You don't need a dual voltage alternator, just run a 24v alternator and use a step down transformer to run and charge the 12v system. I have a friend with a crane service and he has numerous cranes ranging in size from 40 ton to 120 ton and I was tasked with bringing them into carb compliance and the easiest way was swapping in complete powertrains from newer trucks and we went with 600hp isx15 engines. The cranes have both 12 and 24 volt electrical systems and for simplicity I chose to run a 24v alternator on the engine and use a 24v to 12v converter.
Curious about the transformer you used for this? What was the output on it?

Those Cummins isx engines are work horses and have so much torque it's nuts.
@@mikeshultz1007 damn, available in up to a 100A model. That's definitely a lot simpler. Even if you're running 12v winches (high current demand) you'd be able to use the Eaton as a "charger" to 12v batteries, which runs the winch.

I think Alan should leave it at his own serenity, a place he can say he truly built himself. I think its part of the reason he has built the whole thing.

Love Zion - he is an excellent example of the breed, and a great example of how early training makes any large dog much easier to live with. I have a young English Mastiff as my baby, who is also about 200 pounds at 2 years old. Started training at 8 weeks, he already has his Companion Dog obedience title and has been certified as a service dog.
Allen is such a good addition to the crew, seems like such a genuine guy with an awesome attitude👌👌
From watching the last video, for the front bumper I'd suggest something where you can add weights. Like what you see on farm tractors. So that you can keep the front down and be able to steer while towing.
Lot of work with weights, possibly extra equipment. BUT... ships pump water for ballast, why couldn't a HEMTT? Tank up front, tank in the back, fill it with open cell foam so it won't slosh, size each tank for 15-20 cubic feet and you could shuttle around 900 to 1200 pounds for whatever load or condition needed. 150GPM pump would take a minute for full transfer.

Frame really isn't made for it usually, now 1200 lb is probably not an issue for it but also probably isn't enough. I know on tow trucks if you lift the front wheels off the ground then you are putting too much stress in the frame. That's kind of what happened when he broke this. 1200 lb on the front bumper would be probably an extra 4,000 lb or so of force at the front of the tow bed.

I just had to put him down last Christmas Eve. Samson had the same personality as Zion. Super loving to me and my family. Love that you have trained him so well. I worked hard with mine also. Several 6 week session of obedience training. He was the best first dog I could have ever had. Makes me tear up seeing Zion remembering my boy.

You guys are doing some serious work, love it. In college I used to deliver all the bolts for the largest large wrecker manufacturing plant in world (Miller - TN). They used SAE Grade 8 bolts/lock washers/nuts on attaching the boom to the frame. Those bolts at 22:10 don’t look like Grade 8’s. Grade 8 bolts have a higher tensile strength, have 6 lines on hex head, and a yellow zinc finish. If I remember right Miller used 3/4” or 7/8” diameter Grade 8’s. You guys probably know all this about bolt types, but to help distinguish, Grade 5 bolts are not as hard (hey o), have three lines on head, and are silvery zinc coated or plain carbon. Grade 2 bolts have no markings on top, and we sold them without coatings. There is a Grade 9 that exists, although i don’t remember us (Fastenal) supplying any of these.
These bolts were sheared so idk what bolt is the most proper. Most of the time The tensile and shear strength are not directly correlated.
grade 8's have more strength vertically but 5 and 6,s have more shear strength horizontally
@@BLOODNUT You hit that reply right on the head...As a electric overhead crane inspector I have never seen grade 8 bolts from the manufacture on general use cranes.
We use a 3’ or so composite pad for each outrigger at work which have held up way better then I would have expected. For hairyer shit and out of grade we use swap pads made out of RR ties/bridge ties, we drill through em and hold together with cable and cable clamps. I think for what you guys do those would work really well! Outrigger cribbing isn’t supposed to have creosote In them if I remember correctly however.
Watched you guys helping Adventures with a Purpose. Both do such good work all volunteer. It is so good to see good and not bad. We need more people doing good for the country.
Just bypass the wood pads, they do work but they cup out really bad after a few heavy loads. We used the nylon pads under an rt crane and they were awesome. Little bit of flex but sprung right back, had rope carry handles on them and were half the weight of the wood ones.
Alan is super interesting! Glad to see him stick around you guys gotta make more videos at his compound. All his vehicles and his compound! Especially his compound I mean he has a freakin mine under it!

