+s731s I really love working with acrylics! But I am again to have a go with oils again. I tried once many years ago but really should give it another chance. Yessss lessons from Lena would be great! 😊

Chloe, did you think of trying water soluble oils as a jumping on point? I bonds with water, and the oils can be used with acrylic or oil mediums (or just water). If it's good enough for Camilla d'Errico, trust me, it's really, really good! :D

My final college art tutor pushed me towards oil painting after a whole afternoon of observing me with acrylics. I was VERY intimidated and if I'm honest, a bit disinterested. I was a dumber kid than I thought. I tried it like she asked and was hooked so fast. All my final pieces were in oils and that was the first time someone asked to buy a painting of mine. They offered £60, but the piece was of sentimental value to my mother so it hangs proudly in her home now. I want to really get good at oil painting but had to do a lot of finding my own way until now so your channel is a god-send. You are knowledgeable, charismatic and kind. 2 videos in and once again, I'm hooked. New sub! Nice to meet you! And thank you for your content! Xx

I'm a watercolor painter, but I've recently wanted to switch to oil painting (Bob Ross inspired me). I've tried oil painting years ago and it was so intimidating that I stopped before I even got the chance to really give it a try. I just want to thank you for taking your time to explain and simplify the basics of oil paints. You've truly boosted my spirits and given me such excitement to begin my oil painting journey! Thanks again 🌸

I painted with acrylics in the past, but living in the desert it dried soooo fast-too fast. Not enjoyable having to rush. I don't like to hurry when painting. I want b to enjoy the orocess. So I decided to try oils. Watched a couple vids and just went for it. Oh my gosh I instantly fell in love with oils. I immediately understood why painters love oils, that buttery feeling of the paint and enjoying the process. Not being forced to rush. It was my first portraiture and my first oil painting. It turned out awesome fur my 1st attempt and it didn't take months to dry or cure. Oils cure. Acrylics dry. Since I have tons of acrylics left I played around with mixing 2 mediums and it was better, similar to painting with oils, but not quite as wonderful. I'm so glad I've tried oils and will be using them more. They are awesome. If you don't leave your mediums open you are safe with using them. I mean you put such a tiny amount on your palette that I'm not sure why people worry. The actual oil paints are not toxic at all. It's wiring about breathing a bunch of medium, but n you don't of you use them correctly. Also, people forget there is toxicity in acrylics as well. I see people put their hands in acrylics, blend it on their paintings with their hands with no gloves and some of those colors are toxic. If you useoil mediums responsibly there is nothing to fear. Give oil painting a try. If you fear the tiny amount of oils mediums , use water mixable oils. I think you will like it.

Excellent example. Truly. I've watched many videos, and other than legends like "Draw Mix Paint" and "Florent Farges", this is a very clear and concise tutorial.
With that being said: I utilize multiple layers of 2 mediums, and one solvent. Using dropper bottles with pre-mixed solvent and medium proportions is invaluable.
Here are my layers broken apart by relative proportions. Other than mixing two mediums in the same painting (taboo generally), it works very well for me. Allow each layer to dry by touch. Allow 6 months after the final layer to fully dry:
    - Canvas
    - Gesso (3 layers and give time for each layer to fully dry)
    - Acrylic paints (optional)
    - Solvent (Gamsol works well)
    - Solvent + Liquin (Liquin is like Galkyd)
    - Liquin alone (Or mostly Liquin)
    - Tube Paint alone
    - Solvent + Stand Linseed Oil
    - Mostly Stand Linseed Oil (and a little Solvent)
    - Linseed Oil alone mixed with tube paint
When fully dry (about 6 months), apply a final layer of clear Varnish and let it fully dry. It's important to wait the 6 months, otherwise the under paint will continue to dry, shrinking, thus warping the painting under long dried Varnish layer.
Mind you, you can limit your painting to just 3 layers (or 1 if you're inclined), but if you like working in multiple layers, and you have the patience and portion control to remember everything, then the above is a good layout for the most extreme example of using fat over lean.

you mentioned several times that Galkyd "increases the drying time" when in fact it 'decreases' the drying time by accelerating it; which means it decreases the amount it takes the paint to dry.

