@@dolphindudelife314lol this ain't nothing. I love Skyrim (not Vanilla - even at launch I thought it was a little too boring compared to Oblivion), but most of the major plot lines are under baked and unless you have quite a high tolerance for subpar gameplay loops, the dungeons are grating and IMO rely on big overhauls to the progression and/or combat systems in order to become genuinely satisfying for anyone who has played anything a little more refined.
However, I do still agree it's one of the best games ever. With mods, that is certain. Vanilla is highly debatable, and probably depends how much you will be annoyed by the very unrefined combat and major lack of any other well done gameplay elements (sneak, thievery, persuasion, choices matter) by RPG standards.
I think playing Baldurs Gate 3 is the perfect example of how genre defining a lot the things Skyrim practically ignored are.

As much as I enjoyed it at the time, Skyrim's biggest issue is that everything exists in a vacuum. Quests don't change anything about the world itself, even the main ones, and people don't acknowledge your accomplishments. Morrowind has problems of its own but beating the game removes an entire weather effect from the game and everyone refers to you as Nerevarine, most being in relative awe of your presence - and most having high dispositions towards you for saving the land. Maybe its nothing crazy but its something at least, and I don't think it would have been that difficult to have the NPCs refer to you as Dragonborn in a similar fashion. Or having Dragons fear you now instead of still just randomly appearing and divebombing you.

Not even being sent on some other errand to prove you aren't completely inept. Granted it's good in this one instance because getting a useful merchant with a cool story locked up forever is really stupid but still. My biggest gripe with this game has always been that there's no actual consequence to literally anything you do, there are never any stakes.

I'd rather it locked me out and made me press F9 than pander to the lowest common denominator. Skyrim's success is due to the fact that it's so forgiving that any meathead can succeed. I get it, but it completely misses the mark on what the classic western RPGs were going for. It was all about the interactivity with the world and its inhabitants that made up for the jank ass gameplay. Fallout 2 probably captured the essence of WRPGs the best.

Its skill tree system, however, does provide you with the ability to build your character however you please. And its exploration and world design are decent, as its original soundtrack. I'd say Skyrim is more deep than people give it credit for, but ultimately its story isn't winning any awards, and in a game that calls itself an RPG, having a general mediocre story and quests and mediocre presentation and reactivity didn't do it any favors.

Have to agree. I loved Skyrim had a blast when I did my "completionist run" where I did every quest and DLC. But after that there is nothing else. You go to replay it and nothing changes. And the guild quests are boring. I mean let's look at the Thieves guild. You earn you rank doing jobs, you don't just join them and get to do everything you do small jobs earning their trust, you build a rep among them, and then you meet the leader. In Skyrim you join them and they send you automatically on a job that the top members can't beat, you are the golden boy right from the get go. That's my problem with Skyrim, you are treated as a living god in the world, while in Oblivion you earn those ranks and treasure.

Or had some extra sidequests to help restore each faction to its former glory? And this might be ambitious, but what if you could only join one faction at a time and you could take part in some kind of power struggle between the other factions? Morrowind and Oblivion had a different levelling system entirely that used attributes instead of perks. The amount you could raise per level was determined by how many skills you raised prior to levelling up, meaning it was still possible to max out all attributes even with the level cap.
Skyrim, on the other hand, uses perks points for its levelling, and the amount of perk points you get per level is always fixed at one point. Since there are far more than 81 possible perks, it is impossible to max out your character.

You should be blaming TH-cam/Google instead of the content creators, especially guys like Salt who spend hours upon hours playing the titles and then writing scripts to go with em.

But then if you ACTUALLY wanna do all the guild has to do you have to do 125 to unlock all the trophies on the shelf and finally a safe near the desk. You could also spice it up with the well loved "No Stone Unturned" quest as it is somewhat part of the guild's quests.

