrades feel like a grind because you earn it at an adequate pace, and then it also changes up the gameplay loop enough to make the game feel fresh.
I agree that his game reviews are the best part, and to some extent his "fandom" videos, mainly because his strength is generally being the face of gaming and willing to call out the BS of the business or games in general that many fans are sick up. But at the same time, he has a casualness about him that prevents him from becoming a pariah (unlike, say, Jim Sterling) since he never comes off as a snob or tries to. He's basically just a big collective voice that clearly has fun doing what he does but at least has the illusion of a wielder of average gamer opinion.

I think there’s a passionate guy in there who cares about the medium as well as the content he makes, however I feel he’s kinda limited by the format he’s limited himself to and he could be so much better if he either refined or cut the skits and either upped his budget or just chose not to do things he couldn’t do more professionally.

Angry Joe has his hits and his misses but he's reliable, he just kinda goes a bit too far in some places. He's a great background reviewer, something to enjoy while playing a game.
He cancelled his Mass Effect Andromeda review coz he couldn’t get the N7 costume and instead just sat and talked about the game as a discount angry review. You hit the nail right on the head with his priorities.
That was the biggest disappointment I felt as a subscriber. It made me question if he was actually the Mass Effect fan he claimed to be (I was extremely interested in hearing his opinion of the game at the time)
I feel that the fight scene you are talking about with Joe and other Joe is getting bashed without the right context. The context to that clip is that he is upset about how boring and grindy it is to watch AI fight the game and speed it up like its a mobile game because hes forced to watch AI battles for the currency in the game. That dread of watching that whole thing was the joke. But I do agree with the fact that some of his clips and jokes can drag on a bit too much and be quite filler for his videos, and that excuse I have made does not take out the overall argument.
Sounds like a bad concept for a skit tho. making that point with one of the actual fight and timing it would be good. The skit and efforts of costumes should probably be used on something more engaging and fun
I agree. I feel like he looks at the more nerdy nitpicky stuff in films. Like his Last Jedi review was childish really. I do like the guy and have been subscribed to him for years though, just have been avoiding his movie reviews cause the ones I’ve seen I just can’t get myself to care for. Not because of conflicting opinions, he just doesn’t look for what I look for in movies is all.
His Skyrim review is probably his worst review. He hardly criticizes anything, doesn't go into much detail about most things, and then praise things like the combat. The combat of Skyrim is absolutely atrocious. That whole review just felt he was swept under the hype train and it just made him completely ignore all the major flaws of the game, to not come to the conclusion that the game is actually not very good.

I've been a fan of Joe for about 9-10 years, and while hes had his ups and *definitely* his down, I still find him to be a fun, positive and passionate guy. I enjoyed your guy's takes on him and found this fairly respectful and insightful to watch. Also in regards to the skits, they're definitely not for everyone. Joe is aware of this, and did make efforts to cut down the skits--and his Rapid Fire reviews at first were a way to get his opinion out there without the skits, period, saving him time and money. He got MASSIVE backlash over it, as it's seen as a core identity of his channel. It's a double edged sword. I certainly see your guy's point on it, though. As I've gotten older I find myself skipping the skits after the first viewing, but as Jamie said, a lot of people do love and want them. They're sometimes cringe as hell, but they have so much heart. Edit: Rubin, Joe's Puerto Rican, lol. Not judging at all, just thought I'd correct it.
He just needs better quality control on his skits. Some of them are hilarious such as "want to play another zombie game" but some of them drag on and on painfully. Mostly the ones where he is in costume acting out a character from the game.

The reason I unsubscribed from him was because of his attitude. He was either overly negative or overly positive. And he would just nitpick the tiniest little details that just don’t mean anything. He didn’t feel like a person with something interesting to say. He felt like a raging, annoying fan boy. Which I guess is the appeal for other people but it just slowly turned me off from his content.
I am bad with accents. I usually can not identify accents or I identify them wrong. I don’t even think that I have an accent and so many people have told me what’s my accent because they hear it.
I agree with Bordo, usually if you grow up around an accent and are very familiar with it both in the media and in real life, you often don't pick it up or pay attention to it. I have a similar accent to the Jar guys, so I never really recognise their voices as an accent, even though everyone has one.

