Just bought the game a few days ago after finally playing shadow of Mordor. First thing that pops up in the main menu is WB saying that they have taken the market out of the game due to player base dissatisfaction. Just wanted to thank you all for making it happen😘

I know stat-wise they are different (aka some are afraid of spiders) but just how dynamic are their appearances? Does it get repetitive somewhere down the line? Like does no two orcs look and feel the same? Also how long is the story and how ‘dynamic’ is the nemsis system? Thank you! :)
For anyone coming to this review in 2019, they’ve removed micro transactions, and it is 100% worth the 59.99 price tag, which includes all expansions and DLC. Easily 8/10 and a great sequel to Shadow of Mordor.
Pedro Vilar Yeah it is. Trust me, one of the best video games I bought in recent memories. The nemesis system is perfection, and it has over 10 fortresses to take over.
@@robertmech3069 in the last update they also added new armors (specifically Nazgul masks), two new difficulties, increased the level cap, made xp faster to get, epic and legendary orcs show up more often, and there is more incentive to play once done with the main story with new modes and gaining skills after reaching max level so you can keep getting stronger.
The Nemesis System is a true genius of gaming. I wish more games could create or even allow us to create our own challenges outside the narrative or what they "planned". It’s phenomenal

My point was that what is a "waste" of money is completely subjective, and largely based on how much money the individual has. Phony Pony Bologna You're implying that this happens on a regular basis, when in reality most publishers do not spend time and resources into removing loot box systems from their games if these systems are profitable, especially when they've only been in their games for six months, since they cam still make a profit years down the line. The reason they were removed from SoW is because they *weren't* making a profit off of them, and they weren't making a profit because Monolith designed the game to make the loot boxes as unappealing as possible.
Joe If they cared they wouldn't have put it in in the first place and let it sit out for what was it? At least a year maybe 2? Before finally patching it out. They got their pound of flesh and when the loot boxes started to become public enemy number one they saw an opportunity for some good PR in the process. So they removed the loot boxes, realized it totally fucked game progression so they altered the end game content to make it less insidious. Don't excuse the company that is deliberately trying to fuck YOU over.
Enuma Elish The paid loot boxes were in Shadow of War for a grand total of 6 months, not 2 years. Also, when you talk about "they", you're actually talking about two completely different groups of people, the publishers and the developers. The publishers were the ones who wanted to have a microtransaction system in a predominantly singleplayer focused game, while the developers were the ones who actually had to implement said system into the game. The reason why the microtransaction system could be removed from SoW barely six months after launch was due to the way in which the devs implemented the loot boxes into the game. You never felt the need to purchase additional resources as the game was designed to give you as many of them as you needed by simply playing through it, the content that you received from the loot boxes was never exclusive to them, in fact it was almost always worse than what you found while playing through the game, and even if you did want to purchase loot boxes you could still do so with the tons of in-game currency the game gave you or earn them as rewards for in-game challenges and online missions. The developers deliberately set up the system to be as unappealing as possible and as a result the loot boxes sold incredibly poorly If the loot boxes broke game progression then their removal would have coincided with the July patch, but the July patch came two months after the paid loot boxes were removed. If they truly did have this kind of effect on the progression then you would have expected the game to be nearly unplayable for those two months...and yet it wasn't. The endgame content getting changed in the July patch had absolutely nothing to do with the removal of the loot boxes as they had no effect on progression whatsoever. In order to "beat" act IV Shadow Wars and unlock the epilogue cutscene you had to go through 20 repetitive Shadow War missions which were also designed to allow you to level up and you HAD to go through these missions regardless of how many loot boxes you purchased as none of them allow you to skip this grind. Also, the aim of these missions was to dispatch waves of orcs that attacked you by either killing them, which gave you gear, or dominating them, which gave you followers, the same exact resources than you'd get through the loot boxes and resources which you HAD to acquire in order to progress so purchasing loot boxes for this stage in the game was beyond pointless. What the July patch did, among many other things, was to shorten the number of SW missions required to unlock the epilogue cutscene...however it also increased the level cap so while you can more easily "beat" the game now, you actually have to grind even more to reach max level and as the infinitely repeatable Shadow Wars are still the best source of XP you will still have to go through a lot of these missions. The SW grind was one by design, and there was absolutely nothing insidious about it.

also with the destruction of visceral games I got a really bad feeling that the game they were making was going to be great but then corporate took control and probably going to force microtransactions into that single player Star Wars game

