  • This is the all new Lexus LS. It's got the style to stand out against the conservative looks of its German rivals, but does it have the substance to compete against the Audi A8, BMW 7 Series and Mercedes S-Class? I was invited to the launch to find out!

And I can tell you, I see lot of Lexus around here, off course most of them imported from Japan as second hands(used ones) with over 100k miles on it, running like new ones, even with our poor roads conditions, goes for long time without any major issues.

The reliability of the brand speaks for itself. To be honest, I think we're splitting hairs when it comes to the ride comfort between this LS, the S class, Audi A8 or BMW 7 series. Try doing that with a s class. . Lexus IS obsessed with quality... Even if s class is marginally better. Have fun spending thousands on maintenance and repairs. We own a 2004 Lexus Ls 430 and it is a great car, you can see out of it easily unlike most modern cars, it has many of the features this new one has too including adjustable radar cruise control which will apply the brakes down to 40kph. The seats are heated and cooled and you don't have to get in to a menu to use them, the satnav, aircon, sound etc is one touch of a button away. Hence I don't like the way you have to be looking at the screen in this car to do almost anything even to adjust seats. Even Lexus have succumbed to the small windows and sloping rear. I have looked up the Co-efficient wind drag on this Lexus Ls 500 model and it is not as good as the Ls430 which is 0.26. the new 2018 at its best is 0.27. I have to say from the side the Ls500 looks like a bloated Es300. One thing these Motoring reviews never say is how long that electric motor lasts and costs to replace same thing with the batteries how long do they last and what ids the replacement cost? When you shop for Solar power you can work out the cost / benefit how can you do this with the hybrid cars? I believe electric cars are a great idea and will soon take over and be much better as they have only a few parts to look after but it would be mice to know what the costs over 10 years of ownership would be. Also why do Motoring reviews always go on about the handling? This is Not a sports car if you want one Lexus make them but this is a highway cruiser. I can tell you our Ls 430 sticks to the road like glue and you would have to be driving like an idiot to make it lean to any real extent when cornering. Talk about the ride quality and the NVH, do a proper test with a decibel meter etc.

For my British friends: It's a shame that you don't get the regular powertrain. The bigger Toyota group engines are a pleasure to drive. They won't program the transmission as effectively in my opinion as Jaguar or BMW, but in the "PWR" mode - a legacy Toyota feature found in all the better models from Toyota/Lexus for years - the 8 and 10 speed transmissions do ok. It's literally a rocker switch. The 8 speed upgraded version in the IS-F and the sport versions of the LS460 (including the 2010-2012, not just F Sport) shifts in half the time of the 8 speed ZF. 100 milliseconds. With the paddles, the transmission rev matches and can downshift through multiple gears and the torque converter locks from 2nd gear plus. The older LS 460 models have sort of the sense of moving effortlessly and quietly although never wanting to jump off the line (e.g. Jag XJ or the BMW 7). I suspect that Lexus programmed and tuned this 500h to feel like the old LS460 in terms of effortless but unexciting acceleration, even if it doesn't sound the same. Remember that in the US where Matt seems to be driving the traditional LS customer is about 60, earns some 400K USD per year, and has owned at least 1 LS before and currently has about 3 cars in his (because most are men) household. I am on my second and buy mine used since I am not in the core demographic. The ES and LS cars are all over Texas and they stay on the road for 15+ years. You would rarely see a 15+ year uplevel BMW or MB in good condition even in states like Texas where the rust is not a problem, at least in comparison to number of ES/LS/RX. RX stays on the road around 20 years unless wrecked. One thing I do find (over the years, not necessarily one model) is that they look a little better in person than on a screen and they tend to grow on you. Some parts are a little cheap on some models, but the well fitted interiors are very pleasant, bank vault like places to be, imbuing a certain sense of confidence. They appeal to people with conservative taste by design, so I am not sure how the latest designs really will work. But I suspect the loyalists still will buy. Their target has always been Mercedes in terms of the core approach. No matter how fast that Merc is, it's still a Merc and has certain characteristics and a good ride. There's a certain utility in a Mercedes and Lexus takes the same view. The difference is that Lexus is way more risk averse and won't give you 100% of anything. So, no, you don't have all the electrical issues found in German cars or Jags. But you don't get 100% of their performance, either. And yes, folks, the newer Germans the US receives do have problems that stripped down, small block diesel taxi versions would not have. The taxi in Germany is not going to be a Designo-fitted V8 E-class AM model with 15K+ Euros in options that start to fail after 50K miles (if not earlier). I see lots of Mercs here in the US with weird electrical issues; a neighbor has a taillight (just 1) that won't turn off! I see a bunch of Mercs with taillights that are mismatched - brake light illuminates on one side when driving down the freeway. Jag, too, because underneath they are half German, even though they ditched Lucas. BMW here has legendary repair bills and not just for VANOS. Torque converters failing early, oil leaks, AC failures, engine management issues....one person I know had a 12K USD engine failure in a sub 100K mile loaded V8 X5. Total failure. Traditionally, the LS requires almost no maintenance whatsoever in the first 100K miles. With only a water pump and for older models the timing belt, and also dealing with the radiator because it's so hot in half the US, an LS easily goes 150K miles with only basic routine maintenance. On my LS430, I replaced an electric cooling fan, a cabin AC servo, water pump, timing belt, 2 door speakers, and the hood/trunk struts. That's it. Sold at 160K miles. Total maintenance with tires, brakes, batteries, repairs, etc. was maybe 6000 USD in the last 100K miles I had it. The starter was starting to go, but that would have been a cheap fix. No oil leaks, no transmission problems, flawless engine performance on synthetic oil. The newer LS models have more complicated suspension which do fail much earlier. I have that now on my LS 460. But that seems to be Achilles heel for all new luxo-barges. So I would urge you to give it a try. Maybe it will appeal to you. And you won't miss the repair bills!