Ive got a recommendation for the stiff legs, Instead of pads you could weld some big claws on the stiff legs and make the claws fit a railroad tie in them, Then put a railroad tie spanning both stiff legs under, the claws will sink into the railroad tie and that will sink into the ground, it will support the legs over a larger surface area but it will also give you resistance against moving front or back, pads will not do that so much, they will make it so the wrecker wants to slide around, pads are better for cranes or rotators where they are lifting the whole truck up for a solid platform and lifting the object more so than pulling it.
Also for the recoveries, like the crane when you are trying to flip something like that, don't use only the boom in the air to pull it upward, take those auxiliary winches and "spike" the vehicle by putting a snatch block low and hooking to something high on the vehicle you are flipping, that will pull downwards while the boom pulls the far side upward, allows for more pulling force, less load on the boom overall, etc.
Al's truck on Highway thru Hell has those hooks on his stabilizers.

Did you guys ever consider using skids on that crane out on the lake? Lift each side, insert a skid and drag it - I would hope it would be more manageable then dragging frozen tires through that muck

We have tried using skis/skids in the past on the great Salt Lake Lake lakebed and they do not work well because instead of gliding along easily like you would expect they instead create suction to the ground due to the increased surface area
@@HeavyDSparks If the flat surface had strakes(like a boat Hull )they possibly could work better ,trial and error,but you have tried which is commendable
What about a roller dolly with a wide foot print ,or a trailer dolly that rolls,that would work on the Dead loads you recover ?.also for the landing legs ,a large square log that is as wide as the truck ?

We've got a Belgian Malinios and she has a very similar temperament. The most difficult thing is dealing with strangers who think they can just run up and pet her. She's amazing with our kids even the baby.

Very few people with old school values such as yourself and it’s amazing seeing the way you and your crew pull it together and make anything possible.
In this show you you asked about material best suited under your outriggers. Well as a heavy wrecker operator of over ten yrs as well as 15 additional yrs as a small to med duty wrecker and car carrier operator:…..it goes without saying that he harder the wood the better, the best I have found for use in any weather or situation as well as durability I highly recommend tiverton blocks. Not only the best bang for your buck, you won’t be disappointed with the way this material reacts in any situation.

The intro with the doggo and Al went perfectly (you could kinda tell there wasn't going to be an issue as doggo was looking at Al wagging his tail, had doggo been looking at him with a straight tail or commonly known as "alert" definitely been a different story. Question after watching the last related video - Not familiar with these lake beds, could D use some sort of sled/skid to drag the old crane on? Must be better than the crane wheels/chassis digging into the surface making everything harder, slower and less efficient.
Former obedience trainer here. You do the introductions the other way around. Set the dog securely, walk up to them with the other person grab the other person's hand between your hands and offer your hands together while saying something like he is okay. I'll even rub other people's hands between mine to Cinemark them, then offer them both our hands

cranes I've worked with used both plastic pads and wood pads, I think it came down to what was available when then needed them. they all had an off center hole, and at the back there was a round bar they slid on, then a pin at the end to hold the pads on the truck. they also packed a bunch of cribbing for leveling the crane between the 5 outriggers.
Mastiffs are amazing! I have a 140lb 4yr old Cane Corso now and had a 160 Daniff before her. Training is key!!!! Such beautiful dogs that are very smart and very protective, all the more reason to properly integrate them with new human introductions.
We have two Cane pups!! Aren’t they the absolute best? So intelligent & pick up on every emotion plus they are beautiful. Ours are 2 1/2 yrs & they are our kids, lol. Have a great weekend!
I Have had Mastiffs all my life, I currently have a Dogue de Bordeaux. They are amazing Pets. You can see in That Heavy D loves his Dog. But the only thing that pissed me off was having his Dog in the Bed of His Truck and not Secured. When i see People that rave on about how much they love their Dog and then do this I am just Dumbfounded.

