    I forgot to mention that I'm 63 yrs old and retired now and still learning many new and interesting things on You tube including your paint tests. Keep it up so I can lean even more from your experience. I have many woodworking, construction and automotive skills but you can always translate new and different skills to those and other projects as well. I'm just beginning to get into detailed painting for my future guitar and car projects. Your insight is invaluable for those.

    I bought this after watching this review and all I can is WOW. The best chrome for hobby and cheap, with no smell. So glad you reviewed and Green Stuff World makes an excellent Yoda green acrylic for the airbrush as well. I used it to paint my life sized 3D printed Master Yoda and it is spot on. Keep up the great work and I can't understand how you don't have 500K subscribers? Your reviews are the best there is and you are truly helping makers and hobbyists up their games man.

    Great review! I got some of the “dab-on” type and found the results could be somewhat lumpy. Like you said, if you try to brush it out, it messes with the mirror effect. Since the stuff is alcohol based, I cleaned my brush with alcohol and tried again. Apparently, I had just enough alcohol left in my brush to affect the surface tension because when I dipped the brush in the paint it instantly self-leveled! I experiment with it some more and found out that if you have a lumpy surface, if you dip your brush in 91% IPA and then just touch the lumps, it self levels right on the piece! Initially, it looks like the mirror effect is shot but wait a few seconds and it returns!
    Give that a try!

    • @epgrandpa9055
      @epgrandpa9055 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@onemansvideos2134 Hey! I’m glade you found it helpful. The alcohol trick also makes the paint able to be applied by airbrush. I put about three drops of paint in the airbrush cup and then one drop of alcohol. Unlike the paint that is meant to be airbrushed, this mix can be blasted in pretty thick. As soon as it levels it takes on the mirror shine. It takes a while to dry (I give it a day), but it shines like chrome should.

    I masked and airbrushed Green Stuff Airbrush Chrome over MCW 2K Clear Coat which was over MCW Gloss Black Enamel. This was for the chrome trim on my '50 Oldsmobile. It sprayed and dried beautifully, until a few days later, when areas of the chrome DISAPPEARED! I've had to remask and airbrush all the chrome trim with my old reliable - Molotow Chrome, after throwing the Green Stuff in the trash.

    I love this stuff. I’ve got a lot of my nascar friends using this. I did a full body spray out using the brushable chrome and it came out amazing. I laid a medium coat first, then a heavy coat. You should really do a spray out of the brushable chrome, you’ll like it!👍👍

    • @bigchef2112
      @bigchef2112 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@michaelscarola50 I bought a bottle of their thinner. I ordered it direct. Took 12 days. But, neither one of them need thinner. I used my Badger 105 with a .5 needle. First pass will be spotty, but build it up, and out of nowhere the chrome finish will pop out at you when it’s thick enough. Like brushing, it needs to go on thick. The nice thing about it being alcohol based when it evaporates and dries, it dries thin, not with that heavy oversprayed thick enamel look.

    Thank you for testing all those relatively expensive chrome paints for us so we can make an informed decision om which to us depending on application. I have learned a lot from your videos even though I haven't built models for quite a while but am now getting into rebuilding and modifying electric guitars and want to paint them in a chrome with a candy color over for the colored chrome effect and don't want to spend more on the paint job than I have in the rest of the guitar. I started with a cheap Chinese built Starcaster/Strat I got for under $100 and modifying it heavily....I had thought that the Molotow liquid chrome was best until you tested the Allclad chrome line and was blown away by the results and when cleared over with the pledge brand floor clear which I understand is an acrylic, it will save me a lot of cash. I plan to test with a mini spray gun and an airbrush to see which will yield the best results on a test piece as the guitar body is so much larger than your tiny model kit pieces but I think the methods and techniques you use will translate well for my purpose, and if I can save by not having to buy paints in bulk, but mixing in small batches for each project, it may cost a bit more per each paint job but save waste overall and yield better results overall. I plan to experiment with mica powers in different ratios in clear to see if less mica added will result in iridescent clear colors or candy colors as a result and if mixing colors of mica results in different colors of color shifting mixtures. you might try that on camera for us to see the potential results.

  • @billclark5943

    The most reflective chrome I've found is the GSW Chrome but the "brush" version sprayed through the airbrush. Only caveat is the application has a very narrow window. Needs very wet coats and the outside edge of the spray pattern creates a dull, sandblasted look that isn't fixed by the next pass but if you can get it wet just the right amount you will get a true mirror finish. I need to try reducing it slightly to see if that helps.

