Why Can't Japan Accept Mixed-Race?

  • What's it like to feel like a foreigner in a country you were born and raised in? Aju was born in Tokyo to a father from the Bahama's and a mother from Japan. She has spent almost all of her life in Japan and speaks native Japanese, but struggles to talk to other Japanese people. Why won't Japan accept mixed-race people?

    No way!!! Is that Aju? One of the kindest Japanese woman I have met during my travels in Japan. I met her last year at Weerasakrack Muay Thai gym in Tokyo, September 2023 during our Muay Thai training session and she acted as a translator for me to a tradesperson working at the gym which then led onto having a really great unforgettable conversation with her before I had to dash to DisneySea. I was thinking about her before TH-cam algorithm recommended me this videos and instantly recognised her on the thumbnail. If you're are reading this Aju, many greetings from your Australian friend, Z

    I’m a man and the first thing that came to mind when I heard her say she’s never dated, was she needs to relocate. As beautiful as she is, she’s not benefiting by staying where she’s at. I hope that this girl has the ability to travel the world, so she can move past this stigma she’s stuck in. She’s so forgiving and understanding towards the constant harassment she’s endured, and clearly she’s adapted some good life skills that are influenced of decorum and huge respect towards others.

    • @ItsMe-so4nd
      @ItsMe-so4nd 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +63

      The suggestion for her to be able to travel had nothing to do with her being hit on by men. It was for her to be able to go and experience how much bigger the world is than the one she’s stuck in currently. I mean no disrespect towards anyone, but no girl should ever feel ignored like she’s feeling or have to hear these negative condescending ignorant comments she has no control over. It’s unfair that she has to feel like this when clearly she’s so kind towards people and able to smile while out in public. People having to go through such harsh criticism often seem to have a negative effect with interaction skills especially in public.

      Because SHE´S NOT. Not African and not Japanese. It´s a MIX. Nothing wrong with that. A Chinese person can´t be Japanese too. Not even after 80 years living in Japan.. 95% of all countries on the planet are like that. Totally NORMAL. You cant change your ethnicity. it´s not possible. USA, Canada and Australia dont count as a Country because ALL of them are foreigner. They suppressed all the natives there. And west Europe are suffering the same right now. MORE people of color (like ME) and less Natives.
      I suffering the same issue. I´m Portuguese but born and raise in Germany. But i will NEVER be a German. That´s not possible. And i never went to Portugal. And i have 0 Portuguese friends. Imagine being on another planet and force Aliens to be accepted as one of them. That´s not possible. We all have the same Value but we are not the same. And it´s not a bad thing...

With your input here along with your other remarks in the comments section of just this video you painted such a clear and vivid portrait of envy that all the green is used up. Try to add some colors of kindness, compassion, empathy etc. into your life, if not for those interact with you at least do it for yourself. I don't know if this is how you are normally, if you're going through a rough time or just having a bad day, but I sincerely hope you feel happier soon. I'm not saying that racism or doesn't exist in Japan like anywhere else; But, unless it's motivated by hatred, asking where you come from or what your origins are isn't racism, it's curiosity. People do that with me all the time because of my first and last name.
      Is it annoying? Not for me, as people getting interested in me is better than people ignoring me. I also ask others what their origins are, it's a good conversation starter.

    The world has a problem of thinking their perception of the world is the only way the world works. We as humans would be so much better off being more humble and work on expecting the unexpected. We know so little yet think we know the world so when something or someone “different” comes around, it surprises us. When in reality, this is normal existence, we have just been small minded.
    This young woman is so charming, smart, and beautiful! Watching this video I felt my muscles tighten as if I didn’t want to take up space in the world. Like I wanted to get out of the way. Been to japan for the first time last month. I was traveling solo and got a kind of gaijin blues. People would avoid sitting next to me on trains or in a public bath. I've been studying japanese for a while now and can hold my own in basic conversation or interacting with store clerks, but I've experienced people not realizing I was talking in japanese and replying back in broken english. I can only imagine what that has to be like when you are native and lived there your whole life.
    Also, Aju seems like a wonderful person. Don't let it get to you, Aju.

      Tokyo is also a lot less friendly than other places in Japan. Usually the biggest landing city in a country is where the meanest people are ton foreigners (London, Paris, New York City), or to people in general. It’s usually the most fast paced place with grumpy overworked people who feel they pay way too much for things compared to the rest of their country, and they resent the tourists because they believe the tourists are the reason why everything is “tourist prices,” and for crowding their public events and public resources. There are nice people in Tokyo, but you’re also more likely to run into people who just have a bad attitude, even for a polite society like Japan’s.
      Generally, people get a friendlier welcome in places like Kyoto, Osaka, Sapporo, and other major Japanese cities outside of Tokyo. You can visit some of the shrines and check out the fox forest and cat island, go on a sleep capsule overnight train. They’re generally friendlier in settings further away from the main hub of Tokyo. So many travelers have talked about this on youtube, definitely worth taking a look at some of what they have to say on this topic.

