    First time viewer here. Here are my concerns with your review. I believe the main purpose of using a back up is incase we lose our photos locally. Computer crash, home fire, lost phone, etc. What I didn’t hear you address was how easy it was to retrieve our photos from Amazon and Google? Or if Google/Amazon raised their prices and we needed to move to another provider? How does each store our files? Do they maintain our file structure? Keep our file names and data for our photos? Those are important questions we need to know when picking back-up service provider.

      @tamarunitamaruni4724 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      he did an incredible overview. it may take another search to get those... but he provided data that you're NOT gonna see from the providers, i.e., the drawbacks. it's such a dense area to learn from the bottom up in one video

    • @jeffk9845
      @jeffk9845 ปีที่แล้ว

      It really depends on what you want. I don't think he was talking about straight file backup, but a service to manage your photos so you can search and find the ones you want. I use Google photos and it sorts them by date and doesn't have a file structure. You could keep the file structure if you used Google Drive instead of Google Photos.

    The main thing I use Amazon Drive for is displaying my photo's and video's on my big screen HDTV. If you have a Fire Stick, it has a PHOTO app that automatically connects to your Amazon Drive photo's and video's. This makes it great to bore the life out of your guests just like you did in the olden days of slide shows and home movies.

      Can I decide which photos show on my fire TV screen or are they random. What happens when I decide to delete a photo purposely? Will it still show up in Amazon photos and fire tv?

      @@pamparker1860 You can choose random or date up loaded. If you delete a photo it will no longer show up on Fire TV. It is placed in a deleted folder on Amazon photo's for 30 days in case you change your mind.

    My wife scraps with these photos. In Amazon it allows you to look at your photos and then very quickly print and if you're a prime member for a cheaper price than Costco that will be sent to you free and the pictures will be delivered to you free that is a big advantage that Amazon has.

    FYI... Amazon Photo (prime) does offer PAID video upload and storage. (with unlimited resolution) While I was on vacation in Philippines I needed a safe storage place for my videos as well as my photos. I opted to pay $60 for a year for 1 TB of storage. Other than slow internet to upload them, I was able to upload my videos, and it made me feel safe knowing that for $60 my precious videos were backed up. BUT, that being said. I did not know my Google account would also store videos! I shoot mostly in 4K. But I do also have a 360 camera that shoots in 5.7K. so for me, I think Amazon is the better choice. (for now) As always Steve, thanks for the Vlog!

    I use both in addition to iCloud Photos! I love Google Photos for Autoawesomes that I wouldn't have without it, and I use Amazon Photos as another backup and as I have an iPhone, everything gets backed up to that as well. I don't take professional photos, but I take a LOT of photos (read: I took 304 photos of my dog the other day), so I like to have backups!

    My biggest issue with Amazon Photos is that it does not allow you to tell the app when the facial recognition is wrong... it has been proven that Amazon’s facial recognition fails people of color and often confuses different people for being the same person. I have tons of photos on Amazon where facial recognition has identified the wrong friend and I have no way to tell the app this and organize the photos correctly. I’m interested in testing out Google to see if I experience the same issues there.

    As of December 2020 ** Newsflash** that may affect some of the great advice here, I imagine: Google will, as of June 2021 be including photos uploaded AFTER that date in the 15gb free storage provided. That means Google is no longer unlimited, even considering their 16mp limitation. This is a game changer (in the negative sense) for me. So I started looking at Amazon's unlimited photos and realized why it was that I never jumped on that bandwagon before. That is, there is no application for Macs running Mac OS X versions earlier than 10.12, which locks me out. Sad, because the computer I use is still the most powerful computer I have every owned, and meets every need for me, but it is slowly becoming obsolete simply because certain software houses simply stop including 10.11 capabilities, no matter how meager they might be.

    I use both. Here in the UK we don’t have facial recognition with Google, but Amazon Photos does, however, it’s not very accurate and there is no way to make amendments. For instance, it mixes up my Grandson & Granddaughter. There are a lot of comments/complaints about this on the Amazon user forum.
    My favourite feature with Amazon is how it regularly displays photos from ‘This Day’ in previous years.

    • @tonym3933
      @tonym3933 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm in the UK and have been using Google Photos for many years now, it does have facial recognition and it's not a new feature, so perhaps you have the option disabled? In terms of mixing up photos - I'm not sure about Amazon - but on Google, you can tell it when it's incorrectly identified someone, and correct it quite easily. The more times you do this, the better it gets at future photos.

    The thing we need to learn about is where to backup raw image files. This is not to view files online but simply as a way that if the raw files on your local computer becomes corrupted you have a method of recovering these files and saving your photography business. If you are not aware already raw files are humongous. Is Amazon S3 Glacier what we should be looking at?

    thanks again for another great video. for me, I use both. They're both so user-friendly and fast that I like having both just in case something happens to the other but mostly just because I like to see what each format does with the collection. If I had to pick one, it's definitely Amazon. I pay for Amazon Prime anyway and an additional $20 year means I'm covered with all photos and videos. My only small beef with Amazon is that when I create an album and add photos/videos to the album, I'd like for the photos or videos to be removed from the main storage. Also, I don't like how deleting the images from the main area means it is also deleted from the album.

When I want to add an older photo to FB, Instagram, Mercar, Gallery comes up making only a fraction of my photos and only 4 of my photo albums (folders). Great video... As always... Amazon is my pick because I take everything in raw. Now, it is under 16G, but the next camera I buy will almost certainly have raw in excess of 16G. One question, why have you not done a review of free, or relatively inexpensive, photo editing software? Lightroom is $10 a month for the rest of your life... I do not mind spending $100+ and then using that software for the next 5 or 10 years. But, $1,200 for 10 years is pricy... Also, it looks like Win 10 Photo App does more editing than either Amazon or Google. I would encourage you to add that one next time you do this comparison.

