This is a lovely build and has inspired me to try my hand at it. Can I ask what color you used to paint the blue-green Bussard collectors and nacelle fins? It looks like you did an amazing job matching that paint color to the overall decal color for the strongbacks and pylons. Wonderful as always!
This kit doesn't come with the complete aztec decals anymore since Round 2 got their hands on it and they sell the sheet separately which is really annoying :(
For those who grew up with the TOS 1701, then the refit in 79, seeing her destroyed was almost traumatizing. Hands down the most beautiful Starships ever designed.
It didn't personally hit me that way when the Enterprise was destroyed in The Search for Spock (having an entire sequence of explosions made it rather hilarious to me, especially with how the saucer shattered like an eggshell...), BUT, I can guess that it hit an entire generation or three of fans much like the death of Optimus Prime in 1986's The Transformers: The Movie. Which would've been seriously funky timing if any Transformers fans were also Star Trek fans, since The Voyage Home and thus the Enterprise-A also landed in 1986; (*checks the release dates of the two movies*) losing Optimus in August, only to turn around and get the Enterprise back in November.
Polar Lights has done justice to the Star Trek ships over the years and hope to see more from them. The refit USS Enterprise kit is really cool even the battle damage decals are really neat.
Wow it's amazing how much you made that damage pop by adding the vertical and horizontal lines to it. Was kind of worried as before that it was just grey/blackish blobs but the second you did that my brain immediately saw the scorched innards of a starship. Very well done, as always! Really making me want to try one of these kits!!
Built this last year and it turned out pretty close to yours. Didn't have an airbrush so the deflector dish looks a little different, used a chrome blue to get close. Lost a piece during building so I bought a second kit to use for spare parts, now I'm tempted to build it out with battle damage. Nice.
The Constitution refit has always been my favorite iteration of the Enterprise. You did a really nice job with this. I haven’t built a model kit in years. And this video reminds me that I probably still don’t have the patience to do it properly. So I’ll just have to live vicariously through folks like you. Great work.
Maybe that battle damage on the starboard side was from the debris of the Genesis explosion hitting the Enterprise as she fled the scene. The other damage was by Khan.
There are a lot of people out there who love the refit and A versions of the Enterprise above all other types/class's yet no one has made a video game with the original series movie style of ships with appropriate weapon effects. Every game has to be with the new ships (starting with the D and going from there) and that constant phaser beam. Personally, I think a game developer could have a real winner on their hands if they make a video game featuring original series movie style ships. They will have to get a little creative when designing some class's of and race specific ships (we only got to see 4 federation - 5 if you count the B different from the Excelsior, 2 klingon and a tiny freighter that commander Kruge's bird destroyed). Cruisers, destroyers, frigates in the light, standard, heavy and battle sizes, not to mention all the one offs, prototypes and singular builds they could come up with. Maybe some fan feedback/input, made with talented developers who have a passion for game play and of the original movie series...it would be a hit but everyone in the business seems dead set on forgetting that era and moving on with tng stuff.
Great improvisation on the battle damage with incredible detail and depth. Always fun to see different approaches and build techniques. Back in the 80’s we use to apply battle damage to our AMT kits with Testors model glue and a number 2 pencil to create texture as it dried to look like the hull had been torn open and then painting black over it after the glue had dried. Quick, easy and fun.
I really believe McCoy had a travel agency on the side. He got Admiral Kirk a trip on the Enterprise, then the rest.happens. So the whole thing is McCoys idea. And Kirk comes out as a Captain again with 1701-A as a new ship.
Supposedly by the novels it was 18 months between movies and the Enterprise had a encounter with Klingons that led to damage. However in the comics the ship fought the Romulans which led to the battle damage. Great, great job on the model, mate. That was my first encounter of Star Trek in 1984 was this particular look of the Enterprise Saavvy!!!!
This is still the finest-looking, prettiest version of the Enterprise I've seen. I think it's my favorite motion picture shooting miniature. Yes, I like this even better the Star Wars models. I think my next favorite miniature might actually be the original Battlestar Galactica.
Wicks from fireworks provide EXCELLENT phaser damage, as do smaller fireworks. Haven’t tried them on models with paint or decals, but they look great on ones that don’t. You’d be the man to try! You’re a brilliant painter. Really wish TH-cam was around when I was a kid all the way up through college when I really did models.