    • @kathleencove
      @kathleencove 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +12

      Also, as for replying in English, try not to take it too personally. I can definitely understand how that would be frustrating for a Japanese person who was born and raised there, and I really hope that Japan starts to recognize their interracial minorities a little more. However, for most tourists, when they reply in English, they’re not doing this to insult you, they actually believe they are doing you a kindness and a favor. Try to keep in mind that probably a majority of the tourists they see every year don’t speak Japanese at all or only speak very little, but by contrast, Japanese people have been speaking their “broken English” for decades as part of their job serving tourists. They believe they’re giving you good customer service and trying to be respectful. Try not too get too sad or take offense at someone doing something with good intentions, they’re just trying to do their job. When Japanese people first moved to western countries as immigrants, hotels and restaurants and even some trains absolutely refused to serve them at all and would leave signs out saying “no [expletive slur for Asian people]” for business.
      Just a little perspective. It could be a lot worse, and the Japanese people speaking English to you are just trying to meet you halfway and they mean well.

Their two sons were born and raised there, and naturally spoke fluent Japanese. The family returned to Austria, and one evening were watching a puppet show here in Vienna, with an audience of mostly Japanese tourists, including children. My friend's sons were bored and started telling dirty jokes in Japanese. The tourist's children in the audience were amazed and called their parents' attention to the white boys speaking Japanese. And the parents _couldn't hear that they were speaking Japanese._ Only their children noticed.

    I would imagine it is probably somewhat easier for those who are Japanese-White mixed and especially Japanese mixed with some other Asian ethnicity. Being Japanese-Black probably makes you stand out the most due to the darker skin. Add the tattoos to that equation, which tend to be less accepted in Japan than it most other countries due to their association with Yakuza and criminal activities, and it seems like a recipe for the loneliness she feels. As much as she loves Japan, she might be happier somewhere like Hawaii, where there is both a fairly large Japanese community (16% of the population), and where she would fit in better with native Hawaiians due to the mix of Japanese and Black looking somewhat Polynesian.

    In Korea, even when people are fluent in Korean but look non-native, people use broken English to talk to them. It seems like Koreans who do this are excited about an opportunity to practice the speaking English or they see it as a way to connect with a foreigner or they see it as being considerate.

Each of the three brothers look more or less Japanese. My son-in-law looks Japanese whilst one brother looks Eurasian and another looks like he comes from a Mediterranean country. Luckily, there are over 300 ethnicities in Australia and mixed race children are common so, there are very few issues.

    The nail that sticks out will get hammered down..
    This whole culture of being polite and good hosts yet gossiping behind people's backs. Not wanting to cause conflict but actually disliking someone.. never telling them because that would be 'impolite'. No venting of one's feelings because you're being rude, inconvenient, burdening someone.. so trauma and sui*cidality doesn't get spoken about. Ignoring poverty, wanting to seem perfect as a country and treating one's that speak up on their home situations as if they are, once again, burdening others (legit knew of an artist, beautiful work, whose whole family was poor.. yet they couldn't talk to 'friends' about it cause they would get annoyed.. it's rude). Working til you're sick because you'll be letting others down if you stay home and rest.
    Japan, you're beautiful and well maintained. You've perfected cleaning your streets and providing great food even at small convenience stores that would otherwise have tons of unhealthy and cheap foods... But you're xenophobic, two faced and your own children want to leave

      I overall agree, but my impression is that most Japanese people love their country and would never want to leave. Many have never even been abroad, or barely. However, those who feel alienated feel VERY alienated and do want to leave, or find like-minded people to hang out with in these multicultural venues/meeting spots (I'm thinking mainly music).
      I find Japan to be very much like Europe in terms of the xenophobia part (actually, there are more cultural similarities, but I digress). Most will have "the correct opinion" if you ask them on the street, but when push comes to shove, many of them will start to sound apologetically xenophobic; just like in Europe. It's easy to be "open-minded" when 98 % of the population is of the same perceived ethnicity, but just wait if that number drops below 90 %, there'll be loads of discussions on multiculturalism, about assimilation, taking in less foreigners, etc., etc. The same discussions that have been going on in Europe, intensifying during the last two decades or so.

      You also have to understand the upbringing. Japanese laws aren't as open as other countries like the US. It's harder to get citizenship their as a foreigner to the point where if you aren't ethnically Japanese, you have to get things like work visas to even be possibly accepted. Being minority looking can be rough in countries like that. There's even certain parts of Asia that have never seen a black person in general. I remember seeing a video, possibly south korea, where it's so secluded that it said that one person was confused why their skin was so dark as far as suggesting if they took a bath, they would be cleaner.

I have friends who were born in Japan just like her and don’t look Japanese at all, but they were treated extremely well in schools and were well accepted in various situations. The hand of friendship & understanding has no color. The trick to recognizing it, as well as offering it yourself, is not "seeing no color" as some people believe but rather learning to see PAST color and not judge based foremost upon it.
    I know from experience that this is easier said than done, especially in cultures as historically homogenous as Japan. Overcoming these patterns of human nature is never easy, nor does it happen quickly. It's an uphill battle for sure.
    But it's not impossible, and I do believe it'll get better. What can be painful about societal change is accepting the harsh reality that change takes time and rarely ever happens when we want it to. This deosn't mean you give up, of course.
    It's just a reminder to be realistic as well as optomistic. What helps me sometimes when I'm depressed is to remember the most important thing: Even if I don't live to see the future benefitted by that change, future generations will.

      To be FAIR, you don't know her circumstances. From my lived experience, when you're ostracized you tend to find comfort amongst outcasts and delinquents. Sometimes making choices to fit in with the group that's kind to you. What might seem illogical to an observer, could make complete sense given the right context. I'm not saying that's why she decided to get tattoos, I don't know her, but we should all strive for empathy over judgement.
