    Awesome video. I've watch so many console repair videos and have never seen anyone pull out an oscilloscope before. Pretty great tool for troubleshooting. Also great to know that about that kit that can easily remove surface mounted chips. Learned a lot from this video!

    I had this exactly this problem with a n64. No signal in the amp's output, but signal in the input. In my case, it was one of the 33uf caps that were shorted. Swaped the cap, and the sound came back. But in your case, with a bad chip, you could also bypass the amp chip if you didn't have a donor board (remove the chip and jump the inputs directly to the outputs). You'll have a lower volume sound, but will have sound.

    • @LIRetroGaming
      @LIRetroGaming  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That’s interesting, I have not come across issues with the capacitors like what you described. But it makes sense and I’m glad that you got yours sorted out as well!

      Could a short in one of those 33uf caps explain only getting audio from one side?
      Trying to diagnose one right now, and I sadly do not have an oscilloscope!

    8:46 If one has a set of appropriate sized individual heat sinks for each chip requiring good thermal heat sinking along with reusable thermal compound, they could be used as "thermal deterrent" in case one accidentally extends the power on time during diagnosis. Just my experience.
    EDIT: By the way, great job on the component level troubleshooting.

    Awesome as always, can that chip be used in either direction? Did it matter which way you put it on?

    • @juvinious
      @juvinious ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If you look at the board and the outline under U2 (after he removed the chip), there is a notch in the bottom line which indicates which direction to orient the chip. The chip itself would either have a dot or an indent in the case of this chip to show you the alignment.

    • @LIRetroGaming
      @LIRetroGaming  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Juvinious is correct, there’s an orientation to the chip

    The board from the Pikachu N64 is identical to a normal n64. I swapped boards, soldered the led module to the same points on the replacement board. Funnily the legs of the power LED are in place on the Pikachu board, they just snipped the led off.

    @stolz_ar ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Your mic volume is a tad low. Besides that, yes, I DO like this type of content! It's good to know not to test the n64 without a heatsink for too long. Maybe you could place a small CPU heatsink temporarily if you need more time.

    • @LIRetroGaming
      @LIRetroGaming  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, adding a small heatsink on those chips would buy me some more time. Fortunately I only needed a few minutes to find the problem with this one

      @@LIRetroGaming LOL! The video is short and sweet. Unmute but expect loud SM64 music the moment I “accidentally” figure it out.
      Mine was also a NUS-CPU-09-1 board in great condition that I got complete in box from Japan, so maybe it isn’t as uncommon as you think. :)
      I have a cut on Facebook or Twitter where I snatch the “No Audio” sticker off the box and throw it away.
      Explanation:
      After swapping the amp chip and replacing the audio output capacitors one at a time, I accidentally shorted 12v through pin 2 of the AMP-NUS chip and C28 (rated for 25v). Somehow this instantly revived audio output and I happened to catch the moment on video! That's where I stopped replacing caps to see if it would fail again and it still works today over a year later.
      I've also seen a Pikachu N64 with bad video. These capacitor issues only seems to happen on late board revis with Panasonic electrolytic capacitors with no lead-free/RoHS dot. Because I replaced the AMP-NUS chip, my theory was that Panasonic was already starting to reformulate for RoHS so they fail faster than the older formula/consoles. Perhaps I'm wrong and shocking pin 2 on the AMP-NUS chip did it since replacing that worked for you. That would mean I had two which did not work before zapping them. The "known good" one had not been tested since the console became a parts board a year or so earlier.

    What if you got no video and no sound what chips could possibly be the problem that could need replacement? My n64 powers on and does nothing, even after cleaning everything and its not a power supply issue

    • @LIRetroGaming
      @LIRetroGaming  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It’s very hard to know for certain. My guess is it might be related to the ram which is much more difficult to replace. I would also check to see whether there are any bad traces on the expansion memory slot

    • @LIRetroGaming

      Hard to say exactly. It could be as simple as the small daughterboard being unplugged from the main board without looking at it I wouldn’t be able to tell