STUNTS Back in D1 we were forced to use binary to complete a code for one exotic weapon, D1 definetly wasnt for kids, while D2 is much shittier, scaled down and simpler version of D1, unfortunetly D1 in its third year was a perfect game but bungie scrapped most of the features that made it great when they were making D2. I know it's late. Just completed the game. Bloody love it. They really went all out and more compared to the first one. Was blown away by how much it improved. Plus I got to fly a freaking dragon and fight a Balrog. Can't get much better then that! 9/10 for me.
That's a very dumb comparison. You don't need to pay anything extra in this game to get anything essential. The vast majority of people actually don't pay anything extra and play through the game just fine.
Raidoton My point is that you pay for something you expect it to be complete. Video games are one of the few forms of entertainment that this practice seems to be ok these days. But is it really okay? This “pay to win” format mainly appeals to young kids, people with addictive personalities, hoarders or people with not much patience so prefer to cheat to progress (in my opinion). Shelling out more cash on a game you have just paid good money for clearly seems like they are taking advantage of us. That’s why I don’t bother with nonsense racketeering of this kind and don’t buy into it.

I remember in Shadow of Mordor there was an Uruk I recruited & all he did was chuckle. Not one word came out of his mouth, it really makes my day just hearing him chuckle while executing himself some orcs. He doesn’t even ask for someone’s final words he just finds it all funny for some reason.
You see, and a game like the Witcher 3 would never do this to you. Devs need to follow in CD Projekt Red's tracks. They know how to deliver an amazing experience without all the expansion/store nonsense. Why do I bring up a 2 year old game? Because nothing will beat it.
I'm really sad about this game. From everything I've seen about it, it's a really good game. However, I cannot abide the terrible loot boxes ham-fisted into it. For me it doesn't matter how much these microtransactions actually effect the game, the fact that they're there is the real insult. I don't even want to deal with the temptation so I'm gonna have to give this game a pass.

@@ramage7646 Little late, but the models and voices themselves are not too dynamic. There is variety, but they're not exactly all unique. You shouldn't feel any repetitiveness in that area for a long time though!

abeabeification I agree but I got it and you can play the game with out buying them I havent gotten to the shadow wars part so that might change but 32 hours in I'm having fun and haven't paid more than the 60 for the game but then again you never need a reason to save money right
This game is 10/10 for me. The fighting is absolute savage , i have been a gamer for over 30 years and this is by far the best swordplay ever in a video game.
This is most likely it. They probably pre-rendered all those cutscenes a long time before they decided to add different armor sets and stuff and they said fuck it, we're not changing the cutscenes.
I know in the (Bungie) Halo games the cutscenes are not pre-rendered, but scripted animations which is apparent when you see dead bodies or vehicles in the same places which can be hilarious at times. Pre-rendered cutscenes are not as enjoyable when you notice it is the *exact* same thing every time regardless of everything else going on. Perhaps an advantage of them are better details if you are using assets outside the game engine.

I started this game in 2018 and I'm still playing in 2019, 150+ hours on my playthrough not counting the DLC stories so far. I am 70% done the main story. This is probably the most impressive video game feat in the history of gaming, I just can't believe how awesome it is. Agree about the microtransactions, but at least they're gone now. My advice is to put the game on the highest difficulty possible and to turn off saviors... If you really want to milk the nemesis system (and this game) for all its full potential, you need to get your butt kicked and slowly climb the ranks. It takes a LONG time to "grind" through, but the grind is so damn fun that it's not truly a grind at all. After 150 hours I am STILL finding new orcs I've never seen before, and I even saw a couple in this review I never met in-game yet. The game is a 10/10 IMO, 7/10 is pretty insulting. I'd give it a 9 just because of the stupid market, other than that it's almost perfect.
I got quickly bored of the first one and sold it, because it turned into what I hate most; a super-hero game. I was just slaughtering everyone, except for the occasional tough orc. Is this a problem they've fixed? I'm considering buying this or AC Odyssey. I loathe AC games, for the casual combat; but apparently it's been improved...enough? Combat looks janky to my eye, but at least the leveling means you can go into areas you shouldn't be and can get your arse kicked. Combat looks a lot smoother in this...but I also remember how overpowered you quickly became.
@@rocketassistedgoat1079 In Shadow of War you can tightly tweak the difficulty to how you want. I put it on the hardest difficulty, disabled saviors and even disabled some of the HUD elements (if you want you can even disable all quick time indicators of which button to press so archers will always kill you). I also like challenging games, and in this game, with the settings I used, boy oh boy did I ever die a LOT. Furthermore, every time an orc kills you they level up like 12 levels or something, so some missions become literally unplayable... At one point I was something like level 16, but the orcs I had to kill in one of the main missions were level 60-80 because they kept killing me and leveling up... Which meant that I had to go out and grind to level and every upgrade counts (gear and skills). It took me something like 300 hours to plow through this game, but I enjoyed every excruciating moment of it. One of the most challenging games I've ever played... And I could have tweaked the interface stuff even further had I wanted to make it EVEN HARDER, but I found that without the QTE indicators and minimap it was hopeless, I just wasn't good enough.