    • @LenaDanya

Thank you, thank you. Finally someone who knows how to make painting with oil very clear. This video clarified what I have been searching for in the mixing of the paints with the mediums and what to expect with those mediums. So many of the videos on You Tube just shows a master artist demonstrating their skill without saying anything about the mediums or even the colors they are using. Keep up the good work. I look forward to watching your other videos. God Bless. Linda

Thank you for sharing from your experiences. I've just watched several of your videos & I'm actually encouraged to play with the oil paints my husband bought me for Christmas. I hate the say it, but I wasn't very excited about them. My usual hobby is watercolor painting. I love watercolors & find it relaxing the paint with them. Oils just seemed so intimidating. Since art for me is what I do for fun, I wasn't exited at all to begin. It felt more like I was obligated to try painting with them because they were a gift, but I want excited about it at all. It was kind of stressing me out. After watching some of your videos, I've not only picked up on some useful tips, but you have been inspired me to get started.

I have been diddling with oil painting off and on, since I was about 10 years old. I'm 75 now and have bought brushes and an inexpensive set of oil paints. I thought I would try it again. I'm on a very limited budget, so I'm going to try painting on some old pieces of paneling that came from some cupboard doors. I thought I would give them a coat of white to seal them and make it more like canvass. I really enjoyed your video. I learned a lot. I have never had any lessons and only used linseed oil to thin the paints. That doesn't speed up the drying at all as far as I can see, so I will get some of the products you have shown and give them a try.

I've painted in acrylics for years, but finally went oil just a few days ago, and your videos were very helpful in my "conversion." The amazing thing is that acrylics are not actually easier to clear up after. It's a lie! When acrylic paints dry way up high in your paintbrush, which often happens WHILE you are painting, good luck ever getting that out. In contrast, brushes used for oil painting clean up easily and quickly in an odorless solvent. And the results are WAY more beautiful on the canvas. I'm never going back! Thank you.

You're so good! I have painted with acrylic, watercolors and pastels and all those are kind of "ready" techniques compared to oils so I'm excited and a little bit scared to try them but I will, hopefully I will feel at least half as much passion as you do for oil paints 😊

I'd like to get into oil painting but I'm way too impatient. Like, watercolors dry too slow for me.

    • @jinslips7168
      @jinslips7168 8 ปีที่แล้ว +70

Its the opposite for me. I hate spending a lot of time just doing one thing. I'm glad oil paint dries so slowly because my breaks last a couple of hours and I dont want to come back to a dry painting if i'm not done with the layer. I'm also really lazy so i'm happy that I don't have to rush to clean my brushes like with acylic

+Taylor Smith those are such excellent points that you mentioned, you just made me realize all the stuff I get a little annoyed with when painting acrylics. I even have "artist block" since I can't bring myself to sit and paint, maybe these two reasons, is why. hopefully this video will push me, using oils seems to have the benefits I need :)

I once took a painting 1 class at a community college. I chose to use oil paints since 1) I already had a set of student grade oil paint and 2) I really hated the drying time of acrylic paint. The class was a good 2 1/2 to 3 hours long since it was a studio class. So using oil pain gave me a chance to step outside for a smoke break without having to worry about the paint drying on my brushes and ruining them. Also, our teacher might some days call us to a pause and have us gather real quick for a demo while we were working. So it was nice that I could just walk around or go wherever I needed to without having to clean my brush. Something else I did, was invest in a rectangular shallow plastic container with a lid (similar to tupperware) to use for my pallet. This allowed me to keep whatever paint I had on my pallet from drying out so quickly. Especially if it was a mixed color that I didn't want to have to mix again. Tape some wax paper down inside it for easy clean up and pallet cleaning, as all you have to do is pull the wax paper out, and throw it away. Then tape in a new sheet.

Thank you so much for your videos! It’s so helpful for beginners like me! I feel so intimated starting oil painting but your words of encouragement help a lot. I feel hard on myself with my first 2 paintings, but like you said Im going to take it easy and not expect too much from myself as a beginner. It can be so intimidating constantly seeing other artists work being so amazing and detailed it’s hard to not feel pressure 😂 but I guess we all start somewhere

thank you so much for this! i just started a painting class and i have next to no experience with oils, and that's what we're focusing on. we are using a 'water soluble' oil paint (yes, makes no sense) so we can thin with water, but some students have been experimenting (or have their own oils) with solvents and mediums, and i was confused with what any of that meant. i have years of experience with acrylics, watercolours, and other mediums but practically none with oil!
