What I enjoyed most of Faulkner's win is that she did exactly what we were taught way back: you catch somebody, leave them behind because you have better legs, in most cases. To blow away much more experience riders like Vos and Kopecky, having them looking at each other..., priceless.
Given their experience, I'm still not quite sure why they didn't try harder to chase and reel her back in... there was still some distance. (Not that I wanted her to lose, but I was surprised they 'gave up' so quickly...
Those 3 just looked at each other, none of them wanted to do the work and close the gap, and so, none of them had any chance at winning. I get it, you don't want to pull some others with you, just to have them sprint around you, but at the same time you also have zero chance of winning. Faulkner was really strong late in the race and it paid off.
@@andrewzook8648 I know. I was surprised they were perfectly happy to let the gold medal get away. Not like it was a big important race though.
Kristin Faulkner was the deserved winner. She was the driving force in the pursuit of the duo Vos-Vas. And as the slowest of the four, her only chance of a medal was to attack. Even the smallest child could see that. Vas did react and came within 5 meters, but Vos and Kopecky were eying each other and trying to let the other close the gap. And then the bird would have flown. Kopecky does have a point that Vos, as the fastest, had the most to lose, and it was up to her to react, but not reacting could cost her silver (shades of Wollongong?). Because if they catch Faulkner, it's game over for her, and the sprint for the medals will be between her and Vos and Vas.
Kopecky made a serious effort 40 km earlier in the pursuit after the roadblock at that fall on the 1st climb of Montmartre, and in retrospect that costs her (too) much strength. But making that effort is the right choice because she is the only rider who could join the leading group from the background. For the rest (Vollering, Wiebbes, Labous,...) it was game over.
What does Vos cost the gold: not reacting to Faulker (see above) but especially: when she was in front with Vas, she clearly did the least leading turns. Vos always plays the sneaky one. If Marianne Vos does more leading work at the moment that the two (Vos, Vas) are fighting against two (Faulkner, Kopecky), then Faulkner and Kopecky probably won't return. And Vos sprints for gold. She outfoxed herself.

I'm Dutch so i was rooting for the ladies in orange but as soon as Kristen went on her attack i was rooting for her, what a hero! It's great to see how women's cycling has gotten so professional!
Maar wat een blunder om Wiebes als optie voor goud te kiezen. Deze wedstrijd was veel te moeilijk voor een pure sprinter. De vier beste rensters zijn allemaal krachtige vrouwen, die klein bergen aankunnen, Wiebes kan dat niet.

That fact that Faulkner wasn’t even supposed to be here and was only in this race because nubin pulled out focus on triathlon is crazy
Taylor Knibb gave up her road race spot, because her coach told her she had no business in a road race, which is certainly true. She has zero road race experience. Thank goodness for a wise coach. And shame on USA Cycling that they would allow Knibb to even "win" that road spot by winning the national TT. It makes no sense. Knibb's coach saved USA Cycling as well. In fact, you can argue that a triathlete should never be given a road TT spot. Are triathletes prepared for a TT course in the rain with lots of tight, narrow turns? Seems not. Knibb crashed FOUR times in the Olympic road TT. She then came in 19th in the triathlon, when some thought she was a contender for a medal, probably because she was beat up by crashing four times. One could argue that USA Cycling really undermined Knibb by even giving her that TT spot.

Strange management at USA Cycling. I find it odd that they couldn’t find four riders for a full road race squad. And now they pissed off US Triatheletes because they set up Knibb to fail in the time trail.
@@petesjk USA doesn't get to pick how many riders they send. Those spots are earned based on each countries results in UCI races. US only earned two slots per gender.

Congratulations, Kristen Faulkner! 🇺🇸🎇🎉🎆 I got to watch Connie Carpenter win in 1984 (with Rebecca Twigg in second), and it made me proud. Watching Faulkner win left me feeling equally proud.

Fantastic race, fantastic result. Faulkner earned every inch of this. Basically rode everyone off her wheel up the climb and was the only one with legs when they caught the lead two. Perfect attack, perfect win. If I were her dad I'd be jumping out of my skull. So sad that Vas goes home with nothing after a stellar ride and a few centimeters. That is the cruelty of the Olympics.

We were waiting on the chesterfield to see your reaction to this. As a Canadian I was rooting for Allison Jackson but as things unfolded I was blown away by the perfectly timed attack by Faulkner. What a finish!

It's the classic dilemma. You close the gap I am not going to pull you. Then none of the favorites win because they don't want to pull the rival to victory. Then the gap is created and victory lost.
To me it looked like they didn't have the legs to close the gap. Kopecky looked dead earlier already.
That was a great moment. Must had been something like, I’m getting that silver before you still. Cause gold was gone. 🥈😜🦋👊

Such a good race!! Faulkner was not messing around- when Kopecky couldn't/wouldn't pull and let the gap go back out, Kristen got back on the front right away. She knew she had it. What a victory!

What an awesome race. I had the TV on for the entire time, and was sitting on the edge of the sofa tapping my fists on my thighs for the last 10km. I think that I yelled at the TV a couple of times, too.
Moment in Paris like LeMond in 1989. Not impossible but very unexpected. Faulkner was so strong, it was fun to watch the last 50km.