I mean: I readed all Tolkien Books ( Sillmarillion, Lord of the Rings, Beren and Luthien, Fall of Gondolin, etc... ) and this game its a slap in Tolkien's face ( Possessed Talion with Celebrimbor, MILF Shelob, The fight between Celebrimbor and Sauron on top of Bard Dur, and other weird stuff ). When you judge a game and say that its fun, please dont forget that book readers have a keen eye for inconcistencies and silly plot holes, and if you readed the books, you will be pissed by the huge disrespect to the Lore. I agree it is fun, but silly.

I too am losing interest in games. Have been for the past few years (even though I've been an avid gamer since the mid-80's). Seeing Bethesda kill two of my favourite RPG series was the final straw for me. Then there is the constant pure laziness of developers, releasing half-arsed games and "fixing" them later. DLC, most of which should already be in the fucking games in the first place. Greedy companies and idiotic fanboys who defend the outright dick moves of said companies. And still, they continue to take the piss while people throw money at any old pile of shite. It's become such a terrible industry.
Obviously they do. Otherwise it wouldn't affect them so much to feel this way. I'm in the same boat. Love games, I really do. it's probably the only thing I'm passionate about (with an almost fanatical mindset at times). For the past... well... nearly 30 years now. But the current direction, trends and practices of gaming companies (both developers AND publishers) has slowly but surely taken away most of the enjoyment and interest in the industry. Sure, there are still the odd game or two that I enjoy (for the most part anyhow). Overall, it's been increasingly-disappointing with each year that passes.

Coming 2017: EA's Doom Platinum Plus Edition, with day one BFG DLC and Argent D'Nur being blocked until you have enough Upgrade points, which can also be bought alongside randomly selected weapon and Praetor upgrades found in UAC "Weapon Container" loot boxes.
By the way it took less than 24 hours to crack the game and within 2 days someone figured out that you can edit the basic files to give yourself infinite of the micro-transaction currency.
Doom multiplayer has no microtransactions whatsoever, and it is actually so good and fun. Much better than CoD in my opinion. Sadly, maybe because of the major critics' negative reviews, not a lot of people are playing the multiplayer than the game deserves
The personality of the orcs you recruit is by far the best part of the game. It helps it feel alive even when the game has pretty much ended during the fourth act.
Witcher 3 profit = 250 millions Gta 5 only microtransictions alone = 500 million. Activision microtransictions = 3,5 billion. There you have your answers, why make Witcher when you earn way more with Gta online, Overwatch, Cod, Battlefield, Destiny, Star wars battlefront, Fifa, Nba2k18 etc. And guess what those games are full of microtransictions and loot boxes.
Have you considered the long-term profits? Witcher 3 make 250 millions in profit and a ton of customer good-will, ensuring that they can keep making that profit every time they put out a new game because of repeat customers generated by said good-will. On the other hand, you tell me you feel like buying a new FIFA. Also, Overwatch loot boxes are not purchasable with real money. Overwatch is also a very good and fun competitive game, marred by the existence of Bastion.
Punishthefalse i wish it worked like good-will like you mentioned it. But usually companys go after money. In multiplayer games it's way easier too put microtransictions and lootboxes then a single player game like The last of us, Uncharted etc. I only play single player games and none of the games i mentioned expect Witcher 3, i have platina that game. I just pointed out games like those are where the most money are profitable and those games always sell. So microtransictions will never get away when we have games like those. Those games started microtransictions and it's slowly moving in too single player games like in Shadow of war and it will geting worse if people support those awful practises.

I will just clarify what you said - 250mln for witcher3? 1,140bln zł(~317mln usd) for 2015th(and game was released almost in 2nd part of the year) and continued with 250mln next year and ~100mln this year. I'm just curious about the numbers of activision you gave here, seriously let's not count all of the games they made okay? I've got nothing against micro-transactions as long as they don't influence the game in a bad way, but I will stick to CD PROJEKT when it comes to what they do, because trust me, the next game they release(Cyberpunk i guess) will be a huge success - customers trust them and I'm like 95% sure they will keep it that way
Not buying the microtransactions simply isn't enough. If the game sells a normal number of copies then you've already proven to them that it's worth keeping them in because even if *you* aren't buying them, *someone* is. Publishers simply don't care if everyone and their brother is complaining about microtransactions when their profits are clearly rising. You need to not buy the game at all if you want to stop these practices. Enough people need to not buy it such that they lose more money from sales than the amount they gain from the microtransactions.

Corporate Commander - Because adding microtransactions costs basically nothing. As long as the game sells a normal amount of copies, it's like free money from the people willing to buy them. Just throwing some normal game content, XP boosts, in-game currency, etc in a box doesn't cost development resources.

