Yes! I had a similar experience at Wrigley when Bonds was chasing 755 HR. Bonds steps up to the plate...and the booing was surreal; it was so intense...that it really glorified his greatness. The focus every person had on the man was unparalleled...it was like a scene from the Mighty Casey. Then he proceeded to hit a ball so hard...that it looked like a pop-fly to right, and it kept rising and rising, and it simply got lost in the sky...we couldn't see it land! And like you said, the boos got even more intense as he rounded the bases...but so did the gasps of disbelief and amazement! Barry was already an all-time great; but big-head Barry was, cheating and ass-holery notwithstanding, the greatest single-player show in modern baseball history...better than McGwire, better than Bo, better than Reggie, better than anyone...

A Maryland native, in the early 1990's I sent a note to the Orioles front office explaining what a fan my 12 year old son was of Cal Ripken Jr. I requested that if they could send him an autographed Cal baseball it would send my boy to the moon. I sent the request in and enclosed a twenty dollar bill to cover their costs. About 3 weeks later we received an autographed Cal ball in the mail, gave it to my son and the look on his face was worth a million bucks.
3 days later we received another box from the Orioles, this one a bit larger, and opened it to find another Cal Ripken signed ball but with some wonderful extras. It was inside a beautiful clear jeweled box, a hand written note to my son from the man himself, two box seat tickets on the third base line to an upcoming Orioles-Red Sox game and my twenty dollar bill back. My boy came undone with joy! Later I had a frame made for the note from Cal, the 20 dollar bill and the two ticket stubs from the game. My boy still has the frame and ball to this day, displayed on the mantle piece at his home.
I will never forget the kindness and generosity from the Orioles front office and certainly Cal Jr. What a class act!
I just hope at least once while a player Mr. Bonds went out of his way to fill a young boy's heart with joy as well.

Barry Bonds is nothing compared to Cal Ripkin Jr. sir. If any kid looked up to Bonds as a kid they definitely should of learned their lesson by now about the person he was on and off the field. MLB isn't doing it right with the steroids testing still. An 80 game suspension is absolutely fucking laughable to these guys making $40M a year. Cal is one of the most respectable baseball players of all time. Bonds is an absolute disgrace. Yes we've all made our mistakes, but most of us own up to them and pay the price. Guess Bonds' father was an absolutely disgrace as well if he drove onto the College Baseball field and threatened the coach himself. We need Dana White and USADA in the MLB or Dana White needs to hold a seminar for all managers of the MLB, NBA & NFL. Although I think the NFL and the NBA do it right most of the time.

The ball landed in the stands above the Padre bullpen, but someone in the bull pen grabbed a warm-up ball and threw that on the field to make it look like no one wanted it. It's not really even about what his father did. It's the fact that the kid takes full advantage of it... because the kid knows he can get away with it.
I *expect* that a parent will defend their child. But when their child isn't a real child... more like an an adult child... then I'd consider him an entitled momma's boy.
There are steroid users who are inducted into the hall of fame. And Barry is not one of them. While I won't pretend to know why that is... I would think that there are some mitigating circumstances that the 'rules for induction' have been overlooked. Perhaps the reason he hasn't been inducted lies within those perimeters?
I don't like cheaters. But maybe their circumstances are not nearly as serious or baseball-life-altering as Barry's. I don't know, as I haven't researched it. Let's face it, though.... the home run crown is pretty much the holy grail of sports achievements. Perceived cheating for that kind of bling WILL have the court of public opinion looking for torches & pitchforks.

The attitude and behavior of the public and media was brutal. The front office was just as vicious.
Personally, I don’t blame Barry Bonds or any other professional athlete in their era for not being so trusting or friendly with the public or media.
It’s easy for judgmental types to cry about what Barry Bonds and others did or did not do…But, how many of you have a clue of what these men were forced to endure. Most of you would certainly crumble under the pressure.

We were standing by the dugout when the players took the field to warm up . As Bonds approached , I asked him if he could say ‘ hello ‘ to the kids and maybe some words of encouragement . He looked at me as if I had asked him to donate a kidney . Didn’t say anything , warmed up 10 feet from the kids and never acknowledged them . As we were led off the field , I sarcastically said ‘ Thanks for your time , Superstar ‘ , he looked over and shot me the bird . What a world-class Ass -Hole !

    • @jt8038
      @jt8038 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

There doesn't need to be an asterisk for the players who juiced because all steroids do is increase strength and stamina. Yes stamina is a big deal because of the 162 game season but strength is not that important for being a great player. Steroids do not increase hand eye coordination which is everything in baseball. Proof Barry didn't need juice to be great. As a pirate before the juice he is still the only player who is in the 40/40 club 40 home runs and 40 stolen bases so all the steroids did was increase his strength which he already had and slowed him down. So in my opinion he became a more powerful hitter and a less productive base runner. Regardless his choice to use he's a hof'er no matter what