Nice, I have this kit done in my office at work. I painted the base color of Testors White Lighting, which is a pearlescent white, and then did all of the decals, came out great and was a fun kit. I want to get the Reliant to go with it.
Very well done! I have this model kit. Haven't finished it yet, because... Your painting effects are exceptional, the deflector and battle damage in particular.

I know what you mean about the decals. I worked on and off on the 1400 scale Enterprise-D decals for 18 months before I got them finished. First Aztecs, then Escape Pods and Windows, and finally the Marking Decals. But now it's done and waiting for the clear coat.
Honestly this is probably my favorite iteration of the Enterprise, specifically with the battle damage. I think it gives the ship a lot of character and makes it feel that much more "real". Your work on the battle damage specifically came out really nice. That soot weathering powder added that extra bit of scoring or burnt appearance to the edges. Maybe its because I can't see it up close or in person but the aztecing decals still came out better here than on the Enterprise C, IMO. Overall, excellent work and I can't wait to see what your going to do next!
The damage on the starboard side of the ship were never explained. Khan only fired at the port side. Unless while fleeing the Genesis wave they were hit with flying debris that was being pulled in from space.
Absolutely fantastic work, the attention to detail you applied to this was incredible. I can see you have a real passion and imagination as well as a lot of patience. For what looked like just some tiny snap together kit you've transformed it into something that would look right at home in the actual film! The simulated damage and individual deck detailing looks amazingly acurate I pictured the scene and vision the inside decks breaching just from looking at it. I wonder if you considered or maybe have tried using a hot safety pin or something similar to make a few laser holes, or even drag it along to damage it more, i've seen this done to simulate burn damage and it can look pretty decent if done right, of course it can also be a bit OTT. Melting pin holes looks great for bullet holes, not sure how if it would be practical one this small scale though. This is the first video i've watched after just happening along, wiill definately watch more and look forward to you doing more. Very pleasing to watch and most theraputic with great commentary that often can be too loud in most videos, your voice is most relaxing. Thank you for taking the time and the effort to share this.
Absolutely Amazing! I particularly like that you went with your own instincts on what looks right. The original model and what ends up on film sometimes have little resemblance to one another. Not to mention the artist's (your) vision. I was shocked by how three dimensional the damage looked with the smudging applicator. Great job!
Just my opinion but you did a great job considering it is a full decal kit. Love all the battle damadge except, for the small gray rectangles put in it on the sides. The damadge on the top saucer is awwweessoome.. Spot on. Once again wonderful job!!
@@amead78 A later systems overload, or cascade failure, caused by the damage inflicted during the on-screen attack? We know it's just ILM making a nicer shot, and also for plot reasons, it wouldn't make sense to 'retire' the Enterprise with the small amount of damage seen in TWOK...
Looks Amazing! Love that you decided to push through on your vision. Love the work & effort put into detailing you inspire me & my work., helped on the Falcon.. and will help in the future I’m sure..
The model turned out nicely. If you think this one helped drive you to the brink, imagine how the 1/350 scale kit would have been! The Refit's seem to be the hardest kits to assemble in their sizes with the exception of the original AMT/ERTL 1960s kits.
Try the 537 Refit if you want something hard to get assembled. Especially the Starboard Nacelle Pylon Alignment. A trick I found: install the nacelles first, and use them as a guide for proper nacelle alignment.
I first built that one way back in 93, 94 maybe, back when I was more interested in just having the ship than modelling. It had no clear coats, barely any paint, but I loved it. Even when the pylons constantly snapped off.
@@modelchili Yes, I had one too,it was all crooked. It was lost in a move three years ago, but I still have the shuttle, which is better suited for the 350 scale Refit actually. So I use the smaller 350 scale Shuttles for my new 537 1701-A. Would you like to see the video of my progress on the Enterprise-A so far?
Absolutely amazing! You've done a fantastic job on the model and battle damage. Glad you saw it through and finished it. In the novelisation of Star Trek 3 they encountered the klingons on their way home to explain the extra battle damage which ILM added for the film :)
Fantastic work! I was taken by your technique to simulate the detail within the battle damage locations. I was also curious how you do your photography/videography specifically the "beauty shots" at the end. Perhaps a tutorial on that sometime? Been following you for some time now and have watched most of your vids. Can't wait for the next one!!