I got this game last month and had a blast. Finished all the quests and collectibles, and still refining my army every now and then. I never experienced microtransactions because they were removed. Great game and the nemesis system is awesome!
I don't care how good this game is, I cannot and will not abide microtransactions in a full price single-player game. I already don't buy a lot of full price triple A games because there's so much out there that simply doesn't appeal to me, especially when it's a narrative-intense experience whose main character you're forced to play as is an unlikable one-dimensional dozy twat.
^ its a tricky spot because by buying the game, although it is good, you are also indirectly supporting their use of microtransactions it'll enable other developers to implement if they find it profitable and will definitely be in future titles if they have poor sales, they'll know they fked up with adding microtransactions to a full price single player game
I’m so glad about how it turned out. I really wanted to play hat game but hold back. Now they took out MTX stuff and I’m on it. It’s so much better than the first one in nearly every regard. Especially the smooth and vicious animations and faster traversal.
I torrent stuff if: 1. They have annoying stuff like this. 2. The game looks good at first but the reviews make it sound suspicious. (I really wish devs still provided us with demos like they used to) 3. They are terribly, horribly optimized.

Well he sort of said it, without the excessive late game grinding, crashing and microtransactions an 8. I dont know about crashing never had such issues since launch with it but the other two have since been fixed or removed. I think the game with all its dlc defi is around an 8-9 today. But then again it has its flaws of course.
I would say a solid 8/10 imo, great game like it's predecessor! If they didn't pull off that microtransactions stunt at first they would've got far better PR on release, but at least they got rid of the dumb system!
@Luis Martinez it's not complicated at all, it's similar to the Batman Arkham games and the recent Spiderman PS4 title from Insomniac! It's really fun and has diverse tactics and combos like most beat em up games!
Be this game good or bad, I would encourage you not to buy it. Yes, this is yet another comment on microtransactions. And yes, I am also tired of them, but there's a reason why the gaming community is dealing with such an uproar against them; this game is the means by which publishers are "testing the waters". If they see their numbers in sales unaltered, next time they won't only dip their toes, but take the first step down the ladder and into the pool, to then take second, and then a third until they finally jump in and submerge. Should this happen they will be holding our hand. And once they descend, we will drown.
Civ5 Gandhi I won't give my opinion on a game I haven't played. But I can say I enjoyed the first one, despite the lackluster story and downright slaughter of Tolkien's Lore. Still, that's not what my statement is about. It addresses a much bigger problem that affects gaming as a whole.
I just feel that it will punish the devs. The publisher has enough money to survive, but if the game fails the studio will pay the price. Look at what just happened to Visceral courtesy of EA. I'm not saying buy the micro transactions, but if you want the game, and MT's aren't required to do well, I'd say go for it.
The DeltaAgent Developers are gamers too, I'm willing to bet many of them agree with the point I am making here. By buying games like these we are only hurting the gaming community and future games as a whole. This game might be only slightly influenced by the microtransactions, in the least possible way. But the next will go a bit further and now maybe it's pacing is broken and we'll never get a Souls-like game again. Meanwhile, another game was trying to tell a compelling story, but the artificial grind interrupts and guts it's chances of immersing us and making us care, now we'll never get a Last of Us again. Buying the game sends a message which spells that you are okay with these changes. Buying this game shows publishers that they can get away with it. We can't let them think that, because if they do then we lose. And if gamers lose Devs do too. After all, they were gamers before they became developers.
The number of publishers that don't take advantage of the consumer is getting less and less. You stupid publishers ever heard of building consumer loyalty buy showing some good will. Sony bandia namco and project cd red are some of the few that are left ea and activision are digging their own grave
If you buy the game they are already getting your 60 bucks. You willingly bought a contaminated game. Anything you pay for microtransactions is gravy to them.
Because they won't see you in their statistics it's a good game and buying it would motivate them to continue making games like it and if everyone bought the game and nobody bought any crates they would see that in their stats that people like the game but not many people buying crates and that's how change is made

Honestly I think that the developers did the fans a favor with the way they made the MT work. Basically WB forced Monolith to put in a MT system. So to counter WB, they made the MT completely useless in order to prevent player from buying the crates. idk if you've played the game but the loot boxes are completely useless and don't benefit you at all. You will progress at the exact same rate whether you use them or not.
You do understand on release day it was the number 1 AAA played on steam. Thats normal numbers despite everyone saying they going to not buy it. The people that are targeted by the microtransactions are whales, must of the time children or adults with gambling tendencies. They are preying on them and make shit tons of money normally

