This is definitely a competition for the Mercedes S Class. If you deny it you are denying reality.

P4nZerWolF why would anyone deny that? This has always been great competition for the s class , 7 series, audi A8, jaguar xj.japans best brand by a mile .

You must be the few lucky ones to get to sit in the new LS500. Other journalists in another channel weren't allowed to sit in. Nice car really. Personally I prefer Alcantara interior than animals' skin. Loves the smooth flush with pillars side glass design, glad Lexus reintroduce this concept back. Wonderfully detailed review on the new LS500. Thank you.

For such a large and expensive luxury sedan the lack of headroom for drivers and passengers is unacceptable. I also don't understand the design choice of two dash "horns" controls sticking out.

Hi Autogelfuhl, I have seen and very impressed with how Mercedes Benz done vigorous safety test for their cars and components.. I have seen passengers walked out from a severed accident after Mercedes crash test. BMW used to disclosed their testing in the 80's sales brochures. But I have never seen Lexus disclosed their safety testing on their vehicles.

    Hey Autogelfuhl, love your channel.
I like the new design, it's time for a change. I like the new hatch look style. About the Lexus Toyota Soft Tex?! It actually quite excellent, durable, easy care, and NOT MUCH WRINKLES compare to hides. I have it on my commuter car Prius V and I love it.(great work horse). I would preferred the soft Tex material. (Cooler in the hot summer than leather and it is fine with the heated seat. Clean the soft Tex with all purpose cleaner, spray on and wipe off with micro towels. That's all....
One of my elder brother drive Lexus for decades. And my elder brother drive Mercedes for decades too.. late 80's Lexus LS was to challenged Mercedes. I drove my brothers Lexus and other brother's Mercedes S diesel. I am much younger than them. I drive BMW and now Porsches, Hellcat, my daily Prius V and my my wife drive a RX Lexus. To my knowledge and experience, Lexus is a bullet proof car, low maintenance and very reliable. German cars can be expensive at time. But there is something special about the driving dynamic and secure feel sensation in a German cars that I have not find in a Japanese made car yet! But I heard the new Lexus and Camry has a better driving dynamic feel now.

I'm a Lexus owner (GS450h Fsport 2015) and kind of fan. But in this car 2 things are shocking me. The clock is really in a weird place, looks like they put it a last minute. And they could use another Navi controler because the touchpad is for me a bad thing. I've used it in a IS and I think it isn't good for an easy control.

Agree with Smokey, BMW and Audi will need to step up their game if they are going to compete with this and with the S class. This LS takes a page from Audi's book with the big infotainment screen that extends form the instrument panel across a good bit of the dash. Love the interior, i don't think that Germany and Sweden's oppressive black interiors are going to stack up very well against these new warm opulent interiors that I'm seeing from Volvo with the s 90 and with this car as well. I'm ok with the absence of animal skin seats, as long as they have butt-warmers that's good enough for me!

I would buy it, looks fantastic and it should be a reliable car. Only shame lexus doesn't change this multimedia command system, although every single car reviewer make a complaint. Really seems unpractical while driving. Should be something like in german triple upmarket cars. Also I think they would sell many more of those and RX cars with an optional 3.0 l six cyl diesel engine for europe market.

I love the analog clock, that is not a minus, that is a plus and Lexus did an awesome job with the interior. The touch pad is easy to get used to, it is not a minus again IMO. Also, a leather interior is not a minus, you don't want to spend $100K on a Luxury car to get cloth? So, I disagree with what you didn't like about some of the features in this car, but overall you did a good review.

