So here is the update. I like how sticky notes is kinda blends that quick note function pretty similar to KEEP but it seems to not have less functionality on its own. I went through the trouble of setting up and android phone with all the Microsoft app stuff to see how the programs perform in their ecosystem including the EDGE browser. I like the clean interfaces and utilitarian look. I grew up in the MS office enviornment so I find it comforting. They work. Call me satisfied. 10/ 10 would recommend.

Steve..l'd like to link a Google cal. event with Google Keep Notes while on the road using Android. I can't seem to open the side panel of Google Cal. while using Android on a large tablet or new Galaxy Fold4. Any thoughts?? Thanks, Robert in Hawaii
@Kokuian my experience is that the side panel is only in the computer version. But, if you open Google calendar via a browser window on your tablet you get the computer web version. I do this sometimes because only the browser version has all features. Hope that helps.
As a daily user of Keep, I only have one beef: If you accidentally delete part of your text, it's likely to be gone forever - there's no backup or saved history. If it's anything important, use the "copy to google docs" feature frequently to make a backup.
Could you possibly use keyboard shortcut CTRL + Z to undo last action?
@@ThatsBrilliantWithPC Yes, good point, ctrl-Z works if you do it immediately. But I was thinking of more complex edits, or if you are editing multiple notes. Once you leave a note in Keep, your changes are permanent. Full-featured software like evernote or one note maintain an edit history that lets you go back to a previous point in time if you have made a big mistake, or if you simply change your mind. It's just something to remember when you use Keep.

We have been using GKeep in our family for several years. The sync speed is perfect, so we have a shopping list pinned in Keep shared between me, my wife and my daughter. It's amazing that my wife is already at the store and I can add more items to that list for her in real time. Or, it's lovely when my wife is grocery shopping, to open that shopping list and watch with delight as each goodie moves from top to bottom and I can see what I can look forward to in just a moment. Yum!

I do the same- I copy ingredient lists from TH-cam or blogs, add the URL, then go to the pantry and check off what I already have. That prevents buying things I do not need, and I can use the URL to take me back to the recipe. If I like the recipe I can rate it. Later if I want a recipe I like that uses a particular ingredient, I can do a quick search and find one I am already familiar with and then check my pantry. Anything can be unchecked if needed again.

My husband had a stroke last year. Thanks for the tips as im seeing some possibilities for sending him reminders. These features are great for those with memory issues.

I just scrolled down to the bottom of my lists and saw I have been using Keep since 2014! This is definitely one of my most useful tools. Since I work across 4-5 different devices, it is a really good shared clipboard, accessible from anywhere. Another small useful feature you missed was the ability to nest items in lists (indents) and easily move items in the lists. It is a really great tool to quickly find an image you need. I keep a picture of all the keypads (TV/AC/Cable remotes, microwave, DECT phones,. etc) at my 90 year old mothers' home, which really comes in handy since most of my conversations with her involve some kind of remote tech support.

I have been keeping a digital journal in plain text for several years, but i still enjoy writing on nice paper with a fountain pen. Google Keep's grab image text feature lets me convert those handwritten entries to plain text and add them to my digital journal. The OCR capability is amazing.
What I love about Google Keep is I can reuse the same checklists over and over and if I need to add something to my grocery list its so easy to do. This app has saved me so much time. I live with ADD and this has helped me tremendously in my personal life and on the job.
Keep is one of the few _must install first_ apps on my Android devices. Just a couple of points...
(1) with the app (on Android at least) you don't _have_ to be online. So if you're not near WiFi and you like to keep your mobile data off when you don't absolutely need it, Keep still works just fine. It will synch when it has the opportunity. Even voice recognition works without a connection.
(2) You're not locked into Google when you want to use the web-based version. Works just as well with, say, Opera (my 1st choice) or Firefox.
(3) Once the app's on your device, Keep is on your _share_ menu. So adding a note with a link to a TH-cam video or some highlighted text or a website is only as far away as that share button. And of course when you do that a lot, group and organize them with labels and colors.

@@megancampbell3914 It _is_ really convenient. I frequently use it even as a substitute for web browser bookmarks. That way no matter what device or web browser I'm using, my web page addresses are where I can find them.