    Oh Noooo, Mr. Billlllllll! Sorry, I had to say it.
    I currently use Google photos and have over 58,000 photos on there. I was just informed that in June I will have to start paying for my cloud storage. I am upset because when I started using Google photos, they stated it was free unlimited. They lied like my daddy. So now I have to think about using a different storage, but I wanted to keep everything in one place.
    1. Should I or even could I transfer everything I have from Google photos over to Amazon since I have Prime anyway?
    2. Or should I stop syncing google photos in May and just start my photos new to sync onto Amazon starting June 2021?
    3. If I start using Amazon to sync photos, can I keep the old google photos cloud or would it go away if I no longer use it?

  • @FaustV1

    THE BIGGEST DIFFERENCE IMO FOR ORGANIZATION IS THAT AMAZON PHOTO'S SEPERATE YOUR "CAMERA" "CUSTOM FOLDER" AND "SCREENSHOT." Google does NOT do this and instead puts all screenshots in "Camera" and you have to create a custom album to move sets of photos into.

    Thanks for the info... My mom died about a year and a half ago, and she had made about 100 printed photo albums. I am scanning them to put them in the family vault feature of Amazon Photo to share with my sisters. I am very happy with it for this purpose but WHY DOESN'T AMAZON PHOTOS let you name the photo?? I want to be able to name the photo with a caption that was on the back. No way to do this?! For example I scan a photo with my mom's dad and her uncle, but I can't say "Joe and Steve, 1935" or whatever. Do you know a way around this?

    Would it be too confusing to use both, and if using both google & Amazon, does it or will that take up my phone memory if stored to cloud?

    Steve, thanks for the review. I really liked it.
    Is there a way to PREVENT Google Photos from deleting photos as an "in sync" process when I delete a photo from my iPhone? Is there a setting we have been missing?
    Explanation. My wife and I just moved from Google photos to Amazon photos for our cloud storage because as we deleted photos from our iPhones (to create more space), the photos also were deleted from our Google Photos but NOT from Amazon photos. (Grandbaby photos...had my wife not earlier installed the Amazon Photos, there may have been some significant weeping and wailing.)
    Appreciate your thoughts.
    Thanks.

    When you imported your Google photos to Amazon, the person identification was done from scratch by the Amazon app, or it read the metadata/info from Google photos?

    I use both services, but I use Amazon Photos as my cloud storage for all my photos I take with my DSLR camera. I have about 120 GB of photos in RAW format stored on Amazon Photos. The only thing is that from my smartphone I can't seem to open full screen my RAW format photos. I can see them as thumbnails but when I try to open one of them it says that something went wrong. Any idea? The thing about the mpx limit on google photos I didn't know about I don't really like. I would like to store automatically on amazon photos instead of google photos. I'll look at the IFTTT app if there's something with amazon photos. Any other ideas about that? anyone?

    Steve thanks for this video. Question: was just fooling around with the automated slide shows that Amazon puts together and offers you. Pretty cool, you can edit the selected photos and little else best I can tell. Still, could be useable for social media. Do you know of any way to export that little slideshow video out of Amazon photos and into say Instagram reels? (or even Stories or a regular IG post?) Any help greatly appreciated.

    There's one thing about Amazon Photos that's driving me crazy. I basically NEED the thing if I want to have Alexa give me a slideshow in show mode. BUT, how to control WHICH photos Amazon has access to. I do NOT want it to make everything on my devices available online, only the specific ones I want in my slideshow. Since there seems to be no way to do that, it's one of the first things I *disable* on a Fire tablet.

    I have been using Google Photos to store my pictures but the ability to store full resolution on my Prime account is very important to me. After starting to use Prime I discovered I can not add a description to my photos in Prime, I can in Google. However, when my family shared photos are downloaded metadata (description) I added is stripped off. I am the keeper of over 100 years of family photos and this is a big problem. Would love to see a teach on permanently adding metadata to my photos. What good is a backup if the who, what, where are gone when I have to recover my photos back from cloud? Metadata should survive me for historical family reference, have not found how to do this.

    Hi Steve. I am all-in with Google, but Stella is less so... and it's causing grief because I just had her move all her iPad photos into Google Photos. Problem occurs when trying to post from GP to Facebook - the result is a link to a shared GP album instead of the actual photos. Is there a way to post the actual photos from GP to FB? She **really** wants to re-create the experience of having the photos show immediately within the FB posting, and the ability to add comments/descriptions to the photos in FB. I am currently in the doghouse (apologies to Farley) .

If I delete the photo from my phone, does it automatically delete it from Google Photos and Amazon Photos? Guessing no, so only uploads are automatic and deletions are not automatic? Just want to be sure. Need to clear some space from my phone but am nervous to delete pics 😬

      Linda Knight they do not delete from Amazon when you delete them from your iPhone, but they do delete from Google Photos. So I prefer Amazon but the downside to Amazon is you’re more limited on video storage space whereas Google allows more video storage.

    Hi Steve, enjoyed your video, I was interested in Amazon Photo and have just become a prime member on Amazon. So I signed up with my phone. The immediately dumped all of my jpegs to my account. So I now have all of my album cover and all other jpegs on the phone on Amazon. This is what used to happen back in the 90s when I tried using photo management software. I expected the software to ask which directory to sync and upload from, it did not. now I have a major mess . is there a way to fix this without deleting the Amazon account and starting over. and how would I prevent this issue again?
