    Great video, very well set out.
    As much as genuine gasket/rebuild kits are 3-4 times the cost of generic kits, they are so much less likely to give you issues. I've had problems with Amazon or eBay gasket kits, leaks and even incorrect cuts, the last being the engine pulse hole that drives the fuel pump diaphragm on the side of the carb was covered in the generic kit, so had to cut out a hole in the engine to carb gasket. It shouldn't matter, but for whatever reason, genuine is the only way to go. For seats and needles, bowl etc generic is fine in my experience, but as nobody wants to be endlessly pulling their engine to try and start it, or to have it die as the fuel pump diaphragm is leaking, do yourself the favour and spend the bucks on a genuine kit. I look after a few old 25 twin 2-stroke Mercs at our local club, and would rather spend my own money on motors that aren't even mine and buy a genuine kit so I'm not having to mess with the carbs all the time. Boats sit around and have fuel issues enough without playing roulette with cheapo gaskets as well, but to each their own!

    I picked up a kit on Amazon to rebuild mine for $20, and the carb main mount gasket is wrong so for another 12 bucks I got a sheet of blue siliconized gasket material at Oreillys, used an xacto blade and a scissors and a ball point pen to make a new gasket for one that didn't exist. Seriously, the motor came without one and one of the nuts was loose as a goose.

    While it will work both ways , I can suggest when reinstaling the upper primer cover that putting the "vent" or weep hole on the primer cover facing out instead of in , so you can visualy see when the carb is mounted on the engine that if your primer diaphram ever develops a leak again, if it does it will spray out the weep port out to the side making it easy to see where the fault is . that orientation is the way it was orignaly instaled .

      Some aftermarket kits are pretty good. Sierra makes some good kits. Most of the amazon one are junk. I do get them but only because how convenient the shipping times are. It’s definitely worth it to get the better ones. Thanks for watching.

    Did a new Needle come with that kit? It didn't in the one I bought! Unusual, I thought!

      I had to go back and look but I think I didn’t. You’re right it is unusual. There are many kits on Amazon and most are universal. There might be one more specific to the model year.

      @@thesmallengineguy6924 I did do back and look at the expanded view of the contents and it does not show that there is one. The same for the others that I researched. The Carburetor Body dies not have a replaceable Needle Seat, but you would think a rebuild kit would have the Needle. I'm having an issue with the Carb flooding, due to the fuel leaking past the seat! Adjustment of the float is correct, and the kit comes with a new float.

      @@edwardrinehart2125 try cutting a q-tip in half. Putting it in the end of a drill then down the seat hole with a bit of carb cleaner on it. Sometimes polishing down the hole like that will clear it out. I’ve had success with doing that in the past.

      depends on the version, but may be a turn the primer knob type? If not, then it's the throttle closed grub screw.

      Good eye John. Just distracted from filming is the excuse I’m going with. It will fit and start but it won’t run great. Think one is for the 9.9-15 and one is for the 6-8. Thanks for watching

      Ok I was just wondering if you knew something I didn’t. I cannot seem to get my 9.9 running right. I was thinking I was missing the fuel pump but after seeing this I know I’m not. Could a cracked overflow tube affect how it runs?

    • @thesmallengineguy6924
      @thesmallengineguy6924  ปีที่แล้ว

      Shouldn’t effect things that much. Have you tried looking at coils/plugs/compression? I’ve been hung up on a carb for days that turned out to be a cracked coil. Showed spark so I figured it was fine. Bet I pulled that carb apart 10 times.

    • @JohnSpence-ij8xd
      @JohnSpence-ij8xd ปีที่แล้ว

      Replaced plugs and it has spark. Didn’t really pay much attention to coil. Cleaned carb because it seemed to be starving for fuel now it seems to be needed more air.

    Hey man im having a starting problem with my 9.9 2 stroke mercury year 95. I disassemble clean and change all the gasket but then still wont start. New gas and primer. Im stuck! Also what does that tiny ball bearing do? I dont remember seeing that on mine. Thanks!

    • @thesmallengineguy6924
      @thesmallengineguy6924  ปีที่แล้ว

      Little ball acts as check valve( one way valve). Squirt gas in the carburetor and try to start it and if it starts and stops you have a carb problem. If not I suggest looking places spark compression or even timing. Hopefully this helps. Thanks for watching

    Hey! I have a 2003 Mercury 15HP 2 stroke that I’m struggling with. I’ve rebuilt the carb multiple times now and I’m still seeing gas in the air take when I pump the fuel take bulb. Float, stem and fork have all been replaced.
    It’s coming up from the bowl around a brass stem inside the airtake.
    Any thoughts why this might be?

    • @thesmallengineguy6924
      @thesmallengineguy6924  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Russell. I’m not sure. Sounds like something’s missing. Is the prime bulb getting hard and staying that way. Sounds like needle and seat getting stuck. You can confirm the float is closed by turning the carb upside down and blowing into the gas inlet to see that the needle is closed. No air should pass until you turn the carb right side then air will pass. Little piece of gas line that you can blow in will help. Hopefully you can get it fixed. Thanks.

      @@thesmallengineguy6924 thank you for the quick response. The bulb gets semi-stiff but the more I pump it then more fuel comes out the intake. I’m planning to remove the carb again and checking the float distance again and try what you mentioned. The entire carb has new gaskets, float and needle valve so it’s very strange.

    • @JustJigit
      @JustJigit ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Russell, did you ever figure out the issue? I’m struggling with the same issue. Gas coming out of the of the float into the intake when pumping the primer gas bulb. When I turn the carb upside down then the bulb holds firm and no leak. The minute I turn it right side up then seems like the needle/float drops and gas starts to overflow again. I can get the engine to start and run but overflow of gas will flood the motor. Ask I am typing and explaining sounds like a float issue. There are no cracks in the float.

      @@JustJigit hey! The fix for me was replacing the float, jet pin and float bracket. Make sure to review the mercury manual for measuring the float distance…it’s makes a HUGE difference and may be your problem. Hope this helps!