About the hispanic accent adding to the aggressive nature ... I wouldn't really call that racist. It's just a part of how the accent sounds. Spanish is romantic and passionate language so if someone sounds mads, they sound really mad. Even in English, though I'd say an angry Hispanic speaking spanish with real rage is more scary than in English. Oh and this coming from someone who is Hispanic-American.

My favorite skit is the Dying Light video intro, that in general is one of his best. I'm 50/50 on his content, like half of his shit is TERRIBLE, but he's got some gems for sure
His appeal has always been having a sort of honest feeling to him. He rarely feigns emotion or feels too scripted. His opinions generally don't matter, he really is mostly himself throughout and it is just interesting to see how he gives his casual take. The presence of his brother adds an element of closeness to the audience. I also agree Angry Joe is generally better when he is at least somewhat upset about the object of the video. Although even when he loves something, he has a certain charm that connects to a general movie and game nerd.
Canned Rat Meat I used to like him until I realize how bad his movie reviews are. He is terrible at being critical of them. Sometimes he has a movie opinion that works with the actual flaws vs strengths of the film. Other times I wonder did he and I see the same film. He will say a movie is bad and I say wait that was actually a good movie. Or he will say the movie is good and I will say, no that was garbage. Sometimes I do agree with him. The problems are we agree very rarely.
It's funny, Angry Video Game Nerd separated himself into not just game reviews back in 2007. He is passionate about movies and made a movie review marathon that continued for 10 years. He established that he is not just angry gamer, unlike Angry Joe. AJ tried to do movie reviews but people don't really take you seriously if you give Revenge of the Fallen 4/5.
Angry Joe is a remarkably consistent creator. Even though his skits can be corny at times, the dude's gaming Angry Reviews are still killer to this day. The fact that his content hasn't gotten stale in the 10(ish?) years he's been around is a testament to the dude's drive and love for making videos. Mad respect for the man.
He’s getting better; bringing Alex on who clearly knows a lot more about film analysis helped a lot. He’s even taken back the positive review of Suicide Squad he gave saying he realizes now that the movie has a ton of issues. But yeah, his game reviews are definitely more on point even now.
So this video is the first time I'm hearing 3 out of 4 of these men speak and I can barely tell them apart. Their accents are similar and their voices have roughly the same pitch. It doesn't help that Alex and Jamie are brothers so their voices are extra similar!
I like a lot of his opinions but I hate how aggressive and nit picky he can sometimes be. That being said, I do watch a good amount of his reviews, even though we have relatively different taste. And I won't lie.. his coworkers or partners or friends or whatever, are excruciating. They're literal yes men, and they never disagree with him.
Honestly Joe is informative in regards to his game reviews as to how the games work and features but he plays the "Corporations are all greedy" card so often and without actually delving into why some studios maybe doing things a certain way, that it comes across as preachy and ignorant to me.
Late but a long time fan. I still enjoy his skits. What comes to mind is the God of War ones where he asks Other Joe to read runes or when OJ sneezes on his dead mother’s ashes. I think the skits serves as a nice distraction and like you said, “cherry on top.” I think the skits are particularly effective for people who have short attention spans like me. I think of them as a huge bonus. I will say, though, that I love listening to and watching him, regardless, so I don’t mind the absence too much. That being said, I still prefer their presence, given the option.
I don't share AJ's taste in film or sense of humor, but I really appreciate two facts: -He lays out the contents of the game nicely, it's a good one-stop shop to getting informed about the game -He's big on consumer protection and calling out abusive business practices, it probably makes him less 'friends' in the industry, but he doesn't compromise when it comes to this
When guys get into the territory of "I have two sides of a viewership to cater to" is when everything goes to shit. When Angry Joe dropped two hour long videos saying "Fuck The Last Jedi" Then completely walked it back with a video that started with him pulling out two books going "Oh this is why I got things wrong you guys were right" Oh bullshit mate. Angry Joe would never walk back like that after firing on all cylinders. When TH-camrs get into that "I don't really wanna go back to a 9-5 work routine" is when the bullshit really starts creeping in.
Joe being the "everyman" in games is the perfect critique of him. For years, I watched him because I respected his opinion and I found that we had similar taste(and he was witty from time to time, while not being a comedy show). So, for years, a good review from Joe means I like the game and I'll buy. Then he got like nostalgia critic and convoluted his reviews with skits. I still agree with his opinions, but it's hard to watch his videos now.
"Is Angry Joe as GOOD as they say?" Well considering he told a director and his familly to go kill themselves as a "joke" , and can't take criticism, no he isn't.

