    I would not have gotten as far as checking continuity between chips and checking trace runs, but I would have probably gave it a good spray with electro wash and see what happens. Mine currently has the same problem, no video, but until I get the HDMI adapter in, I ain't even going to bother with it. I did lift the expansion module and reseat it and I cleaned the AV output connector but have not yet gotten inside and inspected and cleaned the internal components. Good tutorial.

    Am having similar issues with corrosion on the same chip, besides that, i just want to know , if necessary , can i replace those 68uf caps with the "normal" ones, the ones that are taller i mean. Thank you!

    • @totalfix877
      @totalfix877  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You would have to replace them with the same (micro)farad reading, but the voltage must be equal or higher than the replaced capacitor. My recommendation will be to find a similar cap to stay on the safe side.

    Nice video I picked up a n64 at goodwill for $6.99 but no video or sound trying to still figure it out its very clean but I went through it anyways but no luck yet. I checked all voltages at capacitors and for some reason the 2 bigger 220 have no volts to them any ideas? Keep up the good vids Thanks

    • @totalfix877
      @totalfix877  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      If you have a multimeter, I tend to use very precise tips to check if there is continuity between the pads and the pins of the 2 larger integrated circuits. Normally they tend to get corroded or have a cold joint. The most common issue would be the middle larger IC. Thanks for the comment and hopefully you can get your N64 up and running again! That’s a good find!!

    Been having an issue with my N64 for awhile now. I get power and A/V and can play games, but there is a random video flicker that consistently occurs during game play. It is consistent from game to game, so I believe it is something within the console. Flicker is best described as pink and yellow vertical lines on the screen. I tend to think that it occurs during higher rendering periods for the game, but that may be my imagination. Have you see this before and do you have any ideas as to what could be the cause?

    • @totalfix877
      @totalfix877  ปีที่แล้ว

      Its tough to state exactly what the issue could be. It may be a capacitor, AV Joints being corroded, pins on the Integrated Circuits having poor contact due to corrosion as well. Without opening the system and inspecting it, it is very hard to determine. I know it wasn't a very good answer, but with AV, there are definitely different areas that may impact that behavior.

    • @stephenparker129
      @stephenparker129 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@totalfix877 Thanks for the reply! Already have given it a good clean, but I'm planning on cracking it open again to inspect the joints on the ICs as I hadn't done that before. If I'm successful, I'll let you know what I find out.

    • @Satiator123
      @Satiator123 ปีที่แล้ว

      I had a similar issue where if I touched a the game cartridge it would flicker. Sometimes this would cause it to freeze. The game looked clean but I gave the pins a good cleaning and the issue disappeared.

    ok, the font is not the problem, but I got all voltages like double, where should be 12v is 24v and where should be 3.5v is 7v, what could be the problem?

  • @lordasaki
    @lordasaki 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Dang, mine is starting to go out, and I opened it up, and there's some pin corrosion in almost exactly the same place. Also looks like there's some where the expansion RAM plugs in.
    Hopefully I can fix it, but I've never tried drag soldering before (only learned of it recently), and I have a feeling it won't work well with just rosin-core solder. I'll have to order some flux (or make some?) and practice on some junk ICs. And pray.

      I found another N64 for a decent price on eBay, but the controller input chip is all corroded. It looks like an easy fix but again...going to have to bust out the magnifying glass and maybe order some very fine gauge wire.

      Soldering is necessary when there is a loose connection or the component may be having poor contact with the traces. You can try doing a nudge test on the pins gently to see if any are loose.

      It really depends...it is hard to say without inspecting the board. Generally you may have cold solder joints, but its difficult to say without a microscope. However, the alternate easy way is to do a "nudge" test against the IC joints. Hope this helps!

    Just curious was it worth buying the bulk?

    • @totalfix877
      @totalfix877  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Juan Jackalhdz In my case, I was able to profit. You really have to asses cosmetically because that's a big part of it. To break it down however, I bought 13 units @ $15.00 each, roughly. I sell them for $100 locally w/1 controller and no games. For the most recent lot I managed to fix 11 of 13. So just to price everything
      Unit @ $15.00
      Jumper Pack Replacements @ $3.00
      Aftermarket Power and AV Cables @ $9.00
      Controller which I fixed @ $4.00
      Total: $31.00
      Profit: $69.00
      Total Profit for fixing the 11 systems: ~$730
      I don't try to buy anything that looks broken or cracked unless I know I'm going to use it for salvageable parts. There is one huge downside to all this however.....CLEANING! This part is the biggest time sink of the whole process....but since it's my hobby, it doesn't bother me too much. Hope this info helps!
