I do a lot of water recovery here on Galveston Island, just wanted to give you a little bit of advice. Use your boom to break suction not the cables. This will almost always cause severe damage to your equipment the way you pulled on it. I use to apply my recovery skills in Iraq to. I've pulled 80k armored mraps out of mud with a 2 ton C5500 twin line Vulcan. The boom is better for breaking suction all the time. Just food for thought. Love everything you guys do. Using the boom for recoveries other than a rollover is actually banned per regulations in the US military. The boom on any military recovery asset except the m88 is not authorized to be used for winching because of people overloading them but also the US military doesn’t use a wrecker built onto a HET. Mire level accounts for suction resistance by doubling or tripling vehicle weight requiring more mechanical advantage before winching and winching is only to be done at specific angles. I’ve seen an lhs with trailer down to the cab requiring snatch blocks to be borrowed from other wreckers and the stiff legs almost snapping. I don’t have an issue with the idea of using a boom if it’s not exceeding the mast limits witch unfortunately isn’t much at all when it’s not a vertical pull and I trained my recovery section on the creative methods but my point is know you’re equipments limits and how to work to them them. I did have a 3 wrecker recovery to lift a fueler back onto a bridge so I’ve seen the booms get used way past their capacity and work though

I participated in many knarly recoveries in Afghanistan with the HEMMT wrecker, an M914 tractor, and a lowboy. My guys had also used the M88 tracked wrecker in Iraq, which I only witnessed in training...what a beast. That HETS wrecker conversion looks mean! I know you're making content, but your safety seems to seriously be lacking at time. Love watching you guys and all the good you're doing, just don't get hurt.

A trick when rolling something over, especially when it’s lopsided like that old crane: attach the pulling line anchor to the bottom of the vehicle that’s laying on the ground opposite the tow rig, and run it up and over. This wraps the vehicle with the recovery line and rolls it over, keeping the leverage of the tow rig consistent and helps lift the vehicle, using the wreck as it’s own lever. A drawing would help illustrate how it works, but can’t do that here. That’s how I was taught years ago when I pulled my first recovery back on its wheels. Rock on Brothers!!💪💪
Watching this with my 10 year old step son on the tv. And he tells me “ I want to be like them. When something breaks I want to just laugh” that’s gold for me!
A trick I learned is place a burlap sack over joints, if they brake the burlap absorbs part of shock and keeps parts from flying. We used kinetic ropes to pull out combines stuck to axle depths. Just some past experience.

That was intense reality. I'm a former trucker and this was a hell of a job. Great work. The average person does not even begin to realize how monumental and dangerous the work is so I hope you get millions of subs. I am so glad no one got hurt on this pull out.
So they have wrecker classes in case you wanna learn how to recover stuff. Also when doing a recovery like this, using outriggers is key to keeping your equipment safe
They have used a mini digger on previous jobs. Maybe this lake bed was too soft to drive it there - that's why they didn't bring the big truck with trailer, but rather drove the HET there. Would have made it easier if they flipped it over 1st.
I like how this channel is so out of my usual interests, yet I still enjoy watching it. Shows that big, cool machines transcend all arbitrary differences.

I love that you make mistakes and admit it. You figure out 'how not to use it' for next time. New equipment, some growing pains, and sometimes under estimating the challenge. Awesome video as usual. Caught myself saying “whoop” when y’all were driving out and it was getting soft under the tires. Here’s an idea for your next heavy recovery across the lake bed. Grab you a couple of old car hoods and put them under whatever you’re dragging and use them like skids.
All that weight would likely just crumple a car hood. You are definitely on the right track though. But these skids would need to be made of plate steel to properly distribute all that weight without just turning into a tin can...

Makes all our recoveries look simple for my night job running a wheel lift and flat bed for my father in law in ventura, California. The tires on the HET are like the same size on the 200 ton traveling I run at ventura harbor boat yard during my day job. Your videos are awesome man! I've been a coded welder(lorries, bridges, tanks etc etc) for over 15 years & I've never seen a Truck bed shear off like that! But that's down to the bolts & that's better than welds braking= it did it's job! Ultra cool!
I'm wondering why they did the maneuver that broke the bolts in the first place. The machine will tellnyou your doing it wrong way before this happens.

