  • Our old video quality was terrible so I decided to redo what I felt like was an informational video. Only this time with quality video, audio and editing. Thanks for watching !!!

    Great Video! I did that to my 76 Scout II 25 plus years ago it had a dry bearing set. The only thing I found that the filler hole in the stock Dana cover is a little to low to put in a good amount of gear oil in the diff. I am not saying to put in a bunch of quarts in the diff, but an amount to have the oils level so it is in the tubes all the way to the bearing. I found that Outlaw Differential Cover has a filler on the top of the cover and it is earlier to fill and gauge how much you need. Just wanted to let you know that I have nothing to do with ODC but I received it free in a drawing at TDS years ago.

    HAHA!! Literally sitting in a Kwik Lube this morning getting an inspection done for my sons truck watching this, and couldn't help but start laughing in the waiting room on the rear end comment!! hahahaha - that one got me at the right moment!! So couple of questions:
    1) you removed the inner seal by the carrier to allow the diff fluid to travel into the tube and keep the outer bearing greased right?
    2) the purpose of doing to is to not have to remove the axle every year or so to re-grease the outer bearing?
    Thanks for video and the laugh Levi! Hope all is well!

      Yes sir. Pull the inner seal, clean out the tube, and give the wheel and tire a tug and a shake on your next pre trip inspection instead of pulling the axle and greasing.

    Any idea when they changed to a wet set up? Thinking about doing my 74 this way but don’t really know if mine is wet or dry.

      Around 74 I believe.

    So we just replaced our 78 Scouts rear diff with a limited slip, and also replaced the leaking axle seal on the passenger side shaft. We noticed after putting everything together that the brake drum doesn’t cover the shoes quite as far as the driver side (maybe a 1/4”). Not sure if that’s just how they’re designed but I doubt it. Rather than tear it all apart, I’m curious if anyone knows whether the direction of the axle shaft matters, or is it just completely flat sheet metal?

    • @OldIronOffroad
      @OldIronOffroad  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Would say that you have the wrong drum on that side. Measure the depth of the drums side to side and see if they are different. I would bet you have a 71 to 73 drum on one side which is narrower.

    • @trevorterry795
      @trevorterry795 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@OldIronOffroad Good Point, I will check to see if the PO put on a different drum for some reason. Oh, and I meant to ask if the axle shaft RETAINER mattered, not the axle shaft lol. I'm at least handy enough to know which direction the axle shaft is supposed to go 😅

    • @OldIronOffroad
      @OldIronOffroad  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@trevorterry795 No the retainer does't matter. As long as the bearing is fully seated and there isn't excessive endplay in the bearing and the retainer isn't bent.

    Great information on these old axles.
    Any idea what years they converted to oil bath tapered bearings?

      I've got a 73, 74 and 79. Guess I'll start with the oldest and make sure they're all squared away.

      @@christopherketchum323 keep in mind that just because they are already oil lubricated doesn't mean they don't need replacing. Best bet is if you don't know when they were done. Replace them.

      @@OldIronOffroad absolutely agree. I have no knowledge on condition of any. However, I'd be inclined to tackle the highest probability of failure first. If that makes sense.

    Any reason not to use the press to remove the old bearing so you don't risk nicking the shaft?

      None at all. If you have the proper fixture to do so.

      Not sure. Browsed quickly through a parts catalog and there aren't any listings for a set 20 on that axle. Best bet would be to pull it and snag some part numbers off the old stuff.