@@HarryOrenstein Thanks. My own observation starts to give me pause, though. What happens when a user's collection of notes becomes so huge that data consumption on a handheld device starts to become a concern? As long as we're restricting ourselves to purely textual notes, that's not much of concern. One gigabyte is more than sufficient for storing all the text in the Library of Congress. But when we start adding hi-res pics and voice notes, things might start to become problematic. As a programmer, I'm wondering, how does Keep handle things then? Will it merrily consume whatever data it demands? Is it smart enough to spool data to an SDRAM or will it insist on putting everything in main RAM? That's one of my pet peeves with most Google products... their insistance on residing in main memory with no user _choice_ ... Sorry Google, there is no reason for a word processor or spreadsheet to be a CPU hog. Oh wait, there IS a reason. It's just that wanting to track everything I do on my phone isn't a valid one. If there was a way to dump Android altogether and just put Linux on my phone, I'd do it in a heartbeat.
I recommend a browser extension called "Category Tabs for Google Keep" - it's an add-on that allows you to rename colors to categories.
For example, I'm used to having shopping lists in yellow, work-related notes in red, personal notes in blue, family and household notes in green, and so on. In that browser extension I can rename these categories so that Green is no longer Green, but Family, red is Work, and so on.
When I open Keep in the browser, these colors and the changed category names appear at the top as a sort of horizontal menu.
Those who like a sophisticated organization of notes will achieve this by combining labels, colors and these categories.

I downloaded the app, but can’t figure out how to activate it. It tells me that I can turn it on in Settings, but when I open settings I don’t see anything related to the app. Can you help me? Please ?
Might want to point out that this is only for Google Chrome, and more so only for the Computer/Desktop/Chromebook version, as mobile Chrome doesn't support extensions.

I was just wishing for that feature in Google calendar. I can always change the color but can't add category to that color.

Great video, thank you. I started using google keep because it integrates with google assistant, so I can say hey google add bread (or whatever) to the shopping list and it adds it. I made a bunch of lists to yell at google about. Then I was like on wow this app is terrific and then found your video with lots more tips!
Thanks Steve. Adding notes to to Google Keep via Google Nest had been disabled for a year or more. Recently , I discovered the feature is once again available. It's a game changer. Now, I can add notes and lists and list items without touching my phone just by talking to Google Assistant via Nest speaker, and view them on my pc. Easily and elegantly getting stuff from anywhere to my pc (not my phone) is an ongoing quest, and now Nest-to-Keep is a big part of the solution.
The collaborative option, first thought was it would be great for a family dinner where everyone might need to bring specific items. The host could make original list of what items for dinner are needed. Through collaboration each person could add their name as they tick off an item. This would be a good easy way to have everything covered and who's going to make/bring specific items. 👍
KEEP is an awesome tool that was designed with the KISS principle to the max. I might have missed you mentioning this but one other handy thing to use is the extension in the Google browser that lets you save the link to whatever page you are viewing in your browser to a a KEEP note. Using labels, you can then create a whole library of "your links" by category. Can't wait to see what new features Google adds in the months to come ... Great introductory video to a tool people won't regret learning/using.
This ability to save web articles is exactly what I need for one of my classes. I am using a gmail file for this now and it is positively painful.

Love Google Keep and your videos. My wife and I "Keep our grocery list on a note, so every time we go to the store we can pull it up on our phones and check items off. Ta-da! No more forgotten groceries. Thanks!
You talked about the very effective search tool in Keep, but what you didn't say is how powerful it is with hand-written notes. You write something on paper, take a photo, create a note with that picture, and when you do a research in Keep, it will look into the text of this picture (even if it is hand-written and you didn't extract the text from the pictures). Powerful and useful for a mixed hand-written/digital way of taking notes.
Love the checkboxes when shopping and the ability to uncheck when item is needed the following week or month so they come back to list
The features you're talking about are absolutely wonderful for the blind. They're now able to cope with computers just as the sighted.
I love the capability to handwriting a note. Magically the search bar finds everything I wrote!
I use Keep to make all my Calendar reminders because it them 'keeps' them all in one place if I need to make any modifications. If I use the reminder system built in to Calendar then to make a modification to a reminder you must find the date that the reminder is set to. It also makes for an easy way to cut & paste data between Android & MS Windows

Unfortunately the number of labels allowed is limited.
She is slowly taking over the house.
If you want to make a list but not necessarily with check boxes, you can use the dash (-). When you start a line of your list put a dash at the beginning. When you hit return it moves you to the next line and automatically puts a dash in front of it. Pretty much like making bullets. For some lists I prefer this method to the boxes. With the boxes everything gets the little box - even titles. Using the dash you only get the marker icon the lines you want to include. It will not check off items that you complete but if that is not a desire then you don't need it.
The '+' also works like the '-' does.
Sometimes a note will start with '-' items and I turn them into '+' items when I complete them.
It also recognizes numbered lists in this way 👍, e.g
1.
2.
3.
It also recognizes bracketed format , e.g. 1), 2), 3)
It will even renumber a list entry if you add an entry in the middle of the list (this doesn't work perfectly every time)

I love the voice dictation. It's very handy when I'm driving and need to note specific details. I can just delete the voice later and edit the text as needed.
Just an interesting side note is that Evernote was created by an engineer who worked on OCR software and wrote a program to easily read and convert text in images into plain text. (he pitched the image to text software to many investors who didn't see value in the software) The note taking function was a side effect of that software which ended up becoming Evernote.

