    One of the reasons this game feels shallow is that they didn't add content expanding the Cloud District in Whiterun. Do you guys get to the Cloud District very often? Oh what am I saying, of course you don't.

    Honestly one of Skyrims big flaws is that after a while the dragons become tedious. Like when you hear a dragon roar your reaction isn't to get excited and go "OH boy a dragon!" or even get scared and go "Oh no! A dragon!" Your reaction is to sigh and say "Goddammit, I'm not in the mood for a dragon right now"

      I remember thinking one time after hearing a dragon roar, "Fuck, I don't have the carry capacity for bones and scales right now, dammit." Dragons were just a chore.

      Yep. They over did the spawnrates on those fucking things.
      Honestly, there should have been less mounds, maybe a couple random spawns like 1 every in game week or two or something. And actually make dragons more fucking interesting fight.
      Even when I did my Master difficulty run (fuck legendary, that's just ball ache for ball aches safe) by the time I was like 25-30, Dragons still just became a run up and mash R1 fight.

      After hearing the guy say I can join the thieves guild even after screwing up the main quest because "you tried your best and youre proabably a good thief anyway" and seeing that the bards guild had nothing to do with playing an instrument, singing, etc. and all just fetch linear dungeon fetch quests, I was done. @@dolphindudelife314lol this ain't nothing. I love Skyrim (not Vanilla - even at launch I thought it was a little too boring compared to Oblivion), but most of the major plot lines are under baked and unless you have quite a high tolerance for subpar gameplay loops, the dungeons are grating and IMO rely on big overhauls to the progression and/or combat systems in order to become genuinely satisfying for anyone who has played anything a little more refined.
      However, I do still agree it's one of the best games ever. With mods, that is certain. Vanilla is highly debatable, and probably depends how much you will be annoyed by the very unrefined combat and major lack of any other well done gameplay elements (sneak, thievery, persuasion, choices matter) by RPG standards.
      I think playing Baldurs Gate 3 is the perfect example of how genre defining a lot the things Skyrim practically ignored are.

And the guild quests are boring. I mean let's look at the Thieves guild. You earn you rank doing jobs, you don't just join them and get to do everything you do small jobs earning their trust, you build a rep among them, and then you meet the leader. In Skyrim you join them and they send you automatically on a job that the top members can't beat, you are the golden boy right from the get go. That's my problem with Skyrim, you are treated as a living god in the world, while in Oblivion you earn those ranks and treasure.

    the issue with Skyrim’s guilds is Todd Howard’s game design philosophy of trying to make the player feel as powerful as possible as quickly as possible. that’s why you become the guild leader so quickly, and it’s why every guild has some kind of supernatural spiritual destiny shit. the stories are rushed in order to make you leader and force gods and magic into places they shouldn’t be, creating an environment where no questline can have its own personality, or storylines that fit

      It also produces a weird mental whiplash as a sideeffect. Like, i can leave Helgen, go to Whiterun, haven't even killed my first Dragon yet, take the carriage to Winterhold because i want to be a mage.
      2 hours later, your scrawny little scrub PC who has just reached Level 10 and dies when that Bandit over there looks at him funny is made the Archmage of the College for no particular reason other than that your predeccessor suddenly died and your superiors, who by all accounts would have a much more rightful claim to that position, eat the biggest humblepie in the cosmos. It just doesn't make any sense, even when you take all the sidecontent into account. It makes roleplaying as anything but a sellsword completely impossible (oh, the irony).
      The biggest tragedy about Skyrim to me is that the really interesting stuff is hidden away, almost as if the developers were a bit ashamed of it or bullied by someone to make it less accessible.

      It's also what makes this game so appealing to many, because this design allows for a really effortless gameplay loop. There is no struggle (unless you choose to up the difficulty which makes everyone hit harder and yourself hit less hard), at any moment you can just press on without having to give a shit about HOW you wanna play. You just do whatever you want, and you'll succeed. It's incredibly convenient and you really don't ever alienate the broader audience, because you can still enjoy it as long as you turn off your brain. It's basically the sitcom of gaming. You just sit there and relax.

      Like how cool would it be if you could, say, summon mages or assassins to help you in combat? Or get special persuasion options in dialog based on the faction you now control? Or had some extra sidequests to help restore each faction to its former glory? And this might be ambitious, but what if you could only join one faction at a time and you could take part in some kind of power struggle between the other factions? Just, if Bethesda is gonna make it that easy to become a guild leader, at least make it an early part of the guild experience, not its endgame for god's sake.