I haven’t read all of the comments so if this has been recommended I’m sorry. I recommend since you do GREAT fabrication make a large trailer just for recovering items from the Great Salt Lake Flats using huge air tires like they use for moving large items on deep snow. I believe that they are like 6 ft X 8ft. If you can make a trailer that can use street tires for the road and then swap the large Aires tires on soft sand/ lake beds it would solve your towing issues and save wear and tear on your equipment. Hope this is worth your time.

Wow, I have been a company driver for 21 years and have dreamed of owning my very own truck. I have hauled dry van, refer, pneumatic dry bulk tanker, flatbed, drop deck flatbed, and extendable flatbed trailers. I hope that truck and trailer goes to someone who will fully appreciate it. I so love your Ad reads, they are some of the best on youtube. As for breaking your equipment. What I saw was totally awesome, not that the crane broke but how it broke. It broke in a controlled fashion which is what you need to be safe. We rely on things breaking at controlled points so you do not have excessive forces been placed on complonents. It is like a circuit breaker in your house to cut power. The bolts on the frame gave way first before something else more important.

Pretty hard recovery, glad it worked out. Maybe some equipment to make down the road, have a set of 1/4" or 1/2" metal slider pans, just for stuff that could easily slide across dirt, rock, or even as this situation, salt flats. Same design as a set of skis does in the snow, strapped or chained to the wheel or an axle. Would of worked great at 28:15. Way easier to get it back to the road, than putting all that stress on the equipment, while it was digging into the salt bed. Keep up the good work everyone.
Good Idea. I've used an old car hood to drag a vehicle with busted suspension out of a bad area then even onto a trailer once we reached accessible roadway. They were also dragging the 15,000 lb counter weighted end, with that flat steel body plate, through the sand acting like a dozer blade pushing earth, until they lifted it a little with the broken boom. Then they made some time... Good Footage
I love your videos. Ya'll still have some things to learn about winches, snatch blocks, mechanical advantage, and dislodging stuck stuff. Next time, work just one side to get it to break free. Then, the other. Brute force is unimaginative and a sure way to break things. Cool truck though. Coming from FL, not surprised things are rusted out. Overall, you got it done though. Good job.

Look into enrolling in a wreck master course. It’ll teach you everything recovery related and that’ll help you not to rip the wrecker body off your wrecker. Love the positivity! Keep up the great work.
Maybe he can intern at Pepe's Towing for bit. When it comes to large vehicle and equipment wrecks Lost Angeles provides a pretty good stomping grounds. 👌 Have you ever seen a L.A. City Fire Department rotator rig ? Best built and equipped in the field. I toured one with everything from chainsaws and drones to hazmat and medic, jaws of life, lifting bags, biohazard equipment etc. Of course you gotta have men (and some tough ass women) who can use it all, without tearing it apart. 😆 👌
@@sissybitchkendall3615 definitely, nrc, jerr dan and B&B have absolutely the best stuff. We have been getting mostly B&B builds now and there great. we have an 80 ton 5 winch rotator 10 wheeler with two pushers from B & B its a monster great equipment.

It's not a swamp , it's a giant lake , it dries out in summer and depending on rain shadow effect , it may or may not fill back up ( basically the mountains stop the clouds that contain rain)