Of course, in the meantime, they've already started screwing us over on some levels as Shadow of War isn't the first to have microtransaction, only the first to put it into a single player game. i really liked the first game, but imma wait for this game to go on sale before i buy it. microtransactions in a singleplayer game is just fucked up, in an RPG no less. one of my favourite things in an RPG is seeing my character progress and get stronger over time. I don't just wanna open box after box hoping i get better gear.
Except you don’t have to buy a Loot box to get gear. You just go kill orcs in game. Literally nothing in game has a damn thing to do with the Loot boxes. They are just there for lazy players who don’t want to go dominate and acquire shitty orcs to pit against better orcs to eventually get the best orcs. But that is exactly the fun part of Shadow of War, so the Loot boxes are legitimately useless side Loot (you get legendary and epic orc captains with training boosts/skills for your orcs). So, buy the game. Don’t buy the Loot boxes.
You get Mirian easily, and the lootboxes you open with the currency are still items and characters that you earned by playing the game. I wouldn't mind the market that much had it just been in-game currency, it would have just been a centralized place to get your gear. And even though they don't force you into buying any of the gold ones (nothing is locked behind them), and you also get them pretty easily, it's still scummy.
I have legendary gear an I haven't ever been to market. Plus yes your gear starts out at certain lvl an damage but that can be upgraded just like charcter

Finally making my way through it now (waited a while, because I wanted to upgrade my PC before playing), and it's a ton of fun. There's a bunch of systems that seem excessive when it comes to equipment, but at the same time, it doesn't feel like a burden. The orcs carryign gems are everywhere over the map, and any time you get into a brawl, you're likely to kill at least one of those. And in general, giving your weapons a lifesteal bonus is a good way to offset the difficulty of being mobbed, since there's no armor stat to reduce incoming damage- all you can do is increase your HP. There's more damage types now- poison is a much bigger deal, and your melee weapons can now do either poison, curse, fire or ice damage, and so can your magic powers. This means they can really tailor orcs to have different strengths or immunities, making more battles feels unique. I'm only through Act I, but I've already had a ton of fun (and I'm probably seriously over-levelled, being at level 20, because I kinda ignored the story missions to hunt down all the collectibles and kill as many orcs as possible). There's a lot of variety here, and it's basically Shadow of Mordor, but better.
This game is clearly a test of future microtransactions. so if you buy this game it will send the message to WB that we are okay with them horrible lootboxes/microtransactions. dont buy it and ignore the game, so WB gets the message loud and clear!

Giving it a pass would also mean people would have an excuse to use it and Publishers to implement it in more games. Most Publishers don't refer to feedback, they simply respond to sales as its the only language they speak.

all of those high review scores in their trailer makes me think that all of the major reviewers can't really be trusted. There's a lot of red flags with this game, and it really doesn't deserve the hype it's getting. If you haven't bought the game already, I suggest you don't until it goes on super sale and you can get the gold edition for $20. Trust me when I say that it's much easier to just deafen yourself to the game entirely and then just re-hype yourself when you eventually buy it on sale. Also, I would have given it a 6/10; I feel a 7/10, which is a regular score, is too generous considering the number of faults this game has.
It's been known for years that 'game review' sites are generally paid off or just corporate shills in general. Most games that rub players the bad way and are universally despised can have very high score on review-sites. This is the main reason people like Angry Joe, Total Biscuit and many other game reviewers are trusted far beyond what the sites can hope for. In general, to me, site reviews means nothing anymore.
I never trust reviews anyhow, with any form of entertainment, especially games. It's blatantly obvious all of the "big name" magazines/sites have been paid to give it a good score, as with so many other titles.

Only got round to buying this game a week ago and binge played it to completion an hour ago. I don’t know what the hate is sure it was tough at parts but never to the point where I even considered purchasing anything in the game. Loved the story, combat, soundtrack and locations. It wasn’t perfect but it was really enjoyable.
I know he was hating on things I loved, like shaming Orcs. There was this one orc I kept shaming he was the two-faced one. He came back from the dead, I recruited him and he betrayed me so I just kept shaming him. He even travel to a different map to fight me. I was going to shame him again but he accidentally died.
The problem was the final act. It was a lot of grinding to get to try final cut scene and clearly not a game development decision. When it got patched, the sole reason for loot boxes seized to exist but in this game, you really don't need them because they just aren't built into the game and now after they have been removed, it's just a great game and in my opinon one of the best third person action games on the market.
At least WB runs away when they see too many angry people complaining about the game's microtransactions. Would have been worse with EA. However, if WB does this shit again with the next lotr game. They will get bitten in the ass.

For anyone coming to this review in 2019, they’ve removed micro transactions, and it is 100% worth the 59.99 price tag, which includes all expansions and DLC. Easily 8/10 and a great sequel to Shadow of Mordor.

Yeah it is. Trust me, one of the best video games I bought in recent memories. The nemesis system is perfection, and it has over 10 fortresses to take over.

@@robertmech3069 in the last update they also added new armors (specifically Nazgul masks), two new difficulties, increased the level cap, made xp faster to get, epic and legendary orcs show up more often, and there is more incentive to play once done with the main story with new modes and gaining skills after reaching max level so you can keep getting stronger.