People often say that it's self-evidently stupid that MLB's greatest hitter and HR champ is not in the HOF. But they amazingly fail to recognize that his status as the GOAT is a complete sham. So this fact combined with his poor character completely justifies his exclusion in the Hall, and all but demands it.
Few people seem to realize that Bonds started lowkey becoming Super Barry in 1999, a year in which he missed the first two months due to having surgery on his left elbow/triceps tendon. Amazingly he came back alight, still finishing 34/83 power numbers. Bear in mind he is already 34 years old at this time.
At this time I could see he was suddenly better than he ever was and was impressed, but wasn't suspicious, seeing as Bonds did not hitherto have the physique of a typical steroid user. But he had just witnessed two inferior hitters, McGwire and Sosa, captivate the nation and 'resurrect the game' from the post-strike malaise or whatever people say.
Over the next two years following the 99 comeback, he quickly ascended towards the most astonishing offensive run in baseball history between 01 and 04.
What separated Bonds' career arc from most everyone else is that he reverted to putting up black ink numbers in his late 30s. As with everyone else, his 30s started out with a 5 year lull, where he was no longer leading the league in major offensive categories. It is basically unquestionable that without PEDs Bonds doesn't successively set career highs in HR in his mid 30s, and instead slowly or sharply declines a bit around the turn of the century. Depending on how sharply, it is conceivable, not least due to his attitude, that he flames out with the Giants and warrants a 'change of scenery' trade to resurrect his career, or simply fades into obscurity.
In other words the reason everyone considers Bonds the GOAT hitter, or least no worse than Babe Ruth (the two are tied in WAR) is that he used steroids to annihilate the natural decline of age. It is pretty clear that he started using steroids no later than '99 when he suddenly began hitting HR at a higher clip than ever immediately after having elbow surgery. That just doesn't happen. Without PEDs, Bonds isn't even remotely close to Babe Ruth.
This is why he's not in the HOF in spite of being 'the best hitter ever.' He's not in fact the best hitter ever, so the objection that his exclusion taints the HOF is completely daft and worthless. Had he never used PEDs at all - in other words, had he actually flamed out in his early 30s - he would have still been a run-of-the-mill HOF outfielder, but the ethical element really demands that he be punished.
We have been seeing a wide variety of cheating scandals since the 94 strike, and steroids began at least in the mid 80s with the Bash Brothers. Arod was juicing literally since high school, when he became a power hitter overnight. His career is likewise tainted, and the HOF is not tainted by ignoring his great numbers, just as with Bonds.
Consider the career arc of a similar freak talent like Mike Trout. You can already see Trout's black ink potential starting to sail away from him as he approaches age 30. He has recently had 2 years cut short due to injury in '21 and that absurd virus situation in '20. Based on historical precedent and the way the human body works, he's most probably done leading the league in OPS and the question of whether he is at last the GOAT ballplayer is up to his desire and work ethic, that is to say, whether he can approach in his 30s what he did in his 20s. If he starts using PEDs, it would be a fluke if he didn't.
So there you go. Stop respecting video game numbers that are complete and utter bull****.

Not a huge sports fan, but am in Atlanta. I consider he stole an irreplaceable trophy from a groundbreaking man of superlative character - Hank Aaron. Aaron endured what’s African Americans who made a way for Barry, indescribable racism & disrespect. But he carried himself with quiet dignity & a smile in times of celebration & greeting others. Barry had to have great talent to see & contact the ball as he did. However, his cheating stole more than extra cash or games. He actually stole a humble heroes incomparable historical honor. A kind of sports stolen valor. But one difference in this type of valor stealing, is that it’s not just raising oneself to an undeserved position, but it is also lowering the “valor” of others. In my mind, that can never be overlooked .

7 MVP awards is insane, but Bonds should definitely have 1 more. In '91, Bonds finished 2nd in MVP to Terry Pendleton (who had a great year). Their basic stats were really similar in totals (HRs, runs, RBIs). Pendleton had a solid advantage in AVG, but he didn't even hit .320.
Bonds blew him away in SBs, walks, OBP. And Bonds won a GG while Pendleton didn't (though he was a good fielder). Pendleton wasn't even an all star that year.
Bonds lost that MVP for 2 reasons: First, he had won the previous year and that automatically gets your current performance discounted, and Second...people hated the guy. If you have to chose between a jerk and a nice guy (with everything else being equal) you'll kick the jerk to the curb.

When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Milky Ways in his hands without paying.

Bonds was amazing in that World Series. He got on base 21 times in 30 plate appearances with 4 HR in 17 at bats. Such a shame that they blew that game 6 lead.

Character, integrity thing’s like that mean a lot. He’s not the only guy who’s lacking in that category but it seems to overshadowed his accomplishments in baseball. Following the golden rule is best no matter if you’re a baseball great or a regular person. If he ever meets Jesus he’ll be a different person.

Derek Jeter didn’t have the most ability, but the man’s leadership anchored the greatest dynasty I got to see. Meanwhile, Bonds had all the stats, all the tools, and couldn’t be on a World Series winning team because he couldn’t lead. I’ll take a Derek Jeter a million times over a Barry Bonds, Bryce Harper, or Manny Machado even. Winning requires intangibles and raw talent and stats is not the end all be all.

Barry Bonds "owning up to it" means very little when you consider that, before doing so, he had nothing more to lose in the baseball world. He himself said he felt like he had a "death sentence," so if you continue that metaphor, it's a guy on death row admitting to doing it since he's doomed anyway and is just looking for mercy.

Astros still have their WS title even after it was proven they had cheated. So I see no reason as to why Bonds shouldn’t be in the Hall and Pete Rose unbanned from baseball

Actually a very informative video. I for one still think Bond's body armor helped him more than Balco. Bonds was using body armor prior, but got approved in 2001 by mlb by medical clearance to use a higher grade of armor. MLB only granted this to a few players, mostly star players.