Still scratching my head at Faulkners EPIC win. Dominating performance against best riders in the world and only been riding competition later than 2017. She's one to watch and this statement was huge, very proud of the Alaskan.

With my bare minimum research on Faulkner's cycling year thus far, I discovered she placed 12th in the Women's TdF, 17 minutes back. That was 10 places above Marinne Vos who was 27 minutes back. Vos won 2 stages, Faulkner won Stage 4 which was a 140km descent. Faulkner won the USA National Road Road this year, and was 2nd in the TT. She won a stage in the Vuelta, too. She appears not to have ridden in a lot of Euro races, but did OK or Better when she did.
An awesome, exciting, competitive race....but if Steve Shlanger had told Kirsten Faulkner 's autobiography one more time there would have been a brick going thru my TV all the way from the Chesterfield....
Great analysis, as always! As a hungarian I am very p.ssed off at Vos and Kopecky, especially at Vos. Blanka pulled mostly, Vos was just in the passenger seat when the 2 lead the race....and when the 4 was together, they (Vos, Kopecky) were to afraid to pull back to Faulkner and lose to each other, so they stopped, unfortunate for Blanka. 😥 Congrats to Faulkner!
Btw. 4th place in woman and men road race (Vas, Valter), 10th place in woman MTB (Vas), 22nd in men TT (Valter)...not bad, considering, they were the only riders representing Hungary! Chapeau! 👏👏👏

Looks like Blanca Vas' only chance to medal would have been to go with Faulkner, but as Chris Horner noted, she looked back at Vos and Kopecky for help and the chance to go with Faulkner was gone -- maybe she didn't have the energy anyway after working so hard to keep herself and Vos at the front. I suppose it's easy to say that was her best chance now, after the race -- I don't know how the riders make these decisions on the go after riding hard for a long time and without radios.
One of the saddest things about it was the AP press release talking about out her winning from the breakaway. Like, at least get someone who watches cycling to write the pieces
Thanks so much for explaining what happened at the end of the race Chris. Peacock just went from her jump to her winning. What a brilliant move. So smart to realize with enough of a gap they'd let her go and take their chances on a silver versus trying to chase her down and losing any chance at a medal.
She showed breakaway *POWER*

Faulkner looked far stronger than Kopecky in the chase of the two leaders. When Kopecky was on the front the gap widened, Faulkner closed the gap, powered the others off her wheel- Victory, Excellent late choice for team USA

What timing and power! I was so worried that Faulkner was using too much energy attacking and closing gaps. I guess she knew what she had under the hood though 😊. Awesome display of how to win a race.
Great insights Chris, as usual. You're dead on about when to help a group bridge to a teammate (or sister), and when not to (ex. 15k to go and a good gap). This year was so exciting, there might have been a little luck on Faulkners side, but my god, what a boss display of power, she 100% earned this. When you ride cycling gods like Kopecky and Vos off your wheel, what does that make you? That makes her a rider that I will be keeping my eye on in future races.

Excellent overview thanks Chris. The Olympic road race is always a crapshoot as you noted in an earlier upload. No race radios and teams of max size 4 of riders who are not used to working together and so don’t have any of the second nature familiarity and trust as you have in a pro-team

Men Brit and USA mechanics have watch your 2012 story and done their homework. They put a little flag on the bike rack to be different from other white car with bike on top. 🦋👊
I think everyone watching knew that when the two favorites just looked at each other instead of chasing, something wasn't right. When the gap really opened up in the next 10 seconds and they were still looking at each other, it was basically gold for Faulkner. Unbelievable. I'm sure that is the word on the people watching Faulkner, including Vos and Lopecky.

Although I understand the perceptions that the lack of response and working together by the three after Faulkner attacked was some fear that they would help the others win and/or beat them out of a medal, consider that Faulkner appears to be a bigger, stronger rider, she has a track rider’s power and sprinting speed, her explosive attack indicated she was fresh and lit, and perhaps the three other VERY experienced riders were relatively tired and quickly settled for hanging with each other to battle it out out for silver and bronze.
Faulkner, btw, will race on the Olympic track soon. 😮😂❤
If you've been following the female peleton for a while, you know Vos always gets some knucklehead to roll the red carpet out for her. Kopecky has been that leadout way to many times, and it probably got in her head.
I watched this race and in my opinion it was more exciting than the men’s race. I loved both but the ladies were just fantastic.
At 3km to go the Dutch and and Belgian riders would rather not work together to catch the eventual winner only a few seconds ahead. Madness not to risk it all with the gold medal chance within grasp.
Poor Blanka Vas. She was perfect to let Kristen go. But then nothing from Vos and Kopecky.😱🦋

That young lady rode a strong, strong race. She legitimately beat the best ladies in the world. Too bad she didn't post up for a lifetime pic of winning the gold in front of the Eiffel Tower, I think that will be a regret in the future but she'll have that gold medal to make her feel better. Well done!!

As a Swiss I had to laugh so hard on your pronounciation of Noemi Rüegg. I know it‘s very difficult as a non Swiss to pronounce that but it was very funny.
I think Swiss rider in that break rode superb what a performance on her part. She will be one to watch in upcoming seasons.

That was an epic race. Some interesting chat going on at Lantern Rouge around team sizes being key to why these races have been so good. It'd be interesting to hear your thoughts on why these races were so good and if you have any similar thoughts on why.
