  • This video will show you how to disassemble, clean, rebuild, and reassemble a 1996 Mercury 90 HP 2 stroke outboard motor. These are the carburetors from my 1996 Mercury 90 HP that powers my 24" Tracker pontoon. I am in the process of rebuilding / refurbishing / modifying my pontoon boat into a mean Cat fishing machine! Join along in the journey and see what all transpires along the way as we fix up whatever needs to be repaired and remove whatever is deemed useless.

I have this same engine on my bass boat. Lately, I have had a hard time starting it. I have to have someone pump the fuel bulb to get it started. Sometimes it dies at idle in neutral and when putting it in gear. Once it is warmed up in runs fantastic. It seems like it doesn't keep its prime. I have to prime it every time I start it, even after it's warmed up unless I start it immediately after shutdown. My thoughts are I need to rebuild the carbs and the idle screw might have to be adjusted. I did buy a new primer bulb and hose, new fuel hose quick disconnects because they were leaking. I already replaced the quick disconnects thinking that's where I was losing my prime and I thought it would fix the hard start and low idle but it didn't. I also bought a new fuel pump which came with all new fuel line. I haven't replaced that yet, nor the primer bulb. I guess now after watching your video I will order the carb rebuild kit and rebuild that and maybe put the new fuel pump on. Do you think my problems are just carb related? Thanks for any information and thanks for making this video. 😊

Hi Bob my boat was doing the same thing. Hard start bad idle. Died when put in gear. Maybe better after warm up but usually not. Replace the bulb first, then the fuel pump (it’s very easy). If that does not fix it then rebuild the carbs. You got this. I purchased cheap kits off of EBay. It’s not so much the need to replace parts as it is to clean. You will notice all of the trash in your bowls when you open, then that trash / debris is everywhere including the jet holes. Good luck, make a video take pics use a manual. Count your jet turns in before screwing out. Note the position of the sync bar. The adjustment is critical do as it says in Manual. If problems after startup - revisit sync and carb settings. You’ll soon be on the water!

@@willielacalle4991 Thank you so much for your advice. I am going to do exactly what you wrote. I am looking for the carb rebuild kit right now. I purchased a manual this morning 😊

I wonder if these are the same as the ones in my 1996 40HP force…?

Not sure about that. But the process will be the same. The carbs are all similar. First time? Go slow take pics as you go. Feel uncertain, buy a manual it will easily take you through the entire procedure. You got this and good luck!

Do you have any more videos on resurrecting your motor? This is exactly the same motor I have on my pontoon, and I'm in the process of getting carb kits to rebuild mine. BTW, in the kit, there are these tiny little brass caps, and it comes with 4 screws, and I've seen a couple kits come with one or two shiny metal domes (for lack of a better description). I'm all about "if it ain't broke, don't fix it", but since this is a new thing for me, it's hard for me to tell what's broke and what ain't.

Hi thanks for your comment. Lots more restoration videos on my channel specifically on the pontoon. The main thing you want to do with your carbs is clean them out with carb cleaner and blow them out with air. No need to replace the caps or any other part unless they are damaged. Do just like the video clean all passages, blow them out, set to factory settings (whatever your manual states), and tweak them if needed after starting. Check out the lower unit repair and see what happens if you don’t winterize when an ice storm hits. Thanks again!

Hi Randy I have lots of motor repair videos including how I rebuilt the lower unit. Check out my channel. On the carbs, it’s all about the cleaning and not so much replacing. When you pull out the carbs note the condition of the Inside of the bowl. If there is debris then cleaning out your carb will do the trick. You now have the parts you need in case you need them. I’ve never replaced those brass caps or anything else that was not broken. You now know the mind set so you now got this. Count jet screw turns in before screwing out. Use a manual, take your time, take pics, make notes, take a video. Good luck to you and I’m certain you’ll be on the water soon

I didn’t buy a kit from mercury. I looked it up on ebay under mercury 90hp carb rebuild kit. Lots cheaper and worked perfectly.
