I was in the Boston Children’s Hospital waiting room during the ‘03 season. I was in and out of it but I realized just by voice alone, I was sitting next to Pedro Martinez! I was really shy but I really looked up to him and asked for a signature. He was really kind and signed the back of my “medical history” paper and told me to “hang in there.” As a 9-year old now 28, I’m still so grateful for such a small act of kindness!

I played baseball with some kids in the Dominican and it's no wonder they're so good. Looked exactly like the B-roll shown too. We used broom sticks and bottle caps in a little park space where these 7yo kids were crushing nearly full speed pitches. I was a decent year round baseball player growing up and still only hit about half as many pitches. They just had crazy good coordination and literally nothing else to do for fun except the games they'd make up. Even just making it to highschool league baseball is a huge accomplishment, it takes far more than just talent.

I think Pedro probably understood that anything gained by steroids would actually have been a detriment to his pitching. He was so effective because of the movement on his pitches, achieved by the whip like action of his arm and wrist. Over-developing those muscles would have probably flattened out his fastball. You want an example of what I'm taking about, watch some of the few clips of Mark Fidrych in his rookie year. That lanky fella had just crazy movement on his pitches, even when they were down in the zone. That's a god given gift that steroids can only hinder, not help.

Maddux used to get fastballs off corner called strike, he wasn't only one, but Braves pitchers, in particular, I remembered that. Pedro had nasty curve and great change up to go along with 97 mph fastball. Major league hitters can hit 97 mph pitches

I believe Pedro wasn’t on PEDs, but in general an athlete being really skinny doesn’t automatically mean he isn’t on PEDs. Any athlete can for instance take testosterone and if they aren’t into lifting weights, their physical appearance won’t alter much but they will still get performance enhancement in pretty much any physical activity.

I'd say for about a 6 or 7yr span Pedro was among the greatest pitchers of all time but he kind of fell off hard really fast after the 2004 world series and then he left the red sox and he kind of just seemed to fall to irrelevancy until his retirement

@@BendyDH I mean I think you’re assessment and memory of Pedro after 04 are really off. He only played 4 more years after that, the first 2 years he was an all star with the Mets in 05 and 06. The first year he was 15-8 with a 2.82 era and 210 strike outs. In 06 he started strong but battled injuries and had to be put on a strict innings count and ended the year 9-8. He was hurt the years after that with the Mets and Phillies and basically didn’t really play

@@BendyDH He was already starting to break down from the heavy innings load he had during his Red Sox tenure. On top of that, I think things apparently got to his head a bit. According to stories from that time, he had a HUGE entourage that followed him around everywhere, even in the Red Sox clubhouse. I think his laser-sharp focus wavered at least in part from that.
