    Non-ethanol fuel is key to not having to do carbs much or ever. I have a 92 Evinrude and just did them for the for the first time.

    Assuming it's a two stroke... I would swap out the plugs, mix up a batch/tank of two stroke fuel and buy a can of spray "outboard" starting fluid. The primer bulb should firm up after pumping. Make sure you have a good battery or strong pulling arm and let it rip. If it doesn't atleast try to fire up after a few attempts. Spray a little starting fluid into the opening of the carbs. Not too much, since you don't want to flood the engine. Don't rev it up until it has been running a little while.

    Even if I am going to use the boat again in a week or so I always unhook the fuel line and run the engine until it stops. That way there is No fuel in the carbs to gunk up. Same thing in my Weed Eater or any 2 cycle motor. Takes a little time to Restart but It will every time and no expensive return visits to the boat Shop.

      Actually, it will always remain fuel in the bottom carb cups if you dont unscrew the drain screw at the bottom of your carbs. This will eventually clog your carbs! Just a tip!

    Hey man, thank you for this video. I bought a '93 Four Winns with original Johnson 115 2-stroke oil injected outboard, and had been having idling problems with it since day 1. I came across your demo here, and decided to give it a shot. I'm by no means an enlightened mechanic, but found this video informing enough to take care of my problem. I also installed one of those fuel selector valves because I think it's a great idea. Also, thanks for the info about letting the engine run out of gas if I'm not going to use it for again in less that a week's time. My engine did die on the cleaner/gas mixture a couple times at the very beginning, but I think it just needed to pass that gunk through and warm up a little bit. Because she is purring like a lion now. Thanks again. Great video. Screw the a$$hole$ that complained about the camera work. This video was enough to save my fall St. Croix river run I had planned.

    I agree. Spraying into the carb will lean out the oil a little. But while running off the carb clearner fuel mix, the VRO was steadily delivering the correct oil ratio to the engine.

    I know this is an old video, but, thanks man. My '98 115 evinrude had sat up for 7 months, and when I finally got it back on the water, it was only on 3 cylinders. I threw a couple of fixes at it all at once - plugs, new primer bulb, cleaned fuel filter, and this trick with spraying the idle circuit jets. I'm not 100% sure which of these, or a combination of them, worked, but it fired off on the first bump of the key. Ran all day with it, and everything was great - so thanks.

    5:16 See the white fitting with the fuel line attached to it right in the center? That's a fuel screen/filter. Unscrew that and take a look at it while you're doing this. Should always just be hand tight. If its tighter than that, make sure to only put back on about 1/8 of a turn past hand tight when reinstalling. Those are often the culprits. They'll be black inside the screen when dirty. I suppose you can clean them in a pinch, but I always keep a couple of them handy and just replace them. Those are usually a bigger problem than the carbs.

  • @DanielScheerHowTo
    @DanielScheerHowTo  12 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Just make sure to always have the correct oil mixture. Several people did not understand that this engine pumps the oil automatically from a separate oil tank. One should never run a two stroke engine without the correct mixture of oil in the fuel.

Also sometimes it wont reach full speed it will be at full throttle but only going half speed. Thanks your video was help full.

    Hi, I have a similar Motor (225) like you have ! When you look between the carburetors, there is this red square with a gray cap on . Remove the cap, and you see a valve Stem just like from a tire ! Just blow some air through this valve with a compressor, and it will blow all dirt out of your carburetor ! Than mix one can of SeaFoam with one gallon ethanol free gas , run it through your motor ! This will clean the jets and take care of carbon build up ! This saved my past weekend !

    Some good info, but on a two stroke, you might want to manual clean carbs as if a cylinder is not getting the right mix of oil and fuel you can score the dry cylinder and do huge amount of damage. just a note. Good video!

    Heads up first check the filter to the fuel pump assembly right there in the front..middle..when you disessemble it its is shaped like a cone.Also you should replace your fuel water separator..maybe the illustrator already did this..But that should be your first course of action..And its relatively inexpensive..start simple first...then move on...I have a four year degree in marine mechanics guys...make sure you got a clean non restrictive fuel flow first.Fuel primer bulbs screw up too...If your running with a vro disconnected and mixing your own fuel This video is not for you..His oil injection system is operational...so you wont lean out and blow up your engine.

    • @michaeljacobs2570
      @michaeljacobs2570 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      also no needle valves..These carbs have oraphaces..tiny brass screws that have a certain size hole for flow ...They are your high speed jets..lower ones in carbs.easy to remove with skinny screw driver...clean and reinstall...Power tune and fogger was designed for proper maintance so you can avoid this.

    • @tompoirier4918
      @tompoirier4918 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      michael, I've got an old two stroke outboard that i could get to turn over two weeks ago and idle, but after sitting for two weeks now won't catch. do you think it could be sticking valves/venturi in the carbs? nothing else changed.... or could the gas (with stabilizer) in it have gone bad that quickly?