Now, I probably could help a little like driving just don't have my CDL.. It would be my second dream come true if I had it because my father drove a semi for over 35 yrs and my youngest brother drives. I've always wanted to drive but I just never tried to get my CDL. I didn't think I was smart enough to get it. Working for you, helping with recoveries and driving be another dream come true. The cinematic sequence, starting with the drone footage and ending with Razor/Handheld, OH MY GOD how beautiful it was! The drone really, really, brought something extra special together with the wheelieing mean green towing machine!
That ring flying is a perfect example of why "twice the length of (chain, cable, rope)" is the "minimum " safe distance as training goes in recovery schools.
Better advice would be don't be in front or behind the cable when pulling. A rope twice as long would just mean half the distance the ring would have traveled. The fact is no amount of caution would eliminate the risk. It may slightly reduce it. A good example is airbags while they do reduce injuries and death we have noticed defective airbags have caused deaths and injuries. I remember one day leaving my work in a factory and the safety team had put up a sign that said All accidents are preventable. I said to myself that is not possible because you cannot control what other people do and some equipment fails. The sign was removed a couple weeks later.
Yeah a sled is easy to build too. We drag powerline equipment (bucket trucks, digger derricks and even large cranes) all we use is 1/2" and 3/4" plate steel that is curved just a bit in the front to keep it from digging in. Slides across muddy and sandy terrain easily
I drove a heavy wrecker for many years. I never did much of a water recovery, although in the small wrecker, I recovered a couple of vehicles from a shallow Lake called Prosser just outside of Truckee. It was a very popular place to try mud bog type action. I also had to recover a big rig in Los Angeles area that had broken through the barrier on a three-level overpass and was dangling cab down held only by the landing gear on the trailer. I had to boom out and lower the cable to the cab of the truck then I climbed down the cable and hooked onto the frame just ahead of the fifth wheel plate. I managed to climb back up the cable with great difficulty, then I threw a rope down to the driver who made a loop and put it around his chest, then I pulled him back up not with my own strength which sadly was not enough, but by tying another winch line to the end of the rope. Kind of a scary recovery but it worked and I managed to pull it back up onto the roadway safely and send him on his way with the load intact, although I never opened the trailer to see the state of the cargo inside, but at least it wasn't the type of accident where everything would have been tipped over on its side or worse blocking the rear doors only to fall out on whoever opened them next!
So looks like it's going to take a while to fix the tow truck. I'm sure it will be fine that crane was stuck like glue but still came up nice job Dave. Getting the lake cleaned up

Every time I hear about the Yankum ropes I automatic think about Matt’s off road recovery. He also use those ropes, and sold them for a long time now - I really like the yellow colour they have :-) Yours should have been green like your truck… :-)

The kinetic energy straps are so amazing. I have pulled loaded 6 axel tanker semi 110,000 lbs trucks out of the ditch in 4 feet of snow with a 30 foot strap. Stuck happens. Recovery goes easy with the right gear. 👍

Great recovery boys , that bed mount needs a redesign , the force on those bolts shouldn’t be a shear poor design, it should be able to take all the abuse you can throw at it . Can’t wait to see your new videos 🇨🇦
If the bolts hadn't sheared, it's very likely that something much costlier would have broken or twisted irreparably. They simply used/abused the entire rig in a manner in which it was simply not designed to be used. Everything has limits.
For things that are sunken, bring an excavator, and dig around it - The suction can make things crazy stuck !! Frankly, if it was a game, excavators are kinda OP machines. 😄

Cdl classes are expensive here in the east coast. My old man passed 4 years ago, I grew up watching him drive, learning how to drive, riding with him and I plan to follow in his footsteps getting my cdl's here very soon hopefully

Just a heads up, the het pulls better in reverse in thins type of recovery. You can pull a long ways in reverse because it has the torque which will maximize your pull without over driving the tire into the ground crating another rut to drag your load through. It will pull more and spin the tires less. Hope this helps. Great videos guys.
Heads Up... Every thing you just said is IGNOANT...They have to go 10 miles in the sand. They are NOT just going just across the truck stop parking lot. Did you not see how all the leverage was lifting the whole front of the truck off the ground..? You will destroy your front suspension balancing all that weight on 2 wheels that are designed to steer the vehicle, not act as a load bearing support with a single fulcrum point. The single front wheels teetering all that weight would have made even deeper ruts if they didn't blow apart. They were also dragging the end with that flat steel body plate and the 15,000 lb counter weight through the sand acting like a dozer blade pushing earth. Once they lifted the weight a little with the broken boom, they started to make some time... This could only be done with the boom from the back of the rig being used the way it was designed to be used.. Good Footage guys

you should check out CDL programs in your area! you can make sure your work hours and training hours don’t overlap. i live in GA so idk if your state has this option, but a lot of trucking businesses will pay for most or all of the training & licensing costs if you agree to work for them once you’re done. my cousin did that n it took him around three months from the first day of training to the day he was licensed. other places won’t pay for the classes but they will give you a massive sign up bonus
For this type of extreme load on the salt lake bed, have you ever considered wide, steel skis - drag or lift the load onto the skis, chain them in place, then drag the ski assembly?