Great work man. This was a nightmare for me since I'd never built a full decal trek kit but I feel the frustration. Taking notes from what you did will help me to improve should I every try this again. The ending of the video had me laughing though. Thanks again!
Thinking of using the paint scheme you outlined here, along with a set of Aztec decals for my 1/350 scale Polar Lights Enterprise. I had originally bought a set of Aztec paint templates for it years ago, but I think I'd drive myself bonkers trying to airbrush in every little detail.
Nicely done! I had doubts about your paint job with the damage, but your technique worked great. I always imagined the damage on the starboard side and under side of the saucer section were the "exit wounds".
Far be it from me to give you (a professional) a tip but from experience I've found that white school glue thinned down like a wash will help decals stay down even in detailed areas and once dried any haze around or on top of the decal can be cleaned up with water and a cotton swab.
Great tutorial! Not sure if you can get it in the UK, but you may want to try Solvaset if you can get your hands on it. I find it to be more aggressive than the Micro set for recalcitrant decals. It really softens the decal so it has to be in its final position before you consider even putting a drop of solution on it.
Lovely work! I always thought that the Enterprise refit model was the best iteration of it of any in the Star Trek series. I also really love the Space 1999 Eagle it has to be said. The Klingon Battlecruiser from the Motion Picture is up there with them too!
Looks wonderful, so don't be to hard on your self. I always seem to manage to pick up kits that the plastic fitting is out, its been a bit of a curse for me really.
Good job. Yes that was a tough build, but I'm glad you finished it. Love the battle damage... Before you put Scotty's plates on, I was thinking that the ribbing of the superstructure kinda had a 3D effect. Very nice. Also I love the purplish inner warp nacelle detail. Thanks for an entertaining video. Keep up the great work! :)
I have many different sizes of the "Re-Fit" but my GEM is the 1/350 Scale which is a DAMN big model! But I also have this size too. I LOVE the 1/2500 scale kits and I have a CRAP Ton of those of various ships from Star Trek. Alot of them are actually Resin Kits I purchased over the years! :)
Out of interest, you painted a blue green colour onto the nacelle and was wondering what blue green you used as I'm not really sure and don't want to muck about with trying lots of different colours. Thanks
Nicely done! It's funny though. Round 2 recently announced a re-release of this kit with battle damage decals! I hope you'll cover the soon to be released 1/1000 Discovery Enterprise. I've pre ordered mine.
I still have to build the 2500 scale Discovery and get the 2500 Disco-prise, which will match my 8 ship 2500 scale Enterprise set. I will use the Refit from the 3 ship Cadet Series and decals from Federation Models to build a 2500 scale Enterprise-A.
YES, do hack away at chunks to make the damage look less like a cosmetic blunder in drydock. I'm about to build this same model, but I haven't decided if I'm gonna include damage. If I do, there's no question, I'll use my dremel to really get in there and F things up.
@@modelchili Ok. But it's my first resin model in a couple of decades. Then I went to school and got an AA in computer animation. Oh. If you were thinking about going to the Art institute to get a computer animation degree, I'd recommend sticking your head in an oven first and see how you like that. If I would have thought to do that, well, you know. That's what I would have done instead.
Gorgeous! Absolutely gorgeous! "The Search for Spock" ties with "The Wrath of Khan" as my favorite Star Trek film for its themes of friendship and loyalty. And the Enterprise was as much of a character as the people aboard her, even battered and crippled as she was, giving her all to the bitter end so that Spock may have another chance at life. I decided to omit the Aztec decals on mine and paint a lot of those details on that were represented by decal (I just think that looks better at this small a scale,) but seeing this video made me think that if I build this kit again, I should at least try the Aztec decals out (they did work out well for my 1:2500 scale Enterprise-D.) Also very clever how you achieved the battle damage! Again, I'm inspired! Thank you. :D LLAP
I've recently purchased this kit, i had the hardest time putting in the windows. Next it's the Aztecing ,, i wish it was peel & stick instead of moisten & slide off.
Excellent work, yet again. Have you thought of building the entire Enterprise lineage, including all aircraft carriers, and the Space Shuttle, and display them together? Live long and prosper.
As far as the additional battle damage goes at the beginning of Search, there is a Beta Canon explanation that the Enterprise had an altercation with I believe Klingons between the end of Wrath and the beginning of Search on their way back to Earth.
