Please never think your English is bad. There are so many different dialects with English, plus it's a crazy language. I find that those of you who speak more than one language are far more precise with the English language than native speakers. As an American, there are some dialects that I can not even understand! Is it funny that I’ve been watching these shorts and videos for about three months and I just realized that she has given her boyfriend the name “German boyfriend“ in order to protect his identity. For just a second I thought “why is she calling him ‘ German boyfriend’ right in front of him“ as if it was rude. For some reason it felt culturally acceptable for her to say that when he wasn’t in front of her and felt odd with him in front of her but then I realized it’s the same thing as the teddy bear over his face, a conscientious and loving way for her to keep him out of the limelight he does not wanna be in.
Guys I wanna say I really enjoy your positive and realistic messages

I am a native English speaker from USA. Our English is different than the British English. I would not know what they are talking about. I would also need to learn some of their words and phrases that are different than ours. Also, thank you German Boyfriend for making me realize how much German I was still living as I grew up. My Great Grandparents were from Germany. Granted, we were slowly changing, but, I see many similarities as to what you talk about and my younger life. Also, for your spice level, it will change, I married a Hispanic, and started eating spicier food. Now, I add spice to my food a lot. Take care!

Traveling with my wife can be a bit of a challenge given her health issues. Her food allergies mean we need to find an aparthotel. Her chronic fatigue issues mean that we need to find a mix of things to do. For example, museums and sights that are physically accessible to her (sometimes getting a wheelchair helps), and more extensive things that I can do alone when she needs a break. Occasionally she needs a crash day, while my own approach to vacations can be physically punishing (lots of walking, hiking), and I want to try *all* the foods.
We went to Dresden this summer, which mostly worked out, although the ongoing construction in the palace meant that she wasn't able to see one of the exhibits. The stairs were just too much :( .
On the days she needed to crash, I hiked up to Königsberg and also Meißen.

Yeah the weird thing is I'm in the Netherlands and germans come to my town to visit the beach in summer but our beaches are not even that great. Though I did always go find sharkteeth in the sand so German boyfriend would have liked that. The seabed could be muddy, or slimey feeling at times and you have to pay attention to the tides. But dutch people d go walk along the coast in winter too, we call it "blowing out" and the beach places serve hot chocolate so you can warm back up after the winds blew all the thoughts out of your head.

People have old fashioned patriarchal attitudes in the UK too. When I was buying my first apartment, I took my boyfriend at the time to a viewing - the (white male) owner talked the whole time to him and completely ignored me (Chinese female). When I asked questions, he only addressed the answer to my boyfriend. He only realised the mistake at the end when my boyfriend pointed out that he would not be part of the transaction at all 😂

I'm from Canada and a native English speaker. I honestly only understand UK English about 75% of the time. Some of the accents are SO difficult to understand, and there are so many Britishisms! I asked someone how long a delivery would take to arrive and she answered, "How long is a piece of string?" which apparently is a very common phrase indicating she had no idea how long, but I'd never heard of the saying before so I thought she was intentionally trying to be annoying (to be fair, that was also a very unhelpful answer).
My partner and I watch the Great British Bake Off religiously, and depending on who the show contestants are in the season, I have to turn on subtitles or ask my British partner what people are saying every few minutes. Accents are a struggle!

But glitches do happen! So, check your closed captioning, if that didn’t work, I don’t know what to do. Closed captioning has its own little button in the upper right hand corner, but that just turns it on and off. To get to the settings for closed captioning, click on the little gear wheel in the upper right hand corner, click on closed captioning, and from there, it sounds like you would need to click on English. Good luck!

I teach English as an additional language to adult immigrants to Canada, so it was really interesting listening to you two talk about speaking English with native speakers of English. First off, I want to say that you both speak English really well and it doesn't matter that it isn't perfectly correct. You communicate easily and don't need to think about it too much. That's what's important. I'd love to be able to speak another language that fluently! As for feeling uncomfortable speaking English to native speakers but not to other learners, that happens to everyone when they first start speaking a language they're learning to native speakers of the language. My students feel uncomfortable when they start classes unless they've been using English in Canada for a while. I also feel that way when trying to speak French or Japanese to native speakers. Eventually, most people get used to it and the discomfort goes away. The other thing to remember is that if people aren't familiar with or expecting an accent, they need to listen more carefully to understand what they're hearing. This means that people often don't understand you at first just because they weren't paying enough attention. This happened to me sometimes when I was in England. People weren't expecting a Canadian accent, so it took them a few seconds to adjust and sometimes I had to repeat myself because of that and also because of vocabulary differences. It was actually more difficult for me, I think, because I couldn't understand every accent and occasionally still couldn't get it when they repeated themselves. It was a little embarrassing but perfectly normal. But I don't have any problems understanding either of you and would be thrilled if my students spoke English as fluently as you two.