A trick when rolling something over, especially when it’s lopsided like that old crane: attach the pulling line anchor to the bottom of the vehicle that’s laying on the ground opposite the tow rig, and run it up and over. This wraps the vehicle with the recovery line and rolls it over, keeping the leverage of the tow rig consistent and helps lift the vehicle, using the wreck as it’s own lever. A drawing would help illustrate how it works, but can’t do that here. That’s how I was taught years ago when I pulled my first recovery back on its wheels.

A trick I learned is place a burlap sack over joints, if they brake the burlap absorbs part of shock and keeps parts from flying. We used kinetic ropes to pull out combines stuck to axle depths. Just some past experience.

They have used a mini digger on previous jobs. Maybe this lake bed was too soft to drive it there - that's why they didn't bring the big truck with trailer, but rather drove the HET there. Would have made it easier if they flipped it over 1st.

Awesome video as usual. Caught myself saying “whoop” when y’all were driving out and it was getting soft under the tires. Here’s an idea for your next heavy recovery across the lake bed. Grab you a couple of old car hoods and put them under whatever you’re dragging and use them like skids.

The tires on the HET are like the same size on the 200 ton traveling I run at ventura harbor boat yard during my day job. Your videos are awesome man! I've been a coded welder(lorries, bridges, tanks etc etc) for over 15 years & I've never seen a Truck bed shear off like that!

I haven’t read all of the comments so if this has been recommended I’m sorry. I recommend since you do GREAT fabrication make a large trailer just for recovering items from the Great Salt Lake Flats using huge air tires like they use for moving large items on deep snow. I believe that they are like 6 ft X 8ft. If you can make a trailer that can use street tires for the road and then swap the large Aires tires on soft sand/ lake beds it would solve your towing issues and save wear and tear on your equipment. Hope this is worth your time.

I so love your Ad reads, they are some of the best on youtube. As for breaking your equipment. What I saw was totally awesome, not that the crane broke but how it broke. It broke in a controlled fashion which is what you need to be safe. We rely on things breaking at controlled points so you do not have excessive forces been placed on complonents. It is like a circuit breaker in your house to cut power. The bolts on the frame gave way first before something else more important.

Pretty hard recovery, glad it worked out. Maybe some equipment to make down the road, have a set of 1/4" or 1/2" metal slider pans, just for stuff that could easily slide across dirt, rock, or even as this situation, salt flats. Same design as a set of skis does in the snow, strapped or chained to the wheel or an axle. Would of worked great at 28:15.
Way easier to get it back to the road, than putting all that stress on the equipment, while it was digging into the salt bed.

Good Idea. I've used an old car hood to drag a vehicle with busted suspension out of a bad area then even onto a trailer once we reached accessible roadway. They were also dragging the 15,000 lb counter weighted end, with that flat steel body plate, through the sand acting like a dozer blade pushing earth, until they lifted it a little with the broken boom. Then they made some time... Good Footage

The cinematic sequence, starting with the drone footage and ending with Razor/Handheld, OH MY GOD how beautiful it was! The drone really, really, brought something extra special together with the wheelieing mean green towing machine!
Absolutely cool recovery, y'all. Those ropes are insane.
That ring flying is a perfect example of why "twice the length of (chain, cable, rope)" is the "minimum " safe distance as training goes in recovery schools.
And why snatch blocks and proper rigging is important. I STILL carry my recovery rigging card!
Better advice would be don't be in front or behind the cable when pulling. A rope twice as long would just mean half the distance the ring would have traveled. The fact is no amount of caution would eliminate the risk. It may slightly reduce it. A good example is airbags while they do reduce injuries and death we have noticed defective airbags have caused deaths and injuries. I remember one day leaving my work in a factory and the safety team had put up a sign that said All accidents are preventable. I said to myself that is not possible because you cannot control what other people do and some equipment fails. The sign was removed a couple weeks later.
Airbags might be handy for breaking suction and repositioning wrecks. Maybe a nice sled to drag things onto that will slide easier.

