I only use Lr for cloud. It is simply more intuative and build from the ground. I have 3 TB adobe cloud, and I know it will always be backup in the cloud. I then also let Lr sync a local copy to hdd. What I like is sharing options, it so easy to share with customers. my workflow is 100% faster. They can pick their photos, i edit, and the keep the link forever. Further more is AI much more comprehensive. try to search on “car†- then you get all the pictures with a car even without tagging them.
i am not going back to classic even it has some more functions. I predict that Lr is the future vs. classic.😮

I dip into LR “cloud thingy†for pretty much the same reasons you do: sync to/from iPad and explore interesting presets. One thing you didn’t mention that I particularly like is that one only has to hover over the preset to see what sliders will be moved. Super fast way to learn (as you point out) without having to apply the preset and then undo, then try the next one, and so on.

Hello Glyn. I only use LrC without exception. I turn my folders into collections in order to be able to sync with Lr mobile devices. But the thing about presets catches my interest big time. Never considered so far. Just realised they also work on my mobile devices 😬Thanks a lot for sharing!

I use it for for the presets and organizing. It’s easy to just import with LR, and bounce the good shots out to PS. And I use the camera raw filter way more than LR when making adjustments. PS masks are easier and there’s way more flexibility, especially when paired with camera raw.

Lr Classic - maybe that'll change in the future but as you say the difference between the two versions is not close enough to make it easy enough + the whole cloud synch is TFH.
Also, Lr Classic suits my workflow, which harks back to my analogue days, where there's a time and place to edit and post process. For example, using SilverEFEX Pro for B&W.
Keep on keeping on Glyn, you're videos are fantastic.

Thanx for your great content, Glyn.
For I mostly edit my photos on Lr mobile and especially cause itˋs a pain in the ar** syncing the presets, I donˋt edit in Lr(CC) anymore and rarely in LrC. I cannot understand, why Adobe doesnˋt seem to put any effort at all to fixing this sync-mess once and forever!!! That nothing but a shame!
    Keep on going, Glyn…

    Glyn
    Great and informative again!!
Iv been in LR since Vr2.0 the days of CD purchases in 2008 and survived all the changes as most all have.
Adobe had a bit of rough water there but made tough changes for those not heavily into the serious pro catalog functions.
I use the LrC catalog since 08 and dabble in the CC Cloud or what ever we want to call
    It these days.
    Question
I’d love to set my 2 grandsons up w LR the cloud.
Can LR cloud be purchased as a stand alone app?
It’s joined to my LrC subscription but can it be a stand alone app?

I find Lightroom Classic slow on my computer and it has been for years. The alternative for me is Darktable. This in combination with Photoshop/Camera Raw works perfectly for me. I don't use any presets except 1 I made myself to approximate the colors from my camera.

Hi Glyn…I only use the LR Creative Cloud version on my Mac, iPhone and iPad. I was looking for a comprehensive application that would sync and store my images and edits across multiple devices in the cloud. At $9.99 per month for 1TB of storage is a bargain. I’m fairly new to editing in the last couple of years, having tried Apple Photos, Darkroom and Google Snapseed. Lightroom Cloud/Mobile/Web fits the bill at this stage in my experience.

Interesting about the presets. I haven't explored those much, even though I've been a Lightroom user since it came out. I've relied more on third party plugins, especially for b&w processing. I only use Lightroom Classic and Mobile. I think I used Lightroom CC once to edit something I shot with my phone and I wanted a bigger screen to edit it. But when I go out to do bird photography, I'll come home with 100s of 50MB photos, I can't imagine the point of trying to edit all of those on-line. I agree what is the point of LightroomCC, especially for a guy like me that doesn't use presets that much. Mobile is pretty handy though. If I have my bird lens on but I want to capture a landscape photo, I just whip out my iPhone and shoot in RAW with Lightroom and then edit it on my iPad later.

I've been a LrC user ever since it was released (used Raw Shooter before that which Adobe bought out for their technology that eventually morphed into Lightroom.) I would love to use LR Mobile more, but cloud storage is always an issue for me. I truly don't understand why Adobe doesn't offer a storage level somewhere between the 20GB default and the 1TB level.