Angry Joe has his hits and his misses but he's reliable, he just kinda goes a bit too far in some places. He's a great background reviewer, something to enjoy while playing a game.
He's not my favorite but I like him alright. Although, I don't trust him with action games that much. He has a comfort zone when it comes to games
He cancelled his Mass Effect Andromeda review coz he couldn’t get the N7 costume and instead just sat and talked about the game as a discount angry review. You hit the nail right on the head with his priorities.
That was the biggest disappointment I felt as a subscriber. It made me question if he was actually the Mass Effect fan he claimed to be (I was extremely interested in hearing his opinion of the game at the time)

I feel that the fight scene you are talking about with Joe and other Joe is getting bashed without the right context. The context to that clip is that he is upset about how boring and grindy it is to watch AI fight the game and speed it up like its a mobile game because hes forced to watch AI battles for the currency in the game. That dread of watching that whole thing was the joke.
But I do agree with the fact that some of his clips and jokes can drag on a bit too much and be quite filler for his videos, and that excuse I have made does not take out the overall argument.
I agree that they forgot to mention that, but even then he could have just sped it up to show how long it took instead of showing its entierty.
That's like saying that a lame parody is good because it was intended to be lame. The context doesn't always excuse something.
Sounds like a bad concept for a skit tho. making that point with one of the actual fight and timing it would be good. The skit and efforts of costumes should probably be used on something more engaging and fun

I agree. I feel like he looks at the more nerdy nitpicky stuff in films. Like his Last Jedi review was childish really. I do like the guy and have been subscribed to him for years though, just have been avoiding his movie reviews cause the ones I’ve seen I just can’t get myself to care for. Not because of conflicting opinions, he just doesn’t look for what I look for in movies is all.
AJ is mostly funny when he reviews bad games.
His Skyrim review is probably his worst review. He hardly criticizes anything, doesn't go into much detail about most things, and then praise things like the combat. The combat of Skyrim is absolutely atrocious. That whole review just felt he was swept under the hype train and it just made him completely ignore all the major flaws of the game, to not come to the conclusion that the game is actually not very good.

Far-right/conservative Republicans, Neoliberal Democrats, and Right-wing Libertarians (who are probably the most far-right to an absurd degree, but they have a small chunk of reasonable people among them (actual small "L" libertarians). I've been a fan of Joe for about 9-10 years, and while hes had his ups and *definitely* his down, I still find him to be a fun, positive and passionate guy.
I enjoyed your guy's takes on him and found this fairly respectful and insightful to watch.
Also in regards to the skits, they're definitely not for everyone. Joe is aware of this, and did make efforts to cut down the skits--and his Rapid Fire reviews at first were a way to get his opinion out there without the skits, period, saving him time and money. He got MASSIVE backlash over it, as it's seen as a core identity of his channel.
It's a double edged sword. I certainly see your guy's point on it, though. As I've gotten older I find myself skipping the skits after the first viewing, but as Jamie said, a lot of people do love and want them. They're sometimes cringe as hell, but they have so much heart.

He just needs better quality control on his skits. Some of them are hilarious such as "want to play another zombie game" but some of them drag on and on painfully. Mostly the ones where he is in costume acting out a character from the game.

The reason I unsubscribed from him was because of his attitude. He was either overly negative or overly positive. And he would just nitpick the tiniest little details that just don’t mean anything. He didn’t feel like a person with something interesting to say. He felt like a raging, annoying fan boy. Which I guess is the appeal for other people but it just slowly turned me off from his content.

I am bad with accents. I usually can not identify accents or I identify them wrong. I don’t even think that I have an accent and so many people have told me what’s my accent because they hear it.
Everybody has an accent, there is no such thing as accentless English.
I agree with Bordo, usually if you grow up around an accent and are very familiar with it both in the media and in real life, you often don't pick it up or pay attention to it. I have a similar accent to the Jar guys, so I never really recognise their voices as an accent, even though everyone has one.