Phony Pony Bologna You're implying that this happens on a regular basis, when in reality most publishers do not spend time and resources into removing loot box systems from their games if these systems are profitable, especially when they've only been in their games for six months, since they cam still make a profit years down the line.
The reason they were removed from SoW is because they *weren't* making a profit off of them, and they weren't making a profit because Monolith designed the game to make the loot boxes as unappealing as possible.
Joe If they cared they wouldn't have put it in in the first place and let it sit out for what was it? At least a year maybe 2? Before finally patching it out. They got their pound of flesh and when the loot boxes started to become public enemy number one they saw an opportunity for some good PR in the process. So they removed the loot boxes, realized it totally fucked game progression so they altered the end game content to make it less insidious.
Don't excuse the company that is deliberately trying to fuck YOU over.
Enuma Elish The paid loot boxes were in Shadow of War for a grand total of 6 months, not 2 years. Also, when you talk about "they", you're actually talking about two completely different groups of people, the publishers and the developers. The publishers were the ones who wanted to have a microtransaction system in a predominantly singleplayer focused game, while the developers were the ones who actually had to implement said system into the game.
The reason why the microtransaction system could be removed from SoW barely six months after launch was due to the way in which the devs implemented the loot boxes into the game. You never felt the need to purchase additional resources as the game was designed to give you as many of them as you needed by simply playing through it, the content that you received from the loot boxes was never exclusive to them, in fact it was almost always worse than what you found while playing through the game, and even if you did want to purchase loot boxes you could still do so with the tons of in-game currency the game gave you or earn them as rewards for in-game challenges and online missions. The developers deliberately set up the system to be as unappealing as possible and as a result the loot boxes sold incredibly poorly
If the loot boxes broke game progression then their removal would have coincided with the July patch, but the July patch came two months after the paid loot boxes were removed. If they truly did have this kind of effect on the progression then you would have expected the game to be nearly unplayable for those two months...and yet it wasn't.
The endgame content getting changed in the July patch had absolutely nothing to do with the removal of the loot boxes as they had no effect on progression whatsoever. In order to "beat" act IV Shadow Wars and unlock the epilogue cutscene you had to go through 20 repetitive Shadow War missions which were also designed to allow you to level up and you HAD to go through these missions regardless of how many loot boxes you purchased as none of them allow you to skip this grind. Also, the aim of these missions was to dispatch waves of orcs that attacked you by either killing them, which gave you gear, or dominating them, which gave you followers, the same exact resources than you'd get through the loot boxes and resources which you HAD to acquire in order to progress so purchasing loot boxes for this stage in the game was beyond pointless.
What the July patch did, among many other things, was to shorten the number of SW missions required to unlock the epilogue cutscene...however it also increased the level cap so while you can more easily "beat" the game now, you actually have to grind even more to reach max level and as the infinitely repeatable Shadow Wars are still the best source of XP you will still have to go through a lot of these missions. The SW grind was one by design, and there was absolutely nothing insidious about it.

I know it's late. Just completed the game. Bloody love it. They really went all out and more compared to the first one. Was blown away by how much it improved. Plus I got to fly a freaking dragon and fight a Balrog. Can't get much better then that! 9/10 for me.

I know stat-wise they are different (aka some are afraid of spiders) but just how dynamic are their appearances? Does it get repetitive somewhere down the line? Like does no two orcs look and feel the same? Also how long is the story and how ‘dynamic’ is the nemsis system?

I think it has to do with the cutscenes being made BEFORE the items sets were all made. That's just my guess.

This is most likely it. They probably pre-rendered all those cutscenes a long time before they decided to add different armor sets and stuff and they said fuck it, we're not changing the cutscenes.
I know in the (Bungie) Halo games the cutscenes are not pre-rendered, but scripted animations which is apparent when you see dead bodies or vehicles in the same places which can be hilarious at times.
Pre-rendered cutscenes are not as enjoyable when you notice it is the *exact* same thing every time regardless of everything else going on. Perhaps an advantage of them are better details if you are using assets outside the game engine.