I recall how powerful the OCR was when i used Evernote in the early days - i could even search my photos of wine labels by text!
BTW: Google Keep also had extremely powerful OCR features when it first came out. Then they dumbed it down to what it does today (recognising mostly common fonts) .. but some folks might find its current abilities in this area useful. I recommend trying it out to see if it meets personal requirements.
I'm a big fan of Keep, although i no longer use its OCR very much (aka "Grab image text").

Thanks to Google's brain-dead algorithm, content providers resort to putting in about 97% video filler, digital roughage, to about 3% actual nutritional value.
I just finished watching a Google Keep video on another channel that had about 8 minutes of filler and about 45 seconds of actual useful information.

Great video! Google Keep's simplicity is magical. The only issue is that it seems Google doesn't want to update it to give what users have asked for for a long time. Look at Apple Notes, which started as simple as Google Keep but has evolved into a very powerful notetaking tool but still maintained a balance between simplicity and power. It would be nice to see simple formatting (bold, highlight), mixed content types in one single note, tables, pdf attaching, password protection, and the removal of the limit of 100 tags in total in future updates. Personally, I also hope there is the ability to drag and drop list items between list notes, which saves a lot of time rewriting lists.
One feature you can mention in future videos is the many keyboard shortcuts that are quite useful in Google Keep.

Totally agree. I use Keep mainly for idea captures or short note and maintaining my shopping list. I love that I can use it both on my iPad and my android phone.

Evernote used to be great for quick capture. The ability to capture notes quickly on my phone anywhere in a variety of formats was what kept me from switching to anything else for 10 years. No more. It's still my vault (at least for now), but for quick capture, I've gone to Nimbus. Google Keep did make my short list. I really like the Google ecosystem and if everything was a bit more integrated, I'd probably go all in.

I use Keep on my phone like a sticky note, I make one line notes as a reminder of something, then pin them, I then made a Home Screen Widget which displays those pin notes right on the Home Screen, works great!
Love Google Keep. Been using it for about 5 yrs now. One of the things I use it for is to keep TH-cam vids (tutorials) available for me. There are a lot of Photoshop tutorials on TH-cam and when one catches my eye, I want to make sure I can view it as often as I want without having to search for it on TH-cam. Instead, I drag the TH-cam URL and put it into a Keep page I've created. Then whenever I want to view that tut again, I know where it's at.
I love Google Keep. I use it as I would sticky notes. It is perfect for quick notes, shopping lists and even a watch later list. I also use it to triage ideas and information before I formally find a home for them in Notion or in an Office document. The search is fantastic, and it is easy to delete notes once you are done with them.

Your demo of Google Keep just blew my mind. I agree it is no Evernote, but it is built for mobile phones. It is for taking quick notes and it does it exceptionally ally well.

I have been using Keep for several years too, I use it on a daily base for random notetaking on the go and my meal planning amongst other things. Now here comes the awesome part, while I do my meal planning, I can do my grocery list at the same time , and then go straight to the store and tick those items off. Loove that feeling 😁 Apparently I have the add-on that Miroslaw is talking about because now I see I can categorise my list ...that's pretty neat ❤ And I do need to use the feature with recording notes way more.

You forgot to mention one of the best features in my opinion and that is the ability to "drop and drag" from sorting different items on one of your lists and you can also rearrange and move the entire titled box. For instance today I am seeing my doctor and there are things that I have listed that I want to discuss with her. So I just grabbed that bubble and dragged it to the very top of my other bubbles!. I love it I have been looking for this type of feature in other memo apps and NONE of the ones that were recommended had that feature. Google also sent me an email just a few days ago telling me that soon we will be able to use different colors for our text and also use different fonts, underline etc. So I am looking forward to that feature especially for the captions of my lists. 🤠
I've been using Keep a little bit for years. But I'm perpetually dreading fully investing in it, as surely Google would then discontinue it, or somehow change it to make it unusable for me.
Great review, a game changer for me is that when you archive a file it still appears in you label folder, that allows you clean up your Home Screen but also file away notes etc, thanks again
Thank you for all of your content, I your passion for business reminds me of my late father. The comfort in your content is like being home for the first time in many years. Keep it up! I’ve used google keep since 2016 to keep track of notes on the go. This was a beautiful tutorial so thanks again.
I am constantly writing notes in Keep. Shopong lists, blog post notes, long lists for my newsletter, notes about my day trips for my photography, and more. My favorite way to use it however is to share links to content into a folder (or label) where it can reside until I'm ready to use it in my newsletter or my website. It's the perfect content collector for me.
I use Google Keep for my beginning and end of day checklists because when I complete everything I can simply click on Uncheck All Items and my list is reset for next use. It’s a great supplement to Evernote for me.