About the hispanic accent adding to the aggressive nature ... I wouldn't really call that racist. It's just a part of how the accent sounds. Spanish is romantic and passionate language so if someone sounds mads, they sound really mad. Even in English, though I'd say an angry Hispanic speaking spanish with real rage is more scary than in English. Oh and this coming from someone who is Hispanic-American.

My favorite skit is the Dying Light video intro, that in general is one of his best. I'm 50/50 on his content, like half of his shit is TERRIBLE, but he's got some gems for sure

His appeal has always been having a sort of honest feeling to him. He rarely feigns emotion or feels too scripted. His opinions generally don't matter, he really is mostly himself throughout and it is just interesting to see how he gives his casual take. The presence of his brother adds an element of closeness to the audience.
I also agree Angry Joe is generally better when he is at least somewhat upset about the object of the video. Although even when he loves something, he has a certain charm that connects to a general movie and game nerd.

Canned Rat Meat I used to like him until I realize how bad his movie reviews are. He is terrible at being critical of them. Sometimes he has a movie opinion that works with the actual flaws vs strengths of the film. Other times I wonder did he and I see the same film. He will say a movie is bad and I say wait that was actually a good movie. Or he will say the movie is good and I will say, no that was garbage. Sometimes I do agree with him. The problems are we agree very rarely.
It's funny, Angry Video Game Nerd separated himself into not just game reviews back in 2007. He is passionate about movies and made a movie review marathon that continued for 10 years. He established that he is not just angry gamer, unlike Angry Joe. AJ tried to do movie reviews but people don't really take you seriously if you give Revenge of the Fallen 4/5.

AJ's game reviews are usually pretty good; his movie reviews suck though.
He’s getting better; bringing Alex on who clearly knows a lot more about film analysis helped a lot. He’s even taken back the positive review of Suicide Squad he gave saying he realizes now that the movie has a ton of issues. But yeah, his game reviews are definitely more on point even now.

So this video is the first time I'm hearing 3 out of 4 of these men speak and I can barely tell them apart. Their accents are similar and their voices have roughly the same pitch. It doesn't help that Alex and Jamie are brothers so their voices are extra similar!

Honestly Joe is informative in regards to his game reviews as to how the games work and features but he plays the "Corporations are all greedy" card so often and without actually delving into why some studios maybe doing things a certain way, that it comes across as preachy and ignorant to me.
OJ to me makes the skits for me more than Joe himself.

Late but a long time fan. I still enjoy his skits. What comes to mind is the God of War ones where he asks Other Joe to read runes or when OJ sneezes on his dead mother’s ashes. I think the skits serves as a nice distraction and like you said, “cherry on top.” I think the skits are particularly effective for people who have short attention spans like me. I think of them as a huge bonus. I will say, though, that I love listening to and watching him, regardless, so I don’t mind the absence too much. That being said, I still prefer their presence, given the option.

I don't share AJ's taste in film or sense of humor, but I really appreciate two facts:
-He lays out the contents of the game nicely, it's a good one-stop shop to getting informed about the game
-He's big on consumer protection and calling out abusive business practices, it probably makes him less 'friends' in the industry, but he doesn't compromise when it comes to this

When guys get into the territory of "I have two sides of a viewership to cater to" is when everything goes to shit. When Angry Joe dropped two hour long videos saying "Fuck The Last Jedi" Then completely walked it back with a video that started with him pulling out two books going "Oh this is why I got things wrong you guys were right" Oh bullshit mate. Angry Joe would never walk back like that after firing on all cylinders. When TH-camrs get into that "I don't really wanna go back to a 9-5 work routine" is when the bullshit really starts creeping in.

Joe being the "everyman" in games is the perfect critique of him. For years, I watched him because I respected his opinion and I found that we had similar taste(and he was witty from time to time, while not being a comedy show).
So, for years, a good review from Joe means I like the game and I'll buy.
Then he got like nostalgia critic and convoluted his reviews with skits.
I still agree with his opinions, but it's hard to watch his videos now.