I wish that we knew Adobes vision for the future of Lightroom... Is Lightroom CC just meant for the casual photographer? Or was it created to eventually be the successor to Lightroom Classic? I think that Lightroom CC looks like a cleaner more modern interface, but it lacks some of the features that professionals utilize that are found in Lightroom Classic.
And maybe its just me, but I hate the fact that my collection sets that are created in Lightroom classic do not sync over to Lightroom CC. It just shows each individual collection, but they are not nested within a set. You then have to go into Lightroom CC and manually create a folder for them. Why do we have different terminology between the two versions of Lightroom and why don't these just automatically sync correctly between the two versions?

Thanks for this Glyn. I didn't know about the presets. I would really like to have one integrated system with mobile and PC so that I could take pictures in the field, edit them on my iPad and sync them up to LR on my PC. There are two reasons I don't do this 1) I already use Google's cloud and have all my photos synced across devices. I don't want to pay for Adobe's cloud in addition to Google. 2) I'm often working with slow Internet speeds. It's not practical to upload all my photos to the cloud. With the Google cloud, I can store the photos locally on my devices and then sync them when I've got the bandwidth. This doesn't appear to be an option with the LR mobile ecosystem. My wish would be that Adobe stop being greedy for once and let customers use their preferred cloud vendor for photo syncing between devices. An offline feature would be nice. Also, I wish that Adobe would maintain consistency across LR versions, especially albums/collections. It's crazy that you have all the great smart collection functionality with LRC, but a dumbed down album setup on LRCC. Don't the development teams talk to one another?

I only use CC or Cloud when I travel with just my iPad and a portable SSD. I use the iPad to offload photos from my SD cards to the SSD. From there, I sync them in a temporary folder to iCloud as a a just in case backup. Then, I select a few good photos from the day for a quick edit in Lightroom mobile and possible social media post. Once I get home, I use the SSD to import all my travel photos into Lightroom Classic. I then clean out my Adobe cloud storage (I only have the 20 GB of the Photography Plan), my iCloud storage, and proceed with my normal 3-2-1 backup strategy for the photos. Once I confirm the Time Machine and Backblaze backups are complete, I can get rid of the Adobe and iCloud storage (and reuse the SD cards if necessary.)

I tried to export the photo from both and compare, even tried to figure out if there would be a way to get the colors right in Camera raw, then export and import to Lightroom to continue there. I invested years to master Lightroom and I hate now to probably have to learn Capture One. 😕

I use CC exclusively. Since I'm always taking photos with my phone, more than ever since I got a Samsung Galaxy S 23 Ultra, CC provides me the opportunity to edit anywhere that I want, anytime that I want. Truthfully, I never liked Lightroom Classic. My thought process is that since I can do everything in Photoshop, why not just use Photoshop. When Lightroom became available on the phone, that changed everything. And it retains full resolution.

As discussed with you the other day I'll be using 'Mobile' soon - but I'm still trying to get my head around the difference between that and "cc cloud thing". I thought I had it straight in my head - Lightroom Classic was the Lightroom equivalent of full Photoshop; Lightroom Mobile was the Lightroom equivalent of Photoshop Elements (i.e. cut down). But Mobile has mobile syncing and Classic doesn't... or it does but it syncs with Mobile... and then there's CC Cloud Thing.... aaargh. Back to the drawing board for my little brain!

I had the exact same issues with CC.. Never got why they would change shortcuts, workflow and even some edit panels (calibration correction).
But love the presets handling, sharing and editing curve on your image (especially on mobile) from cc.. I wish they would just stop the internal fight and merge. But only bring the good stuff from cc to classic and leave out the obviously stupid changes pls.
Btw the book module is the greatest miss adobe has made not being able to have custom sizes, flexible typography and more european quality printers. Just give us an 'Indesign LE'. Proper background, layout and type control would be awesome and game changing. The one big advantage of making books in lightroom gives you above all others, is the possiblity to work with raw up and till print, so you can change colours, recrop, sharpen or swap with just that second image you discarded before.
But current system is just to limited.

For the 'catalogue ' and editing initially and now for the synchronisation between the variations in Lr; for me every day is a school day with this program ..... Yeah I saw Ron's comment and know about the name mess up from Adobe. Decided initially to call the video Lightroom CC as that's what it used to be called and a lot of people still call it that (me included) ... had I said Lightroom a lot of people would have thought I was refering to Lightroom Classic. Hopefully (somehow) Adobe will sort this name confusion and just call Lightroom classic ... Lightroom and the others ... Plus, I really don't want to pay a monthly fee anyway, and I don't want to save my files to an Adobe cloud either. I tried ON1 a couple of years ago, and it was way too complicated to even save an image. Ah well. I'll keep looking.

