I like how much attention you put into making sure that the things you use are cheap but work well. You don't waste money and material needlessly. Every part you presented in your video from the materials and tools you use contains CHEAPER, TIME SAVING, MATERIAL SAVING and of course SAFETY when talking about toxic materials. Of course, there are expensive and better quality materials, and oil is probably the most expensive medium for painting, which many cannot afford, and those are the talents who would like to do it. I enjoy listening to you, because you go step by step, simply and comprehensibly. I agree with you about everything in the video, but it was the first time I saw that toy for squeezing the paint out of the tube😆👍🏻 It's actually a really cool thing. Thank you for sharing and I wish you much success and happy painting. I share my love❤

The style of this video, the manner of presentation, the quality of the shooting (angle, light, camera stability, pace) no blah-blah, the complete absence of narcissism that most of the authors of such videos suffer from (especially men), all this is a model that should have been followed by other tutors. Your work is original and groovy. I have a bunch of cheap brushes... Including daughter's makeup brushes lol. They're great! I've played with oils before, but, trying to get serious about it now. Got a set of the Winton oils yesterday. We'll see how it goes. P.S. your last vid was not that bad.

Practical sensible tips. Thanks. Suggestion- use 4mm or 6mm Aluminium Composite panel, scuffed (sanded), gessoed with oil primer.

You're the 2nd artist I have watched who had an open flame 🔥 in their beginner video. I'm confused because of the flammability of the products. Isn't that dangerous? Wouldn't a candle warmer be a safer option? Or are they not that combustible?

Very informative and helpful😊 I plan to start oil paintings soon. I do tutorials using other mediums but for some reason oil paints scare me😂
thank you Zahra :) so happy that you found the tips helpful and not gonna lie i did shy away from oil painting at first because of the 'mediums' aspect. they can be scary at first but i promise you that they aren't. once you try out a few for yourself and how they work on whatever surface you are using, you'll get the hang of it. please give it a shot 💕

You mix a 50/50 ratio of gamsol to stand oil. Thank you for watching and congrats on starting to paint its a great decision in my opinion 😎

I also use walnut oil alkyd medium. It doesn't smell. Not sure if there are harmful vapours.
Do you mix the medium with the paint or do you apply it on the canvas before painting?
So do you put the medium on the canvas board before you paint?
When mixing your medium- Is gamsol somehow different that an odorless mineral spirits I would buy at Home Depot?
Sorry for late response, but I’ve heard that it is less harmful and dangerous to use than other brands (like ones you’d find at walmart or Home Depot)

Omg, oil painting is so expensive 😣 I got the primary colors, black, and a mixing white. Canvas and brushes. Fixative as well. It all cost over $70. So I'm buying supplies slowly since I am in no rush.
Now for the liquids, lol.
Once you get your basics though it definitely is worth it. ❤️ no other paints like it 🥲
thanks! I heard even though Gamsol is odorless it is still harmful (less than others but still is) . So some ideas were use it in drop bottles but still once it dries it will vaporize. just sharing. Best!

Hiiii I just wanted to ask if it’s okay to use oil paint on a sketchbook?? If so, Does it have to be thick enough like a watercolor cotton paper? And will i have to prime it a certain way? Thank you so much!
I have not tried oil sketching in sketchbook, but definitely use a thick enough paper so that it doesn’t bleed through :)

i'm confused, so which one do i need to use to wash off my brushes, thinner or gamsol? Also, after washing off the brushes, can i use the brush right after for another colour?
Gamsol is the paint thinner and acts as water would for acrylic - that's how i like to think of it. the stand oil thickens the mixture (50/50 gamsol stand oil mixture) and adds a stickiness when applying onto canvas. without the stand oil basically the paint thinner just thins and desaturates the paint. however i have heard of artists who just use paint thinner mixed with their paints while painting.
also, i have recently added refined linseed oil to my list when cleaning my brushes. (refined linseed oil is basically just a runnier version and less honey-like than stand oil) I have one cleaning tub with gamsol to immediately clean brush and then another with linseed oil to soften the brush and then dry on my paper towel to apply another color. you can just use gamsol too - that's what ill usually do.
I don't clean my brushes thoroughly anymore. I just rinse them in my odour free mineral spirits and wipe them off with a towel. Between uses I store them in a ziplock bag with saffron oil from the grocery store. You can just wipe them off and start painting. They stay fresh for a long time.
Hey I'm still not very clear on how to use certain mediums. So for the 50% stand oil and 50% Gamsol mixture, how much of a ratio with your paints and do you mix it on your palette? And what is the reason behind it - does it improve to consistency of the paint when working with it? Sorry for so many questions, but thank you for the otherwise very helpful video!
Sorry for late response. I put it in a small container next to my palette to mix. It makes the paint “mixable”. Start with a tablespoon/2 tablespoon equal ratio. You don’t need a lot. Use it like water (adding more to make it more runny) speeds up drying time and allows you to spread it onto canvas. Mix around with paint on palette