Plus I've added mods to increase difficulty, deadly dragons on insane with 600% health. It takes an eternity to kill fkin dragons. And they do massive dmg. Even with master enchanted gear, magic res cap, armor cap and potions that heal for 500hp. Thunderbolt that does like 800dmg when dual casted, at 0 cost. It still takes me 15 minutes to kill 1 dragon. And it'll take me like 4 tries lmao. Still, the original comments point isn't valid. Stories are inherently about special people. There are billions of stories of people doing normal things, the ones that are told are of jesus, of the messiah, of emperor's. Special people who did special things. Every elder scrolls character is inherently going to be a Jesus character, because that's the point. If you wanna role play as a Joe schmo who hunts all day just to meet ends meat, and never does anything special. The game gives you the liberty to do that too, I have several characters that never join a guild, and spend their entire playthrough hunting, dungeon diving and nothing else. Eventually I retire the playthrough and in my head I say, "They met their end like hundreds before them, without name or story." In my head many of my characters are the dead adventurers you find in Skyrim. They're people who reached for something they couldn't attain because they weren't special enough, sadly.

One thing I found that made skyrim feel deeper as a new gamer but shallow as I matured, was that all the locations are accessible. You could walk through a dungeon and just hit a point you can't pass because you never started a quest, or worse finish it and then have to come back 10 mins later and find one item in one chest

    • @Shadethewolfy

While in Morrowind, because every quest item in the game is manually placed in the world (well, with the exception of one: The Bone-Biter Bow is carried by the Wraith at the end of the Caverns but the wraith is set to always spawn anyway) you can, if you're willing to venture into high-level areas, completely sequence break a LOT of the quests. If you enter some dungeons early enough, the enemies will even be different because you haven't triggered the quests that spawn them (with the exception of the Wraith of Suul Senipul, of course. And I assume the Ash Vampire that holds Sunder.)|
      Morrowind sequence breaking is WILD.

the issue with Skyrim’s guilds is Todd Howard’s game design philosophy of trying to make the player feel as powerful as possible as quickly as possible. that’s why you become the guild leader so quickly, and it’s why every guild has some kind of supernatural spiritual destiny shit. the stories are rushed in order to make you leader and force gods and magic into places they shouldn’t be, creating an environment where no questline can have its own personality, or storylines that fit

It also produces a weird mental whiplash as a sideeffect. Like, i can leave Helgen, go to Whiterun, haven't even killed my first Dragon yet, take the carriage to Winterhold because i want to be a mage.
2 hours later, your scrawny little scrub PC who has just reached Level 10 and dies when that Bandit over there looks at him funny is made the Archmage of the College for no particular reason other than that your predeccessor suddenly died and your superiors, who by all accounts would have a much more rightful claim to that position, eat the biggest humblepie in the cosmos. It just doesn't make any sense, even when you take all the sidecontent into account. It makes roleplaying as anything but a sellsword completely impossible (oh, the irony).
The biggest tragedy about Skyrim to me is that the really interesting stuff is hidden away, almost as if the developers were a bit ashamed of it or bullied by someone to make it less accessible.

It's also what makes this game so appealing to many, because this design allows for a really effortless gameplay loop. There is no struggle (unless you choose to up the difficulty which makes everyone hit harder and yourself hit less hard), at any moment you can just press on without having to give a shit about HOW you wanna play. You just do whatever you want, and you'll succeed. It's incredibly convenient and you really don't ever alienate the broader audience, because you can still enjoy it as long as you turn off your brain. It's basically the sitcom of gaming. You just sit there and relax.
It's just a product that isn't meant for players to truly engage with, and that sucks for those who would love to have more depth in a game that has so much potential.

