Greetings from Germany. Congratulations Kristen on your gold medal. I grew up in Colorado Springs, cycling and climbing around the Garden of the Gods and North Cheyenne Canyon.
@@FreedomOfSport Kopecki was doing less work. I'm not denigrating Kopecki, that was a smart move, and that's racing! Faulkners move was a go-for-broke move, that would have been difficult to recover from, because she wasn't just burning a match, she was lighting the whole book of matches!
Timing of this interview published is just so awesome! Kristen Faulkner that last kilometers you were just simply amazing, just flying and everyone else had 0 chance.
Faulkner started racing for CRCA/Dave Jordan in NYC. Jordan was a local cycling legend who left us far too early and as among those who knew him, hopefully he's looking down and smiling.
The commentators during the race today kept saying "she picked up cycling less than a decade ago..". I was curious about her at that time and here she is. What a dynamic career she has! What an awesome women who is resilient enough to change the trajectory of her life, and achieves nobody can dare to.
This was such an interested turn of events... she was been dragging along this far-more renown cyclist (Kopecky) to join two more renowned pro's. Now it's Her David vs. those three Goliaths. And by taking off immediately, those leading 2 hadn't studied her - probably hadn't heard of her. And Kopecky couldn't/wouldn't/DIDN'T educate them - "Hey - she lead me up to you - she gained at least 60 seconds on you two and I was doing minimal help! We gotta CHASE her!!" Of course, Kopecky was probably thinking, "These two will chase her down - I don't have to say a thing." Then it was too late. This situation could have only happened from 3 Euro cyclists with some knowledge of each other, and almost zero of Faulkner. "We know each other and how dangerous we are... we'll chase her in a few seconds..." Then a few more and a few more. And kablooey - there went their chance for gold. That scene of Faulkner, head down with a 30m gap, and the camera looks back and we see those three sit up and look at each other... ha ha.
Vos is the most successful female cyclist of all time although she’s close to the end of her career. Kopecky is currently the best one day racer in the world. They were watching each other without realizing how strong Faulkner was/is. They’re very closely matched in the sprint and it showed at the end. Faulkner’s ride was brilliant. She took advantage of the other two favorites’ familiarity with one another. That’s the beauty of cycling - it’s not just about physical capability.
1:48 She has more to offer than just resilience. In Paris, she showed the same intelligence as a racer as Anna Kiesenhofer three years ago, another surprising Olympic champion who won gold through resilience AND intelligence. They have a lot in common. These are great Olympic stories, worth to be told.
She won TWO Gold Medals in Paris! I addition to winning the road race, she ALSO won the Team Pursuit on the track with teamates Chloe Dygert (who won Bronze in the Time Trial), Jennifer Valente (Tokyo Gold, Bronze), and Lily Williams (Tokyo Bronze).
I used to like Lotte Kopecky. I didn't appreciate her not taking the lead. After Kristen did the job to join Vos, she was very clever and strong being able to attack again. La tête et les jambes.👏
Wish I could talk to her, I have same degrees and background and worked in NYC, HATING what I did, dreaming of cycling and swimming every day, but I never joined the club in NYC, that was her start, its very competitive, I dropped my work as well, but she somehow got noticed and went west, good for her. wow, what a story. For cyclists this is bigger than Lance Armstrong.
Watching the event, I was expecting there to be a big sprint to the finish line with 4-5 cyclists having a chance to win it but she took off and won it easily, making 3 trailing athletes sprint for 2nd, 3rd and 4th. Congrats to Kristen and to the coaches and supporters!
It’s unlikely because Kopecky is the best current one day racer in the world while Vos is the greatest female cyclist of all time. Faulkner is very intelligent and played them like a piano. They were looking at each other, literally.
Now she is an Olympic Champion. Kristen would be a perfect candidate for a second edition of "Range: How Generalists triumph in a Specialists' World" by David Epstein.
Kristen is the poster child of these Olympics - which is funny of course, she's not a child...,but she is the newcomer..,the unknown talent..,and her finish in the Gold medal performance in the Women's road race event, when compared to Remco's histrionic posing, was positively refreshing - Yes, I had a job to do and I did it....,so refreshing
It'll be great if she medals in the event she came for, but at this point who cares? She's already made history. Time to focus more on the road Kristen!
I picked this up last year as a way to lose weight. I competed in a triathlon and with only 1 year of practice, i was fastest on the bike in the mixed teams and out of the solos, i would be right in the average. And thats with no training. 3 weeks notice. And inferior equipment. Cycling rules, GO GET ANOTHER GOLD IN THE VELODROME!
Before watching this video I said to myself something tells me this woman has access to top 1% levels of money. Then I heard working in venture capital and it all made sense... I'm a strong believer that there are many Olympic level athletes out there that can't afford to hone their skills in order to compete. Inner cities of America and foreign countries that would break records but can't afford to...
Dumb take. You don't realize the world class physiology that is require to race at this level, it's not something you can purchase. The World Tour is full of athletes from all types of economic backgrounds. This women is pure talent.
@ATXAG she's obviously very talented. The OP is a clown. But let's not pretend opportunity in cycling isn't related to access. There's a reason why poor nations produce a lot of very good football players but no massive number of outstanding ice hockey players, figure skaters etc. Kenya and Ethiopia produce the best distance runners. That same physiology should also result in a decent number of them(they have a LOT of great runners that never make it internationally because they have so much depth) would make great cyclists. But the opportunity simply isn't there.

She has always been naturally athletic. She has made all Homerites proud!
Amazing finish, amazing story...best story so far at the Olympics for me, Stephen Norodoski? Clark Kent would be second best for me.

Gold on track and on road. She is absolutely awesome!