    The game was AMAZING to play like HALF of my first play through. It was so cool having such a massive open world, and it was super cool to discover all of these locations and random things. Then, after you get to the halfway point, you start to realize that the quests are just boring rehashes of previous quests (just dressed up differently). While I did replay it once or twice, there wasn’t really much replay value. Boring, repetitive fetch quests and your choices having no meaning on the world around you ended up making the game very, very shallow.
    That first half of my first play through was MAGICAL tho- I will say that!

      It kinda always bothered me how that’s never brought up. Personally I think it would’ve been much more impactful if the assassins that attack you were actually relevant to the plot in some way. Not directly, cause they’re dead, but they could’ve been friends with other members or the brotherhood. And you killed them. Just that alone could create animosity, especially once it’s revealed that you are the listener.
      “This random person whose killed some of our own is to be our leader?? Outrageous.”
      There could be a branching path (and actual branching path and not the garbage choice we ended up with) where on one hand you never gain the trust of your guild mates and are forced to flee and help destroy them. Or you can eventual endear yourself to them to the point where they develop a begrudging respect towards you..... and god I just wish the quests in this game made more sense and were better.

You can see it in the individual characters, like Babette using her vampire powers to seduce men to kill them (which also justifies it because they're pedophiles... even though her magical vampire powers make them into pedophiles in the first place) or the fact that no Argonians are born in October anymore apparently.
      Plus it can't be too dark or it'd be morally grey, or even make the player feel like a bad guy! No no, you have to target bad guys yourself and be a bunch of happy jokers so you don't feel bad about being an evil assassin. Probably the guards. So having a contact in various city guards makes sense, and it's not like the Brotherhood is afraid of talking about their killings.

Even with master enchanted gear, magic res cap, armor cap and potions that heal for 500hp. Thunderbolt that does like 800dmg when dual casted, at 0 cost. It still takes me 15 minutes to kill 1 dragon. And it'll take me like 4 tries lmao. Still, the original comments point isn't valid. Stories are inherently about special people. There are billions of stories of people doing normal things, the ones that are told are of jesus, of the messiah, of emperor's. Special people who did special things. Every elder scrolls character is inherently going to be a Jesus character, because that's the point. If you wanna role play as a Joe schmo who hunts all day just to meet ends meat, and never does anything special. The game gives you the liberty to do that too, I have several characters that never join a guild, and spend their entire playthrough hunting, dungeon diving and nothing else. Eventually I retire the playthrough and in my head I say, "They met their end like hundreds before them, without name or story." In my head many of my characters are the dead adventurers you find in Skyrim. They're people who reached for something they couldn't attain because they weren't special enough, sadly.

    • @Robert399
      @Robert399 4 ปีที่แล้ว +57

      @@TheHarcipoter It's not that clear-cut. You need to remember:
      1) You can overshoot and lose popularity and, for some reason, game companies never seen to realise until they've done it. Even ignoring 76, Fallout 4 got a lukewarm reception compared to Skyrim, Fallout 3 and Oblivion, despite its sales.
      2) Sales and expectations are based, to some extent, on previous entries, especially with pre-order culture. Fans take time to fall out of love with a series and review scores tend to be anchored but the damage is still being done, even if you don't see it fully until 2-3 games down the line.
      Anecdotally, I'd say Bethesda's acclaim and popularity peaked in the Oblivion to early Skyrim years. After Fallout 4, years of Skyrim re-releases highlighting its flaws and, of course, 76, I'd say Bethesda is on the verge of irrelevance. If Starfield isn't great, I don't think anyone will care what they do after that.

    As much as I enjoyed it at the time, Skyrim's biggest issue is that everything exists in a vacuum. Quests don't change anything about the world itself, even the main ones, and people don't acknowledge your accomplishments. Morrowind has problems of its own but beating the game removes an entire weather effect from the game and everyone refers to you as Nerevarine, most being in relative awe of your presence - and most having high dispositions towards you for saving the land. Maybe its nothing crazy but its something at least, and I don't think it would have been that difficult to have the NPCs refer to you as Dragonborn in a similar fashion. Or having Dragons fear you now instead of still just randomly appearing and divebombing you.