    • @michaeljacobs2570
      @michaeljacobs2570 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Make sure you still have spark...harbor freight sells spark testers cheap..few bucks...then check your plugs..are they wet or dry? Does the gas smell stale if they are wet..The info I stated above was specific to that series and models..that have high speed orafices.I have seen the foam from the cowlings (engine covers) disengrate and get sucked up into the carbs and end up in the orafices..Start always by making sure you have gas getting to the plugs and good spark.go from there..If an engine has been sitting for a long time..yrs...not just months changing the fuel pump is usually indicated too.....

    • @tompoirier4918
      @tompoirier4918 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm thinking a carb cleanup is necessary. the foam lining did get chewed up recently, that would explain the fuel/foam coming back out of the choke plate.... I replaced the plugs (old ones were wet) and have a clean blue spark now, but still no catch. I'm hoping a carb rebuild does it; gotta love the "free boat"....

    • @conlanbartley1636

      So I got a 99 Johnson 115… ur saying they have no needle valves at all?

  • @DanielScheerHowTo
    @DanielScheerHowTo  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    If it's choked and not trying the fire up after 5 to 6 pulls... I would squirt a little in. I would also definitely change the lower unit oil before using the motor. Walmart sells a Pennzoil quart with a handy pump to fill it bottom up. After that you can just use regular 80/90 gear oil. I need to make a video of that too! LOL

  • @DanielScheerHowTo
    @DanielScheerHowTo  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @bigdaddygato Yes you could try that; but that would be pretty strong, and you want it to run awhile.. it needs time to work. I think I used about a 3 part gas to 1 part cleaner. Just realize that this motor is a two stroke and requires oil to be mixed with the fuel. This engine pulls from a dedicated 2stroke oil tank. If your motor is a two stroke and requires the oil to be premixed... then you have to include the proper ratio in your mix of gasoline/cleaner. Don't run it without oil!

      Watched all of 2min just to see what the carburetor looked like on an outboard. I know cars and trucks never messed with an out board after about an hour of cleaning and starting it over n over to burn the gunk out she now fires up every time. Just takes a little know-how and effort and a person can accomplish about anything. My wife is happy as a clam now. Now it's time for a beer and a bowl and some TV cause it's been a day. Thanks again.

      I just got my first outboard, 01' 30hp merc 3cylinder 4stroke. I've been going through it, water pump housing/impeller, fuel filter, oil/oil filter, gear oil, spark plugs, etc. Need to clean the carbs but I've never messed with carbs. Looking forward when I winterize it each year, how do I go about running gas out of the carbs to maintain them, what's that procedure like

  • @DanielScheerHowTo
    @DanielScheerHowTo  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @MrFishaddict707 To be honest... I only do it when I notice a problem. Usually when I haven't run the engine in a few weeks. I figure the fuel must be evaporating leaving the two stroke oil and varnish behind which clogs some of the carb's internals. So I run a concentrated mix until it starts running smooth again. It couldn't hurt adding it to the fuel as per label, but I think there's enough alcohol in modern gas to keep the varnish at bay... if you run the motor often!

    • @hl6963
      @hl6963 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If your Johnson outboard is smoking all the time, it could have something to do with the oil, I have a 2000 sea swirl striper with an 150 Johnson and mine smoked a whole lot and kept stalling out, brought it to my mechanic and it happened to be the valve in the oil pump was broken and when I filled the oil reservoir the check valve wasn’t working so the oil went directly into the carburetors filling them up, thus causing a lot of smoke and making the motor stall out. This is a common problem with these boats

      +Loc Lam Becareful to use starter fluid with oil, so as not to damage the motor. There are several products for cleaning carburetors like seafoam, I prefer Berrymans Chemtool. If you get is running right, I suggest a monthly reminder to run the engine... just set it up for the first Saturday in your smartphone. good luck!

    Got it at West Marine for under $40. It's actually a selector valve, but can shut off the fuel also.

    thanks for the info ,, good video,, same procedure on a 2 stroke Johnson im assuming?

    • @DanielScheerHowTo
      @DanielScheerHowTo  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      tudo cervera This is a 2 stroke engine... but the oil is automatically added separately by the engine's VRO pump. If you are premixing in the tank... make sure you use oil in your cleaning mix or serious damage will occur.

    Hey mr , r u running your boat motor with just carb cleaner

    • @DanielScheerHowTo
      @DanielScheerHowTo  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The motor mixes oil into the fuel automatically from a separate oil tank. Many people disconnect this and mix in the fuel tank. I like my engines to run as they were designed, so I do not bypass the oil mix system. Running two stoke motors without oil in the mix will destroy the engine.