Literally no lexus owner i know, my parents included, bought the car because of its looks. In fact, my dad refuses to trade in his LS for this new one because of how much he hates the design.

Anyway, yes this is a hideous car. I guarantee you it won't sell as well as the s class. Maybe you're right that people will stare, but that's not a good thing. If an s class and a stripped miata pulled up to a stop, more people would stare at the bare bones miata instead, but not cus it's good looking. • @KCMrecordings

As one of the people who has been a fan of this company in the past, and someone who has studied car design, I am qualified to say that this is actually offensively ugly. Since this new design language, we have no interest in trading in for any of the new Lexus models.
I am not definding the Germans either, but the current designs of Audi and BMW (not Benz) will age well
we'll all look back on this gen of Lexus the same way we look back on 90s fashion, and say oh God what were they thinking

Here in the UK MERCEDES ARE bought for the badge but people are starting to realise that they are so overpriced and highly unreliable as many competitors are taking over in certain departments. My mechanic faults the Germans for their reliability as weaknesses are starting to show in their motoring production. Lastly the parts of German cars are 3 times as much as it’s rivals.

Hello. i am from Bulgaria and i love your reviews .
What i want to say is that : there are alot of S classes here in Bulgaria (the lastest models) and i happen to know several people who own such a car from the diesel version to the 6.3amg version. The roads here are not so good and one can really test the robustnes of a car.
I in fact have driven S class S 500 2017 model for like 2 days and i want to say that :
It looks rly good on youtube,it looks really good the first one hour while you are using/driving it,but the moment you kinda get usedto it , you start noticing the cheap places ,the fake leather at some places (or the very vvery thin layers of it ,so thin you can feel unwanted stuff under it ) .
About the ride, yea it is good on an excelent to good level of roads ,anithing under that and you feel the bumps lound enough and the ride aint so smooth.
And there is the last thing :
As i said i happen to know alot of S class owners and i have never hear anyone not complaining about reliability and stuff breaking or error sings on the dashboard ,also some ridiculou things that should happen on a car that is 10 years or 200-300 thousand kilometers on it .It is a well known fact that Mercedess unfortinatelly DO NOT MAKE strong and reliable cars.
We know the ridiculous options list and the amazing price difference betwenn seamingly same model cars.
We know that as soon ppl actually manage to buy one (riduculously expensive) after 2 years you get a facelift ruining your joy of owning ''the lastest mercedess'' and many more downsides.
Lexus on the other hand is a VERY strong ,very reliable car, electronics 100 % perfect ,engine and gearbox right on spot (thou i dont like the whining gear box i had lexus rh400 very strong car 300thounsand kilometers on it and only 2 coilsprings change)
Lexus do not overwhelm you with expensive options and endless facelifts and low 100 -200 K kilometers waranty .
Lexus is a warrior ,lexus is a good people's car ,lexus is a car i would rely onmy survival ,unlike the pretencions always breaking mercedes-benz (that goes for all their models)
Lexus offers something different, polished, attention to detail and really mechanicly and electornically working piece of art ,as Merdecess offers just another piece of overpriced product that noone even turns afrer.
I wish all the best do Carwow, keep doing the good that you do :)

If Mercedes‘ are so unreliable then people wouldn‘t buy them.
They ARE reliable. Some of the things that go wrong are considered WEAR AND TEAR items and there are enough warning signs that you should have them replaced. But so many owners cheapen out on maintenance and then complain when something fails.
My old folks own two Mercedes and have been driving Mercedes‘ for decades. These are well-made and very reliable cars if you take care of them. Period.

Lexus is underestimated and should not be overlooked because it simply comes from a different country. This car is superb imo and really looks like a true luxury car and on top of that it has the reliability advantage over the German cars and that speaks for itself because Toyota/Lexus is known world wide for that.
