Mercury outboard side bowl back drag carburetors. Here we clean and rebuild one of these carburetors common to many vintage Mercury outboard motors, and explain why it’s called a back drag carburetor and what that means. This particular carburetor is for a 1982 Mercury 40hp outboard. The gasket and rebuild kit I purchased is from Mercury/Quicksilver and is part number 1395-5109-1.