I started this game in 2018 and I'm still playing in 2019, 150+ hours on my playthrough not counting the DLC stories so far. I am 70% done the main story.
This is probably the most impressive video game feat in the history of gaming, I just can't believe how awesome it is. Agree about the microtransactions, but at least they're gone now.
My advice is to put the game on the highest difficulty possible and to turn off saviors... If you really want to milk the nemesis system (and this game) for all its full potential, you need to get your butt kicked and slowly climb the ranks.
It takes a LONG time to "grind" through, but the grind is so damn fun that it's not truly a grind at all. After 150 hours I am STILL finding new orcs I've never seen before, and I even saw a couple in this review I never met in-game yet.
The game is a 10/10 IMO, 7/10 is pretty insulting. I'd give it a 9 just because of the stupid market, other than that it's almost perfect.
I got quickly bored of the first one and sold it, because it turned into what I hate most; a super-hero game. I was just slaughtering everyone, except for the occasional tough orc. Is this a problem they've fixed? I'm considering buying this or AC Odyssey. I loathe AC games, for the casual combat; but apparently it's been improved...enough? Combat looks janky to my eye, but at least the leveling means you can go into areas you shouldn't be and can get your arse kicked. Combat looks a lot smoother in this...but I also remember how overpowered you quickly became.
@@rocketassistedgoat1079 In Shadow of War you can tightly tweak the difficulty to how you want. I put it on the hardest difficulty, disabled saviors and even disabled some of the HUD elements (if you want you can even disable all quick time indicators of which button to press so archers will always kill you). I also like challenging games, and in this game, with the settings I used, boy oh boy did I ever die a LOT.
Furthermore, every time an orc kills you they level up like 12 levels or something, so some missions become literally unplayable... At one point I was something like level 16, but the orcs I had to kill in one of the main missions were level 60-80 because they kept killing me and leveling up... Which meant that I had to go out and grind to level and every upgrade counts (gear and skills).
It took me something like 300 hours to plow through this game, but I enjoyed every excruciating moment of it. One of the most challenging games I've ever played... And I could have tweaked the interface stuff even further had I wanted to make it EVEN HARDER, but I found that without the QTE indicators and minimap it was hopeless, I just wasn't good enough.

I too am losing interest in games. Have been for the past few years (even though I've been an avid gamer since the mid-80's). Seeing Bethesda kill two of my favourite RPG series was the final straw for me. Then there is the constant pure laziness of developers, releasing half-arsed games and "fixing" them later. DLC, most of which should already be in the fucking games in the first place. Greedy companies and idiotic fanboys who defend the outright dick moves of said companies.

Coming 2017: EA's Doom Platinum Plus Edition, with day one BFG DLC and Argent D'Nur being blocked until you have enough Upgrade points, which can also be bought alongside randomly selected weapon and Praetor upgrades found in UAC "Weapon Container" loot boxes.
By the way it took less than 24 hours to crack the game and within 2 days someone figured out that you can edit the basic files to give yourself infinite of the micro-transaction currency.

The personality of the orcs you recruit is by far the best part of the game. It helps it feel alive even when the game has pretty much ended during the fourth act.

Those games started microtransictions and it's slowly moving in too single player games like in Shadow of war and it will geting worse if people support those awful practises.

If the game sells a normal number of copies then you've already proven to them that it's worth keeping them in because even if *you* aren't buying them, *someone* is. You need to not buy the game at all if you want to stop these practices. Enough people need to not buy it such that they lose more money from sales than the amount they gain from the microtransactions.

I got this game last month and had a blast. Finished all the quests and collectibles, and still refining my army every now and then. I never experienced microtransactions because they were removed. Great game and the nemesis system is awesome!

I dont know about crashing never had such issues since launch with it but the other two have since been fixed or removed. I think the game with all its dlc defi is around an 8-9 today. But then again it has its flaws of course.
I would say a solid 8/10 imo, great game like it's predecessor! If they didn't pull off that microtransactions stunt at first they would've got far better PR on release, but at least they got rid of the dumb system!
@Luis Martinez it's not complicated at all, it's similar to the Batman Arkham games and the recent Spiderman PS4 title from Insomniac! It's really fun and has diverse tactics and combos like most beat em up games!
Be this game good or bad, I would encourage you not to buy it. Yes, this is yet another comment on microtransactions. And yes, I am also tired of them, but there's a reason why the gaming community is dealing with such an uproar against them; this game is the means by which publishers are "testing the waters". If they see their numbers in sales unaltered, next time they won't only dip their toes, but take the first step down the ladder and into the pool, to then take second, and then a third until they finally jump in and submerge. Should this happen they will be holding our hand. And once they descend, we will drown.
Civ5 Gandhi I won't give my opinion on a game I haven't played. But I can say I enjoyed the first one, despite the lackluster story and downright slaughter of Tolkien's Lore.
Still, that's not what my statement is about. It addresses a much bigger problem that affects gaming as a whole.
I just feel that it will punish the devs. The publisher has enough money to survive, but if the game fails the studio will pay the price. Look at what just happened to Visceral courtesy of EA. I'm not saying buy the micro transactions, but if you want the game, and MT's aren't required to do well, I'd say go for it.
The DeltaAgent Developers are gamers too, I'm willing to bet many of them agree with the point I am making here. By buying games like these we are only hurting the gaming community and future games as a whole. This game might be only slightly influenced by the microtransactions, in the least possible way. But the next will go a bit further and now maybe it's pacing is broken and we'll never get a Souls-like game again. Meanwhile, another game was trying to tell a compelling story, but the artificial grind interrupts and guts it's chances of immersing us and making us care, now we'll never get a Last of Us again.
Buying the game sends a message which spells that you are okay with these changes. Buying this game shows publishers that they can get away with it.
We can't let them think that, because if they do then we lose. And if gamers lose Devs do too. After all, they were gamers before they became developers.