I couldn't live with out my Boerboel Odyn. You don't see too many with a full tail! He acts the same way aside from jumping in the truck on command! These are the BEST family dogs and protectors. A dog that will truly love you til death if treated right. Training is a must with a dog of this size and ability. They have become incredibly popular and for good reason but I am afraid of owners with lack of experience in giant independent breeds. These dogs will take matters in to their own paws. @heavydsparks you got an amazing man there!
I used to drill water wells, did one in Midvale, sandy, Ogden. We use what they call " maining boards" timbers cut the length of the drill rig cause we have the out riggers all around the rig to keep it 90° to the ground. Maining boards would give your out riggers the advantage of keeping your tow bed attached to the frame. Just sayin. Big fan, keep up the awesome work.
Great vid about how you "broke" the Het lol , it did twang a bit .. (seen all 3 now this plus the 2 recovery ) just goes to show how easy it is to break something regardless how huge it is . Great content worth watching .

mastiff's are the most lovable dogs i have a 9.5 year old female that weighs about 140 pounds . As happy as these guys are to meet new people these pups are just gentle giants. but can be great security dogs . Mine wouldn't hurt a fly but she will certainly protect who she has too . keep up the good work guys cant wait to see more content and hopefully more of your pupper

With the expressed aggressiveness potential of the dog I am surprised he is left unrestrained in the open bed of a pickup while driving around.
I have a 185 lb French/English Mastiff. He rides in the back weather permitting. It is far safer for him and my children. Imagine him flying around the cab in an accident 😳. And before you tell me to harness him in seat restraints I invite you to come show me how its done!
@Cory Lovely they make harnesses for this very thing. Or at the very least a crate strapped in to the box.

@Michiel OSH most shock collars do more than just shock, I have to use one for my St bermastiff as well, it beeps and does a vibrate as well, most the time u just have to do the beep, or the vibrate for our boy is actually more effective than the shock... its a lot better than not being able to control in a time where u absolutely have to get him to stop doing what he is without someone getting hurt

Just wannabe know it alls on the internet thinking they know what they're talking about. first off they don't hurt the dog like they do humans. that shock collar is necessary in it's training. or would you rather it freak out bite someone and be put to sleep for attacking a human? You think you train every breed of dog the same you can train a golden retriever??? Lmfao get real. There's a reason expert dog trainers still use them and there's a reason they're not outlawed and still sold. Because they're necessary in some situations. That is of course unless you want an aggressive dog that get's no love and just attacks everyone until it's eventually put to sleep.

A Boerbull [Pronounced, 'Boehr-bull', instead of Borbul. More the sound of the word 'look' than 'bore'] is a common family pet/guar-dog in South Africa among 'developed world' folks. They were used to hunt Lions and big-game in the days of old because of their weight, athleticism, bravery and incredible bite tenacity. The king of the Mastiffs. My niece grew up from birth to 10 years old with one and there was never a single incident with her, ever. Except for uninvited 'guests'. The neighborhood kids exercised the dog for years, by getting her to tow them on their skateboards :-)

