Don James did a remarkable job at UW. Mark Lee would end up being the team MVP in 79. Jim Lambright called a great game for UW's defense. USC starts 4 NFL players on the OL and some guy named Anthony Munoz is hurt! I coached with Stafford Mays in Seattle. USC should have lost at LSU earlier that year. Officials missed a false start against Anthony Munoz, then LSU was called for a questionable face mask when a tackler pulled down Paul McDonald. The Trojans exploited their good luck and scored the winning TD in the final minute.
Obviously that tie they suffered to Stanford at the Los Angeles Coliseum dropped them down to #4 considering that the USC Trojans started the 1979 #1 Overall.

The 2011 LSU team beat eight ranked teams. Three of them were in the top 3 when LSU played them and two of them occurred when LSU was ranked #1 so Bama (at #2) and Arkansas (at #3) were actually the highest ranked and second highest ranked teams, respectively, that LSU could've played at those times.

79 USC is one team that absolutely would've benefited from a playoff, at least I think so.
