Filmed in Whitby on the East Coast of England. The song reflects his emotions regarding his mother who abandoned him when he was young. He had hoped to reconcile with her and did meet her but I don't think things worked out between them.
This is a magnificent track for all time. People will be listening to this in another 50 years. His voice is incredibly nuanced and controlled and plaintive and beauuutiful. I would place this in Rhythm and Blues, but maybe Soul / Neo-Soul?
Thank you Rere for this amazing song. I remember the first time listening to Mick's voice. Now I know why he wrote the song and understand why I first relate to it. And you are absolutely right, what we experience as children (and maybe as teenagers) stays in our lives forever and, in a way, define the person we become. Even when we don't think or even remember, past is always driving us in one direction. Take care Rere.
Great reaction, Rere! My wife and I loved Simply Red when he was first popular. Mick Hucknall has an amazing voice, very pleasant and soulful. I've watched some videos of him performing recently and he still sounded fantastic.
This song tears me up. I was "going through it", relationship-wise, when this song came out. It dropped like a ton of bricks on me because I am that guy. This song was written for me, period. But that video was filmed at Whitby, in Northern England. That is pretty cool (yes, I am a "Dracula" fan)!
Simply Red (and singer Mick Hucknall) are a seriously underrated band/artist. They did very well commercially but somehow never really wowed the critics. 'Stars' 'Fairground' and 'For Your Babies' are all stunning songs.
I envy this generation that are taking the time to discover the music i believe my generation took for granted! Not to say we didn't appreciate it just that we didn't know any different...i guess we basically expected it. Cheers
A gorgeous song from 1985 that sounds like the magic from 1975!!!! The only other song I know of them is IF YOU DON'T KNOW ME BY NOW! Great Reaction!! My Part II is what I noticed missing!? ☮️♾️😎🎸🤟🏼
Welcome to another real 'rabbit hole' with Mick Hucknall and Simply Red. Please please please check out their cover version of 'If You Don't Know Me By Now''. Pure gold. 🙋♂
LOL, this is a 1985 track from their debut album Picture Book, a single, which along with Money's Too Tight (to Mention), introduced us to the band and the super soulful voice of Mick Hucknall. Plenty of subsequent songs to listen to, as well, from their albums Men and Women, A New Flame (my personal fave of theirs, you could pick anything from that album) and Stars, before they started to wane in the mid 90s. Saw them at Wembley on their Stars tour ('92 I think, may have been '91) and they were ace. Hucknall was a bit of a diva and was screaming at someone when he came on stage for the first song. Great voice, though. Loved their sound, was very much of the time, and when a lot of music around them was getting naff. Addendum: As for other tracks, I would avoid "Money's Too Tight (to Mention)" and "If you don't know me by now", not because they are bad, but because they are covers. If you want solid Simply Red songs, I would suggest "A New Flame" which is a bit more upbeat, or "You've Got It", which was co-written by Lamont Dozier of Holland-Dozier-Holland of Motown fame, as was Infidelity (Men and Women), which would be another interesting listen. Hucknall was otherwise the main songwriter. From Stars, I would suggest "Something Got Me Started".
Glad you liked it. For similar mood/feel, Pls also check out Dream Academy's "Life In A Northern Town". For more of Simply Red, their cover of Money's Too Tight To Mention is a fave. And also their Never, Never Love.
You are young and thanks to the internet you are in for a rude awakening. So many many many great songs to hear. I will give a pick. Black singing the sweetest smile.
Simply Red has a few hits... I love his voice. it's unique... " If you don't know me by now" was a big hit for Simply Red, and rightfully so, but the original version by "Teddy Pendergrass" is untouchable...
It sounds nice your accent but after a while gets anything as hell and simply red is the best ever I grew up listening to them . I even didn't know I have ADHD but it was the music that calmed me down.
PART II 😁 Scanned your channel and didn't see any Little River Band ⁉️⁉️ A great song by them is IT'S A LONG WAY THERE!! Also didn't notice the proper Bob Seger song 😊 which is NIGHT MOVES!!! Oh ya!! Peace 🕊️☮️
"Fairground", "If you don't know me by now" and "Money's too tight to mention" are three more Simply Red songs that are well worth a listen.

A timeless classic.
I saw Mick sing this song at the Montreux jazz festival in 1992. He's an absolutely incredible singer in person.
I seen them in Chicago the last time they tour the states. What a show.
Stars is another beautiful song by this guy! Absolutely love his voice l.also love your reactions 😊

One of those bands that had their own unique sound and style.
Great reaction, Rere! My wife and I loved Simply Red when he was first popular. Mick Hucknall has an amazing voice, very pleasant and soulful. I've watched some videos of him performing recently and he still sounded fantastic.
Hucknall has ALWAYS had a distinctly superb taste for music. 🥰

This is proof that gingers do have soul/s
As a ginger, I can attest this is not true.
Gingers do not have souls.
Simply Red (and singer Mick Hucknall) are a seriously underrated band/artist. They did very well commercially but somehow never really wowed the critics. 'Stars' 'Fairground' and 'For Your Babies' are all stunning songs.
Critics don’t know squat usually. They hate Led Zep too.
The singer is 64 years old. He started his career back in the 1980´s.
I saw him in concert last year, and he still have the voice. Even the high notes he hits in the same way. 😉
Amazing song Amazing video thanks❤
I envy this generation that are taking the time to discover the music i believe my generation took for granted! Not to say we didn't appreciate it just that we didn't know any different...i guess we basically expected it. Cheers

Another great track is if you don't know me by now worth checking out imo
The genre is blue-eyed soul.
wish people would stop using this term. it's a racist slang used back then.