Just a bit of advice. I worked on big bucket trucks for many years, doing tree work for the utility company. we had outriggers on our trucks. These trucks ranged from,35 ft squirt boom for trimming around the lower lines, 60/70 scissor lift, to 100 ft. boom. We removed and trimmed trees around the powerlines. The best outrigger pads we had; were the hard plastic pads they out lasted the wooden pads by far.
Really enjoy this type of content, but honestly all your content is great! Beautiful dog as well! Can't wait to see everything done on the HETT, it's gonna be amazing.
I do love Zion..he's the most gorgeous boy. We did 'meet' him at the house once - but I'd be rapt if we could see more of him. A bear of a dog for a bear of a man : ) I have a large breed, and I agree - training is essential, and "No, please don't pat my dog!" If he decides he doesn't like your scent it will hurt - and I'm not putting my dog down because of you!
Dogs also decide if someone is trustworthy (when they are with their owner), if their owner greets someone in a "happy" way or in a guarded way, this why when they are alone they tend to greet strangers warily and also become very protective towards their family (pack) if an unannounced stranger comes too close. Off course there are dogs that swing either way, Golden Labradors are always happy to see a new person and German Shepherds, never. This is basically down to breeding through. Dogs also understand words, they understand the meaning (positive or negative, friendly or threatening). My last dog understood two languages, Italian and English and responded in a like manner by doing what she was asked to told to do in either language.
Boerboels are great dogs. But the do have a reputation down here in South Africa.

For the outriggers on our fire service aerials, we used a 2'x2' aluminum plate with a hand-hold notched out of the one bent up edge and these just slide into a angle iron slot under the deck.

I've had two Boarboel Mastiffs and were my last dogs before my current one..
Great dog but short lifespans. The male lasted 1.5 years due to genetic issues and bit 5 people (nothing "serious".) The other one a female got joint pain around 2 years old. Eventually got so bad the dog couldn't stand up without yelping. She also bit a kid in the face. Dogs were socialized but the breed is very territorial. Not a dog for meeting people with that's for sure.
Hopefully your luck with large dog breeds is better than mine. I made the decison not certain breeds like that anymore because of health and short lifespans. It's my experience that any dog bred for size will almost certainly be unhealthy. My dog now is a Belgian Malinois.
Bigger they are the shorter they live . better getting a load of small little jack Russell's do the job and many eyes make for many mouths, and they hurt just as much..I love my jack pack.
Sadly yes, the big dogs do get joint issues. I'd say dont leg the dog jump in and out of thd bed of a truck too - major load on his joints.
Pure breeds tend to get health issues to. A mixed breed medium dog should last and have good health.
You just explained precisely why breeds like this shouldn't exist. It's our fault for making such an awful breed.
Unfortunately most large dogs are bred for their aesthetics or a singular personality trait rather than their suitability for a job these days, which has a huge impact on their genetic susceptibility to health problems. Any dog can develop health issues during their life, but we need to stop accepting that a shortened lifespan and high-probability genetic & behavioural issues are prices our furry companions should pay for _our_ convenience & vanity.
Your dog is gorgeous! Always been into the bully breeds, I've got two olde English bulldog/Staffordshire mixes. Nicest, most kind dogs around children, but if you decide to break into the house, its over lol!!!
And props to you for taking him to work and doing stuff with him. Most people with these types of dogs never take them anywhere.
My best dog was a Chow-Shepard-StBernard female. We were telepathic. She would detect with her senses, then look at me for direction. Great with kids.

I heard you mention the name whelen for lighting have you ever consider trying another brand by the name of sound off signal? The shop I manage installs thousands of sound off lights a year (we build alot of police and first responder vehicles) and there output is incredible. They feature a silicone lense so there 100% chip and crack resistant no matter the temperature outside they remain pliable.
Tomar is way better.
As a diesel mechanic who works on wreckers I recommend wood or metal plate because we have a few rotators with the plastic ones and in offered conditions they fold, flex, and will not hold up a whole lot of weight
When you all figure out how to run that truck properly, it's going to be incredible.
Also you need some boxed claws for those stiff legs, check out the stuff IrishIronWrecker is building for an example.

They could have done this recovery with snatch blocks and proper use of the winches without breaking the truck. A bigger tool isn't the answer if you don't know how to use it properly in the first place. There's no disrespect to Dave or the crew here, you don't know what you don't know, now if it keeps happening then it's a training issue they choose not to address.