@@dottotech Thanks! The last item on my BOD checklist is "Reset EOD Checklist" and the last item on my EOD Checklist is "Reset BOD Checklist". I also have some simple lists of things that I access pretty often that I want at my fingertips, and it's easier and quicker to get to them in Google Keep than in Evernote.

Love your new puppy, Steve - gorgeous! Great video as always, but one killer feature of Keep that you touched on but didn't demonstrate is image-to-text. I find this invaluable as I moderate a Facebook group where posters can post in multiple languages. I can't understand many of these languages, but that's not a problem because I can use Google Translate. However, if they post an image with text, I can't use Google Translate directly, but if I save their post in Google Keep, I can grab the text from it and then put that text through Google Translate to find out whether it's spam or a genuine post. Absolutely brilliant!
I really, really wish it had formatting capabilities like bold and underline, though!

I use Keep for lots of notes but I was unaware that I could drop videos and web pages into it. It even generates a title 👍
So now I can save the interesting stuff in Keep and add a few notes of my own.
Previously I would save to my Gmail and then move to a folder.
Btw when I dictate a note on my Android phone I don't get the audio file. Not a problem as the speech to text is very good. Even for a Glasgow accent 😀
The sharing function is perfect for grocery lists -- we can each input what is needed, and whoever actually does the shopping has the full list. We also use it to make sure we've packed everything for a trip.
This is how my family uses it most. It is a little frustrating that I will be finished with the list and get home and get hit with "Where's the ...? I added it to the list." And I see they added ten things after I checked out. Wish there was a notification when someone edited a note or that I could lock out edits when I've crossed everything off the list.
Keep is one of my most utilized apps. I did not know about the reminder @ location ability - that's pretty cool. Also, weird that, just the other day, I was thinking about "wouldn't it be nice to have" that very function.

I have been using Keep for shopping lists and other simple lists for years, but I never looked further to see the other features. I will be taking advantage of the labels and the audio notes for sure. Thank you for this video!

Take pictures of serial number or model number for when you are out shopping.
Sharing lists between my wife and I when. One time when grocery shopping I watched on my phone as my wife was adding to the list from home they typing was live.

Hi Steve. Thank you for introducing me to many different apps that I had overlooked before - such as Google Docs and Keep. Your enthusiasm for your subjects is inspiring.
I used to use Evernote, but since the 2 device limit was introduced I've left it, although the Webclipper really is the best in its class and I've enjoyed using it to save interesting sections of a website for my own knowledge base. But now I can no longer use it in parallel, since Evernote Web is counted as a device (formerly iPhone + iPad and the web version for Mac and Windows). That's why I switched my personal and business notes to Apple Notes. I moved my shared shopping lists and the knowledge database to Google Keep, not that convenient, but it works. The integration with Gmail is also nice.
That's when I left it too. I've been with Microsoft OneNote and have no real complaints.
Yes, use this for Google to discontinue it in a few months, like they did with Google Read.

Been using it for years for shopping list, memo list, recipes, you name it. It rocks. Btw, in your video I saw some urls, in my Keep notes the urls show the page title plus a pic. Great app.

I tried most of the others but I kept 😀 keep because of simplicity, OS versatility, collaboration and offline access (yes, I can use it on airplane mode, offline, no data service areas) and still sync when data or wifi is available.
Great Video Steve. I tend to use Keep for quick ctrl-c ctrl-v stuff I use often. like a customizable clipboard. And I like MS OneNote for larger pieces of data, like online research. I just signed into MS Sticky Notes for the first time and will begin testing it out today. I am curious to hear your take on MS Notes/ MS Sticky Notes.
I've been using Google Keep since two phones ago.. around 8-10 years and it is great, I use it day to day in it really helps a lot... Thanks for the review it just reinforces that I made a right decision that I have chosen to use it.

