He's young, he's a great athlete, he's paid big bucks and the Brewers would do anything to make sure he got healthy again, and they would wait as long as it takes. Before he had no issues putting alot of weight on the right leg, where in turn he could literally snap his wrist through with the bat, making his signature swing and how he became the player we knew. Since? He seems to be treating his right leg alot more gingerly. He isnt getting the stride he once did. Its clear his mechanics are still there tho. Yelich definitely has a downward trajectory on his swing. You have to hit the ball perfectly just below the equator to generate good lift and spin. That style swing is simply not conducive to a high fly ball rate. When it works, he'll hit the best HRs anyone's ever seen. When it doesn't work he'll pop up or roll over everything all day. "Cutting" the ball doesn't work if your swing isn't at 100%.

His knee injury cased his stance to change, which as a result lead to a lot more ground balls. He led the league this season in gb%. Regardless of what fans say, he improved a lot this season. This is the best we've seen from him since 2019. He just needs to adjust his mechanics and bring up his launch angle. 5°.

Most shocking to me is that he has not adjusted to the league’s pitchers adjusting to him. He crushed, they adapted, he sucks. But if he’d take the same approach and retool his swing He could bounce back. But once a superstar….many get in thier own heads and believe they know it all and the approach that got them there is still correct in spite of years of evidence to the contrary.

Yelich, Rendon, bellinger, Corbin, Strasburg (even though he hasn’t played but like six games since then. 2019 the the last year this group and many other players were showing signs of greatness, they should all be in thier prime. But injuries man, sitting out for half a season can completely derail the rest of a career.

I checked the stats. He got hurt after his last 2nd place MVP year, so he was limited the season after. The numbers are down, but he still has a .360 OBP the last couple of seasons, which is Scott Hatteberg sabre metrics level. So he's still a good and useful player.

Although you aren’t wrong, Hatteberg never got paid what Yelich is making, even with adjusted inflation 😂 Not that it has anything to do w this, but just pointing out that’s a large price tag for a hatteberg-esq player. Not that it’s his issue, but more so the upper management of the Brewers. Lol

Couldn't believe the Brewers made that move. But then again they also traded Josh Hader when they didn't need to and lost all their momentum afterwards. I seriously wonder what the hell their front office is thinking sometimes.

when they are young, players can get away with a swing that has hitches, holes, and less than ideal mechanics but as they age those issues have a tendency to progress into coping mechanisms that expand. watch his swing as the video goes along the last couple yrs it has become loopier, less fluid and less compact.

We can theorize, but something to consider is the metrics now employed in the game. What happened to .300 hitters ? They are rare now. The shifts are particularly tough on the LH hitters. Do you remember when hard hit balls up the middle were hits ? Now they just fall prey to the shift. I was watching the Brewers tonite and Yelich led off with a 499’ yard ball. Granted at Coors Field. But that is a poke. Can someone who knows baseball mechanics better than I refute that perhaps he has a top hand dominate swing that keeps him from getting lift on the ball ?

Playing at a star-level in major league baseball is hard to do once you have a serious injury as Yelich had. Knee problems are bad enough, but add a back injury, and things become much more difficult.
Until you have had serious back injuries, you never realize what a big part your back plays in everything you do...sometimes even turning a doorknob can be difficult.

  • @marcoslaureano5562

It's his swing - his swing has been totally different since the back problems. Back problems has ruined many a players chances at a Hall of Fame career, most notably in my mind, Don Mattingly and David Wright. It just zaps the strength from their swing and actually changes their stroke. Look at the difference between Yelich's swing during his MVP season and the year after - then look at his swing now - it's a bit different. It used to be so effortless, now it's like he's overcompensating. It's sad - I honestly thought he was the next Robin Yount for Milwaukee.

I would like to see a little more fire out of him, but I think that's just more about his personality. What's so painful as a Brewer fan is we have a history of players like Yelich who look to be world super stars and then nothing.