    • @billclark5943
      @billclark5943 ปีที่แล้ว

      Edit- tried .5, .35 and .2 nozzles 10, 15, and 20 psi on each. Best result was Badger Sotar 2020 (.2 nozzle), 20psi, 1 dust coat followed by 2 heavy coats waiting a few minutes in between the 2 heavy coats. Brush about 1- 1.5" away and overlap the .25" wide pattern the Badger makes. Keeping brush normal to the surface (curved spoon) seemed to minimize outgassing voids. If it does have voids throw more over it. Still need some time to refine the technique but the result is an extremely reflective mirrored surface. On par with Revell

    I tried this paint, then stumbled onto this video. I like the paint & I'm not a fan of acrylic paint since the Model Master line is off the market. Dries flat & even. Only color I've used so far is orange for a test plane & Navy jet trainers. I found it sloppy to clean out airbrush (my reason for dislike of acrylic paints). I recommend using a reducer to slow drying in the airbrush, kept clogging my 5mm needle. until i added reducer. I also kept a long stick gun cleaning swab & water to keep spray tip cleaned up. I prefer an external mix airbrush for spraying acrylics. Although I have my issues with this paint, I'm very happy with the results. These issues are unique to ME! Pigment seems very fine & plentiful, nice coating & like there is more than just orange, flame orange I liked best.

    That fantastic !! , Would you please test what nitro fuel and castor oil would do to the chrome ? , I wonder if you could use it on a running model.

    AMAZING and thank you for this video.
    Did you use just a regular gloss black
    Spray paint as a base?

    Lol this video reminded me i ordered some stuff from michtoy and they attached a slip of paper for an item saying it was backordered and it would come in 3-4 weeks. That was back in april and they never sent me anything

    I tried the chrome over tamiya x1 gloss black, which was over STYNYLREZ black primer, and instead of a chrome, I got more of a dark steel look. But when I sprayed it over a regular non primered spoon, it chromed beautiful, but of course whiped off when buffing.
    Did I do something wrong with the primer & X1? Used a .3 needle @15psi

      @barbatosrex9473  ปีที่แล้ว

      Not sure here, I use Tamiya Spray Can Gloss black TS-14 and that's a lacquer, the X-1 is an acrylic. Maybe that's where you are losing it. Also no need for a primer, the Tamiya on plastic is fine

      @barbatosrex9473 I'll give it a go without the primer. Thx. New to painting, so I'm still learning the ins & outs.

      @@barbatosrex9473I never use primer with Tamiya paints on plastics works excellent no runs and finishes superb and very rarely use clear coat either unless I have a reason to change the finish ...etc just a bit of Tamiya polish if needed looks great and it's tough paint anyway I find...

    Hey Mr Rex.....another great video. Two questions, one, if you had to choose just one chrome paint what would it be. Two, how do you think your automotive 2K clear would work on that chrome.

    • @barbatosrex9473
      @barbatosrex9473  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I like this chrome and would choose this but if it's hard for you to find Alclad is no slouch. I'm waiting for a week for this to fully cure before I test clears over it but I think it's fairly durable and might be better off without a clear.

    My results for what it's worth. Sprayed three spoons with tamiya x1, x4, x14. Light mist coats produced a dull aluminum look on the first two. The x14 , a sky blue produced a nice nickel chrome. Very pleased with that, but after twenty four hours I could easily rub it off with my finger. The dull aluminum ones would not rub off. I sprayed 2 k clear over the x14/chrome spoon. It turned into a silver. Any thoughts?

    @Barbatos Rex can you cure this stuff in a food dehydrator? I have a piece I chromed for a client and need to mail it to him but I want to make sure it is fully cured first.

    When I spray this I get what looks like fine black specks on my spoon. It looked like it was maybe poor coverage from the chrome flake and gloss black primer coming though. But when I spray some more it just dulls it out with the black specks still present. Still is there after I buff it as well. Wonder what I'm doing wrong. Maybe a psi issue? When I spray molotow unthinned it looks fine. Will try alclad soon

    In my opinion GSW is the best all around chrome. I’m including ease of use, the ability to strip and re-spray. Spraying car parts in chrome, in reality, is a little tricky to get right.

    I'm surprised you were able to buff the Airbrush one. I did a spoon test myself. It looked great, and I left it alone for nearly two weeks. When I prepared to spray it on my model, I grabbed the spoon by the head and ALL the chrome paint rubbed off. Did I miss you saying that you sealed it or something?

    I have some Necrons that would look cool in chrome. If you spay clear gloss over the silver chrome, does that keep the original look, like for the blue chrome? 40K models need protection from grubby hands :-D

    I paint lures and am always looking for the shiniest most reflective chrome I can get but it HAS to be clear coated and thats where most fail miserably. Is there a clear coat that works with GSW Airbrush chrome that does'nt dull it too bad?

    Awesome video as always. I purchased the green stuff airbrush chrome impulsively and truly not expecting it to be any good. It is fantastic! It has Avery high reflective shine and is very easy to use straight out of the bottle. It’s pretty durable too. I did a head to head against Gaia notes. The Gaia notes chrome was maybe 10% more reflective, however green stuff beats it in price and availability (I think Gaia notes is 3-4xs the cost of green stuff) . The best chrome color I ever used was the Kcolor shine chrome, but that company is now defunct. green stuff airbrush chrome is now my go to.
    I can see using the Brush chrome to touch up plated parts. It will most likely be better than the Molotow pen.