I don't hate it because it's trendy to do so I just genuinely don't see anything to like about it. The combat is meaningless and it never feels like anything is making contact. The main plot is shallow and boring, the sidequests are linear and uninteresting. The world feels like nobody gave a fuck, I mean does no one in Skyrim know what magic is? It feels like besides the College of Winterhold you're the only person with access, such as prisons not bothering to restrict your use of it. Animations are some of the worst I've ever seen. The graphics are dated and kinda shit, even for the time, the game hardly even runs cause it's held together by tape and spit.     The dumbest part of the factions/guilds in skyrim summed up;
    Legion/Stormcloaks - Has specific ranks you can climb with no uniforms or weapons between standard armour and bear skin for a officer. But nobody treats you differently. You might as well be a mercenary. Real stupid is there are clearly made separate armours you could give for ranks in both factions.
    Theives guild - "Hey, You saved our guild, avenged our leader, saved multiple guild members personally, cleared the name of a old member, removed our curse and restored our relationship with nocturnal AND rebuilt the Nightingale.... But you cant become a guild master until you steel some fancy gold cup and we get a fruit stand in the sewer."
    Companions - "Hey! You're new! You suck!" *2 quests later* "Dont think you're something, you still suck!" *2 more quests* "Honor! Harbinger! You rock!"
    Vampires - "We dont understand that in the long run we are REALLY shooting ourselves in the foot"
    Dawnguard - "Alot of Skyrim tell you that we are just the same ol mercenaries from the stories. And they're right. We really suck, basic vampires make it to the gates of our castle, and we get our asses kicked in every battle we're in."
    College - "Hey, We know you know only one spell that we had to show you to enter, and you literally just shot everything with a bow or stabbed it 50 times, but we are making you the magical colleges head wizard. You dont have to do anything, you just get this sick ass bath robe and some bling"
    Dark brotherhood - "Go kill these people. Talk to guy. Kill this guy. Kill this guy in certain place. Kill this woman. Kill funny old guy. Somewhat decent betrayal you totally didnt see coming. Constant kill quests with fancy ice player home"
    I can keep going, like how the Blades are a entirely useless faction that can be taken out of the game because you can easily just talk with the old mountain guys, then they have the audacity to ask you to kill one of the few genuinely useful NPC's to the quest line.

Dark brotherhood is at the height of it's power and follow its destruction and rebirth, the thieves guild is business as usual and you help it reach higher glory, and the mages guild is business as usual but you go through and watch it fail and be reborn.
      Oblivion is a flawed game to be sure, but that is so much better than, theives guild is dying, dark brotherhood is dying, companions are dying and only you can save them harbingerlistenernightingale.

      And that’s another difference: You can actually choose to kill an entire faction instead of joining it.
      That’s what I call breaking the formula :)
      And yes the thieves guilt is just that, hence why I didn’t mention them.

      Her thinking could be, all Paarthurnax wanted was alduin to be defeated, as only the dragonborn could.
      Theres also another line of thinking, in that no longer being tested even if he is good a single lapse over a span of time that is an eternity is all it would take to undo Paarthurnax. And perhaps at one time he would fear his brethren or alduin and a power grab would be shut down but with the most powerful dovah being a mortal who will eventually die he could be tempted.
      I just wish we were given more of a choice and more of an exploration of that idea.

      @@noahboddie3482 I'm fully aware of this "opinion" and though, as you already mentioned, Bethesda didn't care much about the depth of it IMO. E.g. it is obvious that without Paarthurnax dragonborn would have had hard time to ebat Alduin. Paarthurnax has huge knowledge which he is willing to share for the time being. Skyrim is pretty much ruined from all sorts of problems. Killing one more dragon, which at that time is actully pretty helpful in solving those problems is utter nonsense. Even more so that the Blades, who again are HELPERS and FOLLOWERS of the dragonborn all of a sudden put themselves above him putting him into this "either you kill him or us" situation. Like wtf? Have Blades done ALL of their jobs, solved ALL of their problems, gained enough strength and power, just so shortly after their rebuilt to press on the dragonborn already?
      The only reason for killing Paarthurnax is that SOMETIME, MAYBE he MIGHT get hostile and powerhungry - that is problem # 689 while Skyrim is at solving the problem # 14 (or something). Paarthurnax is in fact a very helpful ally atm. There just should have been the option for "let us settle down and build up since times are peaceful atm as they EVER have been". And maybe like 10 quests later after you see how much influence the Blades got you should have gotten the option "we are very strong now and Paarthurnax is now rather a threat then a help to Skyrim. Aldmeri dominion, stormcloaks and empire want to dominate too not just dragons, but can you say all humans and elves are bad? Grandmaster Paarthunax like all greybeards are not choosing any sides. They live in silence and in meditation.