I've been using Lightroom Classic since the very beginning, and it has been an invaluable tool for my final output, creating presets, and making precise micro adjustments. As for Photoshop, it has always been my go-to for editing and more intricate adjustments. I completely understand your frustrations with the new Lightroom CC, and I share those concerns as well. However, once I took the time to understand and adapt to the cloud and mobile workflows, I found them to be quite useful. The Photography package that includes Photoshop and Lightroom is the only thing I need, although I do have to pay a bit extra for cloud storage. But let me tell you, having the ability to work on my clients' images on my iPad while I'm on the road has been an absolute game changer for me. It has truly enhanced my productivity and workflow. Thanks again for another great video!

Lightroom was merely a cheap, basic photo editing alternative to the expensive PS. Now that it is a subscription service and you get LR and PS for the same fee I don't see the point of LR. I can work better and faster with Adobe Bridge (I can use this for organising all of the media within my Creative Cloud apps), ACR and PS. Also if I have to move files I don't have the problem you have with LR. If you move a file outside of LR, LR loses the link/index and you have to re-establish it. With Bridge, etc I can move and create files using MS Explorer and I can get to them without having to index them.

Great videos Glyn. I can't stand the schizophrenic behaviors of Adobe in regards to Photoshop-Lightroom-Ligtroom CC, Clasic, Clasic CC or whatever their names keep changing to.
First the different shortcuts. From Photoshop to Lightroom we had to learn separate shortcuts. Then they came up with the new Lightroom, that no one asked for....and here we go...different shortcuts again. Then Lightroom Mobile, guess what your collections are not collections anymore, now they are albums or whatever name they come up with just not to be- collections. Its like we are dealing with idiots that suffer with schizophrenia. Then instead on working on our presets to synch (simply by creating in the presets options little toggle - synch presets, we have to deal with exporting and importing and different workarounds. ....its a fucking nightmare from company that has been working on these things for years and this is the best confusing strategy they come up with..
When things are not syncing from the cloud to my tablet in the background and I am missing 20 GB customer support at Adobe told me why do you need all these photos on your tablet anyways? ? Not a joke...I wish they fixed Lightroom Classic interface and skipped the CC all together.
We should not need to 4 different Lightrooms to do a simple job to synch photos between desktop and mobile, no mater how nice those presets are in the new lightroom

Personally, I use both rather frequently, preferring ‘mobile’. I spend a lot of time on out of town assignments and LR mobile on my iPad Pros has been a home run for me, with a few caveats. The main problem is that of course dependence upon a decent internet connection, thankfully this has yet to be much of an issue…yet. While I do take along a portable 2TB SSD for storage, as of yet, you can not edit from an external drive with iOS, hopefully Apple will address in a few weeks at WWDC (though I am not holding my breath). I did the MacBook thing’ for years when traveling, frankly I have no desire to go back down that road, I carry too much photo gear as it is, a laptop is just not an option, when a much lighter 12in iPad Pro fits the bill. With Apple announcing Logic and Final Cut Pro for the iPad, I am hoping that 3rd parties like Adobe will jump on the band bandwagon, I would love to see Adobe beef up LRCC’s specs to match what Classic offers, after all that is (was) the plan, a cloud based version of LRc, thus far unrealized. Or, dare we wish for it….an LRc for the iPad, now that would be something that I could definitely get behind, hell, I’ve been screaming for it ever since the M1 iPads were announced. I love LRc, it has a number of features and tools that CC does not have, that I use frequently, the new Denoise (missing from Mobile), HDR/Pano and the rumoured Removal Tool now available in PS Beta, a far superior option than their current offerings, I am very much impressed, I suspect this will be ported over to LRc and possibly CC once testing is completed, at least I hope so. My issue with Classic hit home the other day when two my my backup Seagate 8th hds dismounted, one was fine but the other had uninitialized, which meant erasing and formatting. So now the task of copying the images (100k+) to that drive is underway . At the end of the day, all # versions of LR have their positives and negatives. Which do I prefer….? Well, editing on my iPad Pro, syncing an image to LRc for additional work if needed, is my first choice, for obvious reasons, while not perfect by any means, for the most part, it gets the job done. Aside from PS, I cut my editing teeth on LRc back in the mid 80s, so it is an old friend, a friend that needs to expand, hopefully to iOS, also, LRCC on my Mac in a nice backup to Classic should my drives go south, I can still get work done. At this point they all my favourites, hard to choose, all 3 versions fill a certain niche in my workflow.