    • @autogefuehl
      @autogefuehl  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Thank you for taking interest in this very important topic!
      First to the practical reasons:
      1. animal skin seats get hot in summer and you stick to the seat
      2. they are cold in winter
      3. on cloth or microfibre, you basically don’t need seat heating nor cooling
      4. animal skin seats wear out very fast and look like granny’s old sofa
      5. if you want leather look, the leatherette (faux leather) surfaces are meanwhile highly evolved and it is possible that it feels even softer and better than anything else (See our Tesla Model X review) So Tesla shows that the discussion wether you need animal skin is basically done.
Still, now to the environmental reasons:
      1. There are many productions where the cow is killed for the skin first, sometimes even alive, the skin is the most profitable single part of the body.
      2. The way the cows are held are catastrophic (see videos below)
      3. Even if a cow gets killed for meat first, you give additional money to an industry that relies on murder, pollutes the environment and harms people with chemicals.
      4. Does it really matter for which cause a mammal, that is 99 % genetically identical with us, gets killed? Would you say a cow only got slaughtered for the meat in the leg and thus it got slaughtered for the meat in the neck anyway? That doesn’t make sense.
      5. So to the often said argument, animal skin would just be a byproduct, please google/youtube "leather is not a byproduct" you will find plenty of information. A good overview on all those issues can also be found here: adaptt.org/
      6. Let's say you are standing at the meat counter. And you ask for the leg of the cow. The butcher tells you: "You can eat that without worrying, the cow was slaughtered for the neck first". The next customer demands the neck. The butcher tells him: "It's not your fault, the cow was slaughtered for the belly". An the next customer demands the hide, what answer does he get? You see, that argument of "byproduct" comes from the meat and leather industry to cover that you contribute to killing no matter which part of the body you buy.
      Special videos:
      1. A special video from Autogefühl considering the use of leather can be found here: th-cam.com/video/8f91KgbVbJQ/w-d-xo.html
      2. And another one right here: th-cam.com/video/tMNgcLE0LDU/w-d-xo.html
      3. Furthermore, you’ll find footage of leather production here, where people are walking in chemicals etc. and animals have to watch their friends being slaughtered in front of their eyes: th-cam.com/video/JipYvuDsI6s/w-d-xo.html
      timecode starting 27:46
      4. This is another video which very well summarizes the torture of leather production, shots taken at big farms which directly produce for the automotive industry: th-cam.com/video/OgHs239bAnE/w-d-xo.html
Help to raise awareness on this subject. Thanks!

This LS looks like a grown up Lexus IS. My only reservation is the available fitting height of this car. Thomas is 6 foot 1 and his head was touching the ceiling when sitting in the rear seat. And nearly touching the ceiling when sitting at the front seat.
Come on Lexus, this is the most luxurous car in your line up and a 6 foot 2 person will be difficult to fit in.

Do you have a source for that? In the press release what you describe could not be found. Lexus has not stated the longest wheelbase will be the only option in all global markets.

Boring interior and what is with the C pillar area, the extra pillar on the door is hideous all so that the rear window can go completely down.

The rear seat cushion looked like it is too low to provide thigh support and the toe space looks cramped. That's disappointing. I'll reserve my final judgement for when I see it in person and have the chance to sit in the seat myself. As it stands now, the Mercedes S-class reigns supreme for rear passenger comfort. I was hoping the Lexus would address these flaws.

With the S class the front seats are high enough for the rear seat passengers to completely stretch out their feet under the front seat. The latest Hyundai Sonata and even the Nissan Rogue have this ability, and yet this Lexus doesn't????????

As I have had a number of LS models in the past, including my current 2016, I have been a big fan of this car. I have mixed feelings about this new model, however. On the positive side, the styling is beautiful (except for what might be perceived as a "hump" at the rear similar to the first generation Porsche Panamera) and I applaud the new technology that will now be available. But I am disappointed in the lengthening of the car (my standard wheelbase model has plenty of rear legroom) and the loss of the naturally-aspirated V8. I don't like the electronic shifter in place of my current shifter that moves through the gears and I don't like control pad for the infotainment system. Finally, I am disappointed that the naming convention, which until now has accurately displayed the size of the engine (i.e. my LS460 has a 4.6 liter engine), has gone the way of BMW and Mercedes, adopting a rather helter-skelter naming system which bears no connection with the engine size.

That interior is amazing. If I were a 3rd World Dictator, I'd rather have this over the S550s that you see everywhere.