You will progress at the exact same rate whether you use them or not.

i really liked the first game, but imma wait for this game to go on sale before i buy it. microtransactions in a singleplayer game is just fucked up, in an RPG no less. one of my favourite things in an RPG is seeing my character progress and get stronger over time. I don't just wanna open box after box hoping i get better gear.

Except you don’t have to buy a Loot box to get gear. You just go kill orcs in game. Literally nothing in game has a damn thing to do with the Loot boxes. They are just there for lazy players who don’t want to go dominate and acquire shitty orcs to pit against better orcs to eventually get the best orcs.
But that is exactly the fun part of Shadow of War, so the Loot boxes are legitimately useless side Loot (you get legendary and epic orc captains with training boosts/skills for your orcs).
So, buy the game. Don’t buy the Loot boxes.
You get Mirian easily, and the lootboxes you open with the currency are still items and characters that you earned by playing the game. I wouldn't mind the market that much had it just been in-game currency, it would have just been a centralized place to get your gear. And even though they don't force you into buying any of the gold ones (nothing is locked behind them), and you also get them pretty easily, it's still scummy.
I have legendary gear an I haven't ever been to market. Plus yes your gear starts out at certain lvl an damage but that can be upgraded just like charcter

Finally making my way through it now (waited a while, because I wanted to upgrade my PC before playing), and it's a ton of fun.
There's a bunch of systems that seem excessive when it comes to equipment, but at the same time, it doesn't feel like a burden. The orcs carryign gems are everywhere over the map, and any time you get into a brawl, you're likely to kill at least one of those. And in general, giving your weapons a lifesteal bonus is a good way to offset the difficulty of being mobbed, since there's no armor stat to reduce incoming damage- all you can do is increase your HP.
There's more damage types now- poison is a much bigger deal, and your melee weapons can now do either poison, curse, fire or ice damage, and so can your magic powers. This means they can really tailor orcs to have different strengths or immunities, making more battles feels unique.
I'm only through Act I, but I've already had a ton of fun (and I'm probably seriously over-levelled, being at level 20, because I kinda ignored the story missions to hunt down all the collectibles and kill as many orcs as possible). There's a lot of variety here, and it's basically Shadow of Mordor, but better.
This game is clearly a test of future microtransactions. so if you buy this game it will send the message to WB that we are okay with them horrible lootboxes/microtransactions. dont buy it and ignore the game, so WB gets the message loud and clear!

Giving it a pass would also mean people would have an excuse to use it and Publishers to implement it in more games. Most Publishers don't refer to feedback, they simply respond to sales as its the only language they speak.

You did exactly what you would have done if their had been no micro transactions and that means that WB lost nothing from including them. all of those high review scores in their trailer makes me think that all of the major reviewers can't really be trusted. There's a lot of red flags with this game, and it really doesn't deserve the hype it's getting. If you haven't bought the game already, I suggest you don't until it goes on super sale and you can get the gold edition for $20. Trust me when I say that it's much easier to just deafen yourself to the game entirely and then just re-hype yourself when you eventually buy it on sale.
Also, I would have given it a 6/10; I feel a 7/10, which is a regular score, is too generous considering the number of faults this game has.
It's been known for years that 'game review' sites are generally paid off or just corporate shills in general. Most games that rub players the bad way and are universally despised can have very high score on review-sites. This is the main reason people like Angry Joe, Total Biscuit and many other game reviewers are trusted far beyond what the sites can hope for. In general, to me, site reviews means nothing anymore.

Only got round to buying this game a week ago and binge played it to completion an hour ago. I don’t know what the hate is sure it was tough at parts but never to the point where I even considered purchasing anything in the game. Loved the story, combat, soundtrack and locations. It wasn’t perfect but it was really enjoyable.
I know he was hating on things I loved, like shaming Orcs. There was this one orc I kept shaming he was the two-faced one. He came back from the dead, I recruited him and he betrayed me so I just kept shaming him. He even travel to a different map to fight me. I was going to shame him again but he accidentally died.

The problem was the final act. It was a lot of grinding to get to try final cut scene and clearly not a game development decision. When it got patched, the sole reason for loot boxes seized to exist but in this game, you really don't need them because they just aren't built into the game and now after they have been removed, it's just a great game and in my opinon one of the best third person action games on the market.