Yes I’ve done this too 🙏🏼 it works as well. Love getting the layers on quick with acrylic

yes, turpentine is paint thinner just like gamsol; but be careful with the fumes, 'cause it evaporates WAY quicker than gamsol... so use it on a very well ventilated place

can you reuse the water that you’d clean your brushes with ? like can it just sit there for a while and you reuse it in your next time
Yes you can! It is paint thinner that I clean my brushes with (gamsol) don’t use water it won’t mix with the oils 😁 I can reuse this multiple times depending on how dirty the mixture gets. After mixing I transfer into a jar so that the paint can separate and you can reuse that mixture too!
Aren't odorless mineral spirits more toxic than Liquin polyester resin? Also, mineral spirits are more volatile and penetrate mucous membranes faster

Yeah...OK..... Glad to see your at least a bit aware of the cost of all the stuff a person needs to get started...so many other videos ramble on with out a thought about the struggling beginner without much to work with which kills the art for so many new and young people especially in these thrilling times....recession.. Depression..High rents and mortgages...sly high prices..everywhere......you know.?...of course... you can make art out of the simplest things..including rocks..IE pet rocks.... but there's something about oil painting.. to me..its truly an art... You know ?. I've got a few colors...an French easel...a ton of brushes...I like your work..a bit of odorless thinner..but no mediums yet...looking into ligon..but it expensive as hell.....but back to your work...it shows true talents.. At least to me........a bit still left in the sixty's...wild times for me..and believe me...those days are long gone...but still...good....and ....you seem to be a very pretty girl also..bet you never heard that before...ha ha ha..glad it hasn't gone to your head yet...nonetheless.....ha ha ha...well thanks for sharing I'm just trying. Get this dog and pony show up and going...and it is as confusing as hell for me at times....so once again..thanks for the help...and I'll continue to watch what your doing....good luck and like Bob Ross.... wishing you many happy little trees...Ha Ha..
Excuseme madam. I wonder if the Liquin Original by Winsor only applies to the last layer ? and 1st, 2nd, 3rd layer maybe apply mixing between 50 50 Terpentine and Linseed Oil.? Thanks madam.
Totally up to you on this one! I have heard of finishing touches with liquid on the final layer though

Do you think you all should recommend mask too for every artist because something SCARRY happened to me using sims pastels and the varnish even if it’s a spray . I think you and e stone need mask painting and doing pastels and charcoal. 5:10

They can be a bit pricey but paint with whatever is affordable for you. Don’t let this stop you ❤️ for years i painted with less expensive acrylics and they did the trick :) or colored pencils on paper … just make the art your heart is desiring my friend 🙏🏼🦋

My soup worked much better than Windsor Newton brushes cleaner
60 years ago we used gasoline to clean our brushes. It was cheaper, wasn't toxic and dried fast. We even used it to thin paint. By morning the paint on the canvas was dry no matter how thick or how many layers applied.
We even washed our painting cloaks abs towels in gasoline before we'd rinse then wash them proper. Remixed all paint no matter how dried up or rubbed in. But then again we had brains. We didn't claim ethanol destroyed the ozone therefore we must pay more to have it removed from gas then pay extra to have it put back in.
We didn't pretend looking yourself in a safe space saved your life and we knew removing all bacteria would kill you by weakening your immune system. Cracks me up that people aren't living any longer today than ever before. Even the ancient Egyptians lived to be 100. The difference, we categorize our deaths to make it appear statistically that life expectancy is longer. Whereas they just did dead is dead. Didn't matter how they did, they are dead.
Your comment caught my eye immediately. I too am an oldie. I've tried every medium going and you know what.....nothing beats turpentine mixed with the paint. It stinks yes, but with Everything else I seem to wait days for the thing to dry and it's what I miss most about acrylics.