  • @joshuakim5240
    @joshuakim5240 ปีที่แล้ว +3

There's one thing that, the more that i think about it, really goes to highlight how shoddily and lazily written Skyrim is as a story:
Alduin and the dragons have zero effect on anything other than a couple of throwaway lines. Nearly every quest goes the same way to the point where if the dragons were removed, very little would actually change. Surprisingly little, in fact. Hell, Alduin is such an inconsequential threat that ignoring him is generally considered to be the most entertaining way to play the game because he neither does, says, nor interacts with anything of any relevance. Fighting him is also weird because the whole point is to prevent him from eating the world, but he didn't even want to do that until the player teams up with his brother to beat him into getting salty enough to finally try so he's actually not doing what everyone wants him to not do.
In other words, Alduin is of no threat. And that could have been a VERY interesting story premise. What if Alduin was a morally grey character who refused to eat the world for its proper reset all those millennia ago due to, i don't know, loving the world he inhabited and thinking that it didn't deserve to be erased? What if he was resurrecting the dragons to just revive his extinct race with no plans of domination, and a twist of the main story would be that a huge chunk of people's assumptions about him were just plain wrong? Imagine if there was some kind of stagnation going on due to the world not having been reset for too long, and that the story was about forcing Alduin to do his fated job or else Tamriel would stagnate and rot to the point where another kalpa cycle couldn't happen. Initially this stagnation would be blamed as part of Alduin's return, only to later find out that Alduin is actually the cure to this but said cure is existence itself being reset as Alduin's lore foretells. What if Paarthurnax throughout his countless years of meditation realized that Alduin was needed for Tamriel to be reborn properly for the new cycle to flourish, and the player's path could choose either fighting a soul-starved Alduin like in the current game, or fighting Paarthurnaax whose hopped up on tons of souls? The story would be about sacrifice for the next generation or clinging to one's current deteriorating condition at the expense of the next generation, and the player would have tons of reason to cling not go with the big reset due to accruing money, power, property, family, and prestige but knows that having it is just feeding into the deterioration of a world that is way long-overdue for cycling.
Even Alduin's own character would reflect this dilemma, as him being the ruler of the Dragon Cult made him very clingy and obsessed with preserving the era he created at the expense of those under him. He'd still be kind of an asshole, but the kind that player characters who hoard things would logically be as a bit of a meta reflection. It would be cool if choosing to force Alduin to eat and reset the world would just end the playthrough, but siding with him not to do that would allow endless playing, but with things deteriorated much further.

Playing Skyrim in 2011 blew my mind. Playing it in 2023 makes me realise just how bad the writing is, not that the game is completely without merit.
They focus so much on a big, beautiful world to explore and forget to make any quest or faction motivations make sense or any decisions have any consequence

Skyrim in a nutshell: "We USED to be thriving! But we've hit a bit of a rough patch. A bit down on our luck! You've proven you can kill a draugr and the bandit, you're now our new leader."

that's probably the dolled up fantasy version of what the writing team says to the interns that shit out 3 lines of dialogue for a quest.

Honestly this, you compare that to Oblivion and you join the fighters guild when they're getting destroyed by blackwood which you help turn around. Dark brotherhood is at the height of it's power and follow its destruction and rebirth, the thieves guild is business as usual and you help it reach higher glory, and the mages guild is business as usual but you go through and watch it fail and be reborn.
Oblivion is a flawed game to be sure, but that is so much better than, theives guild is dying, dark brotherhood is dying, companions are dying and only you can save them harbingerlistenernightingale.

    • @Grandmaster_Dragonborn
      @Grandmaster_Dragonborn 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not really:
The Companions showed no signs of having hit a rough patch, neither did The Dark Brotherhood, Nightingales, or Imperials,
In fact their rough patches come during the actual story.

@@Grandmaster_Dragonborn You're kidding right? It's stated the Brotherhood has been nearly wiped out. And Cicero points out how Astrid has led the group away from being followers of Sithis, and turned them into run of the mill murderers. And the thieves guild hang out in sewers, with no real influence outside of Riften, unless they're acting as Maven's enforcers.

    • @Grandmaster_Dragonborn

@@Rusty126 No I ain’t kidding, all I got was the indication that the clan had changed but wasn’t failing.
Cicero’s observation doesn’t signify a fall from grace; the Brotherhood is just that; run of the mill murderers, nothing more or less, hence why i took joy in wiping them out.
And that’s another difference: You can actually choose to kill an entire faction instead of joining it.
That’s what I call breaking the formula :)
And yes the thieves guilt is just that, hence why I didn’t mention them.
But clearly, not all the quest lines are just you do this (kill some draugr) and then you become the leader, most are different enough to keep it fresh.

I thought it was kinda stupid how in most (if not all) towns, the Khajiit are seen as thieves and undesirables for the most part, hence why they always have to set up shop outside of towns inside of inside them, but yet...if you are playing as a Khajiit, they basically let you into the town like any other race.

I never liked the early decision between running with the Stormcloaks or the Legion. Firstly, if you are not familiar with the other games/lore you will have no idea what the hell a Legion is but Stormcloaks are rebels so you get the idea quickly. Secondly, the choice is not between The Man and The Rebels; the choice is between "we literally just tried to kill you after acknowledging that you were innocent" and "hey, remember us from the back of the execution cart?" I know the choice is completely unimportant but I always felt that going the Legion at the beginning is so breathtakingly dumb, like the Dragonborn is just going to be asking Hadvar "is it my turn on the block yet?"