One of my top uses for Keep is to collect web addresses. It is less regimental than the browser's bookmark manager. I can add tags and remarks to a web address note. I add a tag called Bookmark to those notes which categorizes them. Many of the web addresses point to documents shared from my Google Drive.
I don't use the picture capture feature because you cannot later export the picture for editing or storage in another application. There is the option to convert the picture note into a Google document, but that's not the format I want to keep pictures in and it would still be difficult to export the picture to a popular picture format.

I am begging to use it more and more in my personal & business life. I never use voice dictation but It can be very useful than trying to type. The simple family shopping list to Costco is been a time saver for us and I keep my elderly mom's medication list and share it with my sister so every time one of us takes her for Dr. appointment we have the same info. Please do more on Google Keep.

Great video! I struggle between Evernote and Keep. I like the fact that fully integrates with the Google ecosystem but, just like you, I feel Google could step it up a bit. I love the Evernote clipper. I do not think you mentioned that feature which Evernote has perfected. How about a video about what you would ask Google to add to Keep to get closer to be a full-featured note taking up? KEEP up the good work! ;-)
Do not. Try Joplin instead. It is open source, free, encrypted and available for mobile platforms. And yes, Google doesn't get to read it, scan it, spy on you though Google drive can be used as cloud synchronization tool. I replaced Evernote with Joplin and love it. I also have synology notes, but Joplin gives me privacy with NO COMPANY having acces to the notes.

Keep is a great (simple) note taking app that Google should really put more resources towards. I switched from Evernote to it years ago and unfortunately have reached the point where it stops functioning (crashes, hangs, etc.). The problem seems to be that it was not (from what it seems) initially designed for large note sets, so as your note database grows you will start to see a tremendous slow down in performance and search, to the point where the app will just lookup and crash (tested across numerous Android devices to confirm behavior).
I've submitted quite a lot of bug reports about the performance degradation on Android and they never seem to get fixed .. seems to be a project with minimal resources given to it.
The only way I've found to combat this is to write a program that auto archives notes after a week. Seems a lot of the issue is in the size of the non-archived notes API calls. Once it reaches a certain amount, performance drops off a cliff (I'm guessing it has a set amount that can fit into an API call before it becomes multiple API calls).
Great feedback, It re-enforces my thought that Evernote is better for long term storage and Keep for immediate use.
Does it make any difference if you archive everything and use the labels to search? Just a thought as I use many thousands of notes in keep but the desk top is clear except for specific activities im working on each day
Great video, Steve. Thanks for sharing and happy Easter. I love Google Keep for all the aspects you covered. I mostly use it for taking notes of all types, but I also create a shopping list with a location reminder. I enjoy the integration with Docs, Slides, Calendar, and Gmail. I often use the Save to Google Keep feature when researching on the web. I set a weekly reminder to wind our clock. I haven't used the collaboration feature much. The color and image backgrounds are nice but I rely on labels and pinning to find things in a hurry. Another activity I use a lot is saving the note as a Google Doc. I can open the doc to format it. I could go on and on with all the features I like. I'm a Chromebook and Google Pixel phone user so I'm committed to the Google tools.

I'm a loyal user of Google Keep and despite some minor frustrations around advanced features, the interface is super easy to use.
The search text within images tool is quite useful but could be made a bit more intuitive to use.
I'd also love to be able to share groups of labelled notes publicly without having to assign individual collaborators to each Note.
I like the ability to export labelled notes to a single Google Doc but this could also benefit from simplifying further.
The mobile app is good for writing down ideas on the move.
One thing that Google Keep does better than any other app IMHO is recognise my handwriting. I wonder if anyone else has noticed this?

I use apple Notes on iOS The only thing I prefer in keep is the grid view, everything else is better in Notes on iOS, deeply integrated.

@@jeishantamang9156 I use a small hard bound notebook and pen. I don't keep notes on my phone anymore. I am trying to confine my Google activities to my TH-cam channel. Will also be off of gmail soon. Cheers and good luck. Some people told me that EverNote is pretty good.

Thanks Steve, I have used Keep as my go to scratch pad and draft tool for a very long time. One of my favorite, recently improved, lesser known features I love, is the ability to annotate numerous photos within a note, then share the note to Trello. These 2 features have been a bit wonky for awhile, but they finally seem to have figured it out. As a caulking contractor, who looks at many jobs a day, with lots of photos, then needs to delegate the information to my guys in the field using a Trello/ Chronofy/ GCal system has been a game changer.
Unfortunately, the share ability is only available on Android and iOS.
I agree with you. I use it to keep all my recipes. Nowadays cooking for my family is so much easier.