I have seen cranes use the round parts from old wire spools for out rigger pads. They are pretty tough and basically free. 500mcm wire comes on spools about 4ft. diameter. They make good outdoor tables also
Beautiful dog! Just a heads up if he is a registered dog with the AKC you could get busted for him being lose in the back of a open truck. My wife tells me this quite often. We have show collies. Really enjoy your videos.

Heck! When I was a kid, me and my brother used to ride in the back of Dad's pickup when ever he would let us, it was fun!
Having a dog restrained in some way while travelling in the back of a pickup/ute/truck is important for safety - both for the dogs and the humans around them. In Australia they've made it a law because there were people & dogs being injured or killed when dogs became unwitting projectiles & hazards in road accidents... it also stops them from falling out the back if you slam on the brakes, or jumping out into traffic when you pull up at the lights. And in the country, it stops them jumping out to chase every sheep or cow they can see!
Boerboel always has his care taker in mind. They really like to use their weight as well, can easily make a grown man feel completely inferior. Great too see people be mindful of what they are capable of as they come forward very friendly until they are not.
You're going to use U bolts along with the side bolts on the tow truck right.

i love seeing all of your recovery vids and i hope you do more so i can see what kind of shenanigans you guys can come up with. that being said i also want to see more restoration and modification videos because i'm very interested in the vehicles and equipment you utilise, for example i liked your collapsed mine reopening video because i could see how your Sanny Excavator worked and how you used its capabilities. another example is your Kenworth Semi and how versatile it is, you could attach a lowboy trailer and get the Sanny and two Polaris ATVs on there comfortably and still have room for some tools, or you could strap a regular old semi-trailer/flatbed to it to move tools and parts and all those kinds of things. sorry i'm rambling, anyway, i personally want to see how you choose your vehicles for each job and how you modify them to suit your needs.

Have you ever thought of using synthetic rope instead of cables?? It’s stronger and a lot safer , I know a lot of the tug boats down here started using the synthetic rope because it just out performs cables
Usually on cranes you can't just switch to synthetic rope. The cable is part of the counterweight and is built into the load chart.
My uncle is an older version on Hunter. My sister was having her car fixed and it was gonna cost an astronomical amount to fix it. The shop called and said he had an expert welder friend that might be able to fix it. The expert ended up being my uncle!
I find it really cool that they flew by Allens place. Then had the tour after some months. Now the man has become a really cool friend and he trully Make a great addition to what you guys are up to.

Love the channel D . When the bolts broke , the wrecker body twisted . With the extreme pressure to push the body down to make the bolt holes align , you need to strain relieve the body frame on the other side . This will help the body sit square and not pull on the bolts and weld . Plus reduce fatigue on the attachment . Also think about turning one or both of the fender winches 90°to pull from the side..... convenience options for different situations . Just a thought . My thought was wood cribbing for the outriggers.....4' x 4' square either assembled or loose . Keep safe my friend .

I love your dog :) I have a Pyrenean Mountain dog myself, he also wight about 180 lbs - 80 kilo. When I walk with him, he is not agressiv to strange people (as long as they behave normal), but he doesn't like strangers, and all the people and kids I see ask to pet him, because he looks like a polar bear, but smaller of course. I say no to most people. But as soon as I let him lose in his garden, our yard - he is a different dog, much more agressiv and protective. Loved Zion. I have a client who lives near Seattle who has a mastiff rescue shelter. She's an amazing lady and her dogs are incredible. Really enjoyed meeting them.
The Boerboel, or South African Mastiff, is one of several mastiff breeds that has a powerful jaw and the bite force to match, with 450 PSI of pressure. It compares to that of other large breeds but is still some way short of the Kangal breed's massive 743 PSI bite force pressure figure.
I was under the impression the Argintino Doggo was waaay up that list too