I always make spreadsheets for the places I want to go and will make heat maps, for example I will find 1 thing I want to do that day and we will buy tickets, than I will look on the map for any place that is within 15 minutes walking distance, that way I don't accidentally book 2 events that are so far apart we will be stressed rushing from one to the other.

if it makes you feel better about understanding accents: I once went to a wedding in Inverness, Scotland (I'm American.) My friends took me to the kilt shop when the groom was picking his up, and I had a conversation with the shopkeeper, who was from the Isle of Skye. This man and I literally had a conversation....where neither understood the other. Our accents were unintelligble to one another hahaha. Uyen, I get your bad impression from Prague/Czech Republic considering you stayed in the most touristic places. 😂 If you ever come again, just watch a few videos of the Honest Guide channel for inspiration. 😉 Czech cuisine isn't the lightest one but it certainly has its gems. ❤

In Japanese we say ‘neh’ at the end of any sentence in spoken informal Japanese. Equals to’ isn’t it’ like ‘no?’ But our ‘meh’ with different intonations means different situations 😂

I do think you guys would like Canada! In particular I think you would do well in Ontario, particularly Toronto. Toronto is actually the most multi-ethnic/multi-cultural city in the world! If you do your research you can find a German area and a Vietnamese area too - Asian however would probably be easiest. We also have a nice Asian hub in Waterloo (I studied at the University of Waterloo). And 15 minutes away is the St. Jacob’s Farmers market (and the town of St. Jacobs), which has strong Germanic roots (especially because of the Mennonite community there). There are also many Mennonite Farms nearby. Just start driving and look for the signs at the side of the road for a farm (often Mennonite, so they often speak Pennsylvania Dutch which I’ve heard is very similar to German). Kitchener is also quite German in its roots, though it’s also more multicultural now too. Fun fact! Kitchener used to be called “Berlin.” It got changed during WWI. It was named after some British general instead. If you do come to Canada let me know, I know the best places to go and could easily help you plan (including in a budget). All the best! :)

I love researching and planning what to see when I travel. Otherwise, I feel like I am wasting time in a new city or country. I may make a short list and decide that day, but always start out early in the morning.
Glad you found a good travel style together. Have you been to the Senckenburg Museum in Frankfurt?

You guys would fit in with the Canadian way of speaking & living. Every 2nd one is a mixed couple here & ppl just don't care. Your English is REALLY IS VERY GOOD & you'd do fantastic here. You'd be totally understood everywhere. However GBF, you WILL be asked, 'how are you doing today', by everyone. I just say 'oh, not too bad'....
You 95% sure, won't encounter any racism at any place, UNLESS it is an immigrant to Canada. They always ask if you want separate bills in restaurants. PLEASE to my Canada. We'll go through parts of Alberta and also Manitoba. You could go to B.C. and see stuff on your own....it several places you could stay with ppl I know and not have to pay 😁😁😁

Accommodation is something I won't compromise on when I travel. It has to be booked for the entirety of the trip, no exceptions. I don't need the added stress of "what if" and "maybe I'll be able to book...". I also like doing research on places to visit and things to do, so I'll make an itinerary but whether I follow it to the letter or not depends on the day and how I feel. That I'm more flexible with. Also, I'm surprised you guys said that plane tickets from the UK to mainland Europe were expensive. If you go with one of the numerous budget airlines, you can really good, cheap deals. I've paid as low as 25 euros for a return flight from the UK to Prague and back.

Hi! I'm from the United States. I grew up in Tennessee, but I live in Arkansas now. In other words, I'm from "the south".
I RARELY have any trouble understanding the two of you and I've watched everything on your channel. One caution I have for you if you come to America- be aware that certain parts of the country have extremely thick accents. A few of the states/regions I'm referring to are
    -Boston (Massachusetts)
    -Louisiana
    -"the deep south"
    -Minnesota and Wisconsin
Pretty much everywhere else is easy to understand. Hope that helps!!
    -Emili ❤

I'd say Minnesota and Wisconsin have pretty standard American accents in the major cities (Minneapolis/St Paul, Madison, etc), and stronger accents the more rural it gets. That said, Minnesotans will never, ever be able to pronounce "bag" correctly. They will always say "beg".

I was traveling to a small town in the mountains of Veracruz, Mexico. A friend let me use his discount to fly into Mexico City, but it was standby. He could see how full the flights were, and he said the return flights were wide open. Well, not after two weeks! Apparently the kids in Mexico were out on holiday and in two weeks 99% of the tickets going to Texas were booked! Hours in the airport and a long flight back through another state. 😅

Your fate while visiting the US would depend on where you go. If you go to NYC, no one will think you’re a tourist just based on your English. I knew people who’d lived in NYC for decades and only spoke their native languages. Likewise, Americans in more diverse areas are so used to hearing English varieties that they don’t really care. The advantage would be that you’ve been heavily exposed to the more common American accents through tv/movies. But some of the regional ones are just wow. I had a native English speaker from the Midwest ask me for directions in NYC and as a native New Yorker, I couldn’t understand her because her accent was so thick.