    Playing Skyrim in 2011 blew my mind. Playing it in 2023 makes me realise just how bad the writing is, not that the game is completely without merit.
    They focus so much on a big, beautiful world to explore and forget to make any quest or faction motivations make sense or any decisions have any consequence

    I really enjoyed Skyrim to start, but you were able to define what made me unable to complete the game. I'd become a magic, stealth, archer, combat, armour God before I quit, but I couldn't play to the end. Also, a lot of game breaking bugs made me extremely frustrated. The lack of diversity in tombs started to drive me nuts and I kept wishing for something more than yet another Nordic tomb with the same old enemies, and boring puzzles.

      Download as many Enai Saion mods as possible
      Boom changed skill trees. Hundreds of new ways to play and multiple hours of replay value.
      The wildcat combat mod completely changes the combat system. Both you and the enemies are now fighting for your life. You can be destroyed in like 4 hits if you aren't careful. Even with 200+ armour and a shield and one handed focused builds. I can still get my ass handed to me if I'm not careful. Because of this mod I completely focused levelling up alchemy for the 1st ever time. In order to buff myself to as strong levels as possible and to fit my healing requirement cause of how much damage enemies can do. And even that's still not enough
      Even with all that difficulty. It is seriously fun. Because it's a new experience
      Especially the mod shown at 10:17. An Enaisaion mod

    Skyrim is what I imagine it would be like if you actually got isekaied into a real videogame world, like a REAL videogame world. You can do whatever you want, learn magic, become a sword fighter blah blah blah. But everyone in the world only has three scripted lines they cycle through and nothing you do meaningfully changes the world because the npcs are only allowed to follow their programed paths.
    It's an existential nightmare.

    That dark brotherhood quest where you kill the girl at the wedding can be more complicated then just sneak up behind during speech and whack with mace.
    There is a bow across the courtyard so you could shoot her and run.
    The gargoyle above is loose, and could be pushed on her to kill her.
    If your a magic user you can cast frenzy on her husband to be and watch him kill her.
    So many better options

    • @theccarbiter
      @theccarbiter 4 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Yeah but the game doesnt incentivize any of those options. It's better to just kill her as quick and soon as possible cause you dont get any other special reward if you do it in a creative way.

    • @theccarbiter
      @theccarbiter 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Grunt ELCAN man idk why youre reading into a critisism too much "oh whats the point of anything cause were gonna die" isnt a valid argument. In oblivion if I killed the target a different way then I would be rewarded for such but I didnt have to so the game makes it clear that the main goal is for the contract to be complete but the different ways you can accomplish that contract and for a bonus incentivizes using the other more creative and immersive options where I can feel like an assassin that always goes that extra step and feel like it's not unnoticed that I'm so faithful to what the contract is asking or I could be an assassin that doesnt mind if a few extra people die or sure the contract wasnt followed step by step but the guy is dead and thats what matters so I dont expect a greater reward for sloppy work. Skyrim doesnt care about any of this and just sends you somewhere to kill someone for the same reward every time and they are pretty much the same as those bounty quests you can get at any inn in skyrim. The reason I am doing the dark brotherhood questline is to feel like an assassin not a mercenary so of course I'd want contracts that are planned out and not just "we found a guy living in the middle of nowhere go kill him and dont worry you wont get a bounty" you even said im technically right when i say whats the point in using the creative way in that one contract but then go on to ask whats the point in playing the questline anyway. The point in playing the questline is to feel like an assassin and I, and many others, dont feel like an assassin when I kill someone of significance by literally walking up to them during a speech and attacking them then taking out 50 guards and being told I'm one of the best assassins there are despite everyone having seen me and killing 50 extra people (an obvious embellishment but you get the idea) but hey I could've hit the rocks to kill her right but nothing would have changed I'd still be the best assassin and I can't think of one other assassination where this option occurs. I'm not saying the rock option shouldn't be there I'm saying it should be the better option but as far as the game goes, it;s not and it is by far the worst option which it shouldn't be, in fact it really should be the only option because a great assassin wouldnt walk up to someone and kill them during a speech they would use rocks but the game doesnt send that message it tells you that you made the right option no matter what option you made and that's why it's pointess to use the rocks because its the same thing as walking up to her and killing her in front of everyone.