Yeah a sled is easy to build too. We drag powerline equipment (bucket trucks, digger derricks and even large cranes) all we use is 1/2" and 3/4" plate steel that is curved just a bit in the front to keep it from digging in. Slides across muddy and sandy terrain easily

I drove a heavy wrecker for many years. I never did much of a water recovery, although in the small wrecker, I recovered a couple of vehicles from a shallow Lake called Prosser just outside of Truckee. It was a very popular place to try mud bog type action. I also had to recover a big rig in Los Angeles area that had broken through the barrier on a three-level overpass and was dangling cab down held only by the landing gear on the trailer. I had to boom out and lower the cable to the cab of the truck then I climbed down the cable and hooked onto the frame just ahead of the fifth wheel plate. I managed to climb back up the cable with great difficulty, then I threw a rope down to the driver who made a loop and put it around his chest, then I pulled him back up not with my own strength which sadly was not enough, but by tying another winch line to the end of the rope. Kind of a scary recovery but it worked and I managed to pull it back up onto the roadway safely and send him on his way with the load intact, although I never opened the trailer to see the state of the cargo inside, but at least it wasn't the type of accident where everything would have been tipped over on its side or worse blocking the rear doors only to fall out on whoever opened them next!
So looks like it's going to take a while to fix the tow truck. I'm sure it will be fine that crane was stuck like glue but still came up nice job Dave. Getting the lake cleaned up

The kinetic energy straps are so amazing. I have pulled loaded 6 axel tanker semi 110,000 lbs trucks out of the ditch in 4 feet of snow with a 30 foot strap. Stuck happens. Recovery goes easy with the right gear. 👍

I was thinking that tow boom should have been welded to the frame of the tow truck. I can't believe it just sheered those bolts off like that.
If the bolts hadn't sheared, it's very likely that something much costlier would have broken or twisted irreparably.
They simply used/abused the entire rig in a manner in which it was simply not designed to be used.

Just a heads up, the het pulls better in reverse in thins type of recovery. You can pull a long ways in reverse because it has the torque which will maximize your pull without over driving the tire into the ground crating another rut to drag your load through. It will pull more and spin the tires less. Hope this helps. Great videos guys.

Heads Up... Every thing you just said is IGNOANT...They have to go 10 miles in the sand. They are NOT just going just across the truck stop parking lot. Did you not see how all the leverage was lifting the whole front of the truck off the ground..? You will destroy your front suspension balancing all that weight on 2 wheels that are designed to steer the vehicle, not act as a load bearing support with a single fulcrum point. The single front wheels teetering all that weight would have made even deeper ruts if they didn't blow apart. They were also dragging the end with that flat steel body plate and the 15,000 lb counter weight through the sand acting like a dozer blade pushing earth. Once they lifted the weight a little with the broken boom, they started to make some time... This could only be done with the boom from the back of the rig being used the way it was designed to be used.. Good Footage guys

Even your family outing to the cabin had an amazing amount of work AND THEN the "clean up" turned into an ordeal. That was super fun to watch. Thank you! I would love to come hang out with you guys. I do NOT have my CDL, but I want one. The problem is, I JUST started a new career path... I'm excited about it and look forward to what the future brings. Watching your videos make me wonder how I could keep logistics a part of my life... I sold my "truck" and trailers to move from Texas to Oregon.
you should check out CDL programs in your area! you can make sure your work hours and training hours don’t overlap. i live in GA so idk if your state has this option, but a lot of trucking businesses will pay for most or all of the training & licensing costs if you agree to work for them once you’re done. my cousin did that n it took him around three months from the first day of training to the day he was licensed. other places won’t pay for the classes but they will give you a massive sign up bonus

For this type of extreme load on the salt lake bed, have you ever considered wide, steel skis - drag or lift the load onto the skis, chain them in place, then drag the ski assembly?

Yes yanking it across 2 miles is not genuis. Breaking his machine, burning out clutches, using an insane amount of diesel. All to clean up a rusty old thing that wasn't really hurting anything.