Really like the size of the model and the details looks awesome well done will review on your vids when starting back star trek model again keep up the good work 👍
What kind of brushes are you using to help push that putty in at 3:44? Are those some kind of disposable makeup applicators? I'm trying to find something similar.
Dude what lol I got the same exact model and they didn’t include the Aztec decals I thought I had to buy them separately or something I guess I got boned lol I’m definitely buying another one now haha great work man . Kahn and Spock definitely my two favorite movies from the trek original crew run
The newer kit that includes battle damage decals doesn't include Aztecs. You want to find the older version, like the one I have here, that one includes Aztecs.
@@modelchili ok cool that makes sense mine did come with battle damage decals . I switched to this version because as a kid I had atleast 5 enterprise models from undiscovered country with the shuttle and could never get the pylons and warp engines to stay up they always fell down so I figured this would be good and it is it’s a great model and it’s everything we need except the Aztec so now I know look for the older version. I love the refit enterprise definitely my favorite variant. Thanks for the tip I appreciate it man live long and prosper
Exquisite model. One of my favorite designs. I do wish the battle damage was a bit more tangible though. There's a guy who goes by Truegunpla that uses a soldering iron to create exactly the type of gouges the battle with Khan left on the Enterprise...
I have the 50th Anniversary Enterprise model and I picked up all the the aztec decals for it. Whenever I get around to building, I hope that it goes well. It surprised me that you have a Northwest Short Line cutting matt. NWSL makes a lot of model rail tools (my other hobby).
wrath of khan and search for spock movies had the best looking enterprise model. also best bgm. the refit is best looking space craft of all time. i been wanting to get a 3d printing of my 1701- i . that i made years ago
That looks amazing! I've been trying to do something similar with digital models. I swear it's got to be easier with a physical one. You don't have to worry about a map being off and half the texture showing up on the opposite end of the ship. lol I wish I had your patience and steady hands though. Just amazing.
Interesting, to see how they modified the model, I am finishing a 1/575 and the nacelle fastenings are very different. Easier to get right the first time, ha-ha! I would shudder at having to put all those "Aztec" decals on the model! Thanks!

I was also curious how you do your photography/videography specifically the "beauty shots" at the end. Perhaps a tutorial on that sometime? Been following you for some time now and have watched most of your vids. Can't wait for the next one!!
Thank you! Yeah good idea, I'm planning to do a tour of my set up once I clean up this mess of a room lol.
Great work man. This was a nightmare for me since I'd never built a full decal trek kit but I feel the frustration. Taking notes from what you did will help me to improve should I every try this again. The ending of the video had me laughing though. Thanks again!
That's my silly voice haha, I love that he added it and that you found it funny.
Great work. Especially on such a small scale.
My old AMT has real playtime battle damage 😎
Cheers!
Thank you! That's the thing with modelling sometimes, it can look dodgy before it all comes together.
You've did an FANTASTIC job Sir😀😀😀😀😀😀😀👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you so much 😀
I wish that I had 10% of your talent and patience for modeling. 👍
It just takes a bit of time and trial and error!
Fantastic. Love the battle damage.
Cheers!
Brilliant using clear red over the clear blue on the warp chillers to give it a more violet effect seen in the film.
Thanks 😃 I'm glad it worked out!
Looks great, man. Your work is always inspiring.
Thank you!
Far be it from me to give you (a professional) a tip but from experience I've found that white school glue thinned down like a wash will help decals stay down even in detailed areas and once dried any haze around or on top of the decal can be cleaned up with water and a cotton swab.
I did not know that thanks, will be trying it out in future!
This is coming together beautifully!
Cheers!
love your vids man only just started getting into modelling and learning so much from you already
Awesome, thank you!
nice, always loved that version of the Entreprise
awesome job Chili it turned out great....keep them coming buddy
Thanks! Will do!
Thanks for the tip! I'll keep an eye out for it.
Looks really nice.. Very clean and neat. Nice build.
Thanks!
Lovely work! I always thought that the Enterprise refit model was the best iteration of it of any in the Star Trek series. I also really love the Space 1999 Eagle it has to be said. The Klingon Battlecruiser from the Motion Picture is up there with them too!
btw, why 37 dislikes? weird.
Thanks Vaughan!
Very well done. Thank you for sharing. Enjoyed your video very much.
Thank you very much!