I recall watching an English documentary years ago about how an ultra heavy haulage company moved a massive bit of industrial machinery using what were basically gigantic hovercraft pads.
From memory they were kept inflated by a whopping great compressor mounted on a truck.
Since that old crane is a lot smaller and lighter than what was moved in the documentary, I wonder how a similar system might work for situations like moving stuff over the lake surface and how much it might cost?
While your idea is creative it does have it's problems. I work in Maintenance at a Private School in Melbourne, Australia and we have a hovercraft style lifting system for moving seating cassettes of pull out decking and seating. This system requires a very large three phase screw compressor with an air refrigeration and drying system. It feeds a 11/4 inch rated air hose that splits into two to supply each of the lifting units. These units can easily lift up the seating cassettes but there are several things to watch out for; if you open up the valves on the lift units too quickly you can develop an oscillation and the seating units sound like they are going to break apart. The next wrinkle comes when you cross from the polished timber floor onto the polished timber floor of the forestage lift. As soon as one of the lift units gets over the joint the air escapes and the unit drops with a big crash. We end up having to put duct tape over the joint and both lift units will travel onto the forestage lift. I won't bore you with the rest of the process but I hope that this little tale has given you some idea of the problems associated with air cushion lifting devices. They require vast amounts of compressed air, a smooth surface with no potholes or cracks. In the case of this recovery you have the wrecker cutting up the salt lake and no way to power or carry a large enough compressor to supply enough air. Yes you could try using a trailer compressor like for jack hammers but those trailers are very heavy and would sink into the salt bed, and then you have to get your air hose from the trailer to the lifting devices and distribute the air in a controlled manner.

I used to work in the oil field and was the operator of the world's largest knuckle boom. We used a combination of 2in thick 18x18 square rubber mats and the large wooden pads that are 3 - 4in thick and about 2.5ft diameter on soft ground and asphalt. The truck had 4 out rigers, 1 at each corner of the rear deck, that went out 16ft on each side which really helped to distribute the weight. The truck was 70k pounds empty and had a 40ft rear deck.

So i didnt go through all the tons of comments so maybe some one already said this. The pads with the cleats on them are normally used for ice. We have 4x6 oak boards we use for cribbing under our trucks that work pretty good for getting your ground pressure spread out as well. Not to mention its also a good thing to have a bunch of beefy lumber around to just use on random situations.

I build substations using 40,50+90 ton cranes. Up to 90 we use big plastic ones. Work great easily manageable. The 90 ton or bigger we use wood ones that require a skidsteer to move them around. We are always in mud etc. The yards don't get stoned until they are finished long after the cranes are done installing equipment.

In my past I worked/with a wrecker that had two legs that would extend from end of boom! This would create a tripod that we rotate from the driver’s side to the passenger side and we lifted a lot! We bolted 6x6x6 timber together with 1” bolts and in center put 3/4 plate steel to top surface of the bolt together 6x6 with anchor to keep legs from slipping! Then on the out rigger we would stack same type 6x6x6 log cabin style! Never had a problem however I recall times when we used triple snatch blocks to save on chain breaking with jerks! Hopefully this helps! You are younger then I but if worried about the 6x6x6 switch to 10x10x10 we used the 6x6 because of weight but the boom would move everything into place so the 10x10 might work better on the salt flats!

We have 2 pits one we used the collar on while training and the same thing. Just when there is a lot of distractions we have it just high enough to get her attention. We were not allowed to do it on the boy because he was a rescue. His history is unknown as he found found running the streets in Georgia. He is a moosh though. He is currently having his rear legs worked on because he went so long after an injury it grew back poorly

Don't know what space you have there but putting pressure on you pressing point with your backhoe would give you more down pressure by curling your bucket slightly while adding more down press by pushing down at the same time...I learned from an old pro and hiz guidance for me was right on so I wan't to pass it on to you....you are so kind and helpful...wish I lived closure maybe I could pass on we earned knowledge, while learning from you all.