It looks absolutely Incredible!!
Cheers!
Look awesome, I'm just about to start the decals on AMTs reliant a not going to lie I'm terrified! There massive and the hundreds!
Cheers!
Thanks! Yeah I found out about the battle damage soon after I bought this, typical! The 1/1000 Discoprise would be cool.
Stunning. Simply stunning.
Looks great, awesome job on the battle damage. :)
Cheers!
The Refit is hands down my favorite Enterprise. She reminds me of an old muscle car. The later ships stated going all aerodynamic and curvy. LOL
Discovery's version of TOS Enterprise looks pretty good... kinda between the TOS and Motion picture Enterprise...
Man I'd totally buy one of these of you were doing it for resale.
YES, do hack away at chunks to make the damage look less like a cosmetic blunder in drydock. I'm about to build this same model, but I haven't decided if I'm gonna include damage. If I do, there's no question, I'll use my dremel to really get in there and F things up.
That's cool, would love to know how it turns out!
I decided to omit the Aztec decals on mine and paint a lot of those details on that were represented by decal (I just think that looks better at this small a scale,) but seeing this video made me think that if I build this kit again, I should at least try the Aztec decals out (they did work out well for my 1:2500 scale Enterprise-D.)
Also very clever how you achieved the battle damage! Again, I'm inspired! Thank you. :D LLAP
Thank you!
I've recently purchased this kit, i had the hardest time putting in the windows. Next it's the Aztecing ,, i wish it was peel & stick instead of moisten & slide off.
I got this kit to do too, you've calmed many of my fears for the decals :D
Nice!
Damm your model could realy be in a Star Trek movie! An i really liked the technique that you made for the battle damadge! 👍🏻
Thank you so much 😀
Excellent work, yet again.
The damage also matches the damage control read out in Wrath of Khan, during Khan's initial attack exactly. "He knew exactly where to hit us."
Been doing to many star wars bandai revell models, got to get back into star trek model again
It's a nice change of pace. 😎
Really like the size of the model and the details looks awesome well done will review on your vids when starting back star trek model again keep up the good work 👍
Awesome job it looks just it did in the search for spock
Thank you!
@@modelchili your welcome
What kind of brushes are you using to help push that putty in at 3:44? Are those some kind of disposable makeup applicators? I'm trying to find something similar.
Yeah they're just pointed cotton swabs I get from the supermarket. The pointed ones are pretty hard to find sometimes.
Beautiful work!
Cheers!
Wow, looks awesome, well done 🙂 thanks for share with us
Exquisite model.
It was just the smallest cutting mat I could find at my local hobby shop. They do sell a lot of model rail products.
Mate I love watching your videos , absolutely brilliant 👌👌👌👌
Glad you like them!
wrath of khan and search for spock movies had the best looking enterprise model. also best bgm.
the refit is best looking space craft of all time.
i been wanting to get a 3d printing of my 1701- i . that i made years ago
Great job with the kit. I got this kit a few days ago but it did not contain the Aztec decals thou
That looks amazing! I've been trying to do something similar with digital models. I swear it's got to be easier with a physical one. You don't have to worry about a map being off and half the texture showing up on the opposite end of the ship. lol I wish I had your patience and steady hands though. Just amazing.
I work with some 3D artists so know what you go through lol! And thank you. 👍
Interesting, to see how they modified the model, I am finishing a 1/575 and the nacelle fastenings are very different. Easier to get right the first time, ha-ha! I would shudder at having to put all those "Aztec" decals on the model! Thanks!
Very, very well done, really well done! Bet you are sick of decals now!
Thanks JJ! Yeah pretty much haha.
Lovely! Excellent work!
Thank you very much!
Would love to see you do a battle damaged Miranda class to go with this one.
Would like to see the Enterprise D... my favorite Enterprise.
Great job, looks fantastic!!!!
Thank you! Cheers!
Have you thought of doing two kits with fibre optic lights of the Reliant firing phasers into the Enterprise? Is that possible now with current tech?
Someone has done this! th-cam.com/video/n2Z1TAfMzPA/w-d-xo.html
What a Beaut! Maybe you should try and do a Battle damaged NX-01 Enterprise! I'd like to see how you'd pull that off.
Polar lights came out with decals with that battle damage for st 2. Along with battle damage decals for the Reliant
Yeah I did see those after I bought this kit!
